Section 1 Basic System Information

An AquaTrend® Network System uses a single AquaTrend Module to interface a variety of instruments. The network is built by wiring a sensor, power supply, and any other peripheral device with LonWorks® digital Network capabilities or 4–20 mA network capability using the signal Input Module and establishing communications via the AquaTrend Interface. Power and network connections are required for all AquaTrend devices operating on the network.

After physically installing the devices, you must add each device to the AquaTrend network via the network menus in the Master AquaTrend. After adding all devices to the network, you must designate which devices communicate with one another. For example, once a sensor is attached to an AquaTrend, you must instruct the sensor to attach its reading to a designated AquaTrend display channel.

Because many underlying network connections occur when performing network operations, it is important to have all existing devices on the network powered and operating normally when network operations are conducted. Careful attention to network management operations and the interconnection of devices will ensure successful operation of the AquaTrend Network System.

1.1 How To Use This ManualThis manual is intended to be used as a quick-start guide to efficiently get your system up and running. The instructions for installing the basic components of a single or two sensor system are presented in the main body of the manual with the instructions for optional accessory devices presented in the appendices. It is written to be followed sequentially, enabling all the tasks to be performed in the most efficient order.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the manuals supplied with the individual devices that comprise your system. Important safety information, additional detail on the tasks outlined in this manual, and other more advanced features are presented in the specific device manuals. Figure 1 illustrates the major steps for installing the system. Figure 2 shows the components of a basic Single Sensor System.

Section 2 Mounting the Devices

2.1 Mounting the TurbidimeterThe turbidimeter body is designed for wall-mounting (although it may be mounted on the optional floor stand). The turbidimeter sensor must be mounted within 20 feet of the power supply. Refer to Figure 3 for specific mounting dimensions.

Determine the best mounting location using the information given below:

• Locate the turbidimeter as close to the sampling point as possible. Slotted mounting brackets are integral parts of the turbidimeter body. Hardware to mount the body is not supplied with the instrument.

• Allow at least 22 cm (approximately 10 inches) clearance for removal of the head assembly and bubble trap cover from the top of the turbidimeter body.

• Leave enough room below the turbidimeter body to remove the bottom plug and to place a container under the drain when calibrating or cleaning the turbidimeter.

Refer to Figure 4 and install the turbidimeter body as follows:

Note: Make sure the top of the turbidimeter body is level.

Install two ¼-20 bolts 10-¾ inches apart (on center). Leave at least ¼ inch of the bolt head exposed. Make sure the bolts are installed level. Hang the slotted mounting brackets of the turbidimeter body onto the bolts.

3.2 Power Supply to Power Supply Network Interconnect

Note: The steps that follow must be duplicated for each power supply. The only exception is the connection of the shield. When power supplies are connected in a series of two or more, the shield is connected at only one end for each pair of power supplies.

Each turbidimeter must have a PS1201 to provide ac power. The power supplies may be interconnected via a two conductor, shielded cable with a length less than 400 meters. Although these types of connections are usually made between two PS1201 Power Supplies, information for interconnecting between other modules is presented in the instruction manuals for those modules.

For connections between two Power Supplies, refer to Figure 20 and proceed as follows:

Figure 20 Power Supply Interconnect Wiring

1. Make sure no power is being supplied to either PS1201 Power Supply.

2. Unscrew the four screws securing each PS1201 face using a flat-bladed screwdriver.

3. Lift the faces off both of the Power Supplies and set them aside, or, store the front cover by screwing the right side of the front cover to the left side of the back enclosure.

4. If necessary, use a punch and hammer (from the outside of the enclosure) to remove one of the left three unused knock-outs on the bottom of each PS1201 enclosure. Center the punch on the knock-out for best results.

3.4 Network Termination

Note: To avoid damaging the instrument, remove power to the instrument before removing the front cover.

The network signals require a terminator for proper operation. As shipped from the factory, the terminator is disabled on all devices.

Important Note: Failure to properly terminate the network may cause total network failure. Only one device must have the network terminator enabled.

3.4.1 Network Termination at the AquaTrend/SOM or the SOM

1. Identify the AquaTrend/SOM or SOM the network termination will be performed on.

2. Remove the front face of the AquaTrend/SOM or SOM and locate J4 (a white, three-pin connector shown in Figure 21) on the circuit board in the back enclosure of the device. A jumper connected only to pin 2 should be present as shown in Figure 22.

3. To enable the terminator, lift the jumper off of pin 2 and move the jumper so that it connects pins 2 and 3 as shown in Figure 21.

4. Make sure all cable strain reliefs are tightened properly and replace the front panel.

Section 4 Plumbing the Turbidimeter

4.1 Hydraulic ConnectionsSample inlet and drain connections are made on the turbidimeter body. The sample inlet fitting installed in the body is a ¼-inch NPT x ¼-inch compression fitting. One additional fitting supplied with the instrument is a ½-inch NPT-to-hose fitting for use with ½-inch ID flexible plastic tubing on the drain.

Figure 24 Sample Flow

One-fourth inch OD rigid or semirigid tubing is recommended for sample lines. Run them as directly as possible between the turbidimeter body and the sampling point to minimize sample flow lag time.

The optimum flow rate is 250-750 mL/minute (4.0 to 11.9 gal/hour). Flow rate into the turbidimeter may be controlled with a flow restriction device on the inlet line. Flow rates below 250 mL/min. will reduce response time and cause inaccurate readings. Flow rates above 750 mL/min. will cause the turbidimeter to overflow into the drain. Inaccurate readings may be seen if the flow rate is too high.

4.2 Starting Sample FlowStart sample flow through the instrument by opening the sample supply valve. Allow the turbidimeter to run long enough for the tubing and body to become completely wetted and the reading on the display to stabilize. One to two hours may be required initially for complete stabilization.

7.1 Attached Cordset ConnectionTo attach the DDM to sensors with “Remote” jacks, use the factory-attached 2-meter cordset. Plug the silver barrel connector of the cord into the “Remote” connection of the Hach sensor and tighten the barrel. The module then receives power and is connected to the network through the sensor. See Figure 27.

The DDM may show random characters after it is plugged into a sensor. These will disappear when the module is configured by the network (see section 7.2).

Figure 27 Cordset Connection

7.2 Network SetupThe network setup consists of three steps:

1. Adding the DDM to the AquaTrend network (section 7.3).

2. Assigning the DDM to a sensor (section 7.3.1).

3. If necessary, assigning a sensor measurement to the DDM (section 7.3.1).

Page 4752004-88 adding a digital display.fm Adding a Digital Display Module

Section 8 Using the Portable AquaTrend

8.1 The Portable AquaTrend The Portable AquaTrend communicates directly to the sensor it is attached to without interrupting network commands from the Master AquaTrend. The Portable AquaTrend functions primarily as a means of accessing sensor menus for calibration and to display and log data in the immediate vicinity of the sensor.

The rotary handle on the Portable AquaTrend provides a stand for placement on a flat surface. To position the handle, pull the handle out on both sides of its base and rotate the handle to the position desired (see Figure 28). Place the Portable AquaTrend on a surface near the sensor where the display is visible and the keypad is easily accessible.

Figure 28 Portable AquaTrend Handle/Stand

The Portable AquaTrend can be easily connected to a sensor by plugging the cord jack on the Portable AquaTrend into the receptacle provided on the sensor. See Figure 29.
