In this poster presentation we will : overview various types of presentation/video methods present some available free (and not-so-free) tools that you can use to create your own educational videos and help you find your own style walk through how I make videos with screencasting plus audio, much like Khan Academy or Ted-Ed), but also includes face capturing to add a personalized touch to your content These videos, can be easily made, even for novice! Generating a personalized lecture will allow your students to generate a connection to you, as their instructor, while also learning the material. So, be sure to view this video poster to benefit you and your students during these online times! For students screencasting and archiving lessons, either embedded into your LMS, Articulate/Rise or your own YouTube channel give students’ a personalized lecture. This means that students watch the lesson videos in their own time, at their own pace, and wherever they like! They also can pause, rewind, or replay you as often as they need to in order to best understand the material. Getting started: Start small! You don’t have to try everything at once, try a welcome or encouragement video to start. Link it! Be sure to tie the supplemental videos to learning objectives and course goals to unify the course. Pick your favorite! Numerous techniques are available, we have presented a subset of techniques, but many other ideas and modifications are out there. I am happy to discuss further, join me during my session! Higher Tech Methods My Method for Recording Videos: Screen Capture Programs Other Options Idea: Increase instructor presence while you present your PowerPoint slides. How it works: Just recording yourself with a video camera (Option 3) is pretty straightforward with a webcam or even just a cellphone. There are many presentation tools that allow for recording a slide- show presentation with audio (Option 2). Both are simple, effective and can allow for added closed captioning. A simple white board Document camera Pros: - Quick easy and low tech strategy requiring minimal devices. - Shows your face to students increasing instructor presence. - Allows for a pointer to be used to highlight as you speak - Engages students. - Uploading to YouTube allows for closed captions and transcript. Cons: - Requires planning and a bit of time to convert and upload file. - Should leave a portion of the screen for video capture and captions. Pros: - Engages students in active & scaffolded note taking. - Allows for hand written/drawn items as well as imported images that can be drawn on. - Paces lectures. Cons: - Requires advanced teacher work to design notes page or drawing outline. - Will require a writing device. Editing Videos My simple 1 minute editing: 1. Trim out extra beginning and ending recording. Trimming is critical to making sure that your video starts quickly and you don’t lose your audience’s attention. 2. Adjust audio levels to minimize any back ground noise (ie if a dog barks or a siren goes by while you were recording). Options: - Camtasia Studio ($200, however, CNM has a FREE license for all faculty) - iPad Video Capture- Free but must have iPad - Zoom- Free - Camstudio- Free - Screenhunter- Free - Snagit- Free trial version Programs/Devices I use: I utilize Camtasia Studio, Sketchbook and a Wacom tablet to make my videos. How it works: These capture, me, my audio and my screen at the same time and autogenerates. I then upload the video to my YouTube channel which autogenerates closed captions and a transcript for students.
