Steering Committee

What is it? This is a small group of positional leaders who are ultimately accountable for the results of the organization and who are responsible for the productivity of the Strategic Directioning Team.

Who is on it? o CEO, Board Members o Key senior leaders (including oversight of the strategic directioning process) o Leadership of key stakeholder groups

What are its responsibilities? o Sponsors the Strategic Directioning Team o Thinks holistically, systemically and strategically about the well-being, performance and

viability of the team. o Sponsors the attention of organization on this work, shapes the change efforts, shepherds the

change, models the change and monitors the progress o Establishes clear expectations for the process and its value to the organization o Organizes and prepares for meetings of the Strategic Directioning Team o Creates the conditions in the organization necessary to mobilize, execute and align the

organization around strategic priorities o Leads by asking tough questions affecting the performance of the organization

Strategic Directioning Team

What is it? It is a larger group of representatives of key stakeholder groups. This group assumes a significant role in the design, support and success of strategic initiatives that emerge from the planning process.

Who is on it? o Representatives of key stakeholder groups who might be affected by the strategic changes. People whose

support is essential to success. o Positional leaders o Opinion leaders o Good thinkers

What are its responsibilities? o Recommends the strategic direction of the organization to its governing sponsor (Board of Trustees). o Confronts critical issues; “grab moments of truth” o Thinks strategically about the organization and its performance o Plays catch ball-pushing people in and pulling people out as necessary for feedback and shared

understanding o Designs strategic approach based on data o Demonstrates teamwork to mobilize others in the organization o Attends consistently and continuously to vision, communication, motivation and encouragement o Conducts effective meetings that are focused, disciplined and productive o Forms work groups to drive the action in appropriate units o Develops the team’s credibility and connections o Trusts the capability and the work of the team
