Why Arent More PeopleMarrying Today?BY JOEL HILLIKER

    see MARRYING page 12

F people, the idea of marriage stil l holds con-

siderable charm. A poll showed that more than percent of American high school seniors expect to

get married, and percent of those assume theyll remainwed to the same person for life. A survey of college stu-dents in England found percent want to marry. Amongadults who have never been married, percent want to be,according to a Pew poll from .

But dreams of marriage are failing to materialize formore and more of these people. In , percent ofAmerican adults were married; today, that number hasdropped to percent. In , percent had never mar-ried; today its percent. In , four in five -to--

year-old men were married; now, two in five are.

Whats going on? People want to marry but arent. Why?

Te reasons are many. But sociologists have identifiedone that I find of particular interest. It is that todays menat least in the eyes of todays womenarent qualified.

Many single men say they would like to be at least equal toif not better thantheir future spouse in terms of education andearning power. Te model of the male breadwinner has a longhistory, and remnants of it remain ingrained in the minds ofmany peopleboth men and women.

Te problem is, this ideal is increasingly at odds with real-ity.As Hanna Rosin writes in her book Te End o Men: Andthe Rise o Women,Te men may cling to traditional idealsabout themselves as providers,

but they are urther than ever

Israel Skips UNReview on RightsNEW YORK TIMES | January 29

R Israel didnot appear at a session of the Unit-ed Nations Human Rights Council inGeneva on uesday for a report by theCouncil as part of what is known asthe Universal Periodic Review process,in which al l member states hadpreviously participated.

We have encouraged the Israelis tocome to the Council and to tell theirstory and to present their own narra-tive of their own human rights situ-ation, the United States ambassadorto the council, Eileen ChamberlainDonahoe, said last week.

Te underlying concern expressedby many Council members in ues-days session is that Israels decision tostay away from the review had brokenestablished practice of cooperationobserved by all countries, opening thedoor to noncooperation by others.

If the Israeli government is notcareful, it will ruin an importantglobal human rights process for ev-erybody, Peter Splinter, a Geneva rep-resentative of Amnesty International,

commented in a blog post. Israels no-show reflects longstand-

ing frustration with the Councilsperceived anti-Israel bias, diplomatssay. More than half the resolutionspassed by the Council since it startedwork in have focused on Israel

over the treatment of Palestinians inIsraeli-occupied or Israeli-controlledareas. Israel is also the only countrythat is a standing item on the Coun-cils agenda.

Despite these tensions, Israel, untillast year, had preferred to work withthe Council and in December participated in the Councils review ofits human rights practices. Last May,however, Israel informed the Coun-cil it had decided to disengagefromwhat it called a political tool and

convenient platform, cynically used toadvance certain political aims, to bashand demonize Israel.

    Suicide Bombing AtU.S. Embassy

    ASSOCIATED PRESS | February 2

A suicide bomber deto-nated an explosive Friday in front

of the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, killinghimself and a guard at the entrancegate, officials said.

U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardi-one told reporters that a urkish citi-zen was also wounded in the : p.m.blast in the urkish capital.

Tere was no immediate claim ofresponsibility, but both Kurdish rebelsand Islamic militants are active inurkey.

Te bomb appeared to have ex-ploded inside the security checkpointat the side entrance to the embassy, but did not damage the inside of theembassy itself. footage showed theembassy door blown off its hinges.Te windows of nearby businesseswere also shattered by the power of theblast, and debris littered the ground

and across the road. Hurriyet newspaper said staff at the

embassy took shelter in [a] safe roominside the compound soon aer theexplosion.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassythanked urkey for its solidarity andoutrage over the incident. urkey isalso being deeply affected by the bru-tal civil war in neighboring Syria, andhas become a harsh critic of PresidentBashar Assads regime there. Te war

E forces chief has warned the current po-

litical crisis could lead to a collapse of the state.Gen. Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, in comments posted on

the militarys Facebook page, said such a collapse couldthreaten future generations. He made his statement fol-lowing a large military deployment in three cities along theSuez Canal where a state of emergency has been declared.

More than people have died in days of protests andviolence.

In response, President Mohamed Morsi has cut short aplanned European trip.

