● Welcome each participant to Journey Off the Map. Invite them to make a name tag. ● Say: “This year at VBS we will set out on a journey to a place no one has visited before.
We will need to be skilled at survival, able to navigate unknown terrain, and most importantly, be willing to follow our faithful and dependable Guide—Jesus.”
● Lead the conferees in prayer. Ask the Lord to help participants discover new ways to teach and minister to preschoolers and their families.
2. Make a Field Journal (10 minutes)
● Say: “Before we begin our journey, we are going to make a Field Journal. This journal will help you keep notes and ideas from today’s journey.”
● Distribute one file folder to each conferee. ● Explain how to make the Field Journal:
○ Open up the file folder so the tab is on the right. ○ Lay the open folder on a flat surface. ○ Fold up the bottom third of the folder and make a crease. ○ Fold in the left side so the edge meets the center. ○ Fold in the right side so the edge (not tab) meets the center. ○ Pick up the file folder and fold the middle to opposite direction. ○ Set the file folder on the table so it looks like a “W.” ○ Push the outer two sides together to fold the book. ○ Place a long piece of packing tape on the left border to bind the pages together. ○ Tape the bottom right edges on the front and then again on the back cover.

● Ask each conferee to find the two handouts. Explain that the handouts will be cut apart and added to the Field Journal throughout the conference. Ask conferees to cut out the Cover, four inserts, and four compasses.
● Invite each conferee to glue the Cover on the front of the journal. ● Say: “Just like a compass has four points, we have four things to learn about today.
Each of our four points will coincide with the four directions on a compass: N for north, S for south, E for east, and W for west.”
● Guide each conferee to cut out the four compasses and glue one on the bottom of each pocket on the inside of the Field Journal.
● Say: “Now that our Field Journal is ready, let’s examine four items that are “Unknown to us.”
3. N is for Navigate (15 minutes)
● Comment: “The first thing we need to learn is how to Navigate our way around VBS.” ● Encourage conferees to print Navigate on the compass by N on the first pocket of their
Field Journal. ● Say: “First, let’s review the theme. Preschoolers are going off the map and it is up to us
to chart the territory. Thankfully, as we plan and prepare, we have a wonderful and trustworthy Guide to help us every step of the way. It’s Jesus. And if we listen to Him, He will make the path of preparing for VBS straight before us and help us know exactly which way to go.”
● Comment: “Let’s examine the Bible verse for the week to see how it will help us on our journey.”
● Distribute a pair of tongs to six volunteers. ● Invite each volunteer to find one brown flat rock around the room. ● Guide them to lift up the rock with the tongs to discover the words underneath. ● Ask volunteers to hold the rocks with the tongs and stand in order in the front of
the room. ● Guide conferees to say the Bible verse together. (God will help you know what to do.
Isaiah 30:21) ● Point out the Scripture Poster from the Visual Pack. ● Share how kids and preschoolers will use the same verse from Isaiah 30:21 for
the week. ● Invite conferees to stand and sing “God Will Help You Know What to Do” (track 1).
Teach the motions as directed on p. 51 in the 3s-Pre-K and Kindergarten Leader Guides.
● Share: “As we continue to prepare for VBS remember that God will help us plan, prepare, and teach preschoolers this year.”
● Say: “As we conclude the first point on our compass let’s review. What does N stand for?” (Navigate)

4. S is for Stories (15 minutes)
● Explain: “Now let’s move to our second compass point which is S for south. But today our letter S stands for Stories. Let’s take a look at the Bible stories for the week.”
● Encourage conferees to print Stories on the compass by the S on the second pocket of their Field Journal.
● Say: “During VBS, preschoolers will hear five Bible stories that will help them discover that the God who guided Daniel and his friends is the same God who sent His Son Jesus to be their Guide.”
● Invite five volunteers to stand at the front. ● Give each volunteer one VBS 2015 Kids Wrap and one VBS 2015 Cloth Drawstring Bag.
Invite the volunteers to wear the wrap any way they choose and to hold open the drawstring bag.
● Place the volunteers in order: ○ Day 1: yellow wrap ○ Day 2: blue wrap ○ Day 3: red wrap ○ Day 4: green wrap ○ Day 5: orange wrap
● Invite conferees to choose one of the items from the VBS 2015 Journey Off the Map Backpack, determine which day the item represents, and place the item in the appropriate day’s cloth drawstring bag.
● Play “Around the Bend” CD (track 5) as conferees fill the bags. ● Ask the five volunteers to remain standing as you pull each item out from the bags and
read them to the group: ○ Day 1
■ Know Your Guide (Expedition Tag) ■ Rock (Preschool Field Kit Marker) ■ Why Jesus Came ■ Jesus is God’s Son. He showed us how to live.
○ Day 2 ■ Follow Your Guide (Expedition Tag) ■ Canteen (Preschool Field Kit Marker) ■ Daniel Obeyed God ■ Daniel chose to obey God no matter what and is an example of how we
can do the things that are pleasing to God. ○ Day 3
■ Trust Your Guide (Expedition Tag) ■ Fire (Preschool Field Kit Marker) ■ Daniel’s Friends Obeyed God ■ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego loved God. They obeyed Him even
when it was difficult. We can obey God, too.
File 5 VBS 2015 JOTM Preschool Leadership 2-Hour Session
8
○ Day 4 ■ Stay on Track (Expedition Tag) ■ Lion (Preschool Field Kit Marker) ■ God Took Care of Daniel ■ No matter what happened to Daniel, he knew God would take care of
him. God will take care of us, too. ○ Day 5
■ Keep Watching (Expedition Tag) ■ Compass (Preschool Field Kit Marker) ■ God Always Cares ■ God always took care of Daniel. God promised He will take care of
us forever. ● Say: “VBS 2015 includes several Bible stories that are familiar to many preschoolers and
preschool teachers. There are also two Bible stories which are being used for the first time in VBS with preschoolers. We have taken great care to tell both Bible stories in such as way that the focus remains on the power of God to protect rather than the scary details of each situation. With Babies-2s, there is no mention of fire or furnace or a lion’s den whatsoever. Young children will simply hear that God always took care of Daniel and his friends and God will take care of them, too. 3-year-olds through rising 1st graders will come away seeing God clearly as the hero of these Bible stories. The focus is always on God, not on the scary situations. When you move beyond the first things that come to mind when you think of “the fiery furnace” or “Daniel in the lions’ den” Bible stories, you see the rich truths that are really the point of these stories.
○ God loves us (and sometimes demonstrates His love in dramatic ways—including sending His Son, Jesus).
○ God takes care of us (both now and forever). ○ God hears us when we talk to Him (pray). ○ God is trustworthy. ○ We can choose to obey God, no matter what.”
● Say: “As we conclude the second point on our compass let’s review. What does N stand
for?” (Navigate) “What does S stand for?” (Stories) 5. E is for Equipment (40 minutes)
● Comment: “Now that we know our Bible stories, let’s move to our third compass point, E, which stands for Equipment. We need to determine what Equipment we need to teach.”
● Encourage conferees to print Equipment on the compass by the E on the third pocket of their Field Journal.
● Explain: “There are four pieces of equipment or curriculum you will need.”

