Summer is usually seen as adead season for TV. Most ofthe regular shows have goneinto hibernation until the fall, and theprime-time hours are filled with reruns.

It's even worse during summerslike this one. Few networks are willingto risk challenging the ratings jugger-naut that is the Olympic Games, as thenation tunes in to cheer on its favoriteathletes.

Once in a while, though, a gemsparkles through the summer haze. OnSunday, July 15, USA premiered thehighly anticipated "Political Animals,"and the buzz around it suggests that itmay be one of this summer's hottestshows.

Announced earlier this year togreat fanfare, the limited-run serieshas attracted some top-tier talent toits roster, including Hollywood actressSigourney Weaver (the "Alien" series,"Avatar"). It will continue airing onSunday nights through the summer.

Coming in the middle of one of themost heated presidential campaigns inrecent memory, "Political Animals" is atopical tale of a former First Lady-turned-secretary of state. Afterdivorcing her womanizing husband, former president Bud Hammond,Elaine Hammond (Weaver) ran for thenation's top office herself. Althoughshe lost the nomination, her opponentgraciously named her his secretary ofstate.

If you're noticing a similarity with acertain other secretary of state, you'renot alone. Weaver herself hascommented on the parallel betweenher character and real-life Secretary ofState Hillary Clinton.

"When I first heard about it, Ithought "Oh, it's about Hillary,"Weaver said in an interview with the"L.A. Times." "But, really, from thefirst page on I knew that Elaine BarrishHammond is her own person. Hercircumstances are completely differentto Mrs. Clinton's. This is the story ofthe Hammond family. It's definitely notthe story of the Clinton family."

Similarities to the real world aside,

Weaver will no doubt make thecharacter her own. She is a criticallyacclaimed movie actress with aresume as long as her arm. She'sstarred in many Hollywood classics, including "Ghostbusters" (1984);"Alien" (1979) and its three directsequels; "Holes" (2003) and 2009'shuge hit, "Avatar." Where her resumeis lacking, however, is in television."Political Animals" is her first majorTV role, and her acting chops are abreath of fresh air in the summer TVdrought. Although she's never won anAcademy Award, she's beennominated for three (including two forBest Actress in a Leading Role), andhas a bevy of other acting awardsunder her belt.

As with almost any politician,Elaine Hammond's opponent is ajournalist. Susan Berg (Carla Gugino)is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporterwho's made a name for herself byexposing the family secrets of theHammonds. She's been eager to stickwith what's worked in the past, butafter muscling her way into aninterview with Hammond, shediscovers that there's far more to thiswoman than she once believed. AsBerg uncovers more and more of theinner workings of the Hammondfamily, she finds herself conflictedbetween her growing sense of loyaltyto a woman she respects and a careershe loves.

Having appeared in many moviesand TV shows, Gugino has a facethat's familiar to many. Recently, she's

been keeping herself busy, havingbeen in the Jim Carrey flick "Mr.Popper's Penguins" (2011),"Watchmen" (2009) and "AmericanGangster" (2007), among many otherfilms. This also isn't the first time thatshe's cut her teeth on a political showon the small screen; she had a part inthe Michael J. Fox comedy "Spin City"between 1996 and 1998.

With the top-notch acting,"Political Animals" would already bepretty guaranteed to attract a loyalfollowing. But it's not only on thescreen that the high level of talent isfound; a number of industry veteransstand behind the camera, too.

Filling multiple roles as creator, executive producer, director and writeris Greg Berlanti.

Let's get 'Political'Weaving a tale: Sigourney Weaver stars in USA political miniseries

STRANGE BAIT: This week, AnimalPlanet is launching a new fishingseries, and the cabler has suggested itwill employ the kind of ingenuityassociated with MacGyver. The realcatch here is that the man who willimitate the famed TV agent's inventiveways happens to be a professionalwrestler.

Eric Young, who currently performswith TNA Wrestling, will begin hisunusual adventure in "Off the Hook:Extreme Catches" when it premiereson Sunday, July 29.

The half-hour episodes will followYoung as he travels all over Americanwaters to learn some of the mostunique, strange and dangerous fishingtechniques from the best fishermen inthe country. Together, they'll revealthat there are far more ways to makea catch than with just the traditionalrod and hook.

