The clock tower was designed by the Levantine French ar chi tect Raymond Char les Père and bui l t in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniver sar y of Abdülhamid II 's accession to the throne (r eigned 1876?1909). The clock i tself was a gi f t from German Emperor Wilhelm II (r eigned 1888?1918). I t is decorated in an elaborate Ottoman ar chi tecture style. The tower, which has an i ron and lead skeleton, is 25 m (82 ft) high and features four fountains (?ad?r van), which are placed around the base in a cir cular pattern. The columns are inspir ed by Moor ish themes.
