This year is a very special year for Tulane University. The Class of 2017 marks the Seventy-fifth commissioning from the Tulane NROTC Unit. Members of the class of 1942 will celebrate their 75th Homecoming.

Although Tulane was not the first university to establish an NROTC unit, it has supported the unit continuously since its inception, mak-ing the Tulane NROTC the longest continuously running NROTC unit in the nation. Tulane University embraced its role in forming the Nation’s naval officers even when supporting the military seemed untenable to other universities.

Please mark the date of Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 in your calendar and plan to attend the 75th lunch-eon celebration in the Kendall Cram room. The Reunion Committee is working hard to provide a world class event. Visit the website frequently to stay up do date with the de-veloping plan.

Tulane NROTC Alumni Send Two MIDN to Naval Leadership Weekend

For the third year in a row, the extraordinary

generosity of Mr. John W. Stelly, Jr., class of

1977, and CDR (ret.) Fritz Teuscher, class

of 1989, provided two Tulane NROTC mid-

shipman with the opportunity of a lifetime.

MIDN 2/C Mallory Brinley and MIDN 2/C

James Jahn were sent to the 22nd annual

Naval Leadership Weekend at Notre Dame

University.

Speakers included Admiral John Richard-

son, Chief of Naval Operations, and General

Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine

Corps. Activities included keynote speech-

es, ethical decision games, and interactions

with current Navy leaders and other mid-

shipmen from around the country.

Midshipmen reported key takeaways: The im-

portance of competence and character as a jun-

ior officer; Always learn from your failures;

Expectations go both ways; You are a leader 24

hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a

year; Their role in the Navy and Marine Corps

of tomorrow; and the Warrior Ethos.

their experience in a presentation so that they

could share it with the rest of the battalion. You

The Alumni Association

gave the Wintle Award to

an outstanding senior Navy option Midshipman who demonstrated excellence in military

character. Association President Morris Gray was on hand to give MIDN Kade Kistner his

award. Mr. Kistner is from New Braunfels, Texas. Tulane University will confer upon

him a degree in Latin American Studies. He will then proceed to Pensacola, Florida to

pursue his career in naval aviation.

The midship-men put on the third annual Fallen 5K Race on a beautiful clear morning. The Start and Finish line was at the Navy Building. The run meandered throughout the

Tulane Campus circling Gibson Hall on St. Charles Ave-nue, down Law Road, in front of the Library, around

Newcomb Circle, out past Yulman and Turchin Stadiums, through the Rosen parking lot and on Claiborne Avenue, and finally past the Riley Center and back down McAlister.

MIDN John Tortorich was in charge of organizing the event. He did an outstanding job and was thrilled to have the opportunity see the successful outcome. Speaking of outcomes, the first place overall winner just happened to be the Tulane Alumni Association Wintle Award winner: Kade Kistner. Tulane’s Shockwave was out to cheer on the participants. One of the unit’s own midshipmen will be the Captain of the team for next year; so we applaud the campus leadership of MIDN Olivia Bancroft.

Three years ago, the Tulane University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps hosted its 1st annual Fallen 5k, held in commemoration of the officers of Tulane University’s Naval ROTC unit that paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States. This event helped raise money for the training and education of midshipmen currently enrolled at the Tulane NROTC unit as well as the Lone Survivor Foundation.

Welcome to the New Tulane NROTC Staff Members

The Tulane NROTC Alumni Association would like to welcome three new NROTC unit staff members that arrived within the past year. The NROTC unit staff are pivotal in devel-oping bright young midshipmen into exceptional Navy and Marine Corps officers who will lead future generations. The character displayed and demanded by the NROTC staff di-rectly builds the character of the midshipmen. There have been many prominent unit staff members throughout the years.

One of the earliest NROTC staff members was LT Jack W. Wintle. LT Wintle was highly respected by the WWII midshipmen as he taught midshipmen what they needed to become warriors and to survive. LCDR wintle was killed in action in one of the engagements off the Solomon Islands in 1942 and is remembered through the Wintle Award each year.

