OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW IN FAITH AND DISCIPLESHIP

Bringing God to People and People to God— As we continue to move through this health crisis, an increasing number of people in our church family and in our community need assistance. If you can help in

running errands, please contact Susan Kinsley, [email protected] and she will be in touch as requests for assistance are made. It is also likely that we will see an increase in benevolence requests for rent and utility payment. Please be in prayer about whether or not financial giving is a way that you can be the hands and feet of Christ. If it is, please contact Business Manager Julie Pierce, [email protected]. If you or someone you know is in need of any form of assistance, please call or email the church office or visit sydenstrickerumc.org/Assistance.

Items Needed for Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church— Rising Hope is short on a few items to keep its food pantry running efficiently. If you are headed to the store and are able, please consider picking up some quart-size re-sealable bags, some gallon-size re-sealable freezer bags and/or canned vegetables. Items can be placed in the bins on the covered walkway in front of the church.

Men’s Breakfast— The United Methodist Men will meet for virtual fellowship on Saturday, July 25, at 8:00 a.m. Contact Gene Russell, [email protected] for information on joining the meeting.

Ms. Jeni and Ms. Amy Want to Chat! Schedule some one on one time with them to talk about what you are doing at home, show them things you have made or just chat about anything! This is open to children of all ages and to youth, because we miss hearing from you. Contact Jeni, [email protected] with questions or sign up on Ms. Jeni's calendar.

VBS Donations— Many of you have donated items for VBS in the past, but we are in need of monetary donations this year to offset some of the cost of supplies needed for the at-home kits we provided for families. Please visit SydenstrickerUMC.org/VBSdonation2020 if you are able to donate.

Young Adult Check-In— Our next Zoom meeting will be on Sunday, July 12, at 8:00 p.m. We hope to see many of you there, so that we can begin thinking about events to have once we are face to face again. Please contact Grant Greffey, [email protected], for the meeting login.

Stewardship Chair— Do you have a heart for the church and its mission and ministry? Serving as the chairperson of the stewardship committee is a great way of conveying that passion to others in the church family by helping to highlight the importance of giving. The Nominations Committee is looking for two people who would be willing to serve as the Stewardship Chair or Chairs for our Fall Stewardship Campaign (couples are welcome to volunteer together!). This is a short term commitment but one that is vital to the operation of the church. Please contact Pastor Don, [email protected] or Anna Campbell, [email protected], if you have questions or would like to volunteer.

Church Conference and Call to Leadership— It is that time of year when we begin looking toward our annual Church Conference, which is via Zoom on Monday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m. Team leaders should begin the process of working on your 2021 budget and should let Pastor Don know if you need assistance in nominations for your teams. We are also now accepting applications for the two at-large Leadership Board positions and the Freshman Lay Leader position. If you are interested, please visit the Nominations and Leadership page on the website for the application, current covenant and guiding principles. Applications should be submitted to Pastor Don no later than August 15. Let us rejoice in all that we have accomplished in spite of the adversities we have faced.

Beyond the Book— This United Methodist Women Reading Program will resume on Saturday, July 25, at 9:30 a.m. The book for July is “Glory Happening: Finding the Divine in Everyday Places,” by Kaitlin B. Curtis. Contact Kim Carter, [email protected] for more information.

GriefShare— Have you recently experienced a loss? Healing from the death of a spouse, a close family member or special friend takes time. Join us and explore ways to move throughout your journey of mourning to a new future without forgetting the one you have lost. SUMC will be conducting a GriefShare

Support Group Workshop on 13 Monday evenings. We will start on Monday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. and end on December 7. The location of our meeting will be determined at a later date. The group will focus on Christ-centered healing through videos and small group discussion. The cost will be $15.00 for the workbook. Scholarships are available. For more information or to register, please contact Jackie Fong, 703-440-0082, [email protected].