His spokesman said he would still visit Germany onWednesday as planned, but the two-day trip has been cut tojust a few hours and a visit to France has been cancelled.

On Monday night, thousands of people in Port Said,Ismailia and Suezwhere some of the worst unrest hasbeenignored a night-time curfew imposed by Morsi to

take to the streets. General Sisis lengthy statement appears to be a veiled

threat to protesters and opposition forces as well as an appealfor calm and an attempt to reassure Egyptians about the role

of the military, the s Yolande Knell in Cairo said.Te Egyptian Army appears to be trying to make several

statements at once.General Sisis remarksoriginally made to students at

a military academyare a strong reminder that the armedforces remain an important political and economic playerin Egypt.

Te generals comments criticized the destabilizingpower struggle between the different political forces. He istrying to assert the armys independence and its role as astrong pillar of the state.

He said the economic, political and social challengesfacing Egypt represented a real threat to the security of

Egypt and the cohesiveness of the Egyptian state.

n Israeli election: what happenedto the swing to the right?

Israeli Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahus hopes for a right-winggovernment were dashedlast Turs-day as votes were tallied for the Israelielection. Te Likud-Yisrael Beitenualliance headed by Netanyahu wonthe election with parliamentaryseatsfar less than the it heldpreviously. Te prime minister nowhas the first chance to form a gov-ernment, but without enough seatsto form a majority, he must form a

coalition government. Chances are,Netanyahu wil l look to Yesh Atid, therunners-up in the election to support

his new government. Yesh Atid worksoff a primarily centralist platform, with a domestic focus. While a changein domestic policy may have somebenefits for Israel, a government thatfocuses on issues internally may notbe in Israels best interests. Tere areriots in Jordan, Hezbollah in Leba-non, Syrian civil war in the north, theMuslim Brotherhood-led Egypt in thesouth, and the looming presence of anuclear-armed Iran to the east. Tereis Hamas in Gaza, Fatah in the West

Bank, and an increasingly liberal-ized government in the United States.Israel is surrounded by enemies, anda government largely focused ondomestic issues should be a cause forconcern for Jews.

n Israel prepares for Syrias fallIsrael is preparing for the fall of Syria, according to reports published lastSunday. Te Jewish nation has deployedtwo Iron Dome air defense batteries to

its north, including one near the cityof Haifa. Activity at Israels air forcebases has also increased, according to

local reports. Since the Syrian uprisingsbegan in March , dissident forceshave clashed with government troops athotspots throughout the nation. Israelfears that Syrians may soon resort tousing chemical weapons near Israelsborder. Israel cant afford to lose trackof Syrias weapons stockpiles, whichis why it is conducting intense sur-

veillance to its north. If the regime ofSyrian President Bashar al Assad falls, the weapons could fall into the handsof the rebels, and be very difficult to

track down. Te Israelis are preparingto defend themselves in case the worstshould happen. Israel stepped up itscountermeasures on uesday nightwhen an Israeli airstrike destroyed aconvoy crossing the border from Syriainto Lebanon. While reports are vagueabout what the convoy contained, thestrike shows that Israel is watchingthe border, and is willing to engageits military to prevent weapons beingdispersed to Israels neighbors.

A - diplomatic accord between the Vati-can and Israel is finally near completion, according to atop Israeli negotiator.

Israels Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalonwho

took part in the latest round of talkstold reporters that at aJanuary meeting in Jerusalem, representatives of the HolySee and the Israeli state were on the brink of concluding anagreement that would establish the juridical rights of theCatholic Church in Israel. Ayalonsaid that the agreement would beready for ratification when a newIsraeli government takes power.

All the groundwork is fin-ished, said Ayalon, adding thatthe accord will be nothing shortof a milestone in the relationshipbetween Israel and the Holy See.

Te Vatican-Israeli accordwas promised as part of theFundamental Agreement thatwas announced in , opening the way for Vatican recog-nition of Israel. Negotiations proceeded fitfully for severalyears, and had effectively stopped before U.S. interventionhelped prompt renewed talks beginning in . Since that

time, Israeli government spokesmen have oen said that anagreement was close, whereas Vatican officials have beenmore circumspect in their public statements.

