Choir Rehearsals ResumeThis Wednesday, Aug. 21 , at 7 p.m.

in Room 4, 2nd floor of the community center

This first rehearsal will be for the 11 a.m. Mass on August 25.

Did you know that singing in harmonyactually makes you happier?

It releases chemicals in the brain that reduce anxiety and increase

contentment, alertness and connection with those around you.

Singing with a group does it more than just listening to music or

singing by yourself. All singers feel these benefits: beginners get just

as much out of it as those with years of experience.

The Corpus Christi Choir sings in harmony every week. So, come sing, serve your parish community, and get happy!

Join the Choir:It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. You don’t’ have to come every week: Everyone is

welcome to participate just on the weeks they have time. On

weeks when you can sing, just come to rehearsal Wednesday

night at 7 pm and come to warm up at 10:15 on Sunday morning.

If it’s several weeks before you can come again, no problem!

2. You don’t have to be able to read music: Many of

us don’t read music, or only read a little. You can learn your part

just by listening in rehearsal. And if you join the choir, you will be

surprised how quickly you can learn to follow the music!

3. We welcome beginners: For many of us, this is the first

choir we have ever been in. Most of us have never taken voice

lessons. We have members with all different levels of experience.

If you like to sing, then you belong in the Corpus Christi Choir! Just come to any rehearsal to try it out, or contact Matthew Purvis:

Pope Francis to parents:

Teach your childrento respect, defend life

Respect for human life from conception to natural

death is something children must be taught, notmainly with words, but by the example of theirparents, Pope Francis said.

“Parents are called to pass on to their children theawareness that life must always be defended,” PopeFrancis wrote in a message to people joining in theBrazilian Catholic Church’s celebration of FamilyWeek, which began August 11.

The pope returned to his condemnation of the“throwaway culture.” He said that modern culturestend to treat even human lives as disposable, pointingto the way people, societies and even governmentstend to treat both the young and the old.

Pope Francis said that parents have a responsibility tofight that disposable culture by teaching their childrenthat human life “from the womb,” is a gift from God. New life ensure the future of humanity, he said, whileolder people - especially grandparents - “are the livingmemory of a people and transmit the wisdom of life.”

The pope also charged married Catholic couples andtheir children with the task of recognizing they mustbe “the most convincing heralds” of the beauty andgrace of Christian marriage. Ca tholic News Service

Co-habitationErma Bombeck once said: “Living together is to

marriage as babysitting is to being a parent.” If livingtogether before marriage was such a sure fire way toensure a marriage’s success, divorce rates for thosewho cohabitate would be lower than those who don’t. Actually the opposite is the case.

The USCCB website that helps young couplespreparing for marriage < www.foryourmarriage.org >reports that marriages that come after cohabitation are46% more likely to end in divorce.

Most likely, much of this is because couples whocohabitate before marriage have at least one memberwho, at some level, really doesn’t want to get married.

Living together before marriage can often be evidenceof an unwillingness to live up to the demands of thesacrament.

We are blessed by good strong, devoted marriedcouples who show us that love is possible in this oftendifficult world in which we live. Many cohabitatingcouples are only in it for the short haul. Marriedcouples are in it for life. We, their children, society, and they themselves, benefit from such generous longterm, life-long commitment. Fr. Rick Malloy, S.J.

Communion Line ReverenceQ. I recently saw a young boy almost topple over

in the Communion line as he tried to genuflect, bow and make the sign of the cross all at the sametime! Exactly what act of reverence is required inthe Communion line before receivingCommunion?

A. According to the bishops of the United States,

all that is called for is a simple bow of the head.“When receiving Holy Communion, thecommunicant bows his or her head before thesacrament as a gesture of reverence and receivesthe Body of the Lord from the minister.”

St. Dominic1170-1221

Founder of the Dominican Order

The founder of the Dominican Order, St. Dominic(1170-1221) was born in Spain, where he was welleducated in preparation for the priesthood.

Dominic was ordained in 1206, and when his bishop,Diego, was appointed a papal emissary to theAlbigensians, Dominic was chosen to accompany him.

The Albigensians (also called the Cathari - Cartharism)were an heretical group in Southern France who heldthat all matter (including the human body) is evil, andonly spirit is good. And so they denied the Incarnation(it was repulsive to them that God would take onhuman flesh!) and the sacraments (because all thesacraments make use of material things).

On the same principal they abstained from procreation, and took a minimum of food and drink. Their simple, penitential lifestyle won them the sympathy of thecommon people, and the Church’s efforts to counteracttheir influence had been unsuccessful. Part of theChurch’s previous efforts included military force towipe out the Albigensians.

Dominic saw immediately why the preaching was notsucceeding: the ordinary people admired and followedthe ascetical heroes of the Albigensians, andunderstandably, they were not impressed by theCatholic preachers who traveled like princes withhorses and entourage, had servants and stayed at thebest inns. Their preaching was uninspired, and theyutterly failed to present a challenging alternative to thepurity and zeal of the Albigensians.

Dominic, therefore, with a couple of Cistercian monks, began itinerant preaching according to the Gospel idealof simplicity and poverty. They traveled on footwithout money. They preached wherever there was anaudience, and exemplified the Gospel ideals of faithand charity. They were well-trained in theology anddoctrine, and specially skilled in the art ofcommunication. Dominic continued this work for 10years, and his preaching was successful.

