U.S. PATENT FOR ePIPE®

P ipe Restoration Technologies, LLC, (PRT), a world-leading pipe lining innovator and manufacturer,

recently announced that it has been awarded its 14th U.S. patent, Patent #9273815, entitled, ‘Process for Coating the Interior Surface of Water Service lines.’ Granted by the USPTO, this patent covers the in-place coating of metallic pipes, including lead, copper and steel pipes, curing the resin in at least one hour. ePIPE in-place lining technology reduces lead leaching from lead pipes and other in-line lead contributors, such as lead solder from leaching into the drinking water supply. Using the ePIPE process, lead levels are reduced to well below the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) cut-off guidelines for lead, at 10 ug/l (10ppb). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cut-off levels for lead, at 15 ug/l (15ppb), are 50% higher than recommended by the World Health Organisation.

The ePIPE technology is completed to pipes ‘in-place’, reducing the need for excessive digging or tearing up roads or buildings’ foundation or walls. ePIPE is a long-term solution that does not require the addition of expensive and questionable water treatment chemicals.

“Relying on chemical treatment of the drinking water and getting it wrong was a major contributor to the Flint poison pipe problem.” Pipe Restoration Technologies and ACE DuraFlo® CEO Larry Gillanders said. “Hands down, we offer the best solution to protect drinking water from lead leaching.”

ePIPE technology claims to be the industry’s fastest and most effective in-place pipe lining process preventing leaks and greatly reducing lead and metals from leaching into the drinking water supply.

The Flint, MI, water crisis has brought major attention to the cumulative effects of lead consumption, especially in pregnant women and small children. Lead is a dangerous toxin, poisoning drinking water, with medical experts agreeing there is no amount of lead deemed safe for consumption. Lead exposure can impair a child’s IQ and cognitive function and can lead to behavioral problems. High-profile environmental activists, such as Erin Brockovich and Former First Lady of the United States, Hillary Clinton, are getting involved in raising awareness and attempting to find a solution.

“We are already providing our ePIPE technology as a solution to lead leaching in the UK and we have already provided the ePIPE solution to thousands of properties in the U.S..” said Gillanders. “We are prepared to help cities like Flint to bring their water pipes into lead leaching compliance, using this efficient, effective and proven solution. With our licensed network of plumbing companies across the country that use ePIPE, we are asking all cities and building owners who are dealing with lead compliance issues to contact us so that we can protect their drinking water. Our non-invasive epoxy coating system can bring lead contaminated water systems into compliance within hours, without causing destruction or closing down streets. This is a win-win for cities and their citizens.

Lead service pipes are not the only contributor to lead in drinking water. Lead solder, which was used on copper piping systems is a lead contributor and as seen recently in the Hong Kong Lead Crisis, can elevate lead levels from 10 to 60 times the allowable limit. Prior to 1988, lead solder was a commonly installed material used with the installation of copper piping systems in the U.S. and Canada. Website: www.epipeinfo.com

NASTT AWARD FOR HAMMERHEAD® SAME PATH™

T he North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT)

has chosen HammerHead Trenchless Equipment’s Same Path™ gas line slitting technology for recognition as an industry-leading innovation in 2016. Each year NASTT judges choose just two products contributing to the advancement of trenchless solutions to receive its Abbott Innovative Product Award. Judging and presentation takes place during the annual NASTT No-Dig Show, held this year in Dallas, Texas, between 20 and 24 March.

HammerHead Same Path Gas Line Slitting Technology is a tooling system for replacing natural gas distribution pipe that cannot be replaced by traditional bursting methods. The tooling is designed for use with the HammerHead line of cable winches.

HammerHead Trenchless Equipment, a Charles Machine Works company, originally designed the tooling at the request of Ditch Witch in California. Mike Anderson, Ditch Witch Bay Area, Central & Southern California president, and two in-house HammerHead equipment specialists, Kevin Campbell and Cameron Zoucha, had identified a need for better gas line slitting technology. HammerHead engineering worked with them to develop the tooling and methodology successfully used in the field by the Ditch Witch group in California since its introduction.

Anderson said: “We needed to help a customer frustrated by existing tooling that tended to either bunch up the pipe or high-centre and get stuck. We turned to HammerHead engineering, which has a history of developing solutions for unique problems.”

HammerHead Same Path tooling is designed to overcome those issues while simultaneously splitting old pipe and installing new pipe.

“Usually you expect tool design to come as a result of trial and error.” Anderson said. “In this case it was trial and success, an effective product within weeks of our initial request that surpasses any gas line slitting system I have seen to date.”

HammerHead Same Path Gas Line Slitting Technology is designed for

replacing ½ in to 4 in (13 mm to 100 mm) diameter natural gas distribution pipe and may also be used to decommission inactive gas pipelines that will be left in the ground. The unique slitting process follows the existing pipe path, reducing the likelihood of contact with other utilities.