A Vatican statement following the January meeting was

characteristically muted, saying only that the negotiations hadtaken place in a thoughtful and constructive atmosphere, that significant progress was made, and that participantsin the negotiations looked forward to a speedy conclusion of

the agreement. Te Vatican andIsraeli negotiators have agreed tomeet again in Rome in June .

According to aJerusalemPostreport, the current dra ofthe agreement establishes thatchurch properties will be exemptfrom taxation, but church-ownedbusiness will be taxed at the

usual rates. Te accord wouldprotect certain Catholic shrinesat Nazareth, Capernaum, and

the Mount of the Beatitudesfrom state expropriation. Teaccord reportedly does not include an agreement on theownership of the building that houses the site of the LastSupper, which is claimed by both Catholics and Jews.

France Is BankruptINDEPENDENT | January 29

F E MinisterMichel Sapin has admitted thecountry is totally bankrupt.

Te unexpected news came dur-ing a radio interview yesterday andis thought to have sent the countrys

business leaders into a state of shock.Tere is a state but it is a totally

bankrupt state, Mr. Sapin said. Tatis why we had to put a deficit reduc-tion plan in place, and nothing shouldmake us turn away from that objective.

Mr. Sapins totally bankruptstatement is likely to cause hugeembarrassment for President FranoisHollande, who will be le to undothe potential damage to his socialistgovernments reputation.

It also calls into further questionHollandes controversial tax andspend policies that have seen numer-ous entrepreneurs and high-profilecelebrities leave the country.

Te comments came as PresidentHollande attempts to improve theimage of the French economy aerpledging to reduce the countrys defi-

cit by cutting spending by bil lion($81.9 billion) over the next five yearsand increasing taxes by billion($27.3 billion).

Tere are even reports that Nico-las Sarkozy, the previous presidentof France, is preparing to move toLondon with his wife Carla Bruni foreconomic reasons.

Prime Minister David Cameronhas previously said that Britain will

roll out the red carpet to attract

wealthy French people.Pierre Moscovici, Frances finance

minister, immediately tried to playdown Mr. Sapins comments, sayingthey were inappropriate.

Hitlers RiseYAHOO NEWS | January 30

O th anniversary of AdolfHitlers rise to power, ChancellorAngela Merkel urged Germans to al-ways fight for their principles and notfall into the complacency that enabledthe Nazi dictator to seize control.

    Speaking Wednesday at the

NAIONAL POS anarticle a few days ago headlinedEurope: Te worlds new superpower.

Written by Anne Applebaum, whofeatures regularly as a WashingtonPostcolumnist, very oen on Europeanaffairs, the article observes: A decadeof war is now ending, U.S. PresidentBarack Obama declared Monday.Maybe thats true in America, but it isnt true anywhere else.Extremists are still plotting acts of terror. Authoritarian andautocratic regimes are still using violence to preserve theirpower. Te United States can step back from internationalconflicts, but that wont make them disappear.

And, as they say, theres the rub.

Since the implosion of the years ago, the UnitedStates has been generally cast in the role of global po-liceman. Past administrations generally having made athorough hash of that golden opportunity, the current U.S.administration has read the public mood and is bringingits troops home from the worlds hot spots and signalingentry into a new grand isolationism.

Te moment could hardly be worse.Tis world is caught up in a general global disorder of

huge proportions. Wherever one looksbe it internationalrelations, economics, finance, social dislocation, moralitythe globe teeters on a precipice, overlooking a giant col-

lapse of its systems of government and general social orderinto absolute chaos, under a constant threat of terrorism.

Anne Applebaum has struck on a solution that is entirelyconsistent with what we have published for the past seven

decades: []here is another power that shares Americaseconomic and political values, that possesses sophisticatedmilitary technology and is also very interested in stoppingthe progress of fanatical movements, especially in NorthAfrica and the Middle East. Tat power is Europe (ibid).

Dare we repeat, nature abhors a vacuum, nowhere moreso than in the arena of international relations.

Te increasing isolationism of America is disturbing thewhole global balance of power. Who will reestablish equi-librium in global affairs?

As Applebaum observes: But whats the alternative? If America is to enjoy peace in our timean expressionnow deployed by both Barack Obama and Neville Cham-

berlainwhile the rest of the world remains at war, thensomeone else will fill the vacuum. A glance at the othercandidatesChina, Russia, perhaps Qatar or another Gulfnationought to make us all stop giggling about cheese-eating surrender monkeys and start offering logistical andmoral support. Europe may not be the best superpower. Butits the only one weve got.

