For the last ew years, the Europeans have run theirannual European eam Championships or WFB andW40k. Tis tournament should really be renamed as theWorld eam Championships as it has grown to includecountries rom all over the world.

In the 2011 edition, 28 countries took part;Whilst the majority were rom Europe, the United States,Australia and New Zealand has representation as well.

Tis tournament diers rom classic tournaments in thatit is a team event o 8 players and plays with modiedWFB rules. Te design o the system allows teams to playarmies that are competitive against each other (ie no badmatch ups) and the modied rules try to make the gamemore skill based and less reliant on army list construc-tion.

Tere are no prizes short o a little trophy and itsorganised very much as an altruistic aair. So the phi-losophy o the tournament would be to attend, enjoy andmake riends. Tis event gets bigger every year, I under-stand Flames o War is being considered as a 3rd event.EC also has the support o Rankings HQ, the Web por-tal or gaming. At the event, there are press interviewsand a lot o coverage on star players like Asger, Gazor andthe like. Is this the World Cup o WFB? I think it is.

Lam Choon Voon is a veterano the Warhammer FantasyBattles gaming scene. oday,

he preents us a short write-hp on the European eamChampionships (EC), andthe communitys plans or theevent...

Te 2012 event will be held in Poland in a littletown called Gorzow. Its on the German Polish borderand its smaller than JB. I am pleased to announce thatthere will be a eam Singapore. Its an exciting event orus because, being the competitive country we are, wewould love to test our skills against the best in the world. As things stand, we can claim to be the No 1 country inAsia or WFB ! (unless the Malaysians or Chinese turnup).

Te WFB EC team is a pretty tight knit groupthats stocked ull o Sporecon and other tournamentwinners so we hope we wont embarrass ourselves. Ourgoal would be to place as No 1 in Asia Pacic ie beat Aus-tralia and New Zealand. Tis is not the rst time WFBhas ventured abroad, 2 years ago, we has a riendly withour Malaysian brothers and we did ok. Importantly, itwas a great experience or the guys. We bonded overgames, beer, good ood and long distance drives.

Finally, Id like to thank the community in ad-vance who have pledged their support or this endeavour.I would like to think that the more acclaim eam Singa-pore gets at Gorzow, the more vibrancy and buzz we canadd to the gaming community. Wish us the best !

On December 16th, a group o Singaporean gamersheaded up to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to participatein Legio Malaysias December Warhammer 40k ourna-ment. Tis year, the event was held at MaGaCon 2011.Te groups adventure begins with multiple bus break-downs, and eatures side trips such as shopping and eat-ing... but were not here or that, are we? We want to seedice rolled, and imaginary explosions!

At the end o the event, the Singapore teamsnagged the Best Painted prize, and placed within thetop three places or the event. Me? Eh heh, I lost 2 o mymatches and drew 1 Im glad I didnt end up last on thetable! Sorry, team...

Formed in 2008 by Je Brooks anda ew like-minded hobbyists, LegioMalaysia has been organising regularhobby nights and a variety o events

or its members ever since. In 2011,they were invited to organise their an-nual December tournament at MaGa-Con.

Te tournament was simple enough 1750pts, 3 rounds, each round lasts or 2.5 hrs. Tree prizes were given out:Best Overall, Best Painted and Best Sportsman all giv-en out in the orm o plaques (in the case o Best Overall,a purity seal, a Legio Malaysia trademark).

Like all o the events by Legio Malaysia, this tournamentoperated on a non-prot basis. Tere was no registrationee - the amount we paid was or the ticket into the con-

vention itsel. I there is a charge (or our events), it isonly to pay or -Shirt door gis, and the plaques thatare used as prizes, said Je. We dont give product orcash prizes, as we didnt want to encourage a win-at-all-costs attitude.

We sat down to a little conversation with the tourna-

ments organisers, Je Brooks and Khairul. Its a littlesmaller than what we used to run, Je admitted. Tisyear, the tournament was planned or 16 players whileprevious tournaments saw 24 players or more.

