Two Simple Passing Packages for the Double Wing

By Jeff Cziska

I once ha a player ask me why we i not pass the ball more! "e#er one to ebate with my players I

simply tol him that we passe on nearly e#ery own! $ey% the ball is snappe an you &pass' the ball to

the Wingback on nearly e#ery own! Then I walke away! "ow years later I ask myself why inee owe not pass the ball more(

When can we fin the practice time to implement a consistent passing game( To run any offense

effecti#ely you nee practice time! $owe#er% we can o a lot with little time if there is easy to follow set of

rules! The beauty of the Double Wing when run properly is that rules make it much easier to learn the

offense! )epetition buils familiarity an familiarity buils the machine! The less a player has to think the

more likely they will be able to fire off the line at full spee an estroy the efense!

$ow coul we make it easy with limite practice time( Well% I remember putting in the Double Wing in

two one hour sessions at Bishop Stang! It was easy to o because of simplicity! The line was gi#en

blocking rules an it co#ere all of their assignments! In those two hours we put in Power% Power

opposite of motion *easy Counter play+% Iso% Belly Down *, for some of you+% Wege an a -loo Pass!.aking it more impressi#e was the fact that they ha been running the Sprea for o#er a season! The

players took to the offense immeiately an it ene up being the most effecti#e offense they ran that

season! -urthermore% the aggressi#e nature of the offense trickle o#er to the efensi#e sie of the ball

creating much tougher players!

So in orer to implement an effecti#e passing game that the efense woul be force to respect it woul

nee to be simple% rules/base an not take up a lot of practice time! The simplest an most effecti#e

passing game I knew was from my Wing/T brethren! I learne it from Bruce Cobleigh% a retire $ea

Coach from ,eorgia% who o#er his last ten seasons a#erage 0%122 yars per season with 3%122 of those

yars coming #ia the passing game! .aking it all e#en more impressi#e was the fact that his teams i

this playing 44444 football% winning numerous championships! I was still on the fence until I saw

DeWayne 4le5aner running it at Cumberlan 6ni#ersity! I showe a little rawing on a notepa to Bruceof the Double Wing an aske if it woul be possible to run any of this passing stuff! $e simply tol me

that it coul be run from any formation incluing empty! Just follow the rules!

So% it has become a simple task of taking the rules an following them! Just as players in the Double

Wing ha#e rules to block any front7 it woul not be a tough transition for the players to learn the rules for

an effecti#e passing game!

-irst we ha#e the Crossing )oute package! Staying in line with the Double Wing philosophy% a few simple

rules a up to a efensi#e nightmare!
