Twitter for Business
Why Use Social Networking?
• Raise Your Business Profile – if you’re an online company how does anyone know you exist?
• Raise Your Personal Profile – Network, make new and useful connections, be seen as the ‘expert’ in your field
• The Complicated One…………………….
1) Each message is called a ‘Tweet’ and tweets are 140 characters long.
2) Unlike Facebook you can interact with ANYONE without their permission
3) Its working model is somewhat like Chinese Whispers4) Totally up to date… hear the news that is only seconds old long
before it hits the headlines (Alexander McQueen, John Terry etc)5) Very effective at finding out what the world is talking about,
eavesdrop on strangers conversations about your product or service!6) Build new business relationships worldwide. Networking events are
totally last year – now everyone meets on Twitter instead. 7) Uncensored – People speak more freely
Finding People• Use the Search Tool to find specific names (i.e, Duncan Bannatyne, Jonathan Ross,
ASOS, House Of Fraser, GHD)
5 Tips To Get Started…
• Inevitably, when you join Twitter you will be Tweeting to yourself. How do you start a Twitter following?
1) Start with any friends/family/known business acquaintances 2) Tag yourself in TRENDING TOPICS 3) Make your first tweets witty, light, current and interesting to make
people want to follow you. 4) People to follow might include: Mums in Business, Women in
Business, Business organisations, people in your town, journalists5) Don’t go following 100’s of people straight away!

Re-TweetingWhat, Why? How?
Trending TopicsWhats the point?? How do you do it? Why do you want to
use them? What shouldn’t you do with them?
HOW NOT TO USE TRENDING TOPICS…….!!!
Back in June 2009 the furniture brand Habitat caused a media frenzy by Spamming hash tags; whilst Tweeting about their furniture deals they included the
highly trending hash tag #IranianElections amongst others. Terrible Marketing Behaviour!!!
When Twitter can be Social Suicide…
Twitter as a Modern and Effective Customer Service
Tool…
And Twitter as an Effective Research Tool……
The Art of Tweeting• Add some Nonsense – unlike Facebook it is acceptable on Twitter to
include some non-business related tweets, so perhaps X Factor, Eastenders, traffic, food… include some ‘real time’ info but ask yourself ‘is it interesting?’
• Engage and Interact! This is YOUR personality showcase
• Re-Tweet other people – particularly useful when you have nothing interesting to say
• Do Tweet Special Offers, events and Promotions
• Do Tweet to strangers!! Build new relationships!
