ST. PETER PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the believers of St. Peter Parish, having our beginnings as the earliest Catholic Church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans on the Northshore, in response to God's call, come together:

• to love God and one another • to worship as a faith community • to be God's hands, heart and mind and • to provide for our community's spiritual and

physical needs

In doing this, we glorify God and help realize His reign on earth. While rejoicing in the experience of our pilgrimage, we must ever keep in mind our ultimate destination through our faithful stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Called to be a prayerful and hospitable Catholic family of living faith, we welcome and invite all people to share in our unique gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Dear St. Peter Church and School Community, After much prayer and discernment, it is with joy that I officially announce the name of our new parish building which will be built on Temperance Street. The name will be Holy Family Center. The construc-tion of Holy Family Center will begin very soon. Please be assured that I will keep you updated on the progress of the construction. We thank God for His guiding hand throughout our preparations.

In my discernment process, various paths led me to this name. First of all, it is my prayer and desire that the name, Holy Family Center, will remind all of us to look to the Holy Family who were fashioned in per-fect love by the Father, as our model for holiness. It is through their intercession that we pray to become families strong in faith and holiness bringing the Good News beyond the walls of Holy Family Center into the world each day.

In a recent letter from Archbishop Gregory Aymond to all Catholic School Administration, Faculty and Staff, and to all the Catechetical leaders and Catechists serving in our archdiocese, he reminded them that they have been entrusted with a sacred duty to hand on the faith in collaboration with parents, who are the first and primary educators and formators of their children’s faith. For all of us in St. Peter Parish, it is al-so our sacred duty for our families.

Let us pray for the intercession of the Holy Family and St. Peter for our students in St. Peter Catholic School and our students in St. Peter Youth Faith Formation, asking that they are strengthened and inspired as they grow in faith and holiness in their classes in Holy Family Center.

The physical presence of Holy Family Center will witness very loudly that we care about the spiritual life of the children placed in our care.

Thank you St. Peter Church and School Community!

God Bless,

Fr. Otis Young, Jr. Pastor

A Hurricane Prayer

Our Father in Heaven, through the powerful intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, spare us from all harm during this hurricane season and protect us and our homes from

all disasters of nature. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Amen

ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH

REMINDERS FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Any Catholic who has made their first communion and finding themselves in a state of grace (not in a state of grave

sin or persisting in a particular sin) may receive communion.

RECEIVING COMMUNION Communion on the Tongue: Make a slight bow before stepping forward. Receive the Eucharist by responding “Amen” to the words, “The Body of Christ.” After doing so, proceed to open your mouth and stick out your tongue for the minister to place the host upon it.

Communion on the Hand: Make a slight bow before stepping forward. Present your hands flat and place one on top of the other. Do not form a ‘v’ shape with your hands, the host may drop through. Receive the Eucharist by responding “Amen” to the words “The Body of Christ.” After hearing you say Amen, the minister will place the host on your flat hands. At this time, use the hand which is underneath the hand with the host on it to pick up the host and place it in your mouth carefully, do this in front of the min-ister. Do not walk away with the Host.

Chalice: Make a slight bow before stepping forward. Wait for the minister to say “The Blood of Christ” and then respond clearly, “Amen.” Do not grab the chalice from the minister. Allow it to be presented to you. Carefully grasp the chalice with both hands, however, no part of the recipient’s hand (i.e. fingers) should come in contact with the rim of the chalice and should definitely not extend over the rim to the inside of the chalice, then consume a small amount of the precious blood in a reverent manner. Carefully hand the chalice back to the minister. Helpful Reminders: • Never “grab” anything. We receive communion, we don’t snatch it. • Do not wear Gloves, however if they are needed for medical reasons, receive the Eucharist on the tongue. • Be mindful to refrain from using certain makeup products that leave a mark if you intend to receive from the chalice.

September 2019

To: Clergy, Religious and Laity of the Archdiocese of New Orleans

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

It is our archdiocesan tradi on to offer the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, be er known as con-fession, on a weekday evening near the Feast of the Exalta on of the Cross. I am pleased to inform you that many people in the Archdiocese of New Orleans have taken advantage of this opportunity. This year confessions will be available in all Catholic churches in the Archdiocese of New Orle-ans on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 5:00PM – 6:30PM. At St. Peter's we will offer confessions from 4:30PM - 6:00PM. Please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to invite the healing Christ into your heart with his promise of mercy. Pope Francis has reminded us that God never res of forgiving us. Perhaps we grow red of asking for forgiveness. Pope Francis said, “Confession is the passage from misery to mercy… This is the heart of Confession: not the sins we declare, but the divine love we receive, of which we are ever in need. The confessional is a place of mercy.” Please consider having your family come to church together for Confession on Wednesday, September 11. Wishing you God’s blessings, I am Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Gregory M. Aymond Archbishop of New Orleans GMA/mk
