The Longest Bus Journey The five-part documentary series Transoceânica – The World’s Longest Bus Journey takes the viewer through the heart of South America. The series follows a bus that travels from Rio de Janeiro to Lima. The bus trip lasts six days and covers a distance of 6,300 kilometers

- a journey of superlatives. A voyage filled with contrast: from the Atlantic, it leads initially through a savannah landscape, then through the Earth’s largest area of wetland, the Ama-zon jungle, and finally up to the Andes and the Pacific on the western side of the mountain range. The road movie affords the viewer a glimpse into the soul of South America. It shows the beauty of its nature and the pride of its people, but also some of the negatives: environ-mental pollution, poverty and crime.

Part 1 Starting SAT 4 Feb. 19:15

IN GOOD SHAPE

A Life Without Alcohol According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one person dies as a result of alcohol abuse every 10 seconds; with 140 million people thought to be addicted worldwide. The greater the economic prosperity of a nation, the more alcohol is consumed and the number of teetotalers is therefore smaller, says the WHO. Alcohol abuse is the third cause of pre-mature death after smoking and high blood pressure. The substance impacts severely on health. Alcohol is responsible for a whole host of illnesses, including liver and brain damage. The links between alcohol and cancer have been known for a long time. Alcoholism is an ill-ness that needs to be treated. Few manage to conquer their addiction alone. The symptoms of alcohol withdrawal are serious and carry a risk of death if the patient isn’t under medical supervision. In Good Shape shows what happens to the body during detox, and how ad-dicts can be helped to give up drinking for good.

Children of Sarajevo They were children when the war broke out in their home city of Sarajevo. The beleaguered capital became the symbol of the Bosnian war. For these children, that meant growing up under artillery fire, school classes held in air raid shelters, an omnipresent fear and daily reports of relatives and friends killed in the violence. Today, these children are young adults. A traumatized generation that feels forgot-ten – by Europe and at home in their own country. DW broadcasts the documentary Forgotten Children of Sarajevo.

CHECK-IN SPECIAL

Romantic Road In 1950, the Romantic Road was the first official tourist route to be opened in Ger-many, and it’s been a great success. Every year, more than 25 million people tour the route from the Main river to the Alps. In a special edition of Check-in, Nicole Frölich presents a selection of beauty spots on her journey from Würzburg via Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Augsburg to Füssen – a dis-tance of some 400 kilometers. A tour high-light: the presenter’s tandem paragliding flight over Neuschwanstein Castle.