● Say: “Let’s discover where to find the fourth piece you need for VBS.” ● Invite five volunteers to find the five Bug Gliders around the room and stand next
to them. ● Ask two other volunteers to stand at the front of the room. Ask them to face each other,
hold hands, and use their arms to form a circle like a target.
● Ask the five volunteers to throw the bug gliders and try to make them fly through the arms of the conferees at the front.

6. W is for Work (20 minutes)
● Comment: “Finally let’s talk about our fourth and last compass point, W, which stands for Work. We can think of work in two ways: How does all of this ‘work’ together and to make VBS ‘work’ we will need to put in some ‘work.’”
● Encourage conferees to print Work on the compass by the W on the fourth pocket of their Field Journal.
● Invite six volunteers to find the six flowers around the room. Ask them to stand in order and read each petal aloud. Lead conferees to find the correct order on page 9 of the VBS 2015 Kindergarten Leader Guide.

File 5 VBS 2015 JOTM Preschool Leadership 2-Hour Session
13
○ Remember that you are the example of what God is like to a child. ■ Say: “You are the example for preschoolers. Preschoolers are always
watching and listening….even when you think they are not.” ● Hold hands up as if you are looking through binoculars. Ask
conferees to mimic your motion. ■ Comment: “Let’s look at other things we can know about the preschoolers
we teach.” ■ Preschoolers love repetition.
● March in place to show doing the same motion over and over. ■ Preschoolers are hands-on, experiential learners.
● Rub hands together to emphasize hands-on learning. ■ Preschoolers are still developing fine and gross motor skills.
● Tip toe and pretend to move vines in your path to emphasize both fine and gross motor skills.
■ Preschoolers are capable of internalizing and applying Bible truths. ● Hold hands in front of body like a book to represent the Bible.
● Invite the volunteers to return to their seats. ● Say: “As we conclude the final point on our compass let’s review all four points. What
does N stand for?” (Navigate) “What does S stand for?” (Stories) “What does E stand for?” (Equipment) “What does W stand for?” (Work)
7. Continue the Journey (10 minutes)
● Comment: “Now that we have filled up our Field Journal with notes and ideas, let’s talk about how we can continue the journey after VBS.”
● Ask conferees to choose a Connection Card from the bucket. ● Guide them to find the person with the other half of their statement. ● Ask the person with the first half of the statement to tape the card above the crepe paper

the week to greet new families. ○ Invite preschool Sunday school teachers to introduce themselves to parents
during check in and check out on the last day of VBS. ○ Provide parents with your church’s summer and fall preschool calendar. ○ Mail out two cards to each family. Send a thank you note to parents and a fun
postcard to preschoolers. ○ Plan a preschool event later in the summer that includes some of the
preschoolers’ favorite activities and games from Journey Off the Map. ○ Take a group picture of preschoolers. Place the pictures in a VBS 2015 Picture
Frame and deliver them to the preschooler’s home. ○ Personalize a few blank Map Markers for each child and ask them to add them to
their Preschool Field Kit.
File 5 VBS 2015 JOTM Preschool Leadership 2-Hour Session
14
○ Encourage families to listen to the Takin’ It Home Music for Preschoolers CD. ○ Encourage parents to download the VBS Family App.
● Ask conferees to share other ways they can continue the journey with preschoolers and their families after VBS.
8. Conclude the Journey (5 minutes)
● Say: “We have concluded our journey today for Journey Off the Map.” ● Encourage conferees to use the Field Journal notes and ideas as they prepare and plan
for VBS this year. ● Review how the Bible stories from VBS teach us that God has always been and will
always be with us. Remind conferees as they plan for VBS to remember that God will help them.
● Invite a volunteer to open a 3s-Pre-K or Kindergarten Leader Guide to page 14. Ask the volunteer to read the second paragraph from the Teacher Devotion aloud.
○ Life can be quite an adventure. But we are not expected to navigate life without a Guide. Jesus is our Guide, our Friend, and the ultimate example we should follow. Best of all, He is with us every step of the way! The week of VBS will be no different. The Holy Spirit already knows every child who will cross your path and He knows exactly what each one needs. He’s got it all under control, so relax, This is going to be fun!
● Close the session in prayer. Thank God for the conferees and for their willingness to follow their Guide during VBS.
● Play “Journey Off the Map” (track 1) as conferees leave.