Same Path tool string components include expanders, connectors, and slitting tools with replaceable hardened-steel blades, breakaways and beacon housings. Used in conjunction with the HammerHead line of cable winches and Subsite® electronics, the tooling’s string design permits virtually trouble-free pullback in PVC, HDPE, MDPE and Aldyl-A pipe and limits torque on new MDPE or HDPE replacement pipe to within approved manufacturer’s standards. AQUAM INNOVATION DAY HIGHLIGHTS LEAKAGE BEST PRACTICE

S ome of the latest technology available in the battle against

leakage was on display at an Innovation Day held at the UK headquarters of Aquam.

Representatives of utilities, along with contractors and consultants, were given demonstrations of advanced systems to detect, repair and provide emergency supply in case of bursts and leaks.

Among the technology demonstrated at the Innovation Day was the Leak Detection System (LDS) 1000, a non-disruptive system of assessing the condition of pipelines available from JD7, part of the Aquam group of companies. The LDS 1000 uses sensors which can detect the precise location of leaks without the need to carry out expensive excavations and interrupt customers’ water supply.

STABLE HOUSEHOLD COVER Aquam’s Overland Supply Vehicle (OSV), shortlisted in this year’s Water Industry Achievement Awards’ category for ‘most innovative technology’, was also onsite. The OSV can quickly provide stable cover to up to 24 homes that have lost water supply in emergency or during planned maintenance works.

At the heart of the new temporary supply service is the Overland Supply Manifold, the first purpose-build device for multiple household connections in emergency and temporary disruptions.

LEAD PIPELINING Industry representatives were also given a demonstration of Aquam’s advanced pipelining systems for small-diameter pipes – Serline and Nu Flow.

This suite of no-dig technologies can be used on drinking water and wastewater pipes at much lower cost than pipe replacement.

Developed in the UK by HTC, part of the Aquam group, the Serline blown-in epoxy pipelining system has full DWI-approval for use on potable water networks and is ideal for use on small-diameter lead service pipes.

The first stage of installation involves cleaning the pipe using HTC’s Whirlwind technology to remove corrosive deposits; this is followed by coating the pipe’s interior length with the blown-in epoxy liner.

Recently arrived in the UK, Nu Flow’s suite of pipelining technologies for clean water and wastewater networks was originally developed for use on US Navy aircraft carriers. The Nu Line epoxy system and Nu Drain structured liner can repair even the most badly corroded pipework. Both systems have an expected lifespan of 80 years.

UK AVAILABILITY The technologies are all available in the UK from Aquam, a global company with offices in Manchester, Ireland and the US.

Richard Coffey, Managing Director of Aquam Corp said: “I am delighted at the high level of interest in our technologies that the engineers and network operators attending our open day have shown. As UK water companies move into AMP6, it is more important than ever to find the best ways of preventing, detecting and repairing leaking pipes.”

Richard went on to say: “As well as meeting leak management targets, utilities are also expected to improve customer satisfaction, which our technologies are well placed to assist with. Water industry professionals are not always aware of the potential of the advanced technologies in meeting these targets, so Aquam plans to hold more industry open days to help the industry keep up-to-date with the products and services available.”

Senior representatives of United Utilities, Murphy’s and Amey were among those who attended the open day held on April 12, at Kingsley Hall in Manchester.

Further events are planned in Manchester and Derby later in the year. Website: www.aquamcorp.com

RETIREMENT MEANS CHANGES TT-UK

T T-UK of Bedford was started in 1982 by David Toms following a meeting with Paul Schmidt the very talented

German design engineer and founder of TRACTO–TECHNIK GmbH in Germany. Paul Schmidt started from humble beginnings in the early 1960’s working in his garage where he initially designed and manufactured pulling and piling equipment. In the early 1970’s he saw the need for designing drilling technologies for trenchless pipe installations and created the original and world renowned GRUNDOMAT mole.

David saw the potential for this technology in the UK market and with the conception of TT-UK came a large sales territory which included the UK, Ireland, South East Asia, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and other ex-Commonwealth countries. Since 1998 Australia and New Zealand have been part of TT-Asia Pacific’s sales territory, where David’s son now works after emigrating there with his family a few years ago.

As well as his son Daniel, David’s partner Linda worked for the company and retired after 28 years in October 2013, she finally persuaded David to join her in March this year.

Operations Director for TT-UK Nigel Gardener said: “In total I have worked with David for the last 40 years and David’s legacy is to leave a strong foundation for us to continue, everyone at TT-UK would like to wish David a very long and happy retirement.”

David’s successor is Roger Wahl who joined TT-UK as Managing Director at the beginning of April 2016.

