Welcome to the second of our seven day series on getting the most out of your first week with Wordtracker. We’re going to show you how to analyze your market and identify potential niches that would be particularly profitable.
Tutorial 2. Assess your marketwith keyword research
A classic rookie mistake in selling products and services online is to not appropriately segment your market. Take
auto makers as an example. Everyone needs to drive, but not everyone has the same needs. Families like the
roominess of minivans whereas urban singletons opt for smaller, sexier cars.

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
It’s likely you chose your last car based on its safety record, mileage rating or whatever set of criteria was important
to you. The key to success in selling cars or anything else is to narrowly target each of these groups and speak
directly to them, and if you want your online business to succeed you’ll have to first uncover the niches in your
market and then decide which ones are worth pursuing.
Fortunately, Wordtracker helps you do both.
We start with the blue keyword research tool (the find Keywords tool) which can help identify which terms your
audiences are actually searching on.

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
For example, say you were a bank and you were looking for opportunities in the lucrative credit card market.
Rather than trying to target everyone who wants a credit card, right behind 500 other banks, you need to do a bit of
research in order to single out a couple of niches. Let’s check ‘include plurals’ so that it brings up both ‘credit card’
and ‘credit cards’ and then select ‘exact keyword inside a search term’ to make sure that all keywords contain the
exact phrase ‘credit card’.

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
In scanning through these results, I’ve spotted two potential contenders – ‘business credit cards’ and ‘prepaid
credit cards.’ Let’s dig a bit deeper to ascertain their suitability as niche targets. At first glance it would seem that the
‘business credit cards’ predicted daily search count of 339 is pretty meagre, but keep the following in mind.
This applies only to the exact term ‘business credit cards’ – no more and no less. Searches not included in this
count would be items like ‘business credit card’ singular ‘small business credit cards’, ‘business credit card
offers’ etc - although all these keywords are also important for assessing the size of your niche. So, we’ll just let
Wordtracker add them up. Just click on ‘search’

‘Search & save’:
and we’re going to make a new project called ‘credit card’, and the list name is populated for you, so we just click
‘Search & Save to list’:
And now repeat the process for ‘business credit cards.’

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
Next, without leaving this results page you can compare each saved list. Just click the link marked ‘show all lists’
next to our last project which is listed as ‘credit card’:
and at a glance, you can see the total number of searches containing each list’s seed word, and the number of
different keywords used.

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
As you can see we end up with more than 1600 searches for ‘prepaid credit cards’. This is significantly more than the
635 cited for prepaid credit cards alone. Now, just click on the name of your project or list to see more detail and
refine your lists.
Note here that there are more searches for the single keyword ‘business credit cards’ then ‘prepaid credit cards’, but
take a look at all searches containing those seed words and we see that the prepaid credit card niche is almost twice
as large. It always pays to do the math.

Day 2. Assess your market with keyword research
And don’t forget, you’ll want to make sure to add related terms. As you learned in the previous lesson, this is done in
the orange Related keywords tool.
So, to summarize. Locate the most popular keywords in your target market. For each potential niche, see how its
keyword is used in longer search terms and save the results as separate lists. Then, compare the total number of
searches for all keywords in your different lists quickly and without leaving the page. Finally, drill down into the
project and add up the total number of searches for all your lists to assess the overall size of the market.
