FROM THE EASTAs we are leaving the summer behind us, monsoon has moved

out and the year turns to the fall season, I am reminded that there is a good Masonic analogy with our teachings. Masons talk about infancy manhood and old age. These three phases in the life of a person are distinctly different. When we are born, the whole life lays before us. Everything is new and to be explored. At the prime of our life we can live with the full capabilities of an adult and live out all aspects of life. In old age we gain experiences, get less active and slow down, but can pass on the wisdom we might have obtained in our life to the next generation.

The general scope of a Masonic year reflects many of these changes. Our elections are aligned with the calendar year . Every year starts out with ambitions and ener gy. In the prime time of the year we are active. At the close of the year we draw from experiences we gained.

Our year at Tucson #4 year has been great. We were very busy with degrees and we had good attendance in our activities. Now that the year draws to an end, the best is still to come. We have some events planned that I want to bring to your attention.

We will have our awards night in October . We are going to celebrate those Masons who have supported us for a long time. We will honor them it in an open meeting so that family and friends are able to attend.

In November during the Public Schools Week we will have a fundraising dinner for the “Children at Risk Program”. This is a

program where school teachers are being trained to identify children at risk though abuse or neglect. I certainly think that this is a program worthy of support and where we can make a dif ference in one aspect of life outside our Masonic family. I urge us to attend and give out support.

We also support the Food Basket program for needy families. We will ask for food donations and monetary support so that some families can have a better Christmas. This will happen during the time leading up to Christmas and more detailed information will be sent out soon.

Our biggest fundraiser for the Lodge and the Masonic Family will happen in the weeks leading up to Christmas. We will be renting out parking spaces during the Winterhaven Hayrides. This is a great fundraiser which also provides a good visibility for our Masonic Family.

We are counting on everyone to be supportive of the Lodge joining in and supporting us. Every Sunday night I am sending out an email showing what is going to happen that week. This way everyone can be informed. If you would like to be on the mailing list, send me a message to my email address which is listed in the back and I will add you.

FROM THE EAST (continued) FROM THE WEST We have made our way in life, our family and

friends are the rewards of a good life. How often do we take the time to reflect on the world we have made for ourselves? Do we look at the material collections? Does your stock portfolio come to mind as standard of success?

Not knowing when the end will come, or in what manner we will face our final day. Are we prepared to say that we have done the best we can, and have lived up to our standard? I feel confident that for my Masonic Brothers we have our obligations to guide us. We have made an effort to be part of the answer rather than the problem. Life has a way of letting us stop and reflect, or rush into poor choices and harsh consequences. I can only hope that I too will choose to stop and take the time to look at all the options. Not knowing what is around the next corner, I would hope that it’ s a worthy brother that will offer a kind word or whisper good counsel.

I thank the Lord above for that moment in time that I realized that I wanted to be made a Mason. To the Brother’s and Sister’s that I have met along my travels, thank you for your kind words, love and support. Let us continue on our path of love and compassion. This will certainly establish us as the exception and not the rule. As we travel by faith and not by sight, let us strengthen our faith and improve our sight.

With Brotherly Love and Affection,

Vince Santos, P.M. Senior Warden, 2012

What Is Masonry? What is modern Freemasonry? Masonry, as mentioned before, is many things to many people. Many years ago in

England it was defined as a system of morally, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols. It is a course of moral instruction using both allegories and symbols to teach its lessons. The legends and myths of the old stone cutters and masons, many of them involved in building the great cathedrals of Europe, have been woven into an interesting and effective way to portray moral truths.

In Masonry, the old tools and ways of the craftsmen are used to help dramatically portray those moral truths. For example, the 24 inch gauge and the common gavel. Just as the ruler is used to measure distance, the modern Mason uses it as a reminder to manage one of his most precious resources: time. And, as the gavel is used to shape stones, so it is also the symbol for the necessity of all of us to work to perfect ourselves.

One modern definition is: Freemasonry is an organized society of men, symbolically applying the principle of Operative Masonry and architecture to the science and art of character building. In other words, Masonry uses ageless methods and lessons to make each of us a better person.

Thus, Masonry: 1. has a basic philosophy of life that places the individual worth of each man high on its pedestal, and incorporates the

great teachings of many ages to provide a way for individual study and thought. 2. has great respect for religion and promotes toleration and equal esteem for the religious opinions and beliefs of others. 3. provides a real working plan for making good men even better. 4. is a social organization. 5. has many important charitable projects. 6. has a rich worldwide history. 7. is a proven way to develop both public speaking and dramatic abilities. and provides an effective avenue for developing

leadership. © 2000, Grand Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons of Arizona. All rights reserved.

FROM THE SOUTHIn preparation for my advancement to the West, I

have been working on the 2nd Degree Lecture. One of the themes of this lecture is to take time to appreciate the world around us.

Over the summer, I’ve traveled to numerous places – the central coast of California and the Monterey Peninsula, the farmland of Wisconsin and Illinois, and south to the beaches of Mexico – and each of these locations has brought home to me that it’ s not just the beauty of the countryside, but also the intellectual stimulation of meeting new people, sharing ideas, and finding common ground that should be considered part of the Creator’s glorious works.

Now that we are moving into this busy time of year with school starting and holidays approaching, it is the responsibility of each of us to ensure that we make the time to admire these glorious works in all their many and varied forms, and truly enjoy the splendors that have been provided to us.

Remember to sign up for October 3 Stated Meeting Dinner and October 17 Awards Night Dinner.

Please congratulate these Brothers when you see them. If you don’t see them, yet know them, give them a call and invite them to go to Lodge with you.

Bring your Birthday Card and get your dinner compliments of the Lodge.

FOR THE LADIESNow that fall has started I hope that more ladies will

come out with your husbands, attend the State Meeting dinners and stay for the program afterwards. We have two great events coming up in October and November. Do you want to know if the jewelry you purchase at the Gem and Mineral Show is truly worth what you pay , then come to the October Stated Meeting. Our son, Ryan DeWitt, has been actively involved with buying and selling gems and minerals for 20 years and was recently featured in the magazine “Collecting Arizona: State of Mines, Legacy of Minerals” in February . Ryan will explain how to select quality semi-precious stones in jewelry. He recently started his own business, Wired Elegance, where he now selling jewelry around the world. Following dinner in November we will have a Pampered Chef Party. This will be a fundraiser for the Lodge. I thought I had every gadget I needed for the kitchen, but I am amazed at the new technical equipment that is available through Pampered Chef to make life easier in the kitchen. Deanna Iverson, PHQ of Bethel 25, will provide us with an evening of kitchen intrigue!

If you have any lap blankets that need to be taken to the VA Hospital, please bring them on the October 3rd. As days start to grow colder , we want to see that all the blankets we have finished are taken down to the hospital. I hope to see you at the Stated Dinners.

2012 LODGE OFFICERS

DEADWOOD LUNCH ~ Past Masters and Friends gather on the last Saturday of every month for fellowship at: LAVERNA’S COFFEE SHOP, STARTING TIME 11:30 AM. Deadwood has become a social gathering and tool for the Brothers of our Lodge. The knowledge you pass onto some of our less informed

Brethren is priceless. You are the link from the past to the future. The success of our lodge, and Masonry, is in your hands.

You do make a difference…
