A Message from the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the President and CEO

Tulsa has long enjoyed a reputation as one of America’s most giving cities. Even as the economy continued its slow pace nationally, the Tulsa Area United Way exceeded its goal by $190,310, raising $24,746,883 for our community.

At the same time, the top 100 United Ways nationwide were experiencing slight declines in their campaigns. The message was clear: in good times and bad, Tulsans always come through.

This success places our United Way in the top three percent nationally in terms of revenue generation.

In 2011, we kept our operating expenses at less than 10 percent of revenue, a goal reached by only five percent of United Ways across the nation.

You may see a common theme emerging of which we all can be proud – the Tulsa Area United Way is among the nation’s most successful United Way organizations.

It bears remembering that these are not our achievements – they are your achievements. The annual United Way campaign is a community-wide endeavor.

The Tulsa Area United Way also reached several other milestones in 2011:

We responded to unanticipated needs of our community with $233,400 in additional emergency funding, including storm relief and support for our schools.

We helped launch several new and exciting community initiatives by awarding $383,000 in collaborative funding to meet challenges such as reducing homelessness, improving neighborhoods and providing outcomes measurement training for our partner agencies.

We also are proud of the highly successful launch of our Women’s Leadership Council, surpassing expectations with more than 300 members under the leadership of Becky Frank.

We have met or exceeded most of the 2011 goals in Vision 2013, our long-range strategic plan, including the adoption of succession plans for our Board of Directors as well as our executive leadership team.

Small businesses form the foundation of Tulsa’s economy. In 2011, we worked to attract the support of small businesses by acquiring the services of a small business specialist (temporary campaign position) and launching a Small Business Council. We are grateful to the QuikTrip Corporation for supporting us in this endeavor by renewing the Small Business Challenge Grant for the second year.

Believe it or not, planning for this year’s campaign has already begun in earnest, and we are looking forward to another successful campaign for our community.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

The Tulsa Area United Way (TAUW) is the only nonprofit organization in the six-county area funding 61 partner agencies whose critical services deliver the three building blocks to a better life: Education, Financial Stability, and Health and Safety. By focusing on these essential building blocks, community volunteers, along with TAUW, help identify urgent community needs and ensure that all donations are wisely invested to meet the highest identified necessities. The funds target community initiatives and help sustain our 61 partner agencies in providing services for citizens of every age and circumstance, from prenatal to end-of-life, through all stages of their lifetimes.

OUR PROCESS

All contributions have a direct and profound impact on improving the lives of people you know – living in your neighborhood, attending your children’s school, working alongside you every day.

Those combined donations also create a significant economic “return on investment” in this six-county area. A recent research study* shows that our United Way is truly an economic engine for this community:

•Foreverydollargiven,TAUW partner agencies leverage an additional $9.10 from other resources

•TAUW’sinvestmentin partner agencies directly and indirectly supports over 3,734 jobs

•Annualeconomicimpact was $249,573,000

How Your Gift Helped - Oti Lisa BrownTulsa, OKSingle mother Oti Lisa Brown has hosted 107 foster children since 1995 and most of them have attended Crosstown Learning Center, one of Tulsa’s premier child care centers.

All six of her own children (three adopted, three soon-to-be-adopted) have experienced Crosstown’s innovative curriculum, hands-on care and three-star, nationally certified status.

“You know your children are in a safe and nurturing environment,” she said. “It’s kind of like going to grandma’s house.

“Crosstown understands the unique needs of foster families,” she added. “They provide a high level of consistency which is lacking in other parts of their lives.”

Oti and her six children, Malik, 12, Alicia, 12, Philip, 7, Tatiyana, 5, Usher, 2 and Unique, 2, live in a home built by Habitat for Humanity, where she works as Director of Family Services. The family grows vegetables at their new home.

“Some people might say I’m spoiling them,” she said. “But I cherish them and there’s nothing wrong with that.”

WE BELIEVE EVERYONE…deserves a quality education for success in life from the youngest members of our community to its

most senior citizens.

Carol Gibson never gave up hope. Although her self confidence was at an all-time low, she left an abusive marriage in St. Louis for her sister’s home in Tulsa.

Carol attended a job training program at Goodwill Industries of Tulsa where she underwent a transformation — receiving support and encouragement to reclaim her independence.

Carol completed Goodwill’s job training program and began working for the organization as a receptionist. With her renewed skills, she continued learning by attending online courses at Tulsa Community College and further classes at Goodwill.

She now works at Saint Francis Hospital as a human resources assistant. Her new life in Tulsa has blossomed: she purchased a new car and has plans to buy her own home. Even though her life is moving on, she still maintains close contact with her friends and mentors at Goodwill.

Carol acted bravely in leaving her old life behind. She says, “Women need to know there is hope out there.”

WE BELIEVE EVERYONE…should be able to earn an adequate income to sustain their lives, regardless of the economic

climate of the country.

How Your Gift Helped - Charles OwensTulsa, OKAfter a rodeo accident left him a quadriplegic, Charles Owens faced challenges adapting to a wheelchair. He also faced difficulties working through the feelings and emotions that accompanied his new life. Then a friend recommended The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges and it changed his life.

Charles is enrolled in Transition Services at The Center and has worked hard to relearn tasks such as feeding himself and using his arms. The staff at The Center helps him to establish recovery goals. The warm, welcoming encouragement he receives there helps him to achieve those goals.

Charles describes The Center as a “non-judgment zone” where staff and other clients encourage him to improve and grow. He and his family speak very highly of this inspirational place and when asked what he would tell someone considering The Center, Charles responds, “Go for it – don’t hesitate!”

2011 CAMPAIGN CHAIR

Wow! That was the reaction of guests as we revealed the results of our highly successful 2011 campaign at our end-of-year celebration, “Unite!” The campaign was truly a community-wide effort with more than 50,000 individuals and 1,500 companies, nonprofit organizations, foundations, government agencies and schools contributing their time, talent and treasure.

Together, we raised $24,746,833, surpassing our goal by more than $190,000, the second largest campaign in the history of the Tulsa Area United Way.

The campaign was a success by all measures. We fully subscribed (fulfilled) four major community challenge grants. The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, in conjunction with an anonymous donor, provided a Leadership Challenge Grant of $250,000, matching all new and increased gifts by individuals of $500 or more. QuikTrip generously issued a Small Business Challenge of $100,000, matching dollar-for-dollar all first-time gifts by small businesses with fewer than 50 employees. And T.D. Williamson contributed an additional $50,000 to the campaign as the result of a successful challenge to members of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society.

Our 17 Trailblazer companies, who ran early campaigns during the summer, also surpassed their goal by raising $2,522,909, setting the momentum for the campaign.

During the campaign, 153 companies and organizations conducted their first employee campaigns, 519 existing campaigns posted increases over last year and 2,093 individuals gave at the Leadership Level for the first time.

The Tulsa Area United Way’s partner agencies raised $839,388 toward the 2011 campaign, surpassing their goal, and TAUW employees contributed $107,104 to their own employee campaign, representing an unwavering commitment on the part of our staff. The campaign would not have been successful without the dedication and hard work of the TAUW staff and the commitment and energy of our 2011 class of 22 Loaned Executives.

And, of course, all dollars contributed to the Tulsa Area United Way are invested locally.

On behalf of myself and our Leadership Team, thank you for Living (and Giving) United!

Sincerely,

Jim BenderWPX Energy, Inc.
