21ST Tucson Folk Festival

The 21st Annual Folk Festival was a success in any way one wants to measure it! The attendance was good, the food fine, and the weather cooperated. And financially, we finished in the black. The music was wonderful, as always. We had over one hun-dred acts, most of them local, performing on four stages. Our headliners Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines were high energy, and Bill Miller was contemplative. We all fell in love with Harvey Reid, Joyce Andersen, and their darling son. We will never forget the amazing jam session we were treated to when Bill Miller invited Harvey and Joyce to join him on stage.

We took a couple of risks this year. We decided to consolidate the festival by closing the library stage, and returning to the art museum. This was a risk because it increased our expenses for the event, but it proved to be an excellent decision. The museum grounds made it possible for us to add a beer garden to the festival, without needing to fence in the entire event. The beer garden proved to be a popular addition to the festival, once folks found it. We made money this first year, even though sales didn’t pick up until mid-afternoon each day. (Next year, we will have better signage, and more beer.)

TKMA - 2006/2007 - Plans for the 22nd Tucson Folk Festival!

The festival schedule and the calendar year are obviously not in step with each other. Of necessity, we are already beginning to think about next year, but the new officers are not due to take over until January. This causes two different problems for TKMA. First, officers who have decided that they do not want to serve for the next festival are uncomfortable making decisions that will bind the incoming administration. Second, many of the people who would make good officers are reluctant to inherit a festival that someone else has already begun. Finally, to be truly qualified to assume major responsibility for planning the festival, one needs to have par-ticipated in planning a prior Tucson Folk Festival. Our solution to this problem is discussed in the election notice. All officers and some board members are up for election.

The 2007 Tucson Folk Festival, scheduled for May 5 and 6, can not take place without all of the people who generously volunteer their time. However, the festival, and the fund raising that supports it, has grown tremendously through the years. Many of the re-sponsibilities have grown right along with the festival, to the point that they are too large for just a few people to carry now. We have begun a process of rethinking those responsibilities, looking for ways to divide them into more manageable pieces. Now we need to recruit more people to take on these responsibilities. Here is a partial list of the responsibilities we have defined. Check the

Music in the Schools Performers Donate Guitar to Davis Elementary School Submitted by Shanti Foster, Music in the Schools Pre Festival Coordinator

Steve Amsden, who along with Robyn Landis make up the folk music duo Short & Sweet, won a guitar at TKMA’s raffle during the Folk Festival--and he promptly donated it to Davis Bilingual Elementary School, where the duo performed Friday May 5 prior to the festival.

Each year, on the Friday prior to the folk festival, ten folk musi-cians, both local and out-of-state, perform at various schools around Tucson as part of TKMA¹s Music in the Schools program. Steve and Robyn enjoyed performing at Davis so much that they wanted to give something back to the school, and the guitar was the perfect gift.

Robyn said of their experience, “We were delighted and amazed at how many questions we got, how many of the kids played guitar, and how smart and knowledgeable the questions were! We didn't think the kids would be all that interested in folk musicians, but they were great--sweet and smart. We got literally dozens and doz-ens of questions and they were all good! It's not often that musicians get to connect with young people this way. It's an incredible oppor-tunity both for the musicians and the kids!” Written on the donated guitar is a note from Steve and Robyn to the students at Davis Ele-mentary School, thanking them for being such a good audience and encouraging them to keep playing.

Music in the Schools is Looking to Grow By Kathy Burdick The TKMA’s Music in the School’s program has been bringing musicians to area schools the Friday before the Folk Fes-tival for a number of years. Now, thanks in part to a generous donation from the 17th Street Market, we are consider-ing widening the program.

The 17th Street Market is contributing to Music In The Schools based on a percentage of sales of their used book selec-tion, located as you enter the market. Please support this program by checking their selection of used books! 10% of every book you purchase goes directly to Music in the Schools.

At the last Music in the School’s committee meeting several ideas were introduced and discussed such as focusing on one school and engaging them in highly participatory music instruction using instruments, voice, or percussion. An-other thought was to have an artist in residence program where musicians would spend a week at a school helping stu-dents learn an instrument and/or write songs. Yet another idea is simply to sponsor different musicians playing in schools throughout the year and throughout the city in addition to the Friday before Folk Fest.

Obviously to be able to accomplish any of this we need additional member support. Additional monies would need to be raised and we would need the support of additional musicians.

The future of music is in our youth. Let’s do our best to get them engaged now. Please email your comments to Kathy Burdick at [email protected].

