The Cup We Share This is the second in our series: Eucharist: Holy
Food for Holy People.
Wine is the second element that Jesus chose to use to give Himself to us as sustenance for our life in Him. A cup of wine was (and still is) part of the Jewish ritual of Passover. It is profoundly rich in meaning. There are in fact four cups that are shared by partici-pants. To appreciate the significance for us as Catho-lics I highly recommend you read Scott Hahn's book, The Fourth Cup, written from his perspective as a former evangelical who was amazed to find the mys-tery of the Eucharist in the gospel that he had read all his life. What I learned helped me as a priest and life-long Catholic to go deeper into this unique gift that is ours but holds so much more for us to savor!
A window into how the early church celebrated and understood the meaning of the Eucharist is found in the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians. See-ing sad divisions arising when Christians gathered to eat the Lord's supper, Paul returns to the words and actions of Jesus at his last supper: taking, blessing and breaking bread with the words "This is my body that is for you."And then Jesus taking the cup said:"This cup is the new covenant in my blood"and he re-peats his command: "Do this in remembrance of me..."(I Cor. 11:17ff) Paul warns strongly that "anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body , eats and drinks judgment on himself."
The image of the chalice you see here is a window from the convent chapel at Saint John's. It was one of a few I found in the cellar of what is now our parish office and thrift store building. When I created a small chapel in our rectory it found its perfect place behind the tabernacle con-
taining the Body of Christ. Seeing it daily in prayer reminds me of the sacred ministry of priests who are privileged to drink the cup of his Blood so often. We have always done this for you.
And then one day we began to drink it with you. The instruction in our Missal makes clear why it would be appropriate to offer the chalice to all. "Holy Com-munion has a fuller form as a sign when it takes place under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clearer expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord, as also the connection between the Eucharistic banquet and the eschatological ban-quet in the Kingdom of the Father "(GIRM 281).
The GIRM is very careful to assure us that to receive the Eucharist in only in one form (bread or wine) is to receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus. It insists on the authority of bishops to deter-mine when and how Holy Communion may be re-ceived under both kinds. Sadly we face today a situa-tion where the pandemic restricts many aspects of our celebration of the Eucharist. Hence to avoid con-tagion, only the priest drinks from the chalice, and each priest must drink only from his own!
My goal in writing to you about the Eucharist this year is to help you encounter the risen Jesus more deeply and participate in Mass more fully. So we might ask ourselves what "the cup of His blood" meant for him and means for us. It takes us back to the agonizing prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane when Jesus asks the Father to take away the cup of suffer-ing on Calvary, the cup he drank ultimately as the will of God. His was to be the blood of the perfect sacrificial lamb, slain to take away the sins of the world. For us the privilege of drinking the Precious Blood from the chalice is an invitation to follow Je-sus in being willing to accept whatever pain lies in store for us when we do the will of God. What physi-cal or emotional suffering are you bearing at this mo-ment? Or is your cup one of economic hardship. Or is it spiritual in nature such as a loss of peace and confidence about our future or a crisis in the family or in our country as we have seen. Yet wine is also meant to make us happy, something we use to cele-brate. As the miracle at Cana hints at, the new wine given by the Lord is foretaste of the cup of joy at the wedding feast of the Lamb to come! May we thirst for the day when we will drink it fully in the King-dom of Heaven. God bless. Fr. John

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 28, 2020

The Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist: Basic Questions and Answers
Do the consecrated bread and wine cease to be the Body and Blood of Christ when the Mass is over?
No. During the celebration of the Eucharist, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, and this they remain. They cannot turn back into bread and wine, for they are no longer bread and wine at all. There is thus no reason for them to change back to their "normal" state after the special circumstances of the Mass are past. Once the substance has really changed, the presence of the Body and Blood of Christ "endures as long as the Eu-charistic species subsist" ( Catechism, no. 1377). Against those who maintained that the bread that is consecrated during the Eucharist has no sanctifying power if it is left over until the next day, St. Cyril of Alexandria replied, "Christ is not altered, nor is his holy body changed, but the power of the consecration and his life-giving grace is perpetual in it" ( Letter 83, to Calosyrius, Bishop of Arsi-noe [ PG 76, 1076]). The Church teaches that Christ re-mains present under the appearances of bread and wine as long as the appearances of bread and wine remain (cf. Catechism, no. 1377).

