Tug Escort Work GroupCommented on and worked with a state senator’s staff on proposed state legislation that would require tug escorts for chemical tankers, and tug escort regulations.

Navigation Work Group

Worked with the Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) to develop and implement a new dock designation system, the first in the country.

Worked with California Air Resources Control Board (CARB) staff to include an emergency exemption in a new regulation requiring ocean-going vessels to switch from diesel fuels before entering port.

Ferry Work GroupScheduled ferries account for 70 percent of vessel traffic in the Central Bay.

Working to establish protocols for routing and communication in heavy traffic areas, including the Ferry Building.

• Produced nationally distributed “Sharing the Bay” safety video.

• Produced boating brochure, “Rules 9 & 5...Laws to Live By “ and other brochures.

• Conducted outreach and distributed safe kayaking bumper stickers to paddle sport groups and rental companies to promote safe boating in shipping and ferry lanes.

PORTS Work Group• Physical Oceanographic

Real Time System (PORTS) developed by NOAA to provide real time tide, current and wind data to the maritime community.

• Work Group reassessing system to improve operation and accessibility.

• Seeking permanent state or federal funding.

These efforts and more by the Harbor Safety Committee are designed to prevent maritime accidents that can lead to oil spills and their adverse effects on the Bay, its shoreline and resources.