For the last eight months Roger has worked as After Sales Manager at TRACTO-TECHNIK in Germany. Attending Derby University he gained an MBA and a BEng (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering at Middlesex University. A consummate professional of the Construction Equipment World, Roger has spent his working life in Construction in one form or another, including 12 years from 1995 to 2007 with JCB progressing through numerous managerial positions in various sales, service and marketing roles.

PIPE JACKING ASSOCIATION MOBILE FRIENDLY WEBSITE GOES LIVE

T he Pipe Jacking Association (PJA) has gone live with a mobile friendly website

that now includes case studies of pipe jacking projects to aid utilities and designers when considering pipe jacking or microtunnelling installations. Content also includes details of PJA members, access to publications, animations and presentations, extensive university research and a link to its carbon calculator.

New content added to include case studies showing carbon savings up to 75% when comparing non-disruptive sewer installation with open cut construction techniques

The case studies cover a wide range of projects including: urban main drainage and flood alleviation; road, railway and canal and river crossings, and a range of specialist applications. A feature of many of the case studies, in particular those concerning main drainage and flood alleviation, is that the significant carbon savings achievable through non-disruptive utility installation are detailed on the case studies where appropriate.

Of the urban main drainage and flood alleviation schemes an average carbon saving of over 50% is achieved when comparing pipe jacking and microtunnelling to disruptive open cut utility installation. In some instances savings of up to 75% were achieved. The source of the carbon saving were verified by www.pipejackingco2calclator.com an online carbon calculator developed by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and verified by the Water Research Centre (WRc).

The case studies are downloadable from the Pipe Jacking Associations website –www.pipejacking.org

THE RAPID WINDOW CUTTER One of the machines that the apprentices will learn to use is Steve Vick’s Rapid Window Cutter which was developed in collaboration with Wales & West Utilities to meet the need for a fast, safe and easy-to-use method of dramatically reducing cutting time on ductile iron pipes during Live Mains Insertion.

Whilst the majority of the existing gas network in the UK is made up of cast iron pipes, there is a significant proportion constructed from ductile iron and steel. These mains pose a problem for utilities when carrying out live and dead mains insertion, as they are not able to be broken out easily like cast iron mains.

The Rapid Window Cutter is probably the fastest on the market, able to cut a window in ten minutes when traditional equipment would take significantly longer. Suitable for use on ductile iron pipes in the diameter range from 100 mm to 200 mm (4 in, 6 in and 8 in), the machine is fitted with depth controls allowing it to be used safely on inserted pipe. It is small and lightweight and the compact design allows the cutter to be used close up to third party equipment.

RAPID ROTARY CUTTER FOR DUCTILE IRON Steve Vick International will also train the apprentices in the use of its Rapid Rotary Cutter, a compact circumferential cutter which is able to cut a 4 in (100 mm) diameter ductile main in around two minutes. The machine is ideal to use during live or dead insertion projects and is supplied with depth control discs to prevent damage to internal PE pipe. A major benefit of the Rapid Rotary Cutter is that it operates without the need for water coolant when cutting ductile iron which is highly convenient and leaves a dry trench.

Crock Harrison, Steve Vick International’s Managing and Technical Director, said: “With these two products - The Rapid Window Cutter and the Rapid Rotary Cutter - as well as other cutting equipment in our range, we believe that Wales & West Utility apprentices will have faster, safer and more efficient ways of cutting gas mains at their fingertips when they begin work replacing the aging metal mains in communities throughout Wales and the South West of England. We are committed to providing training for all our equipment, either on or off site, to help our customers get the best possible advantages from our products.

Wales & West Utilities is undertaking a multi-million-pound 30-year mains replacement programme across Wales and the South West, which began in 2002. Old metal pipes within 30 m of buildings are being replaced with new PE pipes with a lifespan of more than 80 years.

The Rapid Window Cutter and Rapid Rotary Cutter are part of Steve Vick International’s expanding range of pipe handling equipment designed to improve safety, reduce costs and improve efficiency within the utility industry. Website: www.stevevick.co.uk

WELL POSITIONED FOR TRUNK MAINS CLEANSING

S eymour Civil Engineering is well positioned to make further inroads into trunk mains

cleansing as it heads towards the successful completion of a four-year project, carried out on behalf of Northumbrian Water.

Seymour won the tender with Northumbrian Water to carry out maintenance and cleaning of a Victorian trunk main which supplies water to Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and Northumberland and has invested heavily in specialist equipment to facilitate the project.

The company has a long standing relationship with Northumbrian Water and as the project draws to a close in the next 12 months, Seymour is now in a position to carry out similar works having invested almost £500,000 in bespoke equipment to maintain and clean the large diameter pipes.

