AND BEYOND

NAZAR BONCUĞU

There is probably no culture in the world, which is free from the clutches of superstition and to counter these

superstitions, in every culture you will find people taking recourse to charms and talismans. The Turkish Evil Eye Pendants or the "nazar boncugu" is the Turkish means of keeping at bay

the ills brought on by envious and greedy eyes.

There are no dearth of skeptics to question the powers of lucky charms and talismans. Nor are there people who wouldn`t

scoff at the idea of the eye being evil and there being actually a pendant to protect oneself from this evil. But the Turkish Evil Eye pendant has almost become a Turkish institution, given

its widespread presence in the Turkish social echelons and the undying faith of the people in its protective powers.

TURKISH COFFE

A Turkish proverb says, `Bir fincan kahvenin 40 yil hatiri vardir (One cup

of coffee remains in memories for 40 years)`. Turkish coffee is not merely a beverage that you have in the midst of a

busy day to have your daily caffeine fix. It is a way of life for the Turkish people and quite central to their social, political and religious customs. Follow through the pages of this article to learn more about Turkish coffee

and its role in Turkish life.

TURKISH TEA

One of the most common sights you see on your visit to Turkey is the tea house where you will find people, mostly men - drinking hot steaming tea

from tulip shaped glasses. Turkey is the fifth largest tea-drinking nation in the world and has a distinct way of

making and drinking tea that makes it unique. With the change of times, the traditional tea houses are giving way to pubs that serve other interesting drinks like the `Boza`, but the charm of the old tea houses

remain. Make sure you do not miss this unique form of hospitality when you are on a visit to Turkey.

TURKISH DELIGHT

The flavors of Turkey are as unique and exotic as her sights and sounds. It is

no wonder that her eateries are always chock-a-bloc with foodies. The Turkish

Delight or Lokum is one such delicacy, which is not just popular in Turkey, but has found favor with tourists from all over the world.

It is not very often that you find a food, which is a national institution. In this respect, the

Turkish Delight commands the same respect that is accorded to the French wine or the

Swiss cheese or the Dutch chocolates.

Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam in Istanbul was designed and built by Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman architect. It was built at the

request of Hurrem Sultan (Roxelana), the wife of

Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century

(1556-1557 AD). It was built where the ancient public

baths of Zeuxippus (100-200 AD) used to stand,

between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia. The

area is also particularly significant as the site where

the Temple of Zeus once stood.

H-12 / Ist - Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Turkish Bath

“I hope that until the end of days, good hearted friends who take a look at what I have made, when they will perceive the seriousness and the spirit of my effort, can have a fair view and can invoke my name to pray for me.”

Mimar Sinan, Architect

The hamam was operational until 1910 when it closed for many years. It was later used to house the convicts during times when the nearby Sultanahmet Prison was full. Subsequently it was a storage place for paper and oil. The Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam, one of the most beautiful monuments in Istanbul, was restored for the first time between the years 1957-1958 and was a carpet bazaar until 2007.

Although the hamam was built in the classical period Ottoman bath style, it was an innovation in Turkish bath architecture to have the sections for men and women constructed on the same axis as mirror images of each other.

The history of public baths stretches as far back as the Romans. Excavations carried out in the city of Pompeii (800BC-74AD), preserved by ash following the eruption of the Vesuvius, uncovered the baths that were used by the Romans. These baths were not just for practical purposes, but also for the art of pleasure and entertainment. The class differences in the Roman Empire meant that, at the entrance gates, the washing places of the slaves and nobles were separated. The Roman bath consisted of the steam room and hot and cold water pools.

The Byzantines continued the rich heritage of the Romans, including their bath culture, and in turn influenced the Ottomans. At the height of the Ottoman empire, every neighborhood of Istanbul had a hamam with hot and cold baths, fountains and domed marble rooms. There were days each week when they were

THE HAMAM CULTURE

HURREM SULTAN (ROXELANA) / 1506 - 1558

Hurrem Sultan was born in Rohatyn within the borders of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland, which is today western Ukraine. She was kidnapped by Tatars during one of their raids in 1520 when she was just 14 years old and taken under the protection of the Crimean Khan.

She was later presented to the Ottoman palace to start her life in the harem of the Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent. Hurrem gained the attention of Suleiman and was one of the few women to be officially married to an Ottoman sultan. Her influence on Suleiman was well known and is thought to have even reached the politics within the Ottoman court. Hurrem commissioned many public buildings as part of her charitable work, including the Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam.