As we have said, watch for the outcome of the electionsin Italy in February and in Germany in September for anindication as to the future direction of European politics.

One thing is for sure: Te way is already prepared forthis leader to take on leadership of the worlds new super-

E have the means to shut down keyparts of Londons financial center at a stroke if Britainle the European Union and would not hesitate to do so,leading central bank experts have warned.

Membership of the EU single market is the UKs onlylegal defense against an onslaught of regulations aimed atforcing banks and fund managers to decamp to the euro-zone, they say.

It would be catastrophic and suicidal for Britain toleave. Te UK would lose the protection it currently enjoysas the eurozones major financial center, said AthanasiosOrphanides, a former member of the European CentralBanks governing council.

Mr. Orphanides said the is already clamping downon payments, clearing and settlement systems conductedin euros outside its jurisdiction, a move deemed necessaryto head off future crises. Te only thing stopping regula-

tion that would shi all such activities from London to theeurozone is the legal protection the city enjoys in the EU,he told theDaily elegraph.

While Britain is in a very strong position now as anEU member outside the eurozone, this would evaporate themoment the UK tears up its membership card. Te UKwould be the big loser. I dont believe it will happen becauseBritain has the best technocrats in the world, and the Brit-ish people are rational, he said.

Legal guerrilla warfare is already under way and EUofficials say privately that the struggle for control over thefinancial industry is reaching a critical point, with Britain

rapidly losing key allies. Dino Kos, a former head of markets at the New York

Fed, said the city is more vulnerable to a regulatory squeezethan people realize. Governments have the power to con-trol where clearing happens, and therefore where tradinghappens. Central banks can say businesses must have an

onshore presence, he told a Bloomberg forum. Leaked documents from the Banque de France in

revealed that Paris was pushing behind the scenes for aFrench clearing house, explicitly to break Londons strong-hold. France has since tried to push through a directiverequiring clearers to have access to liquidity for eurotrades. Te big danger is that foreign banks and fundsquietly locate their new business in Frankfurt and Paris, and aer five years we will discover that the center of grav-ity has moved, he said.

Deutsche Bank bases its global business and trading inLondon with , staff in the UK, much to the irritationof German lawmakers. Frances top lender Paribas has

a big trading center and , staff in Britain. Both banksare under political pressure to repatriate operations.

Te regulatory assault on the city has been an escalatingdrama since the Lehman crash in . Tree EU agencieshave been created covering banking, insurance and mar-kets with binding powers that can overrule a British vetoon key matters in extremis, effectively stripping Westmin-ster of final control over regulation of the city for the firsttime in years.

Giles Merritt, the head of Friends of Europe in Brussels, warned that EU leaders could become vindictive if Britainsin/out referendum degenerates into a slanging match. If

British euroskeptics turn it into a sneering campaign againstEurope, then the Europeans will play hardball, he said.

Catastrophic EU Exit Would Leave London DefenselessAmbrose Evans-Pritchard, TELEGRAPH | January 31

opening of a new exhibit at the opog-raphy of error memorial document-ing Hitlers election, Merkel noted thatGerman academics and students atthe time happily joined the Nazis onlya few months later in burning booksdeemed subversive.

Te rise of the Nazis was madepossible because the elite of Ger-

man society worked with them, butalso, above all else, because most inGermany at least tolerated this rise,Merkel said.

Te fact that Hitler was able todestroy German democracy in onlysix months serves as a warning todayof what can happen if the public isapathetic, Merkel said.

Human rights do not assert them-selves on their own; freedom does notemerge on its own; and democracy

does not succeed on its own, Merkelsaid. No, a dynamic society ... needspeople who have regard and respectfor one another, who take responsibil-ity for themselves and others, wherepeople take courageous and open de-cisions and who are prepared to acceptcriticism and opposition.

    Inge Deutschkron, a -year-old

Jewish Berliner and writer, recalledGermans celebrating Hitlers rise topower as she addressed lawmakers.

She recalled most ordinary Ger-mans indifference to the fate of Jews, who were forced to wear yellow stars.

