ViLLA GioLi’S HiSToRY

Marchesi Cerrina Feroni

Villa Gioli was built at the end of the eighteenth-century in Fauglia, on the southern hills of Pisa.

At the beginning it was built as a hunting lodge. during the second part of the nineteenth-century, due to

the two brothers Francesco and luigi Bartolommei Gioli, the villa became what we now see: larger and with

one tall tower, where their big studio was built.

The two brothers, ancestors of the actual owners, the marques Cerrina Feroni, belonged to a rich and

aristocratic family. They took a significant part as painters in the “Macchiaioli” movement, meeting with

their friends “in cenacolo” in Fauglia, in the mid nineteenth-century.

Painters like Fattori, lega, signorini, Kienerk e Cecconi came to this beautiful place to observe and study

nature. This is the landscape which was closely tied to the pictorial culture of the Gioli.

The Macchiaiolis caused a revolution in the art of that time, which changed the standards of italian painting

as the impressionist movement did in the France.

These artists came to Fauglia to paint, study and read in the very large and sunny studio on the top of the

tower, from were they could have a marvellous sight of the hills.

Because of its very interesting past Villa Gioli has been recognized by the soprintendenza alle Belle Arti as a

site of particular historical and artistical importance.

duomo

Pisa's cathedral was paid for with spoils brought home after Pisans attacked an Arab fleet entering

Palermo in 1063. Begun a year later, the cathedral, with its striking cladding of alternating bands of green

and cream marble, became the blueprint floor for romanesque churches throughout Tuscany. The elliptical

dome, the first of its kind in europe at the time, was added in 1380.

inside, don't miss the extraordinary early-14th-century octagonal pulpit in the north aisle. sculpted from

Carrara marble by Giovanni Pisano and featuring nude and heroic figures, its depth of detail and heightening

of feeling brought a new pictorial expressionism and life to Gothic sculpture. Pisano's work forms a striking

contrast to the controversial 2001 pulpit and altar by italian sculptor Giuliano Vangi

Battistero

The unusual round baptistry has one dome piled on top of another, each roofed half in lead, half in tiles,

and topped by a gilt bronze John the Baptist (1395). Construction began in 1152, but it was

remodelled and continued by nicola and Giovanni Pisano more than a century later and finally completed in

the 14th century. inside, the hexagonal marble pulpit (1260) by nicola Pisano is the highlight. Pisan scientist

Galileo Galilei (who, so the story goes, came up with the laws of the pendulum by watching a lamp in Pisa's

cathedral swing), was baptised in the octagonal font (1246). don't leave without climbing to the upper

leaning Tower

yes, it's true: the leaning Tower leans. Construction started in 1173 but stopped a decade later when the

structure's first three tiers started tilting. in 1272 work started again, with artisans and masons attempting

to bolster the foundations but failing miserably. despite this, they kept going, compensating for the lean by

gradually building straight up from the lower storeys. Access to the leaning Tower is limited to 40 people at

one time – children under eight are not allowed in/up and those aged eight to 12 years must hold an adult's

hand. To avoid disappointment, book in advance online or go straight to a ticket office when you arrive in

Pisa to book a slot for later in the day. Visits last 30 minutes and involve a steep climb up 300-odd

occasionally slippery steps

Piazza dei Miracoli

Pisans claim that Campo dei Miracoli is among the most beautiful urban spaces in the world. Certainly, the

immaculate walled lawns provide a gorgeous setting for the Cathedral, Baptistry and Tower; on the other

hand, few places boast so many tat-waving hawkers.Visits are limited to groups of 40 and children under

eight years are not allowed entrance; entry times are staggered and queuing is predictably inevitable. it is

wise to book ahead.Flanking the Campo, beautiful Camposanto cemetery is said to contain soil shipped from

Calvary during the Crusades. look out for the 14th-century fresco The Triumph of death on the southern

Facing the river is this magnificently restored, 14th-century building that has a striking dusty-blue facade.

temporary exhibitions.

