Dear Friends, What a busy, interesting summer it’s been! Alan and I enjoyed some time away and are now gearing up for the busy fall schedule. Please look at the enclosed “Education Opportunities” brochure and pray about ways God may be calling you and your family to learn more about God’s word! Sometimes I hear people say they are “afraid” to come to Bible study because they don’t want to look “stupid” because they aren’t very familiar with the Bible. We have people in these adult classes who have widely varying backgrounds in their knowledge of the Bible. How can you increase your knowledge of the Bible if you don’t take the time to learn more about the Bible? Please come and join us – we’d love to have you there! In addition to the startup of our education opportunities, please seriously consider coming to the DreamLeader’s weekend here at All Saints. We are excited to have Pr. Jeff Linman come on Saturday, Sept. 15 for a free workshop from 9-3 here at the church (lunch is included). Pr. Linman will preach and share with us the learnings from the previous day on Sunday, Sept. 16th. God is certainly working here at All Saints – it will be good to get an opportunity to dream about our future and put into action some of those dreams! Please read the article about this elsewhere in this newsletter. As you can see, there are many opportunities to continue to grow in our faith. Learning never stops! In addition, these opportunities are a great way to get to know some more folks from All Saints Lutheran. Please prayerfully consider joining us for one or more of these occasions!

In Christ,

Pastor Janet Wold

Have a New Neighbor? If someone new moves into your neighborhood, we would like to invite them to worship with us at All Saints. You can help by talking to your new neighbor yourself, or by giving their name, if you know it, and their address to the church office, Pastor Janet, or Pam Kultgen. The Outreach committee is working hard to bring God’s Word and an invitation to join us at All Saints to our neighbors in our community.

All Saints Serves Meals on Wheels in October-Volunteer Drivers Needed In the month of October, All Saints Church will be helping LifeScape deliver Meals on Wheels to our special friends that live in and around the Byron area. Volunteers meet with the LifeScape driver at Generations at Neighbors Rehab Center at approximately 12:15 pm. Volunteers are provided with the meals and a daily roadmap as we set out on our adventure in delivering the meals. It takes approximately a half-hour to deliver an average of three to four meals daily. If you are interested in taking part in this worthwhile activity and can spare an hour of your time, contact Pam Kultgen at [email protected] or call at 815-985-1948.

Support All Saints While You Shop Now you can support All Saints by shopping at smile.amazon.com. Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to All Saints Lutheran Church whenever you shop on AmazonSmile. Click the AmazonSmile link on AllSaintsByron.org to go directly to the products - same prices, same service. Thank you!

2019 Budget The Finance Committee will be asking for budget input for 2019 from All Saints committees starting in September. Committees will receive a letter with a copy of the 2018 budget, current 2018 spending to date, and some prior year financial data to review so they can assess and make their input. We have gotten pretty good at budgeting to our needs. We do not have a lot of fluff or extras built into our budgets. We try to be realistic in estimating what we have spent and where we will go in the next year with our mission and ministries. Thanks to all who support this process!

Special THANK YOU!

Thank you to all of our volunteers who watered the flowers and hanging baskets this summer. With the hot and humid weather, your diligence assured the flowers remained bright and beautiful all season!

Thank you to all of our volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to assure the church lawn is mowed for our Sunday Worship. The property looks so beautiful and inviting each week!

Thank you to ALL who contributed to Gifts for Mission on Generosity Sunday in May. The Synod is thrilled to announce they received approximately $54,000 from all participating churches.

With summer ending and cooler days and evenings arriving, it's a great time of the year to sit in the shade and enjoy a book. These three large print books will be on the cart near the entrance of the church this month.

Hot Flashes and Cold Cream (Large Print) by Diann Hunt is a funny and honest look at a 50ish menopausal woman with "a leaky Chihuahua, a body going south, and a workaholic husband with a gorgeous new colleague" who is pushed over the edge when a good friend doesn't recognize her.

A Reluctant Queen, The Love Story of Esther (Large Print) by Joan Wolf is Biblical fiction - a fictionalization of the romance between Esther and Ahasuerus, not to be confused with the Biblical account in the book of Esther. The author explains on pages 435- 437: "Where the Bible story and the novel come together is in the underlying premise. God has a plan for the world, and He works His plan through the actions of humans. Will we allow God to work through us?"

Critical Care (Large Print) by Candace Calvert - Nurse Claire can't face the ER after her fireman brother dies in a trauma room from fighting a fire. Her plan of a new career in nursing education in a new hospital backfires when she is called to offer stress counseling to the ER staff after a propane explosion at a day care center and her clashes with a doctor who believes touchy-feely counseling is a waste of time.

Also being entered to the library are:

On This Foundation, The Restoration Chronicles by Lynn Austin is the third and concluding novel of the series. When news reaches Nehemiah that the wall of Jerusalem has been broken and its gates burned, he fasts and prays for God's guidance. He is granted a leave from his duties to rebuild the city wall. However, he never anticipated the dangers ahead including an assassination attempt and drought.

Eve's Daughters by Lynn Austin - For five decades Emma Bauer has kept a secret that has haunted her life and the lives of her daughters and granddaughter. When she sees her granddaughter's marriage begin to unravel, she hopes it's not too late to right all the wrongs and let the healing power of truth work in her family.

Quilters

The quilters plan to meet on September 6th from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church. September is typically our busiest month as the time gets closer to sending quilts off to Lutheran World Relief. We plan to display the quilts in the sanctuary later in the month before they are packed, labeled and taken to Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. From that point the boxes will be taken to New Jersey where they will be unpacked and the quilts will be put into huge bundles to go to disaster areas where needed all over the world. Our closet is overflowing with lovely quilts waiting to be given to someone in need. Please join us on the first Thursday of any month as we work together and have Christian fellowship.

OUTREACH

As many of you know, our church along with most churches in Byron contribute to the St. Vincent dePaul fund at St. Mary’s church. The fund helps anyone in several northern Illinois counties with financial difficulties whether they are Lutheran, Catholic or no religion at all. If you have a need, they are available to help financially and/or steer you to the right local agency that can help you. We used to raise funds during our yearly picnic to provide our share of this worthy endeavor, but the church council decided last year to find other ways to fund our participation and allow our church picnic to be just that, a picnic for All Saints and the community. To support the St Vincent dePaul fundraising effort, we are encouraging all who are able to participate in their “Walk for the Poor” on Saturday, September 29, at 9 am starting from St. Mary’s church. Registration forms and pledge forms will be available on the table in the narthex if you are interested in participating. We are also going to hold a quilt raffle during the month of September here at All Saints. More information will be forthcoming in the weekly bulletin. Please see Pam Kultgen for additional information.

Book Club

September's Book Club selection is The Elevator by Angela Hunt. Three very different women are trapped between floors of an elevator in an office building. Each of them has a secret that unbeknown to them involves the same man. A hurricane is coming, the building has been evacuated, and they have to work together to find a way to safety. Join us September 24 at 1:00 pm as we delve into the lives of these women and their secrets and see if they have the courage and faith to fight for their lives. Everyone is welcome to come to any or all of the book discussions. Some read the book from their Kindle or Nook, but a copy of the book is passed around each month. If you'd like to be added to that list for all or for a particular book, let me know at [email protected] or 815-298-0449.