Kevin Byrne, Managing Director at Seymour, said: “We are very proud of the work that has been carried out on this project, going right back to the day we won the tender. We have had more than 40 staff engaged on the work, and their skills have developed as the project has progressed. It is

more mechanical engineering than civil engineering, carrying out pressure testing, analysing the trunk main and using the sampling points to verify that the main is cleaned to specification.

“We invested heavily in equipment, and we have learned a lot along the way which will stand us in good stead for future projects. The specialism we have developed is transferable to other industries, not just water companies. We can get involved from day one, and the closer we are to the front end of design the more effective we are in delivering the project.”

Mr Byrne is hoping that the Northumbrian Water project will open the floodgates to further specialist work when it comes to cleansing and repairing trunk mains and said that Seymour Civil Engineering can provide a one-stop shop for similar projects.

Seymour is recognised as one of the North East’s leading civil engineering businesses, and employs a workforce in excess of 230 staff.

He added: “Projects like this are huge, and we are faced with lots of complex issues that present themselves. You have to remember that many of these pipes were laid back in Victorian times, some of them are 150 years old. Cities and motorways have been built on top of these piping systems since they were built. We have to isolate sections of the pipe to dewater it without causing too much disruption to the customers. Once we have excavated one section of pipe, we will get it back up and running and move onto the next section. The harmless sediment which has built up on the walls of the pipe will be removed, eliminating the discolouration issue. That iss what makes the water supply discoloured sometimes, so it is essential this work is done.”

Mr Byrne is full of praise for Northumbrian Water’s innovative approach to the work, with hi-tech systems being installed during the project to minimise future disruption.

“It is vital all partners work as a team on things like this.” added Kevin. “Northumbrian Water has been excellent, while we have been doing our job they have completely enhanced the network controllability and they have put a lot of measures in place so the sediment does not build up again in future. The whole system has been upgraded and modernised, and Northumbrian Water has really grasped the nettle and as a result they are leading the field in projects of this nature. Although the customer does not see all of this work going on underground, the minor disruption they have while each section of the pipework is turned off and cleared will ensure they get a first class service for years to come.”

To deliver the programme of works Seymour utilised two techniques to clean the pipes - ice pigging and typhoon jetting.

Mr Byrne said: “Using the ice pigging technique, a section of pipe is isolated by turning off valves at each end of the length of pipe to be cleaned. Some water is emptied out to make room for slushy ice which is injected into the pipe. The upstream valve is then reopened enabling the water to start flowing again. The pressure of water on either side of the slush compacts the ice and it scrapes the sediment off the pipe walls. The dirty ice is then flushed from the water pipe and the water is sampled and put back into supply. We are in an age where we can turn our central heating on from our mobile phones, but this is one of the simplest methods I have ever come across and it is so effective. Using ice is much quicker as we do not have to empty the section of pipe we are cleaning, and refill it, as with other cleaning methods.”

He added: “It usually takes us a week to clean a one-kilometre section of pipe using ‘pressure jetting’, it takes just a few hours to clean the same amount of pipe using ice. As well as being more cost effective and less disruptive for Northumbrian Water customers, the process also uses less water than other types of cleaning so it is more environmentally friendly.”

As well as trunk cleansing, the firm specialises in drainage, urban renewal projects, restoration and development work as well as sea defence and coastal protection work. Website: www.seymourcec.co.uk

HAMMERHEAD INTRODUCES NEW TRACKABLE SIDEWALKER MOLES

M ammoth Equipment Ltd, the main UK and Eire distributor for the Hammerhead range of trenchless equipment recently announced that it is introducing the new 67 mm and 75 mm

diameter short Sidewalker impact mole tool. One aspect of these tools that is of particular is that they are also compatible with the MOLETRAC™ locatable beacon system that enables bores to be monitored during installation works.

At just 860 mm and 1,057 mm in length respectively, the new 67 mm and 75 mm diameter Sidewalker impact moling tools offer users high levels of impact and ground penetrating performance. The shorter lengths also have the advantage of offering reduced launch and receive pit excavation sizes.

This eases the use in roadways and footpaths and enables their use in circumstances such as ‘Keyhole’ installation works.

Users who frequently install multiple small diameter services for gas and water with traditional smaller diameter service moles can also benefit from not only the shorter length, but also the ability to install two services into the same bore saving time and cost.

The addition of MOLTETRAC™ to the front of these new machines enables bores to be completed confidently in areas where depth and accuracy of bore is critical. This is particularly relevant in in areas with known existing pipes, ducts and cables.