"As an adrenaline junkie, when Icome home after a hard day's work, Ilike to kick back and enjoy somefishing," said Young. "But in 'Off theHook,' this is hardly relaxing becauseI'm setting out to do some of theworld's wildest, craziest fishingtechniques. But I'm up for tryinganything once!"

Crazy is certainly the word mostnon-fishers would choose when theydiscover that one of Young'schallenges will be to capture a 300-pound shark in Florida by using a pairof pantyhose. He'll also ride a kayakthrough whitewater rapids in anattempt to catch a massive bass inTexas. Then there's the strangetradition around Lake Michigan ofusing a fire extinguisher to launch livebait, which Young will also attempt.Other challenges will includeunderwater spear fishing and squidangling at night.

Young, whose real name is JeremyFritz, grew up in a rural area ofsouthwestern Ontario in Canada andhas been wrestling for TNA since2004.

A FIERY PAIR: Two populardaytime stars from competing soapoperas are joining forces to bring anunlikely love story to life in a newtelefilm.

Alison Sweeney and Greg Vaughanbegan production in Los Angeles last

month for "Two In," a new film forHallmark Channel that will premiereon the specialty station next year.

"Two In" will follow a singlemother who works as a 911 call centeroperator and takes a call from afirefighter who becomes injured whilebattling a blaze. Afterward, events intheir lives keep bringing them togetheruntil they finally give in to theirmutual attraction to each other.

Sweeney has spent two decadesplaying Sami Brady in the long-running NBC sudser "Days of ourLives." Since 2007, she has managedto balance those duties with her otherbig role as the host of the peacocknetwork's hit prime-time reality series"The Biggest Loser."

Vaughan actually left the daytimeairwaves in 2009 after starring asLucky Spencer in "General Hospital"since 2003. Before that, he did a shortstint on "The Young and the Restless"as Diego Guttierez. After Vaughan left"GH," he dabbled in prime-time guestwork, with spots on "90210," "TheCloser" and "GCB."

Interestingly, there are rumorscurrently circulating in the soap operaworld that Vaughan has signed on totake over the role of Eric Brady in"Days of our Lives," but NBC has notyet confirmed this news. If it turns outto be true, he'll be playing the part ofSami Brady's twin brother. Thecharacter was last portrayed by"Supernatural" star Jensen Ackles, who left the sudser in 2000.

"Two In," which was written byKaren Struck and Jim Buck, is beingdirected by Ernie Barbarash.

SINGING FOR CW: AnotherCanadian music sensation is crossingover to television work. After toppingthe charts with a hit single, Carly RaeJepsen will perform in the seasonpremiere of a hit CW series.

The Hollywood Reporter recentlyannounced that the British Columbianative, who is best known for hersingle "Call Me Maybe," will performone of her tracks on the Oct. 8 episodeof "90210."

She follows in the footsteps offellow Canuck Justin Bieber, who tried

his hand at acting a couple years agoin a guest spot for "CSI: Crime SceneInvestigation." Interestingly, Bieberhas been instrumental in Jepsen'smusical success ever since hismanager, Scooter Braun, signed her tohis School Boy Records label. She'llalso be Bieber's opening act for hisupcoming North American tour, whichbegins in September.

The singer-songwriter, whopreviously competed on Season 5 of"Canadian Idol," will play herself inthe episode as the headlining actwhen Adrianna (played by JessicaLowndes) makes her Las Vegas debut. However, the event is soured whenAdrianna hears of some bad newsregarding Dixon (Tristan Wilds).

"We fell in love with her songwhen we first heard it and used it inlast season's finale before it was a

national sensation," said executiveproducers Patti Carr and Lara Olsen ina joint statement. "We think she's anexciting artist and are thrilled to beable to have her music on the showagain, this time in a live performancein our season premiere."

"Call Me Maybe" has enjoyedtremendous success on American andCanadian radio as well as music chartsfrom all over the world. It's beencertified platinum in the U.S. andtopped Billboard's Hot 100 chartmultiple weeks in a row, while doingeven better in the Great White North.
