TT-UK/TT Ireland Customer’s get VIP ‘Hands on Experience’

F or 4 days in September TT-UK/TT Ireland accompanied 30 of their valued customers and

overseas sales partners to the 10th Annual ‘Hands on Days’ event at Tracto-Technik in Lennestadt, Germany. A really popular part of the visit was a tour of Tracto Technik’s manufacturing facilities where TT-UK/TT Ireland’s visitors were able to see first-hand the equipment being made through all stages of manufacture. As a direct result of the factory tour alone 100% of TT-UK’s visitors said they had gained a better understanding of TT’s products and that it had directly influenced their purchasing decisions and as a result they would be more likely to purchase TT products in the future. After the factory tour, the VIP visitors also had the opportunity to operate the equipment themselves at the purpose built test site adjacent to the plant.

In the evening together with other TT visitors from around the world they enjoyed an evening’s get together and entertainment at the Sauerland Pyramids at Galileo Park the geothermal energy park which is the brainchild of the company’s chairman Wolfgang Schmidt. The pyramids are the basis of an innovative energy concept to utilise geothermal energy for heating and cooling purposes.

The event was held over two weeks in order to incorporate over 700 visitors from all over the world and included informative lectures and presentations on all TT products from GRUNDOMAT moles, GRUNDORAM pipe rams and GRUNDOBURST pipe bursters to keyhole technology, suction excavation, auger boring, GRD geothermal boring and GRUNDODRILL HDD ‘all ground condition’ drilling. These inspiring lectures also covered additional subjects such as different applications, planning and methodology as well as finance options.

Chris Ehlers of Reef Technology South Africa said “We sincerely thank all at TT-UK /TT Ireland and Tracto-Technik for inviting us to the Hands on Days and for their hospitality, friendliness, care and professionalism, we were very well catered for and looked after - A Big Thank You.”

David Toms, Managing Director of TT-UK/TT Ireland added “This is a unique event within the Industry where our valued customers can really get a feel for TT’s high quality products close-up and hands on and is our way of sharing the most up to date product information and technology.” Website: www.tt-uk.com

C J KELLY AND BRAWOLINER CELEBRATE 15 YEARS TOGETHER

D uring the course of 2014 C J Kelly Associates celebrated its 15th year as the only Official Appointed

UK distributor for Brawoliner across the UK and Ireland. Commenting on this historic event for the company John Kelly, senior partner of C J Kelly Associates said: “Working with Brawoliner for the past 15 years has been a long and very effective co-operation for both our companies, which has been proven by the longevity of the arrangement. Our intimate knowledge of Brawoliner systems, how they work, their time- and cost-effectiveness as well as the full range of product applicability enables us to match client needs whatever circumstances may arise.”

In terms of the Brawoliner products available through C J Kelly Associates, potential and existing customers have access to some of the latest state of the art pipeline rehabil-itation systems on the market today including:

Brawoliner® which is a seamless flexible textile liner, specially designed for the rehabilitation of small diameter pipes from 50 to 225 mm, with multiple bends of up to 90°.

Brawoliner 3D® which was developed especially to meet the demands of pipelines with varying dimension changes or situations where several diameter jumps occur over one pipe length. Brawoliner 3D is available for dimensions from DN 100 to DN 225, the seamless textile liner adjusts itself to every pipe diameter during the installation process without operator intervention and ensures a crease free finish to the cured liner.

Brawoliner HT® which meets the increasing demands for pipeline rehabilitation in the domestic situations and inside buildings of various types to minimise disruption and internal damage whilst being able to handle wastewater flows at temperatures greater than 93°C.

Products can also be utilised in vertical liner installations such as vertical rainwater drainage and effluent pipes, as well as horizontal.

Steam generators which enhance the curing process to speed up installation times and minimise access requirements and disruption to the client and general public.

BRAWOLINER® DocuBox 2.0 is a versatile, intuitively operated unit that records all data necessary for liner renovation and presents it on a 7 inch colour screen. This allows potential fault sources to be identified and avoided during the actual installation.

Rehabilitation accessories include liner inversion drums and all other equipment needed to complete a successful lining operation.

Also offered is a full consultancy service for clients and potential clients of Brawoliner.

As well as the Brawoliner connection, C J Kelly Associates also works with MC Building Chemicals which is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of resins for sewer pipe rehabilitation. The MC range includes ultra-high chemical-resistant epoxy resins for both full length drain liners and part liner repairs.

