TurnItIn checks your paper for originality
The majority of papers submitted through D2L are run through turnitin
An originality report is created
Originality
Billions of internet documents (online papers, journals, websites, etc)
Archived internet data that is no longer available on the live web
A bank of previously submitted papers (at OU and other institutions)
What sources are compared to my work?
The originality report gives a summary of matching similar areas of text found in your paper as compared to its search of multiple documents and sources.
This report will appear as a percentageThe higher the percentage, the higher amount
of matching text that was found (i.e. the words in your paper closely match the words in another document)
Percentages show in rages with matching colors
What is the Originality Report?
This report gives professors a tool to locate text similar to your work. It does not necessarily mean you plagiarized in your paper.
It is left to the professor to determine if proper citation was used or if plagiarism occurred.
Papers with a higher number of citations are expected to have a higher percentage. Ex. evidence based practice paper
Papers without as many citations are expected to have very low percentages. Ex. Family of origin paper
What does it mean?
What does the instructor see?The instructor will see each submission with
its corresponding rating on their D2L account.
The instructor can click on each individual percentage to view a complete breakdown of each incidence of matching
This breakdown will include where each similar text was found within the paper and what percentage of entire paper was matched
The instructor can then click on each similarity to find it in the paper to see how it was used and cited.
Obviously, if a phrase is identical to another source, as long as it is properly identified, it won’t be plagiarism
Then what?
Some instructors can select an option for students to be able to use turnitin BEFORE they submit a paper on D2L.