Has God Given You the Gifts of Organization and Detail? If so, perhaps God is calling you to be a church treasurer! The treasurer works with the Business Manager to manage the day-to-day finances of the church. Main duties include monitoring and reconciling bank accounts, reviewing and signing payment vouchers and checks and reviewing weekly counter sheet summaries and monthly finance reports. Attendance at Leadership Board meetings once a month is also required. On average, the position requires 2-3 hours per week. If you are willing to serve SUMC by helping to oversee finances, please contact Julie Pierce, [email protected].

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Photos Wanted! Sydenstricker Chapel will be 110 years old in August and SUMC historian Annette Tison is seeking photos to help document its history. Of prime interest to her are photos of the cemetery, our pastors, and the Chapel—inside or outside— before the early 1960s. You may have the exact photos she’s looking for without realizing it! For example, were you, your parents or older siblings baptized or married in the Chapel? Did you, your parents or siblings sing in the choir? Attend VBS, Sunday School events, covered dish meals or Easter and Christmas services there? Any of these prime “photo opportunities” could help illustrate the Chapel’s many decades. Please dig through your old photos and see what you can find. Ask your friends, relatives and neighbors who worshiped in the Chapel to look through their photos as well. Please send your photos to Annette Tison, [email protected]. If your photos need to be scanned, call Annette at 703-690-8540 and she will be glad to make arrangements to scan them for you. Please help us illustrate the Chapel’s long presence in our community!

Church Office Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Electronic Giving— Going on vacation or missing church and still want to make your giving goals? It’s SO easy! Bank Transfer: You can make recurring weekly or

monthly bank transfers from your checking or savings account by filling out an Authorization Form, available on the SydenstrickerUMC.org/Giving page. Send a completed form and a voided check to the Business Manager at the church office.

Online: You can also access the Vanco Services secure portal from the SydenstrickerUMC.org/Giving page by clicking the “Give Online” button. The portal will allow you to make one-time or recurring donations from your checking or savings account (our preferred method) or from a credit or debit card.

If you have any questions, please contact Julie Pierce, [email protected]

Cleaning Update— The sanctuary and all upper levels of the sanctuary building (offices, entryway), all lower levels of Hottle Hall, the Chapel sanctuary and upper level Chapel classrooms and the playground have been sprayed or fogged with disinfectant and the carpets in these areas have been extractor cleaned.

The Upper Room— Amy Dannemiller has graciously agreed to mail a copy of the July-August Upper Room to anyone who would like one. Please email Amy, [email protected] if you would like her to send you a copy.

Amazon Smile— Amazon Smile is a website that lets customers enjoy the same wide selection of products as Amazon. The difference is that when someone shops at Amazon Smile, sydenstrickerumc.org/Smile, the Amazon Foundation donates 0.5% of the price of eligible purchases to SUMC. You can now also access it from the Amazon Shopping app on your smart phone. For more information, please visit the Amazon website. If you are an Amazon shopper, please consider using Amazon Smile to help support our ministries and programs.

Resources for Those Facing Difficult Times— If you know someone who is facing loss of income, scarcity or homelessness due to the pandemic, please share this link to Fairfax County’s Human Services Resource Guide.

New Food Corner Hours— Effective immediately, the Food Corner will be open on Tuesdays, from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Egg Cartons Needed— The Food Corner is in need of empty egg cartons. They can be placed in the bin on the covered walkway.

Board Meeting—The July meeting of the SUMC Leadership Board will be held virtually on Sunday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. The agenda will be posted on the church website at least seven days in advance, sydenstrickerumc.org/lbagenda. If you would like to attend, please contact Susan Kinsley for the link, [email protected].

Save the Dates! The Chapel is 110 years old in August and there will be opportunities for you to learn about and celebrate its history. On Sunday, August 2, at 2:00 p.m. SUMC Historian, Annette Tison, will give a presentation on the history of the Chapel and the church and, during worship on the weekend of August 8-9, we will celebrate the anniversary. The nature of the celebration will depend upon the status of our regathering, so keep an eye out for updates on the details.