The “strada delle colline pisane” (literally “The wine road of the Pisan hills”) is a

route around san Miniato through vineyards, wineries and cellars besides historical, cultural and landscape

attractions, in a wine-growing area, to discover its excellences.

Volterra (45 minutes by car)

Volterra is a walled town in Tuscany with medieval and renaissance buildings, a roman theater, and

etruscan sites. it's one of Tuscany's most evocative hill towns but usually has far fewer tourroman Theater,

Forum, and Baths: Construction started on the roman Theater in the 1st century BC. Behind the theater are

remains of roman baths dating from the 4th century Ad. There are also remains of the roman forum. during

the middle ages these sites were part of a rubbish dump and were buried until excavations began in 1951.

Piazza dei Priori: The main square is one of the most impressive in Tuscany. On the piazza is the 13th cen-

tury Palazzo dei Priori, the oldest town hall in Tuscany. Also on the piazza are the 14th-century Palazzo

Vescovile and the back of the cathedral.

Cathedral and Baptistry: The duomo, or cathedral, dates from 1120 when it was constructed on the site of a

previous church. it has a romanesque facade and an entrance added in the 13th century. The interior was

modified in the late 16th century in renaissance style and has a richly decorated ceiling and several chapels

with frescoes or wood panels and a 12th century marble pulpit. The octagonal Baptistery dates from the

13th century although parts of it may be older. its facade is decorated with green and white marble stripes

and the dome dates from the 15th century.

Medieval Wall and Gates: 13th century walls enclose the historic center. There are six gates in the walls into

the center, dating from the 13th to 16th centuries. Porta san Francesco still has traces of the original

frescoes. From Porta san Felice there are views of the countryside beyond the town. Two fonts have also

been preserved. One of them, Fonte di docciola, was used in the middle ages to provide water for mills and

the wool industry. near san Felice font, built in 1319, are remains of the etruscan wall.

etruscan sites: At the highest point of Volterra is the etruscan acropolis with panoramic views of the

surrounding countryside. The archeological site is part of a park that includes foundations of two etruscan

temples, dwellings from the Hellenistic period, a system of cisterns, and medieval tower ruins. Porta All'

Arco, the Arch gate, has sides possibly dating back to the 5th century BC with the arch and heads dating

from the 3rd to 2nd century BC. etruscan tombs, carved into sandstone below the ground, can be found in

several places.

Museums: The Guarnacci etruscan Museum, founded in 1761, was one of europe's first public musuems. The

large collection of artifacts is housed in the 13th century Palazzo dei Priori. The Civic Museum and Art

Gallery are housed in the 15th century

Palazzo Minucci-solaini and includes paintings and art works from medieval to modern times. A Museum of

sacred Art is housed in the Bishop's Palace.

Medicea Fortress: The fortress, high on the hill, consists of the rocca Antica and the rocca nuova.

san Gimignano (45 minutes by car)

san Gimignano, known as the City of Beautiful Towers, is a classic medieval walled hill town in Tuscany, italy.

its 14 surviving medieval towers create a beautiful skyline visible from the surrounding countryside. Originally

there were 72 towers, some as tall as 50 meters, built by patrician families probably to demonstrate their

wealth and power.

san Gimignano's historic center is a unesCO world heritage site for its architecture. during the middle ages,

the town was an important center for trade and for pilgrims travelling to or from rome on the Via Francigena.

san Gimignano was once a big grower of crocuses to produce saffron which they exported. There are still a

few small saffron producers. Today san Gimignano's main product is a white wine, Vernaccia, that comes from

grapes in the surrounding vineyards. you can try it several places in town.

For la Collegiata - san Gimignano's 11th century duomo, la Collegiata, has an interior lavishly decorated with

14th century frescoes, floor to ceiling, illustrating the life of Christ and the Old Testament. in the Chapel of

santa Fina is a 15th century fresco showing san Gimignano's towers as they were then.

Palazzo del Popolo Civic Museum - The Civic Museum is inside the Palazzo del Popolo. The museum contains

some outstanding art work and frescoes from the13th-15th centuries, including the famous sala di dante with

frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli.

