Western High Carrie Moore, School Counselor

Seniors from the Career Management Class along with underclassmen in the College Ready Core of Western Alamance High School attended UNC Greensboro and Guilford College for tours and information sessions on December 5th, 2013. Despite the gloomy weather, the students had a great time and heard about the college experience from their student tour guides. The students asked great questions about admissions requirements, financial aid and how to choose the right college.

We even ran into a few former Western Alamance students on campus at UNCG!

We are thankful to Robyn Hadley and the "What's After High School?" program for helping to make this trip possible!

North Graham Elementary Joy Rust, Music Instructor Kindergarten students from North Graham delighted residents at the Alamance House by sharing 12 songs from our music curriculum, including Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and patriotic songs. The residents were so welcoming, the students so kind and loving. Residents joined with the students to sing some of the favorites of the season! We were especially excited to serenade the mother of kindergarten teacher Jane Fogleman. This event made the season special for us; we look forward to continuing this relationship with our friends at Alamance House!

North Graham Elementary Joy Rust, Music Director The NGE Dynamites performed at Elon Academy's Christmas celebration on Saturday, December 14. The event was held on Elon Community Church, and included a delicious catered luncheon for 200 people prior to our performance. We thoroughly enjoyed entertaining the scholars and staff of Elon Academy as well as their families!

NGE students and staff ended 2013 with a schoolwide celebration on their last day of school, Tuesday, December 17. Kindergarten students sang their December program for the school, followed by students in Mrs. Moyers' first grade delighting everyone with their entertaining rendition of "The Gingerbread Man." Third graders looked sharp in their Santa hats as they crooned to "Here Comes Santa Claus" in Elvis style. The staff entertained the students with a rousing rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas!" The Dynamites shared an African drumming song, and then ended with "North Pole Rock and Roll" with the entire school joining in. To finish the schoolwide festivities each of the 4 Houses of NGE met for 30 minutes of team building. It was a great way to close out 2013! Happy New Year, everyone!

‘Twas the Week Before Christmas Danielle Woodall, Lead School Social Worker

‘Twas the Week before Christmas “School Social Work Style”

‘Twas the week before Christmas

And all through the halls School Social Workers were busy

With CFTs and phone calls

Christmas Cheer was sending lists Of families to adopt

Toys for Tots referrals were made As well as Shop with a Cop

When all of a sudden

The emails were a flutter The sheer number of new messages

Made us all shutter

There was one about McKinney-Vento And attendance too

Training on bullying, observations, And committee meetings, whoo hoo!

But because we are School Social Workers

And we love what we do Every task was eventually completed Without a bah humbug or boo hoo

Now January will come too soon And back to work we all will go

So enjoy this time with your loved ones Merry Christmas and Ho Ho Ho!!

Thanks, Mrs. Shirley, for a job well done!

Mrs. Jane Love has served South Mebane for the past 34 years as the secretary and financial officer. These titles do not begin to describe all of the things Mrs. Love does each day to serve the staff, students, and parents of South Mebane. It is her smiling face and joyful spirit that defines the love in South Mebane’s motto Love, Laughter, and Learning. As Mrs. Love retires, she is welcoming her first grandbaby, Turner Jeremiah, and plans to spend lots of time snuggling with him. Her family at South Mebane wishes her much love and happiness as she begins this new journey in her life.

AO Elementary Laura Bivins, Fourth Grade Teacher

This year my class (Mrs. Laura Bivins' 4th grade) and Mr. Godwin's 4th grade class worked to create angel necklaces, bracelets, and chocolate covered pretzels. We sold them for a $1.00 donation on 12/11, 12/12, and 12/13. Each day the students set up a selling station at three locations. A few of our fifth graders who participated last year were able to come and mentor the students at each station! Each day we sold out of our products. We made a total of $552 and took the money to buy toys for Christmas Cheer of Alamance County. A representative of the organization came by to collect the toys and talk with the students about the need in our county.

In preparation for this project, the students learned about economics in North Carolina. We taught them how to advertise, market, and package their products. It was a great learning experience for all! In the past four years we have raised over $2,500 for this organization!

Students in Ms. Turner’s class held a gift exchange on pajama day. Each child brought a gift for someone of the same gender...girls brought girl gifts, boys brought boys. Ms. Turner read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and every time she read "the" (a word wall word) the children passed the gifts to the left. At the end of the book they were able to open the present they had in their hands. The classroom elf on the shelf had also sprinkled glitter everywhere to help it be more magical for the children! Parents brought in snacks for the children to eat before the gift exchange.

These students help beautify the campus, create inspirational images that are displayed throughout the building and even held a canned food drive.

Smith Elementary Lindy Isley, Teacher/Librarian

For the last few weeks the Kindergarten classes at Smith Elementary spent some time learning about Christmas celebrations all around the world.

Each teacher was responsible for telling the classes about a country of their choice.

Technology teacher, Allison Faircloth, followed up these activities by having the Kindergarten children create powerpoints, with the help of the second graders, about a country they researched. I treated the K’s to a visit from Sinterklaas (Holland’s version of Santa Claus).

The children were left clues written in poetry all over the library. The final clue resulted in a chocolate treat. Why poems? That’s what Sinterklaas leaves when he visits the children. Needless to say, they were very excited that he had been there!

Eastlawn Elementary Tameka Cloud, Assistant Principal Before our students left for Winter Break, Eastlawn Elementary School’s administrators, support staff members, specialists and classroom teachers performed various reader’s theaters such as: Santa and the Three Bears, Cowpoke Christmas, and ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

We engaged the students by asking them to make predictions prior to the plays and use textual evidence to support their answers after the plays were complete.

This has become a tradition that our students and staff look forward to each year!

Students at Pleasant Grove sold gift cards to Texas Roadhouse. The top selling student received a variety of prizes, including the ability to eat for free at the restaurant for the next year. Since a certain amount was raised, the staff will receive a catered meal, and the top-selling class got to go to Texas Roadhouse for lunch! This was a great opportunity for the first-grade class. Thanks bunches, Texas Roadhouse!

Happy Holidays from Chef Thorpe’s new tv pilot premiere for the Cooking Channel Dr. Thorpe was dressed to impress, just waiting for his gloves to begin serving food at central office in his complimentary apron and hairnet from the CN Department. Marie Chavis from HR was the only one allowed to hold a sharp instrument. No one was harmed in the filming of the first (and last) tv culinary special.
