Sandvik Corona high speed steel tool bits complement cemented carbide in operations where cuttingspeeds or edge profiles are not suitable for hard tool materials. HSS tool bits are a suitable alternativebecause they are:
– extremely tough tool material; work well at low cutting speeds and in intermittent cuts.
– regrindable; a large number of cutting edges can be produced on same tool.
– easy to grind into sharp, positive edges; useful for small component manufactures
– possible to ground cutting edge profiles as required and easily adaptable to a very wide range of customer needs.
GradesGrade C45 should always be first choice with C60 as analternative when high wear resistance is required.

Sandvik Corona HIGH SPEED STEEL TOOLS
Sandvik Corona gradesThe Sandvik Corona grades C45 and C60 give theessential properties of wear resistance, toughnessand ease of grinding. Grade properties are obtai-ned by combining the steel compositions andstructure with the most advanced manufacturingmethods.
Grade C45. Should always be first choice. A high alloyed High Speed Steel capable of withs-tanding high temperatures at the cutting edge.
Grade C60. Alternative to be used when high wearresistance or good grinding properties are decisivecriteria. A high alloy powder metallurgical gradewith a more even distribution of carbide particles.
C45 C60

Cutting geometryMachine type and workpiece material determinethe cutting tool geometry with a general rule thatthe cutting edge should be provided with positiveangles. The recommendations are nominal valueswhich may have to be changed according tomachining conditions. When using heavy feed theclearance angle (αn) and rake angle (γn) should bereduced to achieve a stronger cutting edge (βn).
ChipbreakingWhen machining long chipping materials a chip-breaker (hB) can be ground for better chipbrea-king. However, too large an hB-value may causechip-jamming.
GrindingThe characteristics of the tool bit depends to alarge extent on how the grinding and sharpeningof the cutting edge is carried out. To obtain thebest result, the grinding data should be selected inconsultation with the grinding wheel supplier. Thedata given are general recommendations.