As well as dealing direct with clients, C J Kelly Associates also has a dealer network including ER Systems, ER Technical Services and Lining Division.

More recently C J Kelly Associates has re-affirmed its established distribution agreement for Härke packers which also offers other convenient products. The company views this business area one that could potentially offer significant expansion in trade. Härke offers a range of packers, pipe stoppers and leak testing equipment including most recently a single packer that is designed to work in both 100 mm (4 in) and 150 mm (6 in) diameter pipes so eliminating the need to buy two packers

to cover those diameters. In February 2014, C J Kelly Associates launched its

brand new website, www.cjkelly.com, which offers full details of the complete line of Brawoliner products, the consultancy and advice services currently offered by the company and the Härke packer range. In addition to this the website also has a webstore where the Härke packers can be purchased online with the minimum of fuss. Website: www.cjkelly.com

LANES PROTECTS LISTED TOWN HALL WITH ROOF PIPE RELINE

L anes Group engineers have used no dig technology to help protect Llanelli's grade II listed town hall after leaks in the

roof and a drainage pipe caused serious damage inside the 120-year-old building.

A team from the Lanes depot in Cardiff surveyed roof down-pipes, and relined one of them after it was found to be cracked, allowing water to get into the building.

Lanes Group claims to be the largest independent supplier of wastewater, utility and underground pipeline services in the UK, and a leader in the use of no dig (trenchless) pipe relining technol-ogy.

These techniques are most commonly used to reduce cost, dis-ruption and downtime when renovating underground sewer sys-tems. However, Lanes is increasingly called on to use the tech-nique on buildings like Llanelli Town Hall.

Other examples include installing patch liners to seal leaking 100 downpipes in a business centre in north east England, and the relining of rubbish chutes in high-rise blocks of flats.

The imposing Victorian town hall, built between 1892 and 1896, is used for council offices, public meetings, and to hold civic weddings.

Lanes was commissioned by Carmarthenshire County Council to carry out CCTV surveys on 17 clay downpipes that run down stone shafts within the building’s walls. They were thought to have caused serious damp.

A camera on the end of a flexible rod was used to record HD quality video footage along the whole length of each of the vertical pipes, which take rain water from the roof to underground drains.

The surveys found one pipe had a large spiral crack, which had allowed water to leak into the building, causing damage to a lath and plaster ceiling in one of two main staircases.

Working for Llanelli-based construction firm Lloyd and Gravell, the Lanes team installed an 11 m liner inside the 100 mm diameter pipe, making it structurally sound and waterproof once more.

The repair allowed other specialist contractors to start to work on the internal damage, confident that no more leaks would occur.

Lloyd and Gravell Director Kevin Gravell said: “The Lanes team did an excellent job. They worked very well together with our craft professionals, and completed the job perfectly, and on time. Without their input, the repairs could not have begun.”

Lanes Area Development Manager Damian Tranter said: “The liner was made from felt and impregnated with resin. It was blown down the pipe with compressed air, then left to cure. This creates a tough and smooth new internal pipe wall, which prevents leaks and reduces the risk of blockages.”

The full extent of the damage was discovered during work carried out as part of the council’s planned maintenance and repair programme. Reinstatement works already announced include the replacements of window lintels and deco-rative mouldings, and extensive redecora-tion to match the original and existing surroundings.

The repairs, due to be completed by spring 2015, must be carried out with traditional craft techniques used when the town hall was built. Website: www.lanesfordrains.co.uk

KIER TAKES QUICK STEPS TO HELP IMPROVE SWW CUSTOMER RELATIONS

S outh West Water recently presented Kier with a water service pipe leak that was causing

major problems due to its location. The leak was somewhere on a 25 m section of the service which went down the middle of a much used path and under a set of concrete steps.

A leakage detection team located the leak under the steps and to do this work Kier allowed 2½ days for a gang to break open the steps and repair the leak and 2 days reinstatement some 4½ days in total requiring a 5 day closure of the path.

As an alternative Nigel Burns put one of his two specialist KOBUS Pipe Pulling teams on the job to pull out the old pipe and replace the entire line.

Gary Packer and his brother Lee did the work and said: “It was a nightmare job when we first looked at it needing us to break the concrete to find the leak, so to put the KOBUS on it was the ideal solution.”

On site, once two small access pits had been dug, the team used the KOBUS Pipe Puller to pull out 25 m of 25 mm (1 in) diameter black poly pipe and pull in a new 32 mm PE pipe in under 5½ minutes. They were in and out in under a day.

