Group: Female Issues for Adolescents
Lesson Plan: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Session Time: 40 minutes
Objectives/Goals:
1. Members will be able to emotionally and logically assess why they self-‐harm.
2. Members will better understand the depth of self-‐harm and it’s negative
affect on themselves and those surrounding them.
3. Members will begin to understand that self-‐harm is not a healthy coping skill.
4. Members will support each other and give feedback as to why self-‐harm is
not a necessary coping skill.
Plan:
1. Have materials ready at each member’s spot.
2. Greeting & Rules Review
3. Shining Star Exercise:
a. Have each member write their name in the center of the star
b. Have each member write one reason why they self-‐harm on each
point (five reasons total-‐ should be the most prevalent)
c. Have each cut away one point they are willing to let go of and stop
allowing to be an issue
d. Now have them pass that point to the person to their left, that person
will write on the other side of the point why they should love
themselves instead/why that shouldn’t be a reason
e. The point should then be returned to the original owner
f. Repeat steps c, d, & e, but have them pass the points to different
members each time (to the right, across, diagonal) until all points
have been processed
g. Once the owner has all their points back, they will put their star back
together with the new reasons why they shouldn’t self-‐harm facing up
h. On the back of their star, in the center, they will write three reasons
why they live/what they live for
4. Debriefing/Discussion:
a. How are you feeling after seeing why each person self-‐harms?
b. How are you feeling after seeing why each person doesn’t think you
should?
c. What do you think was the point of this exercise?
d. How did it feel cutting away your points?
e. How did it feel putting your star back together with positive
messages?
Materials:
1. Paper Stars
2. Different colored pens/markers
3. Scissors for each member
4. Tape