Je and Khairul have had a great amount o experiencein tournament events, and it shows! Te day went bysmoothly without so much as a hitch or delay. What was

their secret? Were very strict on timing, Je said. rue,the organisers would regularly announce the amount otime the players had le during each round: one hourmore, hal an hour more, 15 minutes more etc. Whentime was up, time was up. Te organisers would take thematch result there and then, regardless o how close thegame was or how many turns had actually passed. As aresult, the tournament started and ended on time.

Te organisers sought to make things interesting, via simple modications to the scenarios that were oundin the main rulebook, as well as including scenarios romBatle Missions. Special rules, such as orbital bombard-ments, objectives that hurt the units within range... allthese served to keep the tournament interesting.

MaGaCon 2011, short or Malaysian Gamers Conven-tion, was held at the KDU

University in Petaling Jaya.Tis is the rst annual in-dependent Analog and Digi-tal gaming convention and

promised the public an expe-rience o the gaming cultureand liestyle o Malaysia.

Hobbyorge was set up in 2010 by 23 year old businesspsychology student, Alvin Khaw. A hobbyist since2007, Alvin wanted to provide an alternative store andgaming location or wargamers. He mainly stocks GamesWorkshop products rom the Fantasy and 40k ranges, and opens only on Friday evenings and on the weekends.

Hobbyorge isnt a typical shop space it is in acta student apartment. Upon entering the store, visitors aregreeted by gaming tables and a small counter or blistersand magnets. It opens up to the main store, as well asmore tables in the next room. Litter the shop with displaycabinets lled with ully painted armies, and you haveHobbyorge.

Alvin ran into diculties initially. His stocks usedto arrive at inconvenient times, such as during lectures,

I had to leave classes halway in order to receive stock,he told us.

In addition, existing businesses had tried to cre-

ate trouble; one even spreading disinormation on Alvinsbusiness motives. Still, Alvin persisted. It is my ownbusiness, and eventually people saw the truth or them-selves, and it only made that retailer look oolish.

Now, Hobbyorge sees a regular group o gamers, mostly made up o young proessionals over 24 years oage. New players are brought in by this regular group, and Alvin hopes to inspire these gamers to nish theirarmies by setting an example himsel. o date, Alvin hasseveral collections, including Alpha Legion, Blood An-gels and Chaos Daemons. He hopes to organise eventswith ully painted armies soon.

    ARMY LIS ---->

Veterans made up the most o the army, and eachsquad was outtted to take on specic targets. I ama big an o redundancy; I believed that i a unit can do

a job, two units can do it better... Not to mention that

should one unit ail, the other can make up or the slack.Tese would be vital or capturing objectives.

Chimeras oers protection or the troops in more

ways than one the enemy has to crack open the canrst beore getting at the juicy inantry within, and some-times, Chimeras do a great job or blocking line o sightto more vital assets such as the Manticores. Tey providea good bit o anti-inantry repower as well; their mul-tilaser turrets can wound Marines suciently well, andtheir Hull Heavy Flamers will burn any horde units thatget too close.

Manticores and the Leman Russ Demolisherwere there to provide much-needed antitank. Strength10 weapons are the highest anyone can get against vehi-cles, and Manticores provide those abundantly with itsd3 shots per turn. Barrage just makes it harder or thetarget to hide. Te Demolisher is vital to deal with anyinevitable erminator (or similar saves) squads.

Te Vendetta and Company Command Squad(the one chock ull o meltaguns) was a gambit. Teskimmer turbo-boosts towards a high value target i.e.enemy artillery during its Scout move, resist incoming

re or a turn beore unloading its cargo. Why the Com-mand Squad, instead o Veterans? Tree reasons: 1) morespecial weapons 2) Ocer can issue commands i.e. Bringit Down, increasing eectiveness o squad and 3) or asuicide unit, ablative wounds are not a priority.

Building the list is only hal the battle, the otherhal is playing it... as well as praying to the dice gods.

