2. The class may (not confirmed) visit a local vet clinic or you may bring evidence of completion of 6 (a) or (b) to earn the badge at the college Weather (morning and afternoon classes)

An excellent resource is http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/. These can all be accomplished before 29 March and brought in a notebook to the class.

1. Define meteorology. Explain what weather is and what climate is. Name five dangerous weather-related conditions. Give the safety rules for each when outdoors and explain the difference between a severe weather watch and a warning. Discuss the safety rules with your family.

2. Explain the difference between high- and low- pressure systems in the atmosphere. Tell which is related to good and to poor weather. Draw cross sections of a cold front and a warm front, showing the location and movements of the cold and warm air, the frontal slope, the location and types of clouds associated with each type of front, and the location of precipitation.

3. Tell what causes wind, why it rains, and how lightning and hail are formed. 4. Identify and describe clouds in the low, middle, and upper levels of the atmosphere.

Relate these to specific types of weather. Draw a diagram of the water cycle and label its major processes. Explain the water cycle to your counselor.

5. Identify some human activities that can alter the environment, and describe how they affect the climate and people.

6. Describe how the tilt of Earth’s axis helps determine the climate of a region near the equator, near the poles, and across the area in between.

When you come prepared: look for some hands-on activities, including some observing, recording and reporting, plotting and analyzing; and possibly walk through how a meteorological model works, which is useful to understand because – conceptually – it applies to many other modeling constructs.

Eagle Required: *Citizenship in the Community (morning and afternoon classes)

2. Bring certification of requirement 3, 4, 5 from a parent/guardian 3. Bring a memory stick to save a copy of your public presentation (7) which will be

developed in class. *Communications & Public Speaking (All day)

Sampson Community College Saturday, March 29, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM $12.00 per Scout STEM Merit Badges to be offered!

Tuscarora Council Merit Badge College

This is an excellent opportunity for Scouts to earn merit badges that are seldom offered elsewhere. They will learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Registration needs to be handled by the Troop using this and the Class Selection Form. Individual registrations will not be accepted. The cost covers the materials for the classes, the facility, and a Merit Badge College patch.

Lunch will be at the Troop’s discretion. There are various fast food options close by as well as opportunities to “brown bag it” yourself. There will be a place on campus for you to sit and eat as a Troop if you choose to eat on location. (The college dining facility will not be serving food.) Troops need to follow Scouting guide lines and 2 leaders should be present on campus. Leaders can volunteer to teach a course, assist with a course OR there will be several adult training sessions available. For more information about merit badge classes and registration contact Lucy Grist at [email protected]