Torture Museum - The Museo della Tortura is inside the Torre della diavola. it has a large display of torture ins-

truments, some of which are still in use today in various parts of the world.

Archaeology Museum - The Museo Archeologico, in a former convent, has a small collection of etruscan arti-

facts. The etruscans were the first civilization to occupy what's now san Gimignano.

Museum of sacred Art - The museum has a small collection of religious art including 14th century illuminated

choir books.

sant'Agostino - The small 13th century church of sant'Agostino is worth visiting for its charming frescoes, its

elaborate marble altar, and the 15th century carved tomb of san Bartolo.

la rocca - The remains of the 14th century fortress above the town are worth visiting for the views of san Gi-

mignano's towers and the countryside. Walk up the hill from Piazza delle erbe. There's also a wine museum and

an outdoor cinema in summer.

Medieval Fountains - The 9th century Fonti Medievali on Via delle Fonti is where medieval townspeople got

water and did their laundry. http://www.turismo.intoscana.it

lucca (45 minutes by car)

With its imposing 16th century ramparts still wrapped around the compact village sitting on flat ground, lucca

offers the casual stroller wonderful opportunities to walk off that heavy Tuscan lunch without breaking a

sweat.

lucca sits on an alluvial plateau near the serchio river, 19 meters above sea level. lucca is located 30 kilome-

ters northeast of the Pisa airport and 85 kilometers west of Florence in northern Tuscany. lucca was an im-

portant junction in roman times, you'll see it in the north-south grid pattern of main streets and in the elliptical

plan of the "Piazza Anfiteatro" . To the north of lucca lie the Apuane Alps with their famous marble quarries,

spas and mineral water springs, streams, woods and caves.

Casa Guinigi was the fifteenth-century home of lucca's leading family. like rich folks of the period, they built

a tower. This one, however, is unique for the oaks that grow from it (and down into the room below). you can

climb up and get wonderful views of lucca in all directions. Check your camera battery before you go--it's 230

steps back down.

lucca and Giacomo Puccini

lucca was the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini (in 1858), one of italy's most famous operatic composers.

Today you can visit his birth house, which is now a museum, at Corte s. lorenzo, 9 (via di Poggio) in Piazza

della Cittadella, featuring a bronze statue of Puccini in the center. The Puccini Festival, held in an open-air

theater in nearby Torre del lago, allows opera lovers to feel the inspiration of the surroundings Puccini

chose to live in. The theater opens out directly to a view of lake Massaciuccoli with the Apuan Alps in the

background. The Puccini festival is held May-August. see the official Puccini Festival web site for more. if

you go, take some good mosquito repellent.

lucca's ramparts - The Medieval Walls

lucca is surrounded entirely by 16th century walls. in the 19th century, trees were planted and now the

ramparts can be walked or cycled. it's approximately three miles around the oval. Bicycles can be rented;

the top is paved.

The Villas of lucca

if you have a car, or find a tour, you can take in the Villas of lucca, a string of grand villas and their formal

gardens located to the north of lucca and open to the public. if you do the whole tour, you'll end up in

Collodi, where you can visit Collodi, the birthplace of Pinocchio, where you can visit the Pinocchio Park,

great for the kids.

lucca Famous Churches

The romanesque duomo di san Martino, completely rebuilt between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries,

contains the Volto santo (Holy Face), a wooden figure of Christ. The Volto santo is believed to be the face

of Christ, carved by nicodemus who was present at the crucifixion.

The facade of san Michele in Foro found in Piazza san Michele is probably the most photographed church in

lucca. if it looks tacked on, it's because they spent all the money on it, and didn't have enough left to raise

the church as high as the facade. The columns in the facade are all different, and the archangel crowning

the church features retractable wings to survive high winds. Puccini sang in the choir here. Open daily

7:40-noon and 3-6.

lucca in a different light

if you happen to be around lucca in september, the luminaria di santa Croce features the the old town

awash in candelight as "il Volto santo," a wooden sculpture of Christ is carried through the cobbled streets

of the old town to the duomo.