The BI Impact Beacon used in the front MOLETRAC™, is a well proven system in these high energy impact conditions. Battery life for the tracking system is 24 hours in the ground and the system is used with the proven Subsite AccuView CAM receiver allowing accurate tracking down to 3000mm depths. THE ‘URBAN EXPERT’ INSTALLS FIBRE TO THE CURB IN DRESDEN

W ith more than half of the world’s population living in cities today, the 21st century is the

century of urbanisation. In Europe alone, even more than 70% of its residents live in urban areas. Considering these figures, it is quite obvious that maintenance and development of the complex urban underground supply network is quite demanding in respect of preservation and cost reduction for private utilities and particularly for the tax-funded public sector.

The fluid-assisted HDD rig GRUNDODRILL 11XP was designed particularly with regard to the challenge of economically developing the complex urban underground infrastructure. Due to its slim construction yet powerful performance it is ideal for applications in limited spaces such as inner-city areas.

The GRUNDODRILL 11XP has a highly efficient motor technology operating economically at low noise and emission levels. The machine also features fully automatic rod exchange in only 5 seconds which ensures short idle times and uniform wear of all rods. In addition the rig can be converted for cable-guided bores in challenging terrains and great depths.

The GRUNDODRILL 11XP recently showed its abilities in the district of Löbtau, in the city of Dresden, Germany , which is a popular residential area. The district which has grown naturally since the end of the 19th century, was reconstructed after the wall came down by renovating numerous blocks of flats from the Wilhelminian era, and some vacant lots were filled with new builds. Today, Löbtau has a multitude of shopping possibilities, parks, leisure facilities and very good transport links to Dresden’s city centre.

The underground infrastructure has also been gradually adjusted to today’s requirements. Hence the street ‘Lübecker Straße’ was to be connected to the broadband cable network in October 2015. To accommodate the fibre glass cables, three 50 mm o.d. PE-HD pipes, from which the blocks of flats could be connected to the high speed internet (VSDL) via “FTTC”, had to ne installed.

With FTTC (‘Fibre to the Curb’) the glass fibre cable is led from the exchange to the serving area interface and the signal is implemented via an optical-electrical converter. This way the rest of the route to the user can be covered with the existing copper cables and no new property service connections have to be created to make the high speed internet connection available. Thus this type of connection is mainly used for expanding the VDSL infrastructure in Germany.

In order not to break up the valuable new road surfaces again, the PE protection pipes over 54, 112, 100 and 99 m length each were to be installed without trenches. The client HTP Hoch-u.Tiefbau Pfeffer GmbH awarded the contract to the special civil engineering company M&M from Löbau, which has a great deal of experience in underground pipe installation, in particular the HDD method.

M&M used the GRUNDODRILL 11XP for the first time. Due to its compact construction, it is particularly suited to drilling in very limited spaces such as inner city areas. Apart from the relatively limited space, the high number of existing lines and pipes was a particular challenge. False signals from overhead tram cables and the power supply for the signal technology made localisation difficult and an oval profile drainage pipe ND 600 had to be passed under. Applying the latest detection technology, a Digitrak F5 system, the experienced bore crew were able to lead the bore path past the numerous obstacles as planned.

The actual pipe installation process went quickly and without any problems. The 80 mm diameter

pilot bore through the relatively hard subsoil was established in just 1½ hours using the HDH bore head especially developed for very compact soils. Thanks to the good free cutting characteristics of the bore head and the perfectly mixed drilling fluid (100 kg Bentonite in 4m³ water), no separate upsizing bore was required and the PE pipes were pulled in directly into the pilot hole in just 1 hour using a standard backreamer with rinsing grooves. The total of 365 m of piping was installed in just 30 hours with the average installation speed being 12.16 m/hour.

The project was carried out as a complete service with civil engineering in just three days, to the great satisfaction of the client. Erhard Micklisch, owner of M&M was impressed with the technical benefits and the profitability of his new GRUNDODRILL 11XP. Website: www.tracto-technik.com

VERMEER UK LAUNCHES NEW D40X55 HDD RIG

F or several years Vermeer has been one of the leaders the mid-size drilling rig market

with its successful D36x50 drilling rig. However, recent changes to EU engine emissions, requiring Tier IV power units to be fitted has given Vermeer the opportunity to update the model to increase efficiency and improve power within the same footprint.

Because of the extra power and torque the new rig is called the D40x55 S-3, giving out 40,000 lbs (178 kN) of thrust and pull back and 5500 ftlb (7457 Nm) or torque – over 1000 ftlb more than it’s nearest competitor and a 10% increase on its predecessor. The 10 ft option comes with 500 ft (152 m) of rods per rack, and the 15 ft version 525 ft (160 m). The S-3 has improved speed, simplicity and sound.

Speed - with a carriage speed of 188 ft/min (57.3 m/min) making rod changing faster both in the short rod (10 ft) and long rod (15 ft) versions, offers a 7% increase on the D36x50. This allows the operator to install more linear meters per day or a quicker installation time.