And when she visited West Ger-manys capital of Bonn aer the war,she recalled that most had simplyerased from their memory the crimesfor which the German state had set upits own machinery of murder.

Deutschkron remembered WestGermanys first postwar chancellor,Konrad Adenauer, saying that mostGermans opposed the Nazis crimesagainst Jews and that many hadhelped Jews to escape. If only thathad been the truth, she said.

T between central banksthat we noted yesterday continuesto worsen. Tis time it was China andthe EU, not just Germany, that firedwarning shotsat the U.S. Fed.

[Reuters reports:] A senior Chineseofficial said on Friday that the UnitedStates should cut back on printingmoney to stimulate its economy if theworld is to have confidence in the dollar.

Asked whether he was worriedabout the dollar, the chairman of Chi-nas sovereign wealth fund, the ChinaInvestment Corporation, Jin Liqun, told the World Economic Forum inDavos: I am a little bit worried.

Tere will be no winners in cur-

rency wars. But it is important for acentral bank that the money goes tothe right place, Li said.

Speaking at the same session,French Finance Minister PierreMoscovici voiced concern that theeuro was becoming overvalued asa result of quantitative easing andother stimulus actions taken by othernations central banks. Certainly, thelevel of the euro is high and createssome problem, he said, attributing thesingle currencys recent gains partly to

the return of confidence created by theEuropean Central Bank and eurozonegovernments in starting to overcomeEuropes debt crisis.

So first Germany begins pulling itsgold reserves from the U.S., and nowChina and the EU are saying publiclythat the Feds policies are damagingconfidence in the U.S. dollar.

Tis does not bode well for thefinancial system. Te primary roleof central banks is to maintain

confidence in the system. If the centralbanks begin to turn on one anotherit is only a matter of time before thesystem breaks down.

Remember, every time the Fed de-bases the U.S. dollar it forces the euroand other currencies higher, hurtingthose countries exports. Te Fed hasrecently announced it will be printing billion every month until employ-

ment reaches . percent. How long will the other central

banks tolerate this before they initiatea currency war? Both Germany andChina have fired warning shots at theFed. And we all know that just be-neath the veneer of goodwill, tensionsare building between the primaryplayers of the global financial system.

J new prime ministerhas avoided any mention of Chinain his first major policy speech, aerhis coalition partners peace missionto Beijing at the weekend appeared tomake some progress.

Shinzo Abe also avoided men-tioning the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islandsdisputebetween the two countries by

name, but did make a broad referenceto a severe security situation and theneed to protect isolated territories.

Abe came to power banging thenationalist drum against China andeven vowing to station governmentworkers on the disputed islands in theSouth China Sea that have become adangerous flashpoint for a potentialSino-Japanese conflict.

But in yesterdays speech he contin-ued to tone down the hostility towards

Beijing, an approach he has adoptedsince assuming office late last month.

Relations between Japan and Chinahave slumped to their lowest since tieswere normalized. Te row betweenthe two countries has hurt the Japa-nese economy, and business leaders arepressuring Abe to resolve it, but Chinais pressing hard to erode Japans ad-ministrative control of the islands .

Abes speech focused heavily on eco-nomic issues and he promised to reviveJapans stagnant economy through adrastic economic package.

A territorial dispute between China and Japan inten-sifies, Beijing is behaving toward the United States ina way that initially appears counterintuitive: It is issuingstatements designed to provoke increasedU.S. involvement.

Why would China want to draw the U.S.the worlds fore-most military powerinto the conflict?

Tere is a clear explanation. As Japans longtime ally, the U.S. is obliged to defend

okyo. Washington recognizes Japanese administrativecontrol of the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, and has acknowl-edged that they fa ll under Americas defense agreementswith Japan. Te U.S. hopes its pledge to militarily backokyo will frighten Chinapreventing Beijing from takingmore aggressive action in the dispute.

But does Americas pledge intimidate China? In his second inaugural address on January , President

    Obama mentioned peace in our

time, a phrase made infamousby former British Prime Minis-ter Neville Chamberlain as hepromised that the world wouldhave peace with Adolf Hitlerbefore World War . Te phraseencapsulates the naive nature ofMr. Obamas foreign affairs.

