Challenges of Passive Optical Multiplexing

Passive optical multiplexing is the most cost effective WDM solution, but there are some challenges involved

• No clear demarcation between client and transport equipment

• Client equipment has no integration into a transport-NMS

• Root cause analysis is difficult as there is only limited information available at the central node about the far end

• Increasing wavelength channel throughput

• Using multiplexing transponders (Time Division Multiplexing)