Nigel added: “These are the kind of lengths that we can pull with the KOBUS. This would have been a five day job but instead we were finished it in just a day without any need to close the footpath, which was great as is was a cut through on a housing estate.”

Kier now operates two KOBUS Pipe Pullers based out of Plymouth and Exeter and is looking to add to its fleet based on the continued success and cost savings currently being made. However, in an area where Customer Satisfaction is priority South West Water has been delighted with the response from the public at the lack of disruption previously time consuming and disruptive jobs like this would have taken. VIRGINIA UTILITY COMPANY DISCOVERS GPR BENEFITS

A ccurately locating and marking buried utilities is the first step in

preventing accidental damage to underground infrastructure, and the basic tool for making such locates is the electro-magnetic locator, a dual-component system of compact electrical transmitter and handheld receiver.

However, electromagnetic equipment cannot locate plastic or composite pipes unless they have tracer wires to carry current generated by the locator’s transmitter, and there are thousands of miles of pipe in the U.S. that cannot be located with conventional electromagnetic locators.

A solution in many situations is a locator employing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology. GPR locators transmit high-frequency radio waves into the ground. When a wave hits a buried object or a boundary with different dielectric constants, the instrument records variations in the reflected return signal which are processed and displayed to the operator on a screen, identifying the location of the pipe as well as other buried objects such as concrete, storage tanks, and conditions such as voids. GPR performance varies with soil conditions.

“The Chesterfield County (State of Virginia, USA) Utility Department uses its own personnel to make an average of 1,000 utility locates per week.” said Keith Shelton, utility supervisor. Most are in response to One-Call requests, but some are to assist department crews.

“We depend on electromagnetic locators most of the time.” said Shelton. “But there often are situations when they are not effective, and we regularly use GPR to make locates. Mapping of our systems is excellent, but our infrastructure contains composite plastic pipes with no tracing wires, and we use GPR technology to locate them.”

The GPR equipment operated by the county is a Ditch Witch 2450GR model mounted on a four-wheel cart which is pushed across the survey route surface by the operator, similar to a lawn mower. Its earth-engaged antenna makes direct contact with the terrain, maximising signal strength. The dual-frequency antenna simultaneously sweeps in two frequencies, allowing the operator to see both deep and shallow objects. The cart design allows the operator to quickly scan uneven terrain as well as level surfaces. The display provides clear, easy-to-read images.

“The 2450GR has been a ‘godsend.’” Shelton said. “It has more than paid for itself in time savings by its ability to quickly make locates in conditions where other equipment is not effective. We could tell story after story about how it has found lines other equipment could not.”

Most important, Shelton emphasised, is how easy the 2450GR is to use. “Just take it out of the box, turn it on, and you are ready to go.” he said. “It calibrates itself and operation is very intuitive. Being so easy to use makes it easy to instruct others in its operation. I told our dealer, if you ever need someone to demonstrate one, I am your man. I swear by this product.”

Chesterfield County is served by Ditch Witch of Virginia. Ditch Witch of Virginia has locations in Glen Allen, Virginia and Chesapeake, Virginia. They serve Central Virginia, Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland.

“If we need anything, all we need to do is pick up the phone.” said Shelton. “They are always available for whenever we have a need and do a good job staying in touch.” Website: www.ditchwitch.com

CCTV REPORTING TRAINING AIDS NORTHUMBRIAN WATER RESPONSE TEAMS

N orthumbrian Water (NW), like all water companies, has to be able to handle and respond to a variety of different

circumstances and customer related incidents during the course of its operations. Following various sewer flooding incidents within its region NW is delivering a project to improve its customer service by streamlining the management and investigation processes surrounding such occurrences.

Whilst on-going works and scheduled maintenance operations continue to be undertaken by out-sourced contractors, NW is in the process of streamlining its reactive operations by ensuring that its own in-house response teams do not just have the capability to clear blockages and cleanse sewers but also have the added ability to carry out CCTV surveys and create industry standard structural and service condition reports.

To achieve this aim, NW has purchased CCTV equipment for its Operational response team, and is currently putting the team through a series of CCTV inspection and reporting training courses, in association with Develop Training and WinCan (www.wincan.com). WinCan is the provider of what is generally recognised as the ‘industry standard’ inspection reporting software, to ensure that all incident investigations provide not just the customer service expected of NW but also the maximum information about any particular site. This information supports NW in providing excellent customer service and it can also be added to the company’s asset management database for OFWAT reporting, future reference and operational planning.

