Twitter a case of Fatal attraction or twitter a case of asting in the tale (not tail)?

Social media a formidable foe for mainstream English media? This blog was

posted on 31st Dec 2010.

Today I am revisiting the subject wondering if twitter is case of Fatal attraction or is

twitter a case of a sting in the tale (not tail)?

An innocuous platform, bird with an open beak imposing serious and debilitating

condition of 140 characters and no more! Wonder whats become of the machismo

and the macho, those who strut their wares of how to beat the system and extend

the boundaries. No signs at all, no struggle what so ever caved in tamely, guess

this is harsh! We took to Twitter as a fish does to water.

Low internet penetration in India, yet #2 when it comes to twitter usage

globally after USA, ahead of Japan, Germany & UK! "why? The partial answer

lies in the fact that our media is not credible print & electronic. These two seem to

have established academies to train and churn out the best that Goebbels would

have willingly given his right arm for. Electronic medium in particular has outdone

Goebbels the original propagandists.

What is Twitter? Normally described as social media platform! The meaning differs

from person to person some use it for selling, some for connecting with the world, afew for fun and some for sharing knowledge, views and debate. It is a perfect and

effective antidote for our self professed pompous, self-righteous, sanctimonious

ostensible journalists.

Twitter is also the alterego for many, Twitter is the sounding board, Twitter is for

attracting others, personalities from Entertainment Industry announce forthcoming

releases, Socialites their pet themes and of course media personalities invite you

to view their show on TV and pose questions, more importantly they mock and

challenge.Ah last but not the least manufacturing fake tweets by TV channel

to influence viewers.

Twitter has become a personal pigeonhole for Tweeple who block the journalistic

fraternity, pelt them with tweets to which the recipients cannot retort directly, this is

a role reversal to the utter dismay of the media, has not yet been able to come to

terms with. It is reported that a show hostess last week on air in the course of show

stated that she was a hated figure on Twitter, question is? Did she elaborate on her

own contributions for attaining such a cult status

An indisputable fact is that people on this forum have tremendous knowledge on

almost all subjects are vocal and quick to correct any misrepresentation by the

media folks, this leads to debates and often heated exchanges largely civil in

nature often ending in Tweeple being labeled by media folks as Internet Hindus,

Right wingers, Khakhi Chaddi Brigade, Trolls etc etc.

There are stray incidents of abusive language being employed by a few, blocking

is normal. Irreverent Tweets are also a norm, rumors by media, as also

misinformation is tried to be inflicted on us, such Tweets are duly deleted with

promptness that the mischief does not return to haunt the perpetrator, by way of

retweet or be used as evidence to confront the culprit. Tech savvy Tweeple ensure

that such tweets are instantly captured and re-posted to the dismay and discomfortof these individuals who tried to be cute on this forum. There is a recent instance of

a journo from Economic Times going overboard and posting hateful tweets, cruelly

attempting to later justify them as a joke, we did not detect any humor what so ever

in those tweets, will leave it to you readers to reach your own independent

conclusion. However this was picked up and a blog was posted.

It has been famously said by a Tweeple Media is a crime scene ensure a

screenshot is retained How true are these words you will be able to gauge for

yourself by all the screenshots that are posted below.

Maintaining the decency and also the possibility that some who visit this blog may

not take kindly to abusive tweets being displayed that is being avoided though links

to such tweets are posted for the information of all those who may wish to read and

acquaint themselves with such personalities.

The intention is to keep this blog alive by daily updates. An earnest request to all

the readers, please forward screenshot that they wish to be published here and for

the abusive tweet please do forward url.

In conclusion a few journalists in the West have had to lose their jobs on account of

intemperate and offensive tweets, I am hoping that this post will ensure erring

journalists in India are also dealt with in a befitting manner for their misdemeanor.

Journalist Janak Purohit says that the MLAs were watching indecent pictures , and

therefore he went to the Speaker office to complain. The question is that what is

indecent? A typical Gujarati MLA would open Divya Bhaskar and Gujarat

Samachar site. Both the sites contain indecent pictures of Poonam Pande and

Sunny Leone on their front page regularly. What Purohit claims to be indecent,

This is a great Blog post. This information above clearly showcases lack

of maturity of our Indian jounalist. As Twitter and facebook kind of social networks

starts defining the new mode of interlocks and information sources, there is a

need for all ( especially those journalist with SELF CENTERED attitude) to be

respectful to others opinion. The current crop of people and new generation is

always thinking out of box and is extremely direct about their feelings and opinion.

The old mindset journalist ( who seems to have EGO and brand name) should

understand the changing landscape in the society and should not paint all with the

same brush.

playing politics/Manipulating games to victimise tweeple on the Social media

network (SMN) as SMN is truly democratic in nature and is a 2 way communication

unlike TV.

Welcome to the blog. Thank you for posting your views.

Yes indeed the alternate media has made life difficult for crony journalists

they can no longer have a free run.

Those who disagree are not necessarily evil or extremists as these ones

would want us to believe.

The fact is that these individuals have brought the profession to complete

disrepute. The so called 4th pillar of democracy is corroded beyond repair.

Generalization, sensationalism are the two ways that are being employed

to keep their channels afloat.

I am hoping that this blog will stay alive with enough and more incidents

being posted on a daily basis as also comments from readers to convert this

into a case study for students of Journalism.

Your post essentially is about the personal biases of these twitter age

journos and also their 'inseparable' relationship with the governing class.