Letter from the President and Vice President: A Call for Involvement Dear Members,

People have been coming to us with lots of great ideas this past year. The Museum stage and the Nimbus beer garden are two of the ideas we implemented at the last festival. The new website and reviving the jam sessions are two of the ideas that we are in the process of implementing. However, there are more ideas than we have time to pursue. It is time to increase the involvement of the membership. Thanks to Susan Taunton, TKMA has a new website design that brings the organization’s method of communicating into the twenty-first century. We have already begun to update the musician’s email addresses, and have sent out some broadcasts; how-ever, we would like to collect addresses from more musicians, and the membership in general. We plan to use the addresses to send messages about upcoming music events which you may find of interest, and calls for volunteers to make these events possible. If you are not already on our email address list and would like to be, please send us your email address at www.tkma.org (click on the Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association tab to subscribe).

The next order of business is to get more of the membership involved in any way that interests them. You will notice as you read that most of the articles mention ways in which we need your help. In some of them, the tasks are very specific and others are more open for you to define your own tasks. We are hoping to hold more music events, just for the fun of it, and to increase fundraising, so we need ideas, and volunteers to make them happen. We are looking to get as many people involved as possible, in as many ways as possible. Please feel free to contact us at www.tkma.org

We welcome your involvement.

Sincerely, Dave Michaud Marcia Nelson

President Vice President

NEW TKMA WEBSITE

If you haven't noticed, TKMA launched a brand new website back in April, 2006--just in time for the folk festival. It's still at the same url, http://www.tkma.org , but now one side is dedicated to our annual folk festival, and the other is where you can find out what TKMA is up to all the rest of the year.

We're very excited about the new site because there are lots of goodies there to serve our local/regional musicians and folk community in general. We invite YOU to help us improve this service by using the easy Contact Us form that's right there on the site to submit info about your own folk music events, calls for folk musi-cians or other announcements. We're very grateful to Susan Taunton for having put in umpteen hours designing, developing and maintaining this site (for a song!). Susan will be building in more cool features over the coming months to better meet your needs, our beloved TKMA members. So stop by soon and check it out!

Volunteers Needed for the Tribute Concert: We still need volunteers to collect admission for the concert, and to sell desserts at the social. Please contact Elise Grecco at 326-9021 if you can help. We also need more desserts to sell. If you want to bring donated desserts, please bring them to the church by 6p.m. Please inform us if your dessert contains any common allergens, such as nuts or strawberries. We are also soliciting dessert donations from restaurants and bakeries around town. We hope you will ask businesses where you are personally well known to donate. Please ask the business to provide something with their business name to be attached to a table tent. If you manage to obtain more donations than you can collect, con-tact Linda Lou Reed at 544-0401 to arrange for help. And again, please deliver the desserts by 6pm at the latest, and include a disclosure about common allergens.

FALL PICKIN’ PARTY

HIMMEL PARK

SUNDAY, October 8 1-5 p.m. Look for us in the northeast part of the park. For those of you unfamiliar with the park, there are no ramadas here, so the event will be cancelled if it rains. Bring your instruments, your chairs, your voices, and anything you want to eat or drink. We do not have a beer permit at this time, but that may change. Check the website announcement for the latest update.

MUSICIANS VOLUNTEER TO ENTERTAIN AT THE VETERANS HOSPITAL TKMA was contacted early this summer by Gail Skinner on behalf of the Veterans Hospital. He is on the Board of Direc-tors for the VA Volunteer Services Committee. He asked for our help in finding volunteers to provide musical entertain-ment for the hospital residents. We sent out an email broadcast to the local musicians who played at the festival this year and their responses have been gratifying. What has been particularly interesting is that some of the musicians who have volunteered were totally unknown to us! We are very proud of our local musicians who stepped up to bring the joy of mu-sic to the veterans.

The VA is most interested in acoustic acts that would be able to set up in the dining hall and perform during meals. That is the venue that would allow the most residents to attend the event. There is an auditorium available, but it is difficult to get many of the residents there. The hospital staff is flexible about dates and times. We hope that the experienced musicians in the community will continue to volunteer their time periodically. This is also an opportunity for those of you who are gifted amateurs to play for an extremely appreciative audience. Also, those who teach music could give your students some real experience before a very appreciative audience. One musician who teaches at a private school plans to take her class to the VA near Christmas time, when they already play for several nursing homes.

We decided that it made more sense for volunteers to contact the Veterans Hospital directly, rather than TKMA trying to coordinate. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Mandy Perigo at [email protected] or 520-792-1450 ext 4552. Gail and I would appreciate it if you let us know if you arrange to volunteer. Gail can be reached at [email protected], (H) 520-888-4030, or (C) 520-370-6040. I can be reached at [email protected] , or 520-320-5318.

We would also appreciate it if you would pass this message along to anyone else you know who might be willing to volunteer, particularly those of you who know local mu-sic teachers. If you are uncomfortable volunteering at the Veterans Hospital for political reasons, please consider volunteering to entertain at local nursing home instead. We have had several requests from different facilities since the word started spreading about our request for the VA.

Thank you,

Marcia Nelson TKMA Vice President