In 1215 Dominic organized the Order of Preachers: areligious body of men living a simple lifestyle anddedicated to combating heresy by preaching a messageof love and forgiveness. The Order was approved byRome in 1216, several years after the establishment ofthe Franciscans.

The Dominicans joined the new era in religious lifebegun by Francis – the age of the mendicants(beggars). Like the Franciscans, the Dominicans didnot live within an enclosed monastery, but proclaimedthe Gospel on the road. The two founders, Dominicand Francis, had occasion to meet in Rome. Theygreeted one another with fraternal affection. St.Dominic continued traveling, preaching, and workingto strengthen his Order until his death in 1221.

Pope Francis spoke of how St. Dominic wassuccessful in his preaching because of his simplelifestyle and his simple message of love andforgiveness.

Of course, Pope Francis also admires St. Francis ofAssisi, whose name he took upon his election to thepapacy. St. Francis, too, was successful in drawingpeople to Jesus and to the Church because of hisembrace of poverty and simplicity.

And Pope Francis himself has made an effort to tonedown some of the pomp surrounding the papacy — hecarried his own bags in Brazil, rode in the same bus asthe cardinals after his election instead of riding in thepapal limousine, lives in simpler quarters, wearssimpler vestments, etc.

While we might be impressed with extravagantdisplays of authority and power, what really drawspeople to Jesus is when those who proclaim the Gospeldisplay humility and poverty of spirit — the kind ofhumility and poverty shown by Peter and Paul, andDominic and Francis, and Jesus himself.

St. Jane de

Chantal1572-1641

Co-Founder of theOrder of theVisitation

Jane de Chantal was born into a wealthy family in Dijon,France. She married Baron de Chantal at the age oftwenty, and bore seven children (three of whom died ininfancy). In 1600 her life took a tragic turn when herhusband was killed in an accident. In the followingyears, as she struggled with her children’s upbringing, her heart increasingly turned to religious life. She vowedthat she would never remarry.

In 1604, a sermon by the bishop of Geneva, Francis deSales, was a turning point in Jane’s life. It was also thebeginning of a deep spiritual partnership that wouldadvance them both along their paths to sanctity. Francispresented the spiritual life not as something only fit formonks and nuns, but something for everyone — capableof being lived out in the world. Jane immediatelyresponded to his message, and asked him to become herspiritual director.

Eventually, in 1610, Francis and Jane founded the Orderof the Visitation of Mary, a congregation dedicated toprayer and works of charity. Their original intention wasthat the order would be adapted for widows and otherwomen who, for reasons of health or age, could notendure the rigors of the cloistered life. There was to beno cloister, and they would be free to undertake spiritualand corporal works of mercy.

But the plan met with such relentless disapproval fromecclesiastical authorities (because of the usual oppositionto women in active ministry) that, in the end, Jeanneconsented to accept enclosure.

She encountered persistent criticism from churchauthorities, yet her order grew to include 86 communitiesin several countries, all devoted to the care of the sickand the bereaved. Through all of her trials, shemaintained heroic faith and charity. St. Jane died at theage of 69 in 1641, and was canonized in 1767.

Early efforts by women like Angela Merici, founder of

the Ursulines (1535), and Jane Frances de Chantal, founder with Francis de Sales of the Visitation Sisters(1610), were halted as the cloister was imposed bychurch authorities. Like St. Jane, CatherineMcAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, neverintended to found a religious order of women wearinga religious habit, but, at the insistence of herarchbishop, she did so. Vincent de Paul insisted thatthe Daughters of Charity, which he founded withLouise de Marillac, would have no convent but thehospital, no cloister but the streets.

It was not until 1900 that the Church, in Pope LeoXIII’s Conditae a Christo, recognized congregationscommitted to the active apostolate as true religious.

In 1952, Pope Pius XII convoked the First WorldCongress of Mothers General and suggested updatingcertain aspects of the sisters’ lives so they would beable to respond to the needs of the times.

Pope Pius XII issued two documents on women inreligious congregations: Sponsa Christi (1950) andSacra Virginitatis (1954). Among the issuesconsidered were the modification of the habit, theabolition of class distinctions that existed amongsome sisters, and the use of the vernacular in prayingthe Divine Office. — Fr. Richard McBrien, C.S.C.

“Love! love! love! my daughters! I know of nothing

else.... If I followed my inclination, and if I were notafraid of wearying the sisters, I should never speak ofanything but charity; and I assure you, I scarcely everopen my mouth to speak of holy things, without havinga mind to say: You shall love the Lord with your whole

heart, and your neighbor as yourself.”

“Must you continue to be your own cross? No matter

which way God leads you, you change everything intobitterness by constantly brooding over everything! Forthe love of God, replace all this self-scrutiny with a pure

and simple glance at God’s goodness!”

“Should you fall even fifty times a day, never on any

account should that surprise or worry you. Instead, ever so gently set your heart back in the right direction, and practice the opposite virtue, all the time speakingwords of love and trust to our Lord after you havecommitted a thousand faults, as much as if you hadcommitted only one. Once we have humbled ourselvesfor the faults that God allows us to become aware of in

ourselves, we must forget them and go forward.”

“No matter what happens, be gentle with yourself.”