Simplicity – The S-3 has reduced wiring by 40%. It has common joystick controls across the S-3 range (from the D9x13 right through to the D200x300) and better visibility of the rod loading operation and display and locator screens.

Sound – Probably the most noticeable changes on the equipment comes at start up. Fitting the new Tier IV engines has allowed the engine to be re-aligned within the drill rig and reduced the guaranteed sound power to 104 dba – and just 75.7 dba at operator ear in the cab version. This contributes to a quieter working environment, less neighbourhood disturbance and easier communication between your drill team.

This has allowed us to introduce a drill rig to operators that is faster, quieter and easier to use. The rig also offers a full range of safety features including drill box guarding, remote lock out and strike alert as well as a range of features including in-built Aurora display to use with DCI’s F range and new Falcon location systems, a range of stake down options, carriage position on display (eliminating the need for the flag system) and a new greaser system with larger grease bucket.

Improvements have also been made to the tracking of the machine and the engine can be started or stopped from the rear controls or the operator station. The wireless remote is also now standardised throughout the range and the machine can also be tracked from the rear controls if the remote is unavailable.

Under the bonnet several changes have been made to fit in the new engine. A fibreglass hood with a redesigned pivot system gives you quick access with the use of latches and gives easy access to the engine and hydraulic components. It is powered by the liquid cooled John Deere 4045 4.5l Tier IV engine giving 140 bhp.

The D40x55 also comes fitted with InSite Asset Management technology built-in, giving users fuel consumption averages, maintenance information and performance data remotely from the field.

Matthew Izzard, Vermeer UK’s Trenchless Technology Manager said: “This is an exciting time to introduce this rig into the UK market. On the back of an increase in demand for rigs and greater efficiency we have listened to what our customers want and are pleased to deliver the next generation in the leader of its class.” Website: www2.vermeer.com/vermeer/NA/en/N/equipment/directional_drills_utility_installation/

NEW HOLD/RELEASE CLEANING SYSTEM FOR SEWER PIPELINES

E ver since pipelines began to be laid to transport wastewater away from

domestic, industrial or commercial sites, one of the greatest difficulties that needed to be overcome was keeping them clean and able to perform to their design specification.

Traditionally, the cleaning operation has been undertaken using high pressure jetting systems that are either manually applied in larger diameter pipes or using mobile high pressure jetting units at smaller diameters. This option, however, requires regular CCTV inspections of the pipes in order to establish which pipes require cleaning, followed by the mobilisation of a cleaning crew and its equipment to complete the operation, an operation that comes at significant cost.

Over the past 18 months, Reece Innovation has investigated the requirements of the UK Water Industry to develop a cleaning system that will reduce the cost of regular cleaning activities, whilst still maintaining the cleanliness required in Water Companies sewer networks. The result of this research and development is the Flusher Gate.

USING THE PIPE NETWORK It has long been understood that in gravity pipelines, the presence of high volume, fast flowing wastewater is effectively a self-cleaning mechanism within the pipeline, with the flows preventing silt build-up and minimising the ability of Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) to adhere to pipe walls and cause blockages over time. This fact was used as a basis upon which any new cleaning system should operate, even where flows were small and slow.

Historical evidence has shown that the concept of using retained flows to ‘flush’ sewer networks has been around since Roman Times. This was the concept selected to form the basis of the new Reece Innovation design. So building on one of the many aspects of Roman ingenuity that we see across the country today, Reece Innovation has created a modern version of the design that is robust enough to withstand today’s harsh and often varied sewer conditions.

Using this basic principal, a system was devised that comprised the installation of a passive device within a sewer pipeline to control the flow of effluent. Holding back flows until a sufficient volume was retained meant that when released, the movement of the effluent under gravity down the pipeline would generate a flow that would make the pipe effectively self-cleaning. By holding back flows upstream of a collection point and releasing them when required, this would not only initiate cleaning downstream of the ‘dam’ point, but would also generate flow on the upstream side that would do the same job in the pipes used to store the retained volume.

THE FLUSHER GATE After careful consideration of the potential options and following extensive development and evaluation, the Flusher Gate design was completed. Designed with ease of maintenance in mind, the unit is simple to install as well as being reliable and robust, enabling it to work effectively in harsh sewer environments, thereby significantly reducing sewer cleaning costs over time.

The Flusher Gate comprises a patented latch door mechanism that can be pre-set to open at a point when a specific volume has been retained, the latter providing pressure on the Flusher Gate face to initiate opening (although the system can also be operated from the surface if required). The effluent volume on the upstream side of the gate applies a step change in the resultant moment acting on the Flusher Gate, so when the flow is released there is a highly effective flush and scour sequence throughout the pipe length covered by the Flusher Gate installation. The off-centre pivot of the Flusher Gate makes operation of the unit highly efficient.