Refections- oo much aith in my gambit. On hindsight, Ishould have kept it in reserve to protect the Vendetta.- Against a leaflower (AND you know youregoing second), place your own units into reserve. Tisserves the dual purpose o protecting your troops romthe rst turn salvo, as well as providing you the rst strikeadvantage when your units arrive resh and unharmed.

Otherwise, i you ully deploy your army, youre simplysetting up targets or the Imperial Guard, and praying orthe dice to be merciul.- Te list I elded was unable to dish out long-ranged repower. I had placed too much aith into theManticores, without realising that the most o my eec-tive repower came at 24 and below.

Game 1 V.S. Chris KohChris Kohs list includes: Company Command Squad, 30 strong Inan-try Platoon, Veterans, Vendetta, 3x Leman Russ anks, a Basilisk and

3x Chimera transports. Te game was Killpoints.

Imperial Guard mirror match. Oh joy. When we sat downto start the games, my opponent and I agreed that who-ever had the rst turn, would have the advantage. Both ous had deployed our entire army, and the battleeld wasairly open save or a ew LoS blocking pieces o terrain.

I went second. In the opening salvo, I lost my Manticores,my Vendetta (and the Command Squad it was carrying)and the Demolisher. I was only able to kill the Veteransand the Vendetta they were riding on. Unable to deliver a

counterstrike, I conceded early into the middle o the game.

Game 2 V.S. Redeye.(Blood Angels)Redeys list includes: Librarian, Librarian Dreadnought, SanguinaryPriest, Assault erminators, Stormraven Gunship, 2x Assault Marinesin Razorbacks, 2x Baal Predators with Assault Cannons, 2x PredatorAnnihilators. Te game was ake and Control.

Tis was a silly match on my part. Denitely betterthan my rst, but I could have perormed better. Te sce-nario was simple enough: there is a control point in themiddle o the table. Te deender begins play with oneroops unit on it. Whoever controls the point at the endo the mission wins the game.

Seeing that my opponent only had two scoring units, myjob was simple enough wipe the scoring units and he

can only hope or a draw. However, the way that the sce-nario works is that the deender places his entire army inreserve (its not even a choice, it was mandatory), whilethe attackers units will all enter the table rom turn 1. In-itially, I thought that my Ocer o the Fleet would shine i I could orce his units to arrive piecemeal, it would bemuch easier or my orces to take each out, one by one.

Te other side to that argument is that since my entirearmy was on the table, the deender could easily allocate

his assets to counter my units movement, orcing meto react. My deployment saw most o my repower onthe right ank, and my opponent was able to counter byattacking the le. While I was able to wipe out his twoscoring units, my own scoring units was unable to bargepast the erminators to grab the objective, and the mainobjective was drawn. My opponent won by the secondaryobjective, which was Killpoints.

    turnonepublications.wordpress.com

    10

    events

Refection- roops are important. Sometimes, the secondaryobjective may not be there to help you win the game.- I should have deployed my orces symmetrically,

make my opponent choose which ank to attack. I I haddivided my assets equally between the two anks, I mayhave been better able to react to the counter-assault.- During this game, my opponent played the rstew turns with relatively ew units on the table. I wasteda lot o unnecessary movement instead o simply gun-ning or the middle (my excuse would be that the controlpoint was on a Skyshield Landing Pad, highly inconven-

    ient or vehicles).

Game 3 V.S. Chris Ong (Imperial Guard)Chris had: Company Command, 2x Veterans, 3x Vendettas, Ex-ecutioner with Knight-Commander Pask, 2x Medusas, Psyker BattleSquad, echpriest

At this point, I realised that the goal now wasnt to win. Idecided there and then that I should concentrate on hav-ing un, and it was a good thing that my opponent waswilling as well (he had just wanted to roll dice). We didnteven read the scenarios special rule. O course, both o usplayed with some tactical sense, like not exposing the rearo our tanks to the enemy anti-tank weapons, and we didmind the objectives. However, many command decisionswere made or the pure spectacle (such as unloading ALLmy Manticore rockets on a single Veteran sitting on an

objective and him surviving still), or petty revenge(my Demolisher hunting Pasks Executioner, because itscratched the paintjob o the Command Chimera).