In total the training programme will provide NW with 21 response teams fully trained to the OS19x/WinCan level required within the company. Each team will then have the full capability to carry out all sewer maintenance tasks and CCTV surveying, utilising both push rod and crawler cameras. NW’s existing 15 reactive sewerage maintenance teams will operate the CCTV equipment. However, due to the increased workload arising from the project, NW will also need to recruit a further six teams. On the present training programme NW is undertaking 5 courses with between 8 and 10 attendees per course.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TRAINING To ensure that the right training was provided for such an important part of NW’s customer facing operations, the company had to select the best training provider. Develop, NW’s training partner for this project, was approached very early on in the programme development process. To test the course applicability NW and Develop ran an initial OS19x training course with volunteer candidates from the water company maintenance teams whilst piloting its new flooding initiative.

Tony King of Develop worked closely with Peter Rollins, NW’s project manager, to support the candidates, who came with a mix of experience and abilities, and initially found the course quite daunting. However with the right support and high training quality the outcome was excellent with a very good pass rate. Develop’s course flexibility and the advice received, particularly from Tony King, proved invaluable to the attendees.

In terms of training for the reporting side of the work, NW already had a relationship with WinCan as the company had purchased a single licence previously. Having the availability of the reporting software developer on hand throughout the pilot training course proved a great advantage, along with the advice offered by Paul Woodhouse of WinCan.

As the project has progressed further, NW went through a tendered procurement process to purchase CCTV equipment and reporting software, with WinCan eventually being the software of choice. This decision was influenced by NW’s desire to implement the new process swiftly and also have the teams trained to the latest standards without too much of an impact on the day to day operation of the busy sewer network teams. Paul Woodhouse from Wincan has worked closely with Develop to prepare a course plan to provide a combined training course that could be offered to all NW sewer maintenance teams. This gave the company both the confidence and support required to ensure its teams achieved the very best results for not only the business but for its customers too.

Training underway at Northumbrian Water with the company’s response teams.

Practical use of the WinCan reporting system brings trainees up to speed with changes that will be required in new Standards proposed for 2015.

Paul Woodhouse, said: “Develop and WinCan have for some years been looking at the best way to combine the operator course and reporting course together in this way. Until recently there has been little incentive to do this because of how the course examination has been designed. However with the proposed changes to the standards coming into force in 2015 in the new 5th Edition of the Sewerage Manual, which have an emphasis on testing using electronic formats with the software that will be used in the field, we felt now was a good time to make the change on the courses.”

Tony King from Develop added: “We now see ourselves as having a course structure that will be exactly what the CCTV community needs and that can be adapted as necessary to individual needs. This will be in an electronic format that will meet all the new criteria across the indus-try, from the work carried out by UK water companies to those in the private sector that may be looking to do work of this nature.” As mentioned earlier this project initiative was customer service driven rather than simply being an efficiency project.

Peter Rollins said of the project: “This project has been an investment in our people as it empowers our maintenance teams, giving them the tools to carry out the job right, first time, every time, and is a real morale boost to staff as a result. This project does not affect any other NW requirements for CCTV surveying, as it is purely focussed on reactive flooding investigations.”

Peter went on to say: “Being fairly new to CCTV with only a few years knowledge, even though I have 26 years of experience in maintenance of sewer networks, it seemed a logical step for me to coordinate OS19x with WinCan as they work hand in hand. The course starts on a Monday with WinCan, followed by Develop for the rest of the week, with (hopefully) success on Friday! Having high quality operational trainers and the support of the software developer on site during the course, I think really made a difference to how effective the training has been.”

Paul Woodhouse continued: “This is the first time such a combined course has been utilised with an electronic training and testing format and it is seen as a test scheme within the industry to see how it meets the proposed changes in standards. With the programme of NW courses now about to be completed it has proved that it could be an invaluable asset to all those that operate in areas where pipeline inspection is a ‘must do’ on a daily basis. We see this type of course as something that most if not all the UK water companies will be looking towards in the very near future. On that note it should perhaps also be highlighted that we can tailor the course to fit any particular requirements from individual companies including combined training at client sites or indeed at out dedicated training facility in Woking.” Website: www.wincan.com

BLUETOOTH 4.0 HELPS KEEP CONSTRUCTION SITES ON TRACK

K nowing exactly where valuable tools and equipment are in ‘real time’ can be key

to a successful construction project, as can protecting employees in an industry where danger is ever present.

RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology has been widely used for tracking tools, equipment, materials and there are numerous GPS tracking systems available to track the location of vehicles.