Together with Suleiman the Magnificent, Hurrem had one girl, Princess Mihrimah, and five boys, the princes Mehmed, Selim, Bayezid and Cihangir.

Hurrem Sultan passed away on April 18, 1558 at the age of 52, eight years before her husband Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. She did not witness the enthronement of her son Selim II who became Suleiman’s successor in 1566 AD.

open exclusively for women. The main reason why the baths took such an important place in Ottoman culture was for religious purposes. According to the Koran, cleanliness is not just an important but a fundamental part of the faith. These marble temples also provided a meeting place for locals to partake in conversation along with bathing and massage. It was customary for the wealthy to come to the bath with a silk towel, comb, henna, kohl, soap from Crete, mother of pearl inlaid sandals and in the company of servants. This elaborate preparation was due to the fact that the time spent in the hamam was not just an hour but took up most of the day. For the past one thousand years, the hamam tradition has been important for cleanliness and health but also for entertainment and social gatherings. These traditions have been reinterpreted for the modern culture in the Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam.

Visit the remote village of Ayvali to feel like a true insider, as you’re welcomed into a villager’s home to prepare typical Anatolian meal, learn about Turkish culinary tradition while feasting on regional specialities amongst which delicate “borek” pastries (made with cheese that’s been ripened in an earthenware jug), traditional bulgur soup, yaprak sarmasi (seasoned rice wrapped in grape leaves), manti (Turkish ravioli), dolaz (a delicious fried dessert served with local honey) can be quoted, meet local men relaxing in a ‘kiraathane/traditional coffee-house” to find out the male villagers’ life style and sample wine from the Cappadocia region. After a strong Turkish coffee bid goodbye to the friendly hosts and then stroll through Ayvali’s tiny streets at which the locals may invite you for tea or homemade desserts from their kitchens. Our visit to the village may also feature a walk to the local market on the days it will be open to check out the most interesting stalls and chat to the vendors, or, if not open, walk to the village to pick your own organic fruit, or visit one of the cool storage caves.

You can see the gleaming white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, located next to the ruins of Hierapolis. The extraordinary effect is created when water from the hot springs loses carbon dioxide as it flows down the slopes, leaving deposits of limestone. The layers of white calcium carbonate, built up in steps on the plateau, gave the site the name Pamukkale (cotton castle). After the open buffed lunch Swimming in hot red thermal pools in the hotel. After breakfast we will drive to Bergama City. It is a 1.30 hour drive from Izmir to Pergamum. It takes 3 hours’ drive from Kusadasi.

Pergamum had a significant place of its own in all Asia. Historically the city was the capital of the greatest Kingdom that existed in this region. The city is situated at 100 km north of Izmir. The Roman historian Pliny Called it: “By far the most famous city in all Asia”. The cause for this importance was this: When John wrote his Letter, Pergamum had been a capital city for almost four hundred years. After the mythical times, Pergamum Had been the scene of several cultures, ranging from those of the Stone and Bronze Ages until the Archaic and Classical Periods. Among the temples, palaces and agora’s, the Asclepion, which were constructed in the course of one century, belonged the big Zeus Altar and the Parchment Library. They stand as the most brilliant Works of Art of the fourth and third century B.C. in Anatolia. The Parchment Library housed the most famous collection of Books of that time, written on a type of processed lamb and goat skins. This was a process invented in Pergamum, when the rulers of Ptolemean Egypt embargoed the export of Egyptian papyrus sheets to Pergamum. Other magnificent buildings of this period are the Temple of Athena and those of Demeter and Dyonisos. After The Lunch We will continue to Asclepion. Asclepion was known under the name of “The