Other Attractions

For a comprehensive list of the major attractions in lucca, see lucca Top Attractions. Of course, as in any

city, a major attraction is wandering the medieval streets and seeing the little details that are normally

hundreds of years old. lucca is a great strolling town because very little traffic is found inside the walls.

near lucca

The town of Barga, north of lucca on the edge of the Garfagnana region and the Apuane Alps (Alpi Apuane),

is considered one of the most beautiful medieval walled cities in Tuscany, yet it's only lightly touristed.

Torre del lago Puccini is a small town on the shores of lake Massaciuccoli where the Puccini festival is held.

lake lovers will love the lake.

Massa Carrara (35 minutes by car) a Tuscan town in the province of Massa, is undoubtedly one of the most

beautiful in the world. The Ancient romans were the first to extract the famous marble and use it – in the

Pantheon and Trajan’s Column, for instance. later on, Michelangelo’s david and many other famous

renaissance sculptures were carved in it.

When you’re on the coast and look towards Carrara in the distance, the mountains in the background, the

Apuan Alps, appear to be covered with snow, even is summer. Well, this snow is actually the gigantic cave di

marmo, the huge exposed caves of marble which men have been exploiting for two thousand years.

if you want to visit the area on your own, just follow the A12 motorway along the Tuscan coast and take the

exit leading to Carrara, where you’ll find indications for the two quarries which can be visited by tourists.

The Fantiscritti marmo tour will take you into an indoor quarry. Whilst this is fascinating, with good weather

you should opt for a visit to the outdoor quarries with the guides from the Carrara marble tour (10

euro/adult and 5 euro/child) so as not to miss out on the view and the amazing drive up the mountain.

For more background information on the area, its people and the local food (the famous lardo di

Colonnata), i recommend you take the guided tour with serena. you may also want to try out her tips for a

lunch in the area: www.osterianellapia.it and www.damafalda.com.

siena (60 minutes by car).

surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, siena is one of the most beautiful cities of italy.

set on three hills, the city is drawn together by winding alleyways and steep steps, whilst the Piazza del

Campo stands at its heart, and the duomo and st Maria della scala serve as additional cultural landmarks.

Famed for the "Palio", the annual historic horse-races that take place on 2 July and 16 August, it is also

home to one of the oldest universities in europe, which ensures a vibrant italian student atmosphere

throughout the academic year. in addition to the bustling daily life of the streets and squares of the city,

siena offers many cultural events, concerts, cinema, theatre and a wide range of sporting activities.

A fine collection of frescoes, paintings, sculptures and decorations. The Certosa in Calci was founded in

1366, although it has undergone many changes in the centuries since then. How it appears today is largely

thanks to the renovation work carried out from the 1730s, mainly under the priorship of Giuseppe Alfonso

Maggi (1763-1787). As a result of these alterations, the building today has a late Baroque style. After the

upheaval and banishment during the napoleonic period (1814), the monks returned to the Certosa as

guardians until 1972. The Certosa was opened to the public in 1866, when the monastery became state

property. The museum was developed after the Certosa was abandoned by its order of monks in 1972.

Visitors can tour the cloisters, the monks’ cells, the church, the sacristy, the hermitage chapels, the

capitulary areas, the refectory, the Grand duke’s apartment, the guest quarters and the art gallery.

Pietrasanta (30 minutes by car)

Pietrasanta, italy is a historic medieval and artistic town in northern Tuscany sometimes called the City of

the Artists or small Athens for its marble studios and monuments. The town has roman origins but the

modern town is named for its founder Guiscardo Pietrasanta who built it in the mid-thirteenth century as

part of the republic of lucca. unlike many popular Tuscan towns, Pietrasanta isn't a hill town and its historic

center is a pleasant place for strolling. it's an important center for working marble and was used as a

marble source by Michelangelo. several international artists live or work here and there are art galleries

and exhibits. The Bozzetti Museum is a very important museum of sculpture and sketches (see sights

livorno (30 minutes by car)

Tuscany’s second-largest city and a quintessential port town, with a beautiful waterfront and many beaches.

