two pen recorders
DESCRIPTION
Two Pen RecordersTRANSCRIPT
Two Pen Recorders • Two pen recorders permit
monitoring of two independent processes with one recorder.
• A variety of input signal types, together with wide availability and ease of use make these recorders ideal monitoring devices for lower accuracy environments.
• The recorders are very reliable and are accurate enough for most operations. This type of recorder is suited for measurement of pressures, time, temperature, force, fluid levels, pH and other signals.

What is a data/chart recorder?
• A data/chart recorder is an electronic
instrument that keeps track of measurements
required in a process or production. It may
record variables such as pressure,
temperature, pH or other variables.
• There are many types of data recorder
models on the market that use paper and a
pen to measure single or multiple inputs. ,
• High end models can record up to 30 inputs.

Types of Data or Chart Recorders
• Strip Chart Recorders - have a roll of paper that passes continuously beneath one or more pens. They are well suited to continuous processes.
• Circular Chart Recorders – a circular chart rotates counter clockwise under one or more pens that deflect according to an electrical signal.
• X-Y Recorders - These accept two inputs and create a graph that displays activity of one data set against another. Very useful for determining relationships between two data inputs.
• Hybrid Recorders - can function as a recorder and a data logger. The input may be routed to an analog-to-digital converter.

The Older Chart Recorders -
• The following slides are for the older style of recorders that are still in wide use.

Pressure Measurement
• Static pressure measurement is via a helical
bourdon tube connected to system piping.
Range is 0 to 30 inches of mercury on
vacuum (30” Hg = 1 atmosphere or 14.7
psia)., and 0 to 8000 psig (1 to 545 atm).

Trouble Shooting – Depends on
the Model Indication Explanation
The LED is blinking on & off, but the
temperature is correct
The unit is running on battery.
There is a 4-hour difference from red
pen & blue pen, which pen is used as
time mark?
There is a difference w/ any two pen
recorder Designate one pen as a time mark.
What is the type of sensor wire? Solid state temperature sensing device is
used. Older units used type "J"
thermocouple wire.
Can additional internal adjustments
be made?
No, all adjustments are on the front of the
unit. All calibrations must be done @ the
factory or the warranty will be voided.
Which direction does chart rotate? CCW
What is response time? 2 - 3 samples per second typical

Pen Replacement
Open the case and after removing the old pens, replace with the correct part. The pens may need to be zeroed before use.

The Settings – What and How
to Calibrate
• Pressure Recording – what are the maximum
and minimum ranges of pressure. How fast
does the sampling rate need to be? A two-
pen recorder will only record from 1 to 3
measurements per second at maximum. Line
width may also be an issue.

Reading the Chart
1. Range of the chart must be matched to the input to get accurate readings.
2. Pens must be homed or zeroed with calibration to start on the graph.
3. Charts turn CCW.
4. Extremes of pen movement (off scale) can produce ghosts on the paper – check the range settings.
5. Check the time drive setting. 8/25/2015 13