The relationship between current breed of journo [who refuses to be anonymous

these days] and political establishment have become especially delicate because

of their daily interaction with Netas, particularly those from the ruling party!

The single most important freedom a journo commands is the freedom to criticize

those who claim to govern us. Beginning from the top to the bottom, a journalists

job is to doggedly and unsparingly monitor the day to day conduct of these

politicians. But thats what the journalistic code book suggested.

In reality and on the ground they are also lesser mortals, easily falling for the lure,

their job offers. The journalistic monk-like ethics is replaced now by the girlie

giggles, banters, masala gossips!

Primarily all these are done in the hope that their informal relations and

interactions will lead them to some privileged information. But soon the need for

privileged information is replaced by privileges job has on the offer! The easy

accreditated access to those in power puts these young ones in some kind of a

high.

Not in the distant past a young reporter was first grounded on grass root civic

beats and from there s/he would be graduated to the higher echelons of the power

structure. These young ones today are given important beat right after their

induction programme is over.

They all have huge liking for entertaining and also being entertained. A peek into

the press club in Delhi would reveal how integral has this entertaining has become

the part of a journos daily routine. 'Entertain the source' order has become 'get

entertained by the source' phenomenon. Lunches, drinks with powerful ones give

them some stature amongst their own clan. Closely watching their closeness is

also the lobby of political lobbyists who also join their entertainment hour. Venue

then from a lowly press club, shifts to a 5-Star bars. A friend of mine who is in PRcalls these journalists as Freedom fighters. They fight for everything that is

available free to them as journalistic privilege!!

Politicians and journalists should be like natural adversaries. Getting close to

them, one has to be as detached as a water droplet on a lotus petal. Not hostile

but one mustnt even compromise the right to evaluate and criticize.

But that is not the case. Most journos have their latent ambitions of getting into

politics. If you do not have one, politicians will still dig out the route to the core of

your mindspace or heartspace. It could suddenly begin by remembering your

sons first name; Or surprising you by remembering your anniversary or birthdays.

From a cake here or some flower there, the give & give relation sometime soon

becomes give & get. There are other pleasant surprise pack of rewards too: You

suddenly get nominated to journalist exchange programme and you are travelling

to some exciting destinations. Or shortlisted to the next PM entourage. Or if

nothing at the least, you could get nominated in the Railway advisory committee

or the coveted Accreditation committee. Privilege list is endless, but all these are

very minor ones that I count here.

All these and much more others, lead to the news biases. First latent biases and

then most apparent ones. So apparent that one would even not mind assuming

the role of the informal spokesperson of the party or a politicians. First it would

start on the tweets and other social sites. Soon it would be spilling out in the

bulletins.

The personal biases of the reporters find favours from the producers and soon

even the media house falls for their reporters proximity with the power structure.

Then that media organization changes its corporate color and paints it in the color

of the favored partys ideology. Soon this becomes evident in the selection of

news events and stories that are reported and how they are to be played up or

played down.

Biases can be categorized as promotion biases: when stories are slanted to suitan objective. Sometimes it is also rat race bias, which essentially means a

tendency to report safe. So whatever everyone else is reporting you also report

and avoid stories that can stir up problems. Which is why every TV studio has a

huge number of TVs; all showing different news channels' bulletins. Then there is

the case of playing up biases: like Rahul Gandhi having shaved off his beard also

becomes a breaking news! The other natural biases that are common to most

journalists include gender, sexual orientation, ethnic groups including race and

religion.

This is where Indias is seeing a new divide. With left getting completely sidelined,

the centre & Center of Right are the two distinctive groups emerging in the current

fight, be it in news room or in the civil society.

Most journos now refusing to be anonymous, are displaying their leaning so

evidently now that a news addict consumers having known about an event can

blindly predict how a particular journalist would react about it in her /his tweets or in

news bulletin!! Their journalistic slip is hugely showing, but shameless creature

that they have now become, they hardly bother about them. In their tweets, in their

news summation or in their arguments on public platforms their slip shows.

Coming back to your post today, I would like to inform the alert tweeps that there

are methods to analyze & quantify bias. Through their tweets and disclosed profile

one can survey their political/cultural attitudes particularly those who are there on

the fore front of the news bulletins. 2. The news beat they are assigned to. 3.

His/her previous professional profiling 4. Collection of their quotes in bulletins or

tweets or in their public discourses about their beliefs 5. Compiling of policies

recommended in news stories or their frequent tweetings. 6. - /+ve coverage of a

particular subject and other such background materialthat these journos end up serving to us through their informal interaction on the

belief that public memory is not that sharp.

Good post Anil. Keep the tweet compilation going so that you can invite students

from communication schools to do a dissertation on the biases of each of the

iconic journalists that we face almost every minute of our awakened life.

networking sites and when We rebut them factually they certify us all as 'Trolls'. I

know cure of deadly disease is always a lengthy procedure and the cure of this

biased approach of these offsprings of Lord Maculay will take long time. But this

blog post is certainly like an Ace in the Pack to expose the biased media. Great

The facts and conduct of the media personalities if one may call so are

indeed very well known to most of us.

This is an effort in documenting their unacceptable conduct and words at a

single point so that at a later stage we can present this as a case study to

the aspiring journalists.

Twitter has come as a boon to millions of us, who can now challenge and

expose our media.

Twitter is proving to be the grave yard for the mainstream English media

population.

No more shoot and scoot. Everything is captured, presented and presented