There are also a number of seal options, depending on the application required, including an easy to attach and replace single piece ‘standard’ edge seal. These options enable the system to be easily adapted and installed in multiple manhole configurations

including situations such as a straight flow through to a 90o bend installation. The Flusher Gate is available in a variety of sizes and can be designed to fit most pipeline configurations from circular to egg-shaped as well as non-standard cross-sections.

The Flusher Gate also has a ‘Fail Safe’ design, so that the unit cannot cause back-up during high flow events. One additional advantage of this is that the Flusher Gate is also seen as an aid in flood prevention by maximising the hydraulic flow/effluent handing capacity in sewer networks.

Reece Innovation has also developed a Telemetry Module that can run alongside the Flusher Gate, providing full and real-time information about the operation of the unit over time. This provides data from which engineers can infer the sewer condition and flow rate within the length of pipeline covered. The module can be monitored onsite or remotely via WI-FI or the telecommunications networks.

Commenting on the Flusher Gate development for Reece Innovation, James Martin, Managing Director said: “Having reviewed many of the challenges of the UK Water Industry, we have developed a cleaning system that fits all their requirements. We see this as a potentially widely used tool through the water industry, not only domestically, but also internationally. With the Flusher Gate now commercially available, our team is on hand to discuss potential options for installations worldwide.” Website: www.reeceinnovation.com

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO REDUCING DISRUPTION IN THE STREET

S teve Vick International (SVI) and Northern Gas Networks (NGN), have joined forces and

developed the Enhanced S.E.A.L. system; an innovative new method that allows 100% of Tier 1 (T1) gas mains, including the last joint before entering the T2 or T3 main, to be sealed and abandoned.

Gas Distribution Networks are required to abandon or replace all cast iron and ductile T1 pipes within 30 m of a building by 2032. This is part of a gas mains replacement programme that will improve the safety and reliability of the UK gas network.

HOW THE S.E.A.L. SYSTEM HAS CHANGED Some 20 years ago SVI developed a S.E.A.L. (Stub End Abandonment Live) system that uses expanding foam to remotely seal a T1 main within 1m of the parent main, that does not require the removal of the tee piece.

Alternative methods involve digging deep excavations, often in highways, in order for the tee piece to be completely removed.

Whereas the S.E.A.L. method negates the need to dig in the carriageway directly above the tee; avoiding costly road closures, traffic management and expensive reinstatement costs together with any associated risks.

NGN recognised that recent technologies could further develop the existing S.E.A.L. system and approached SVI to design an enhanced technique, to include all the associated benefits but that would allow for 100% of the T1 pipe to be abandoned.

In collaboration with SVI, NGN conducted the NIA funded project to create the Enhanced S.E.A.L. system: an innovation of the original S.E.A.L. technique.

Peter Christie, NGN Quality Assurance Manager, commented: “The development demanded innovative thinking and collaborative working to ensure NGN get it right first time, every time.”

The key benefits of using the Enhanced S.E.A.L technique are:

A significant reduction in the risks associated with excavating in highways - the entrance pit is dug up to 60 m away in a non-sensitive area.

Reduced environmental impact - excavations are 80% smaller than those dug using alternative methods, which in turn reduces the amount of spoil sent to landfill.

Substantial cost savings – made through reduced traffic management, time on site, materials and reinstatement materials.

Reduction in disruption to customers - the technique ensures that the need for future repair work associated with leaks is eradicated.

Reduction in disruption to the public – the need for traffic management and road closures is significantly reduced using this method.

As with all NIA projects the resulting technology is shared amongst all the Gas Distribution Networks.

Richie Reed, NGN Programme Manager said: “By adopting the technique NGN anticipate a saving of £4 million in the current RIIO period.” Similar savings could be experienced by all the GDN’s if this technique is adopted. NGN approved the Enhanced S.E.A.L. technique in December 2015 and has since carried out approximately 4 operations per week across the NGN network.

SVI and NGN believe that the Enhanced S.E.A.L. Technique will contribute to providing a safe and efficient gas network for the future; with fewer gas leaks and less disruptions to customers gas supplies. Website: www.stevevick.com

RE-TEC PIPE DE-SCALER

L imescale and other hard deposits are often found on the surface of old cast iron

pipelines and can prove to be difficult to clean. Over a period of time this build up reduces the pipes diameter and thus impairing water flow.

This build up is very difficult to remove and standard drain cleaning methods such as high pressure water jetting sometimes do not prove effective.

A very simple but effective solution can be the use of a mechanical process in the form of the Re-Tec Pipe De-scaler Tool.

The steel chain cutting tool is simply attached to a 12 mm diameter steel cable which is driven by an electric drill. It is available in various sizes for use in 75 to 150 mm diameter pipes and has a working range of 20 m.

