(pg 66) DO WE SEEK TRUTH IN OUR LIVES? Do we foster a love of truth in our hearts and minds? Do we celebrate truth? Or do we avoid truth when it comes to certain issues, because we have a sense that discovering the truth may challenge us to change the way we live our lives? It is in this dynamic, the seeking or avoiding of truth, that the great self-deception be-gins. Integrity and honesty are not ac-quired simply by wishing for them, nor do all people gain them simply with the passing of time. To possess them and hold on to them, we must seek them proactively and guard them vigilantly. They are much more likely to be lost than they are to be found over time if we do not earnestly nurture them. In many moments every day, we must choose between a radical honesty with self and others, and an honesty of convenience that sooner or later descends into a web of lies and deceit. At these crossroads we are choosing between our authentic self and some second-rate version of the amazing person we are capable of being. Don’t have the book? THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don’t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today’s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel’s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural—and not coincidental—that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucha-rist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remem-brance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the “Bread of Life” discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! ESTA FIESTA EUCARÍSTICA Ciertos aspectos de la naturaleza humana nunca cam-bian, ni siquiera en el transcurso de varios siglos. Cuando celebramos una fiesta, comemos; cuando celebramos un acontecimiento importante, damos un banquete. En la primera lectura de hoy, la Sabiduría está preparando un banquete, un símbolo de la celebración de la alianza que Israel tiene con Dios. La conmemoración central de su alianza salvadora del Éxodo es la comida de la pascua judía. Por lo tanto, es natural y no casual que la celebración cris-tiana de la nueva alianza sellada por la sangre de Cristo en la cruz sea una comida, nuestra Eucaristía, la cual primero fue ofrecida por Jesús durante la conmemoración de la pascua judía. Algunas veces nos resulta fácil olvidar el rico origen religioso y humano de nuestro banquete eucarístico de pan y vino que son el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús. Hoy y en los próximos domingos que escuchemos el discurso sobre el “Pan de Vida” por boca de Juan, recordemos la generosa alianza que Dios forja con nosotros y llenémonos de alegría con este maravilloso banquete al que somos invitados. DidYouKnow? Watch for signs of anxiety in your child Everyone has had an anxious moment or two in their lives, but many people — even kids — struggle with daily anxiety. Anxiety can be a contributing factor in de-pression, and even if it’s not that severe, it can make day-to-day activities tough. Kids who suffer from anxiety may exhibit physical symptoms like asthma and stomach aches, or could have trouble eating, sleeping, or going to the bathroom. If your child is showing signs of anxiety, it’s important to ask why, and then to help your child address the cause and manage the associated feelings.