la Piccola Venezia

The area known as Piccola Venezia or 'little Venice' is crossed with small canals built during the 17th

century using Venetian methods of reclaiming land from the sea. Fortezza nuova , built for the Medici court

in the late 16th century, is the quarter's main attraction although little of it remains. Canals link it with the

Fortezza Vecchia , constructed 60 years earlier on the waterfront. Great fun is to walk or jump on a tour

boat and explore the waterways flanked by faded, peeling apartments and brightly decorated with strings

of washing hanging out to dry. What this area lacks in gondolas and tourists, it makes up for with a certain

shabby-chic charm, and tow paths intersected with the occasional waterside cafe. end 'little Venice'

explorations on a high on gorgeous Piazza dei domenicani , across the bridge at the northern end of Via

Borra. Chiesa di santa Catarina , with its ancient, thick stone walls, stands sentry on the western side of the

square as it did for the Medicis four centuries ago.

livorno's Central Market is one of the highlights on any visit to the city. The huge building towers over the

main canal on the scali saffi and is easily reached from Piazza Cavour. it dates from the late-19th century

and was designed by Angiolo Badaloni who was probably inspired by Parisian architecture of the same pe-

riod.

The market is open every morning from Monday to saturday (8am-1pm) and is well worth a visit.

Firenze

Capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks

of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the italian peninsula. it

is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science, the cradle of the

renaissance, Florence is one of europe’s great art cities. Giotto’s frescoes, Michelangelo’s david, canvases

by Botticelli, leonardo da Vinci and a host of other greats in the uffizi Gallery… there’s so much exquisite

art and architecture, it’s difficult to know where to start.

But Florence is also a living city with a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, and a lively cultural movida

that goes beyond old masters to embrace opera, classical music and contemporary art. Handsome, historic,

full of quirky shops and quality crafts, and close to the vine-covered hills of Chianti, it’s one of europe’s

most civilised destinations.

Puccini Festival

July - August

The Puccini Festival and its history

Torre del lago, home of the Puccini Festival, lies between the lake of Massaciuccoli and the Tyrrhenian sea,

4 kilometres far from the magnificent beaches of Viareggio on the Tuscan riviera, 18 kilometres from lucca

and Pisa. The Festival welcomes about 40.000 spectators every year to its open-air theatre, just a few steps

from the Villa Mausoleum where Giacomo Puccini lived and worked. His mortal remains are now in a small

chapel inside the Villa. Torre del lago is a favourite destination of opera lovers and tourists who wish to

visit the places where the most beloved composer of the 20th century lived.

The Puccini Festival was born in 1930 following Puccini’s wishes. “… i always come out here and take a boat

to go and shoot snipes … but once i would like to come here and listen to one of my operas in the open

air…”. (Puccini in a letter to Giovacchino Forzano in november 1924, before he left to the clinic of Brussels

where he died shortly after). The author of la Bohème and Madama Butterfly, “the last great poet of the

italian opera, the best composer of operas italy and the whole world had in our century” (roman Vlad),

expressed his wish to see his creatures come to life in the extraordinary natural stage offered by the Massa-

ciuccoli lake.

Forzano (platwright and librettist of suor Angelica and Gianni schicchi, also director of Turandot’s first night

at la scala Theatre, Milan, on April 25th 1926) was so impressed by those words that, after Puccini’s death,

he decided to realise his dream. in 1930, together with Pietro Mascagni, who had been fellow-student and

room-mate to Puccini, Forzano began to carry out the first performances of Puccini’s operas on the

lakeshore, in front of the Maestro’s house.

in 1966 the Festival moved to the reclaimed land just near the small lake harbour. Here the present theatre

was built, a large structure enjoying the charming background of Massaciuccoli lake with the small villages

on the opposite shore, whose flickering lights at night assure an unforgettable natural scenery to the

performances taking place on the wide stage.

during summer several collateral events connected to Puccini’s music and contemporary art, both

distinctive features of Torre del lago Festival, will be implemented in the most charming sites of Tuscany.