He pulled the U.S. out ofIraq in his first term, and hasmapped out a plan to follow suitin Afghanistan during his second. His decision to nomi-

nate Chuck Hagel as defense secretary screams anti-inter-ventionist as loudly as anything could.

Te president wants to be known as the president whobrought the boys home, so the idea of being drawn intoa conflict with China is nearly too unbearable for himto contemplate. Understanding of this reality has fueled

Chinas provocative rhetoric toward Washington.Beijing views the outcome of any potential confrontation

a question of willmore than of military might. On this front, the U.S. is at an overwhelming disadvantage, so Beijingcould use the conflict as an opportunity to expose Americaas an unreliable ally to Japan, which would show the worldthat the U.S. military is a orce that can be countered.

Te statementconfirms that North Korea is not justdeveloping rocket technology to launchsatellites, as it had claimed in the past. Why the suddenly overt aggressive-ness? China and Japan are locked into

a territorial dispute over some islandsin the East China Sea. American trea-ties with Japan require Washington tosupport okyo in the event of a conflict.Americas Pacific strategy also entailsrallying other Asian nations against thegrowing power of China. China is wellaware of the push by the U.S. to gainmore influence and simultaneouslyslow the rate at which the Chinese

economy and military are domineeringthe East. One of the tools China uses topush back at America is North Korea.Since Beijing supplies more than twothirds of North Koreas food, and morethan half of its energy, it has great swayover the rogue hermit nation. R the Venezuelan intelligence agency istargeting and spying on the Venezuelan Jewish commu-nity as well as on Venezuelan companies and organizationswith ties to Israel is deeply troubling, asserted the Anti-Defamation League ().

We are deeply troubled by a recent news report allegingthat the Venezuelan Intelligence Service () is spyingon the Venezuelan Jewish community, said NationalDirector Abraham H. Foxman.

Venezuela under the regime of Hugo Chavez has ahistory of harassing the Jewish community in that coun-try, he said. It is chilling to read reports that the received instructions to carry out clandestine surveillanceoperations against members of the Jewish community, asdescribed in detail in documents leaked by the Argentin-ean website,Analisis.

In a country where the government and some of its

followers have publicly accused the Jewish community ofdisloyalty and where the communitys institutions andhouses of worship have been attacked, reports of this kindof surveillance add fuel to an already incendiary atmo-sphere inciting prejudice and hate, said Foxman. For

more than a decade, elements of the Venezuelan govern-ment-run media and the so-called alternative mediaoperated by Chavez government supporters have regularlyengaged in spreading anti-Jewish conspiracy theories andpromoting anti-Semitic stereotypes.

Te League has monitored and issued reports on anti-Semitism in Venezuela in the past several years andcriticized the government of President Hugo Chavezfor promoting anti-Semitism in Venezuela for politicalpurposes.

I is coming.Lets get it right. What counts asgetting it wrong? Te Simpson-Mazzoli Act, signed by Ronald Reagan. It granted amnesty to the then mil-

lion illegal immigrants and promisedborder enforcement.Amnesty came. Enforcement never

did. Reagan was swindled.Americans are a generous people.

Tey dont want million souls livingin fear among them. Tey would will-ingly, indeed overwhelmingly, supportamnestyas long as it is the last. Teydont want another Simpson-Mazzoli,another bait-and-switch that lets inanother million illegal immigrantsand brings us back where we began.

Tere is an obvious solution: en-forcement first. Hence the attractionof the bipartisan Senate deal reachedby the Gang of Eight, led by DemocratChuck Schumer and Republicans JohnMcCain and Marco Rubio. It is said tofeature border enforcement first, thenlegalization.

Not quite. It is true that only aer some

commission deems the border undercontrol do illegal immigrants become

eligible for green cards and, ultimately, citizenship. But this is misleadingbecause on the day the president signsthe reformlong before enforcementeven beginsthe million are imme-diately subject to instant legalization.

It is cleverly called probation-ary legal status. But the adjective ismeaningless. It grants the right to liveand work here openly. Once granted,it will never be revoked. Consider:

Imagine that the border-controlcommission reports at some point thatthe border is not yet secure. Do youthink for a moment that the millionwill have their probationary legal-ization revoked? Tese are people who,in good faith, would have come out ofthe shadows, registered with the fedsand disclosed their domicile and placeof work. Do you think the authori-ties will have them fired, arrested anddeported?

