Under the Transportation Code, TxDOT utilizes the manual, “Procedures for Establishing Speed Zones”
Speed zones set based on Spot Speed Studies and the 85th percentile operating speed
Items Considered:Horizontal and vertical curvesDeveloped areas
Speed Check Stations:Off-peak hoursGood weatherFor each direction, capture 125 “free floating” vehicles, or two hours,
whichever comes firstIf enforcement in place or anytime during the study, data not consideredEnforcement at one station will not affect overall speed zone of corridor