They were: the Artemisia of Ephesus, the Apollo cult of Delphi and that of Asclepius Pergamum. Asclepius the deity health and medicine served the people For several hundred years; thus making Pergamum a medical centre of very great importance. This tour covers 3 magnificent cities of ancient times, close to each other. After breakfast departure and visit ;PRIENE: Despite of its small size, Priene was a very important city in ancient times because on its territory stood the Panionium, the central meeting-place and sanctuary of the Ionian Confederacy. The theatre, the temple of Athena, the agora, the Bouleterion and the temenos of Zeus Olympus will be the steps of this visit. MILETUS: Miletus was the principal port and the richest imperium at the Aegean coast. Thales of Miletus believed that there was a fundamental unity beneath the apparent disorder and complexity of nature and he postulated that water was the basic material for all things. The theatre of Miletus is by far the most impressive of the town’s surviving monuments. There is also the council-chamber, marketplace, temples, baths and Islamic monument: Ilyas Bey Mosque to be visited. After the lunch we will visit the Didyma Apollon temple. Eudoxos, a very popular astronomer and maths professor; Dr. Euryphon; Polygontos, a popular paint-er; Skopas and Bryaksis of Faros, the most famous sculptors of the era; Sostrates, the architect of Alexandrian light house -one of the seven wonders of the World- and Ktesias the doc-tor, who saved the life of a Presian king from a disaster, lived on this island. Dr. Euryphon and his students founded the sec-ond biggest medical science school in Cnidus. The island also hosts the largest sun clock of its time which was erected by Eudoksos. Knidos was the home for Aphrodite’s monument and in those times the city was famous for brothels and be-came popular for sailors and Arabic tradesmen. You may take a walk on the shore to see the ruins.

Day 7: BLACK ISLAND – (POYRAZ BAY – METEOR BAY) - BODRUM

We will start to cruise early in the morning to Karaada (Black Island). Breakfast and a swimming break will be at Poyraz Bay which is located on the northern side of the island. There is a meteor hole here and this is how the bay got its name. Here you may jump over the platform into the deep water. You may also take a walk through the underwater caves which are very near to Mete-or Bay for a small local fee. We will dock in Bodrum Harbor for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 1: BODRUM

Boarding starts at 15:30 from Bodrum Harbor. On the first day, our boat will remain anchored in Bodrum Port for dinner and stay at the port an overnight. Bodrum has a history that goes back to the 12th century B.C. The city was called ‘Hali-carnassus’ and it was the birthplace of Herodotus; the ‘Father of History’ who lived in the 5th century B.C. The ‘Mausoleum’ of King Mausolus (350 B.C.) one of the Seven Wonders of the World is in this city. The only structure that survived from the Classical Era is the Amphitheatre. It is one of the oldest theatres in Anatolia with a capacity of 13.000 guests and it is still hosting many shows and concerts for the art-lovers of Bodrum. Another place that you should visit when you arrive in Bodrum is the landmark of the city, the ‘Castle of Saint Peter’. It is one of the best preserved pieces of architecture with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. ‘Myndos Gate’ through which Alexander the Great entered Halicarnassus is another place that you should not miss to visit.

Day 2: ORAK ISLAND – COKERTME

After your breakfast, you will be informed about the cruise itinerary and the boat. Then we will cruise to Orak Island. Here you will have the opportunity of swimming in the crys-tal-blue waters of Orak Island and enjoying lunch, we will then sail to Cokertme, a small and picturesque fishing town, for dinner and an overnight stay. If the weather conditions permit, it may be possible to use the sail on the way. Guests are welcome to take a short walk on the shore.

Our guests can also en-joy a walk in the forests which are filled with pine trees. Our first stop in Seven Islands Region will be Kufre Bay. Then we will be anchoring at Uzun Liman (Long Port). Afterwards we will cruise to English Port for dinner and an overnight stay. The name English Port comes from the time of 2nd World War as the ships of British Navy forces used to dock here. In this area, there are so many small and large bays which are suitable and sheltered enough to anchor for the boats.

Day 4: CLEOPATRA ISLAND – KARACASOGUT

We will cruise to Sedir (Cedrae) Island. This unique is-land with its small beach and unbelievable clear water is like an open-air museum. You can see the city walls, the temple from the time of Dorians’ reign (later restored as a

church), the amphitheater with 1.500 guest capacity and some vaulted historical buildings. You can walk around the wrecks of pillars with antique writings on them or the an-cient stones decorated with reliefs. Cleopatra Beach, locat-ed on this island, has a very special kind of sand that can only be found in the deserts of Northern Africa. According to the myth, King Antonius brought the sand from Egypt via sea for Cleopatra. Then our boat will sail to Karacasogut village for dinner and spend the night there. This lovely vil-lage is located at 25 km away from Marmaris. Therefore, it is possible to visit Marmaris via ‘dolmus’(mini buses) if you want. We also have an optional tour to Dalyan - Caunos.