    Inconceivable. Probationary in

this context means, in reality, for-ever. (Unless, of course, you commitsome crime.) It means they can stayand work here freely for the rest oftheir lives.

rue, they must await the enforce-ment trigger before they can apply fora green card. But they already have thefunctional equivalent of a green card.Tey got that on Day One. Tat mat-ters more than anything to those liv-ing here illegally: the right to continue

living here without fear. Forever.Tats the very essence of amnesty.

And all this happens before the firstscintilla of extra enforcement takesplace.

I not surprise people thatAustralian house prices dropped lastyear. What is surprising is how littlethey fell.

Te latest numbers from RP Data

show that house prices across Aus-tralias capital cities fell . percentin . In general, its a slow bleed.Nationwide house prices peaked in Australia in andhave slowly shed value since.

Te good old days of buying a home and simply watch-ing its price increase year aer year are over, says RP Datasenior research analyst Cameron Kusher: Weve neverseen these situations before, and youd really have to goback to the early s to see similar housing market con-ditions to what weve seen over the last few years.

Te big question now is whether or not the slow drip willturn into a gusher.

Tis is a hugely important question for Australians.Houses are no longer just places tolive. For many Australians, it is thesingle most important investmentthey have. House prices are thebiggest factor influencing house-hold wealth. And for the past twoyears, home ownership has generallycaused families to lose money.

If house prices dont start risingagain, it could destroy the wealth ofa whole generation.

Te latest housing market data showed another weak

month in December. Housing market activity fell for thest month in a row.

Meanwhile, Australias builders are doing everythingthey can to hide falling new house prices and keep peoplebuying. Property Observerreports that builders and devel-

opers are now offering a range of financial incentives anddiscounts to get people in houses. In recent years buildersgave away new cars, offered large cash-backs, free landscap-ing, or to even pay a buyers energy bills for three years.

Now developers are offering even bigger perks like:, visa gi cards, land rebates of up to ,, and afull years worth of paid mortgage payments.

Tese incentives are a sign that Australians have reachedmax house price carrying capacityand that builders aregetting desperate.

Like in the United States, surging home prices werefueled by debt. Since , total mortgage loans have risenfrom A billion to A. trillion. otal household debt

rose from percent of disposable income to a peak of percent today. At the same time, toafford ever escalating house prices, most families have adopted the two-income strategy. Tere is no thirdincome available to push familyborrowing capacityand thus housepriceshigher.

Te housing market in Australiais cut. All that remains to be seen ishow bad the wound is and whether

the slow bleed will turn into a hemorrhage.

A R was the superpower of its day. Yet, whenthe Romans conquered the tiny province of Judea andquashed the First Jewish Revolt in .. , it was actually apretty big deal.

Restoration work was set to begin in December on theiconic Coliseum, Romes first all-stone amphitheater, whichcould seat upwards of , spectators for its gladiatorialbouts, animal hunts and mock naval battles.

Te Coliseum has been so called since at least the eighthcentury .., in reference to a colossal statue of the notori-

ous Emperor Nero that stood nearby. In fact, the originalname of the structure was the Flavian Amphitheater, aerthe emperors of the Flavian dynasty who built it in the latefirst century ..Vespasian, itus and Domitian.

As demonstrated in a article by Louis H. Feldman, ahidden inscription on the Coliseum itself suggests that theconstruction of the amphitheater was financed by the plun-dered booty from the Jewish Revolt. Vespasian faced a seri-ous deficit when he became emperor, but the spoils of warfrom Judeathe riches of the temple treasury, the golden

vessels from the temple, the seized personal treasures of

Jewish citizens and the sale of the Jewish captives them-selvesprovided enormous wealth for the emperor and theplundering army commanded by his son itus. Tus didthe conquest of Judea fund the most recognizable structureof imperial Rome.