If you missed the 1st in the 5 part talk series to begin
The Year of the Eucharist with Seminarian Joe Ferme,
included on this page are some highlights from the talk Joe wanted to share. Thank You and Enjoy!
“One of the hymns wri en by St. Thomas for Corpus Chris is called the
Pange Lingua Gloriosi. It’s a beau ful hymn, o en sung on Holy Thursday. We heard it here this past Sunday. The nal
two stanzas are o en sung at the end of a me of Eucharis c Adora on. That part
begins with Tantum ergo. Within that part we hear these words: “Praestet fidessupplementum / Sensuum defectui.”
Faith supplies the supplement for the defect of the senses. We admit that our
senses fail here, that we need faith before the mystery.”
“And while we might not be able to provide what the non-believer is looking for – that is empirical proof in the form of scientific data – belief in the Eucharist is far from some immature and irration-
al belief. In fact, we can say that the one with faith is open to a whole realm of truths that are inaccessible to the one who limits himself by the
confines of physical science”
“Ultimately, our response must be to humble ourselves in faith before the mystery. We humble
ourselves because it is a mystery, and we can’t fully understand it. We wonder, we marvel, we adore, we give thanks. But we also have faith,
and faith wants to go deeper, to know. Pope St. John Paul II wrote an encyclical on faith
and reason, and he uses these two phrases: I believe that I may understand, and I understand
that I may believe. Faith does not mean we stop thinking, nor does thinking rationally mean
we do not have faith.”
“So, while there are things we can say about the mysteries, there will always be more to learn; we will never fully comprehend. And what could be
more interesting than that? Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
That statement is an endless fount. We can spend our entire lives plumbing its depths. We’re called not to dismiss this as some medieval superstition,
but we are also not called, on the other hand, to try and perfectly understand it. Rather, we’re called to humble ourselves in faith before the mystery, while growing in our understanding, always knowing that
there will be more.”
“Just as Bartimaeus asked for that gift of sight, so too are we called to ask
God for the gift of faith – for a deepen-ing and strengthening of faith in
our own life, and the spread of faith. And we can be instruments in that spreading, we can witness to Our
Eucharistic Lord. When Bartimaeus called out, we read that “many rebuked
him, telling him to be silent.” Many might say the same thing to us: “Keep your faith to yourself; that’s all supersti-
tion anyway; isn’t that belief a little old-school, a little outlandish?” “but he cried out all the more.” This year calls
us to enter more deeply into the mystery ourselves, and to beckon
others to join us – to join us in a loving relationship with the Eucharistic
Jesus. In many ways, if we want to accomplish our goals for this Year of the Eucharist, we just have call upon Jesus, and follow Him, as we heard Bartimaeus did after he received his
sight. This Year provides all of us in the Archdiocese with the chance to turn to Him more intentionally, to ponder anew the mystery of the Eucharist, to enter
into a more intimate and personal relationship with Our Good God. In
other words, Christ is passing by this year. We pray for the grace to follow Him…He will lead us to great things.”

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 28, 2020
Although I grew up a cradle Catholic, the faith never really became personal for me until late in high school, and then especially in college during my senior year. I was invited on a retreat put on by the Boston University Newman Center, and it changed
my life. Not in the sense that I was a completely changed person, but after that retreat my life had a new direction. I began learning more about the Faith, going to Mass throughout the week, and praying in Eucharistic Adora-tion. Eventually, following a vocations retreat, I began to discern the priesthood. I like to describe my prayer chang-ing at a certain point from asking God what He wanted, in an inquisitive sort of way, to actually hoping that He was calling me to the priesthood. God works through our good desires. Through the witness of good and joyful priests and through living the Christian life with friends, I eventually came to desire to the priesthood, and by God’s grace I am on the way to the fulfillment of that desire. -Joe Ferme
I have heard God's call little by little from the beginning of my life. My parents taught me to pray at a very young age, and I do not remember a time when I didn't have a love for the Bible and for my faith. The high-light of my week was being in church and
going to worship services, and my friends in middle school pointed out to me on retreat how much they appreciated that I was so willing to pray for them and with them. I re-quested baptism at the age of twelve, and it meant so much to me that I even wrote a poem about it and read it to my English class! As I entered high school and college, my search for God in faith reached a new stage and I came to have a great love for regular prayer with the Psalms. It was after I had finished college and started working that I dis-covered the Catholic faith and the Catholic Church; and as I learned what God wanted to give me, I wanted to receive it. Not long after that, I was received into the Catholic Church and confirmed. I loved going to Mass daily, and eventually my parish priest asked me if I had ever thought about becoming a priest myself. With his help, I found my way to the seminary; and now, after my third year, the sem-inary has sent me to Peabody, and I am so very glad to be a part of the community here! -Jeremy Wagner
When I started college, I had the next 50 years of my life planned out. I was going to go to medical school, become a great doctor, save lives, have a wonderful wife and family, and enjoy an amazing life. But, God was inviting me to accept something far
greater than I could have ever imagined. There came a point where I started to ask God what His plan for my life was, rather than blindly following my own. He created me, after all. After some time, He made it abundantly clear that He was calling me to be His priest. He showed me that this was what He created me for and that my ultimate fulfillment would come in being His priest. Upon hearing that call, I couldn't think of doing anything else. I stopped my medical school application and focused entirely on my application to seminary. Following God's call was one of the best decisions I have ever made and I have never been happier. -Deacon Denis Nakkeeran
I can say that I can trace my call to priest-hood all the way back to my youngest years. My Grandma and Grandpa Zinger used to have Sunday dinner at their house and often the parish priests would be invited to come over and join us. In those encounters I had
with them somehow God sewed the seeds of a priestly vo-cation in my heart because as a boy that is always what I wanted to be. I grew up and our Catholic religion and faith was always a very important part of our lives. I was an or-dinary American kid. But, in God’s time he let me know when I should enter the seminary and now in just a few weeks I will be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston. Serving the Lord is always a joy! -Deacon Dan