However, the advent of a new technology, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Bluetooth 4.0, has emerged and has much wider uses to improve the ability of construction businesses to keep track of a much wider variety of assets even down to individual tools and log and monitor activities on site and to improve health and safety.

GPS does not work indoors or underground and RFID offers limited range communication, whereas BLE is easily deployable in a wider range of locations and is a lot more flexible when it comes to converging technology, making it a more ‘Future Proof’ investment.

BLE has the capability to track and monitor workers and assets more accurately, with the added functionality of being able to integrate into legacy back end systems to send audio and content to connected mobile devices. Adopted by IOS, Android and Windows operating systems, its low power and cost, as well as its robust and reliable communication means BLE is quickly becoming the technology of choice.

One such company, Iknaia, London, UK, has built a completely robust end to end solution combing BLE and Wi-Fi. Iknaia’s beacons present their location to their detectors in ‘real-time’. In addition the detectors can connect to mobile devices and send content specific to that device based on its proximity.

Julia McNally, Founder explains: “One of the difficult issues facing organisations planning to deploy new technologies is how they can all integrate and become completely interoperable with any existing and future technology. Our installation covers a wide range of solutions including full Wi-Fi mesh connectivity, offering public/corporate channels; Beacon scanning and detecting; integration with back end systems to push relevant content to connecting mobile devices.”

Iknaia’s data is pushed into the cloud and presented on an easy to use online management console, optimised for all devices; PC, tablets and Smartphones.

With Apple and Google adopting beacon technology and developing applications using BLE, it can be expected that industry will see a lot more uses for this technology in years to come. Website: www.iknaiatracking.com

The Deadline Date for Award entries is the 27 February 2015 UKSTT PROMOTE INNOVATION AND THE ENVIRONMENT At the first National Joint Utilities Group (NJUG) Innovation and Sustainability Conference Peter Crouch, UKSTT Technical

Secretary, was invited to present to delegates on the environmental benefits of trenchless methods and systems. Whilst illustrating several examples of carbon reduction, using the NASTT web-based spreadsheet as well as some examples from the work by WRc, Peter took the opportunity to highlight a few of the impressive systems and innovations he noticed at No-Dig Live in Sep-tember this year. These included the award winning Cat Surveys high speed GPR scanning system and Infotec’s ‘PipeTrack3D’,

as well as OnSite’s Panoramo 3D high speed Manhole inspection system. The conference, hosted by Bentley Systems, produced a good turnout and an impressive range of speakers ensured that the inaugural conference was a success. Bob Gallienne, NJUG’s CEO, illustrated the challenges faced by the sector and articulated NJUG’s focus on innovation and coordination. Earlier in the month Peter attended the HAUC(UK) Conference on Tuesday 30 September at The Brighton Centre. The theme of the conference - ‘Think Outside the Whole’ – was developed to promote discussion on the belief that the street works community must go beyond the status quo and ensure greater collaboration and innovation. The conference was well attended and it was clear from many speeches that the sector faces huge pressures in the future – in terms of projected rises in population and traffic and the need for major infrastructure and housing programmes – that collaboration and innovation must be at the heart of the sector’s forward-looking strategy. Indeed, this was a key part of the Roads Minister Robert Goodwill’s keynote address, where he stated that the Government’s immediate priority was

to minimise disruption.

WARWICK LECTURE DAY REAPS PRAISE The first full pipeline design day, part of the UKSTT Outreach lecture programme delivered to Universities

throughout the UK, proved very popular with students at Warwick. Starting bright and early for most students, with a 9.00am start, the day covered many aspects of pipeline

design and installation including material selection, structural design, health and safety, and connectivity. Interspersed with animations, films, and group working, the day is designed to encourage debate and increase student’s awareness of some of the many other aspects of pipeline engineering that they needed to appreciate.

Over sixty 3rd year civil engineering undergraduates actively engaged the speakers in debate as well as extensive question and answer. Whilst parts of the day were tough for one of the first days back at university it went well with everyone appreciating the efforts the lecture team had made to engage and inform.

Many thanks must go to Adrian Davies–Jordan (MWH) and Julia Trew (British Plastics Group) for the excellent day they created. Dr. Tony Price (Head of Engineering at Warwick), who co-ordinated the day, shared student feedback with Peter Crouch (UKSTT Technical Secretary) including an email from one particular student saying:

‘………..I personally found the day extremely useful and the sessions have inspired me to look at certain real-world problems from different perspectives. ……… Overall, my experience today has been very positive and I have gained awareness into the installation and replacement of pipes, sewers and cables. ………we have all enjoyed the presentations, workshop sessions and the break-out sessions. ….please convey my sincere thanks to the three speakers who have very kindly come today to deliver an insightful day. ……. I hope that students in future years will continue to benefit from attending similar induction sessions.’