Tese same plundered spoils of Judea are depicted prom-inently on another monument that still stands in Rome, which is the focus of exciting new research. A recent project of the Yeshi-va University Center for Israel Studies undertook a new

In the most famous of the panels, Roman soldiers carrythe Jerusalem temple spoils on parade, including the me-norah, the showbread table and trumpets, which were thendeposited in Romes emple of Peace. Te menorah wasalso tested for trace paint colors. Te resulting discovery ofyellow ochre on its arms and base is consistent with biblicaland first-century descriptions of the temples golden meno-rah. MARRYING from page 1

rom being able to embody those ideals(emphasis added throughout).

Every year in America, ,more women than men get bachelorsdegrees. And while the average manstill earns percent more than theaverage woman, guess what? Among

-somethings, womennow have the edge in the wage gap.Men who hold the advantage in education and earningpower are a dying breed.

Te numbers of well-educated, financially self-sufficientwomen are mushrooming beyond the numbers of menwho could be so described. In fact, men are trending in theopposite direction. oday, for example, we see the highestpercentage ever recorded of men of prime working age whoare not even working:about . One fifh o men.Compare that to , when it was one in .

Recent years have seen an explosion of male jobless-ness and a steep decline in mens life prospects that havedisrupted the romantic market in ways that narrow a mar-

riage-minded womans options, wrote Kate Bolick in theAtlantic.[I]ncreasingly, her choice is between deadbeats(whose numbers are rising) and playboys (whose power isgrowing) (November ).

Who will these women marry? Te bar for what they wantout of marriage is climbing, while the field is regressing.

Unsurprisingly, more and more of them, rather thanmarry down, are resigning themselves to the idea thattheir best option is just to skip it.

Sure, theyd love to marry if the right man showed up.Yet, in their viewfrustrating as it may be that Mr. Rightisnt aroundmarriage is, ultimately, unnecessary. I can

take care o myselI dont need a man to support me,thethinking goes. Hed just be another person to take care oanother mouth to eed.

[A]s women have climbed ever higher, men have beenfalling behind, laments Bolick. Weve arrived at the top ofthe staircase, finally ready to start our lives, only to dis-cover a cavernous room at the tail end of a party, most ofthe men gone already, some having never shown upandthose who remain are leering by the cheese table, or are,you know, the ones you dont want to go out with.

Te question is on the lips of women everywhere: Whatswrong with all these guys?

Most people can agree there is a problem, but far fewer

recognize its full scope. When you talk to the women andmeet the men, when you read the stories and look at thedata, you begin to realize: Bolick is not describing a minorirritant, or a disappointment that a few women share. Sheis chronicling the collapse o a social order.

Social historian Stephanie Coontz says were experienc-ing nothing less than a historical revolution every bit aswrenching, far-reaching, and irreversible as the IndustrialRevolution. As she told theAtlantic,When it comes towhat people actually want and expect from marriage andrelationships, and how they organize their sexual and ro-mantic lives, all the old ways have broken down.

If you examine it, this breakdown in all the old waysvirtually all traces back to the trashing of the traditionalroles of men and of women, particularly that of bread-winnerand homemaker.Historically, what largely drovemens march through the milestones to adulthood was theexpectation that they would fulfill the role of provider. Forgenerations, this commonly recognized duty propelledmen into the workforce; it oen served as a prod to mens

ambition and did much to shape society. Even today, it re-mains a strong motivation to any young man who acceptsit. And women recognized their responsibility to make thehome an inviting, nurturing environment for children tobe reared toward adulthood.

For two generations now, esteem for these roles has beenfadingto the point where today they are ignored, if nottreated with contempt.

In dismantling the traditional ways of relating to oneanother as men and women, society lost more than justhuman traditions: We arrogantly, foolishly trashed Godsdesignin creating men and women.

Te failings that have resulted vividly illustrate the wis-

dom in Gods original designfor anyone willing to castaside the blinders of political correctness and look at thesituation honestly.

For the sake of order and harmony, God created mento fulfill one role within the family and within society, and He created women to fill a different and beautifullycomplementary role. Tis is the reality that God createdand revealed to humankind. It is a vital key to individual, family and societal success.

Te reason for marriage is far greater than most peoplerealize. Marriage has an awesome purpose. Doesnt itmake sense to understand its purpose if you plan to marry

someday? o learn this purpose, request our free bookletWhy Marriage! Soon Obsolete? Not only will it help youunderstand marriages purposeit will show you why theold ways will never die.