There is an added bonus. The chains can be removed from the steel cable and can be replaced by a tungsten carbide cutting head which is available in 2 sizes, 76 mm and 102 mm diameter, and which has a working range of 10 m. This cutting tool can be used for removing debris and also opening relined pipes.

The Re-Tec Pipe De-scaler and cutting tool accessories are now available from any local Jetchem and Superjet depot or alternatively online.

Potential users of the tool can get the chance to see the De-scaler and cutting tool in action at one of the company’s open day events across the country during the Spring of 2016. The second show being held at the London depot in Tilbury on between 19 and 20 May. The Jetchem and Re-Tec team will be demonstrating all of their tools and equipment so why not come along and see this and much more, along with special offers and promotions. RELINEEUROPE AT IFAT 2016

R ELINEEUROPE will be attending the IFAT 2016 (Hall B5 | Stand 241/340) which is to be held

between 30 May and 3 June 2016 in Munich, Germany. During this time the concept for rehabilitation of large profiles with GFK pipe liners will be presented including the new, unique AlphalinerPN6 developed for the economic rehabilitation of wastewater pressurised pipes and the REE4000 UV curing system with high lighting performance and initial autonomous curing.

As a system provider, RELINEEUROPE also develops and distributes the UV technology required for curing. With the REE4000 UV curing system, which will be introduced in Munich, the company now brings the world’s most powerful UV curing technology to the market. For this curing system, new UV light sources have been developed using xenon lamps which significantly increase the curing speeds in all dimensions. The light source for the DN150 to DN600 range also has more than 10x600 W lamps, the light source for the DN600 to DN1300 range offers 6x3000W.

Developed specifically for the rehabilitation of large profiles greater than DN1300, this new, compactly constructed UV core with a maximum lamp performance of 6x4000 W enables fast and thus economic curing of pipe liners with very high wall thicknesses using just UV light.

The REE4000 mobile, is claimed to be the world’s most powerful UV curing system. Alongside the highest of performance values, this system has been fitted, during the course of automation and digitalisation, with an entire range of innovative features to relieve the pressure on the system operator and construction site crew and increase safety on the site. For example, an integrated QR code scanner is now able to read Alphaliner data directly from the delivery note and automatically set all the curing parameters on the curing system. This enables the system to cure an Alphaliner autonomously. Ultrasound sensors on the UV light sources automatically recognise the end of the liner and switch the system off automatically. At the same time, the system may also be controlled using a mobile tablet computer. A feature which increases the flexibility of the system operator on site.

For large profile rehabilitation, UV light-cured GFK pipe liners will, in future, also increasingly be used in sewer rehabilitation in walk-accessible channels with very large dimensions. The rehabilitation of these channels is complex due to the large liner weights and requires both precise planning and site preparation as well as special equipment for liner installation and UV curing. RELINEEUROPE will present its overall concept for the repair of large channels at IFAT 2016. Alongside the Alphaliner1800 which is designed specifically for large dimensions and the new REE4000 UV curing technology, the concept also includes newly developed special equipment for the installation and for intensive support of planning for the executing rehabilitation companies.

Alphaliner1800 is for the installation in large channels of DN1500 with a 15 mm wall thickness using the REE4000 system. With the installation of an Alphaliner1800 in DN1500 pipe, RELINEEUROPE has successfully completed the DIBT accreditation site. The company has expanded its production systems and is now able to produce Alphaliners up to a nominal width of DN1800. With the concept ‘Systematic large-scale profile rehabilitation’, Alphaliner installation partners will be supported optimally in their demanding construction measures.

UV light-cured AlphalinerPN6 is for the rehabilitation of wastewater pressure pipes with unique, seamless, styrene-resistant interior coating. In Germany alone, there are pressure pipes in operation with a total length of around 15,000 km, some of which have considerable rehabilitation requirements. Alongside the simple pressure loads, these channels are also exposed to considerable pressures as well as high mechanical abrasion. The new AlphalinerPN6 for the rehabilitation of wastewater pressure pipes has a seamless PE interior coating

With the AlphalinerPN6, RELINEEUROPE is able to offer, for the first time ever, a seamless GFK pipe liner for the rehabilitation of wastewater pressure pipes and channels with closed constructions. The AlphalinerPN6 is designed as a statically self-supporting stand-alone pipe liner and is made up of a special polyethylene interior coating which is permanently connected to the

carrying laminate by a pure resin layer. The system is thus designed for pressures of up to 6 bar. It reliably protects the system from abrasion. The ‘Darmstadt tipping trough test’ showed an abrasion of a barely measurable 0.06 millimetres. During the testing for high-pressure flushing resistance in accordance with DIN19523, the AlphalinerPN6 also displayed no optical changes. Website: www.relineeurope.com