UKSTT MEMBERS NEWS MURPHY WINS SILVER IN 2014 ROSPA OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY AWARDS J. Murphy & Sons Limited won a Silver Award at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents

(RoSPA) Occupational Health and Safety Awards for its continued commitment to health and safety as a core value. The RoSPA Awards, which date back 58 years, recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work. Judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

RoSPA awards manager David Rawlins said: “Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as J. Murphy & Sons Limited, contribute to a collective raising of the bar for other organisations to aspire to, and we offer them our congratulations.”

The company has achieved this award for its continued commitment to health and safety as a core value, its strong leadership in aiming for a generative culture, and its engagement with employees, clients and suppliers in the drive to achieve never harm. By recognising the link between systems and people and placing safety at the core of the business, Murphy has achieved sustained and measurable improvements in safety performance and enhanced business efficiency.

The Murphy Never Harm Culture Programme goes further than reliance on HSQE systems to achieve a safer and more productive workplace. Since 2012, the company has seen more than 5,800 employees, supply chain partners, and clients take part in a Never Harm Hub Day. The Never Harm Culture Programme has also driven improvement in health and safety performance at Murphy with AFR decreasing from 0.24 in 2008 to 0.08 in 2013.

Murphy Head of HSQE Jackie Brennan said: “The RoSPA awards are an excellent vehicle in rewarding success and providing a benchmark for our health and safety performance, and we are delighted to receive our award in recognition of our achievements. We have invested significantly in our employees and supply chain to encourage better choices in achieving a never harm culture in everything we do. The approach has seen Murphy achieve industry-leading performance in health & safety, continuous grassroots innovation in health & safety, as well as commitment to furthering health & safety in the wider industry. As our Never Harm Culture Programme embarks on the next phase of what our clients have called a ‘world class programme’, we look forward to continuing to maintain excellence and keeping everyone safe.”

RoSPA’s awards are presented in more than 20 industry sectors, and also recognise excellence in specialist areas, such as the management of occupational road risk (MORR).

Furthermore, J. Murphy & Sons Limited received praise and an award at this year’s International Pipeline and Offshore Contractors Association (IPLOCA) Health & Safety Awards for its outstanding Never Harm Culture Programme and continued commitment to health and safety.

Designed, developed and delivered in-house, the Never Harm Culture Programme goes beyond traditional approaches, such as cautioning or policing behaviours, and instead focuses on the subconscious and conscious processes which form the choices and subsequent attitudes that shape people’s behaviours. By recognising the link between choices, systems and people and placing safety at the core of the business, Murphy has achieved sustained and measurable improvements in safety performance and enhanced business efficiency.

The judges of IPLOCA’s Health & Safety Award recognised the Programme as a well-defined initiative, which enhances safety and one which seeks to continuously improve and adapt through lessons learnt and best practice implementation. Murphy was a runner up in this category.

Yvonne Bennett, Head of Never Harm Culture Programme, commented: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this prestigious recognition from IPLOCA for our Never Harm Culture Programme. Our industry still suffers fatalities and serious incidents every year, despite having great HSQE systems and procedures. That is why we are doing more and going beyond traditional ‘observational measurement’ approaches. Our Never Harm Culture Programme is about creating compelling reasons why people should choose to follow those HSQE systems – making them a part of everyday life here at Murphy for every single one of us.”

Andy Ball, Managing Director of Murphy subsidiary Land & Marine, received the award on behalf of the company. Andy, who was recently appointed to the IPLOCA Board to represent Europe North West, added: “IPLOCA puts great emphasis on health,

Crossrail’s contractors BFK and Barhale opened a competition for primary school students at Canada Blanch School in west London to name the tunnelling machine. It is part of BFK’s Community Investment Programme which is seeking to leave a lasting legacy in the communities Crossrail constructors work within.

BFK Project Director Graham Hughes said: “This is an exciting project for the local community and a chance to bring engineering to life for young students in the local area. We opened a drawing competition to year 3 and 4 students and selected a winning entry and TBM name. The students joined us for the launch and we hope seeing an engineering project in action will inspire a new generation of future tunnellers and engineers.”

Molley is too small to accommodate workers so is controlled remotely from the surface. Works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