Perhaps the most famous NROTC staff member was General Robert H. Barrow, 27th Com-mandant of the Marine Corps (1979-1983). General Barrow served as the Tulane NROTC Marine Officer Instructor from 1957-1960. Marine midshipmen of that era consider them-selves, “Barrow Marines” as the future general had considerable influence upon their de-velopment. General Barrow is remembered through the Barrow Award each year.

Capt. Donald W. Meyer, Jr.

Capt. Meyer hales from Floresville, Texas. His BA in Psy-chology is from the American Military University (2008). He will be working on a masters degree from Tulane dur-ing his time as the Marine Officer Instructor. He said that he truly enjoys training and making Naval and Marine Corps Officers. His family, friends, service, and God are important to him for a good life. His last service experi-ence was as Intelligence Officer for the Marine Aircraft Group 36 in Japan. Other previous stints found Capt. Mey-er traversing the globe to the Philippines, North Carolina, Virginia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, UAE, Israel, Bangladesh, Iraq, and California. Capt. Meyer’s personal awards in-clude the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Navy/Marine Corps Achieve-ment Medal. His other notable awards include the Combat

Action Ribbon, Presedential Unit Citation, and many other campaign and service awards. As an enlisted Marine he earned the Good Conduct Medal and served as a Marine Security Guard.

LT Nicholas W. Munns

LT Munns is from Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska –Lincoln in 2009 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He is the Junior/ Submarine Warfare Advisor and he will be working on a masters de-gree while at Tulane. His last duty station was Amphibious Squadron SIX out of Norfolk, Virginia as the Antisubma-rine Officer/ Assistant Future Operations Officer. LT Munns also spent time in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the USS Jacksonville (SSN-699). He is enthusiastic about teaching and mentoring the midshipmen and taking part in all of the unit events. He understands that it is an important job to help college transform to adults and leaders and is glad to be able to give back in every way possible. LT Munns said, “I love the food! It is amazing.” He is obviously an adventurous foodie. He also wants to experience all of the unique culture of New Orleans – Jazz Fest; Saints, Peli-cans, and Baby Cakes games; Mardi Gras; etc.

Mardi Gras Drill Meet

The Tulane University campus was the location for the 2017 Mardi Gras Drill Meet. The individual events of the meet were: Platoon Inspection, Platoon Armed Basic Drill, Squad Basic Drill, Color Guard, Platoon Exhibition, and Individual Exhibi-tion. Schools from around the nation sent students to compete in this prestigious event including The Citadel, West Point, The Air Force Academy, Tulane Army, South Caroli-na, Vanderbilt, George Washington Univer-sity, Texas A&M, Baylor, Tuskegee, Au-burn, Southern, Florida State, South Caroli-na, Florida, Texas at Austin, and Florida.

The participants were thrilled to get to experience the city of New Orleans, Mardi Gras, and the hospitality of the Tulane Unit. Spectators from the vari-ous universities paid rapt attention to the exhibition of skills, as did the Tulane student body. MIDN Dane Jones who was in charge of organizing this year’s outstanding competition said that it was a difficult event to organize but it taught a lot about leadership. The overall win-ner was Texas A&M.

returned to New Orleans to

serve as the guest of honor and

commissioning officer at the

2017 commissioning. Lt. Gen.

Berger, a three star, currently

serves as the Commander, U.S.

Marine Corps Forces, Pacific.

Lt. Gen. Berger is the highest

ranking officer commissioned

at Tulane NROTC to date.

Mr. Minor saw extensive combat in the Pacific in WWII. He returned from the war to have a very successful career as a journalist, which may have been foretold in his work as editor of the 1942 Taffrail Log. View the commemorative edition of the 1942 Taffrail Log which was published when Mr. Minor was a guest speaker at the Celebrate 70 Lunch-eon in 2012. Mr. Minor’s obituary can be viewed on our website.