As such, dont expect much o a tactical analysis rom thismatch but, I will say this: I had the most un duringthe tournament rom this match. Your games can greatlydepend on your opponent i he shows the Face whenlosing or becomes an arrogant snob when winning, it canbe a major downer. We have to recognise that people play

games or dierent purposes, and we should respect that .

I you can get your opponent to cheer you on, even as youblow his units up... youve got it!

    psychology o 40k- Joshua Leong

First, prepare the grand strategy. Next, add in a smat-tering o ambition. Simmer until the ego rises. Sprin-kle some trash talk and add lots o luck. Ready to serve!

In this tabletop strategy game played by the mass-es, ranging rom young scholars-to-be to retired million-aires, dreams and hopes are oen dashed by the reality othe dice roll, and sometimes by the opponents words andcomments.

New gamers usually tend to quake and wonderhow they could possibly ace o against such a superiororce, without realizing that they are the victims o a psy-chological warare. Veterans listening to the same con-

Another o-used strategy includes openly rollingdice at random in ront o the opponents beore the starto the game, then loudly declaring the number o 6sthat have been rolled, to ool the opponent into believingthat they have control over luck itsel. By using a strategy

1.Interrupt the opponent when he is on a roll.Whenever the opponent builds up a sequence o

ast and easy necron metallics- Lim Wei Yang

Hi everyone! Tis is Spindoc here sharing my tips on how to get your minis painted in an ecient and ast manner.

With the current avour o the month being Necrons, I would like to share some pointers on how to get that metallicsin a ast way. Tis issue, I would be covering two basic metal colours, Steel and Gold, as these colours (especially steel)are oen used in a variety o armies. I would be using a necron converted Cryptek as a base model... so lets get started!

Step 1)Basecoat your model (I chose GW Chaos Black undercoat).

Lim Wei Yang, also known asSpindoc to the community, isa legend at speed-painting.

His techniques allow him tochurn out armies at an alarm-ing rate. o date, his collectionincludes Chaos Space Ma-rines, Eldar, Necrons amongstothers.

Step 2)For Steel, just paint on GW Chainmail(in this case I have drybrushed heavily)

Step 3)Meanwhile while waiting or theChainmail to dry, I started work onthe gold (saves time!). Gold is a rus-trating colour to paint, mostly be-cause gold paints are slightly opaqueand require many coats. A quick way

around this is to use GW Foundationpaints. In this case, I have appliedtwo coats o GW Iyanden Darksun.

Step 4)While waiting or the yellow base-coat to dry, i applied the GW BadabBlack wash. You can instantly see thegood results here. Te two pointystu on the shoulder pads were leuntouched as to compare the eects!

For gold, you can varythe yellow basecoat andthe gold paint. You also

vary the wash - OgrynFlesh or a bright hueand Devlan Mud or adarker hue.

Step 5)While waiting or the Badab Blackwash to dry... I start work on the goldagain. Tis time i have used GW Shin-ing Gold (thinned with water) on theyellow basecoat. Do not worry i theedges are not coated due to the thinned

paint, we will come back to it later!

Step 6)For the gold, we will use GW OgrynFlesh wash. Apply liberally, but in acontrolled manner.

Step 7)Aer the Ogryn Flesh has dried, youshould get this nice matt tone to thegold. Highlight the edges (rememberthe edges that werent covered well?)with GW Shining Gold and you aredone! For the steel, highlight with

Chainmail and you are set too!

Heres a tip or troubleshooting - iyou messed up the steel [e.g. toomuch Badab Black pools in 1 spot],simply use GW Boltgun Metal. Itsthe closest equivalent to the washedChainmail!

Te nished product! You can exper-iment with the shades/hues by vary-ing the colours.
