Benefits of Technology Transfer

• Attracts research funding

• Forms industrially relevantpartnerships

• Earns royalty income – NREL staffreceive 25% of all royalties.

• Moves discovery to market

• Creates U.S. Jobs

7

Role of Intellectual Property inResearch

7

• Tools of commerce, not ameasure of good science.

• Provides incentives:

• For private investment in productdevelopment.

• For research staff to disclose theirinnovations.

• Establishes ownership ininvention.

• A means to communicate thevalue of research at nationallabs.

Skyfuel - SkyTrough parabolictrough

• SkyTrough and the steam itproduces match up particularlywell with certain natural gascombined cycle power plants; acombination referred to asintegrated solar combined cycle or “ISCC”

• When a host plant uses solargenerated steam to displacenatural gas fired steam, it saveson fuel costs and cuts emissionsof CO2 and other harmfulpollutants

• Concentrating solar collectors captureand concentrate solar radiation toproduce thermal energy, usually assteam, for use in large power plants

• Ideally suited for delivering heat orsteam to industrial, mining andmanufacturing processes as well aswaste-water treatment anddesalination

• SkyTrough can also be used to heatwater for large commercial orinstitutional facilities such as prisonsand hospitals which require largevolumes of hot water

B-Si Patent Portfolio has grown:• 07-10: US 8,075,792• 09-69: US 8,828,765• 12-18: US 8,815,104• Issued Patents in China and Japan

Reduce Costs & Test Feasibility in Real WorldEnvironment:• Demonstrated successful etch using Copper (NREL 12-18)

at $20/oz t as opposed to Gold ($3,000/oz t) and Silver($1,000/oz t).

• Partnership with Fraunhofer Institute successfullydemonstrated B-Si process at scale in Chinese PVmanufacturing facility with 40% longer charge carrier

lifetime (greater efficiency).• Exploring alternative passivation techniques that may

require broadening the Licensed FOU to include atomiclayer deposition.
