3Tuckman’s Group Development (Storming)

Being familiar with the group, members begin questioning on given tasks, group leadership and authority. Rules, regulations and standard practices tend to be broken or ignored. Members start to pick on each other’s flaws and weaknesses; internal conflict, heated arguments and struggles arises. The group now has entered the Storming stage.

During this stage, competitions occur within the group. Aggressive members may try to dominate; while the passive members would remain quiet hiding under the radar. As members of different attitude and personality clashes, boundaries will be formed. Work and personal relationships are made or broken as more incidents happen. Leaders would need to closely monitor, facilitate and control the issues.

This stage is a huge obstacle to most of the groups and not all groups are able to work past this stage. Some groups may find themselves stuck in this black hole, unable to progress. This will lead to drop of group performances and productivity level.

Members would need to learn how to compromise with each other. Patience and tolerance levels are tested as members need to resolve their conflicts. Being out of control would be destructive to the group, as it lowers motivation and morale. Teamwork cannot be achieved even if one person is not committed to the group.
