der narkose geplaas tydens die operasie.“Die pyn was verskriklik.

“Die kind se ma was al by ons.

Sommige ti-telaktes gaan sover terug as 30 jaar.

. ongetekende verkoopsooreenkomste;

. begunstigdes wat nie opgespoor kanword nie;

. onvolledige aansoeke;

. regsprobleme oor eienaarskap;

. hersoneringsprobleme;

. onbetaalde lenings deur begunstigdes;

Skaapskeer“Dit is nou ware stories, liegstories,

Oom Goltros het ook plegtig belowe:“Niggietjie, oompie sal darem ok so tweerielstêpsietjies maak want my ou kniege is

Voorwaar ’n lekker, lekker ervaring!

Bobbi Johaan afge-sluit. “Druk die lewe jou in ‘blik? Is jy volstres enklaagliedere? Toegang is R75 perpersoon. No baby born at Karl Bremer Hospitalthis winter will go cold, not if localgrandmother Allyson Swanepoel and

a group of dedicated knitters from across thenorthern suburbs can help it.

About a month ago Allyson, after hearingof the plight of needy mothers at this hospi-tal, ferociously started knitting beanies andbooties for newborn and premature babies.Within a few weeks she had single-handedlycompleted and donated 40 sets.

About 80% of all the babies born at thishospital have no clothing to be sent home inat all and the maternity ward is completelydependent on donations from the public, Al-

lyson told TygerBurger.

Huge needSister Karlien Fourie at the hospital’s ma-

ternity ward confirmed this, saying manymothers book into the hospital with nothingbut the clothes they’re wearing.

“About 500 babies are born here everymonth and they all need warm clothing.Some of the mothers don’t even have pyja-mas or underwear, not to mention babyclothing, blankets, maternity underwear orsanitary wear.

“The need is huge and what Allyson hasdone forus and every little babyhere is noth-ing short of astonishing. She is a real angel,”Fourie toldTygerBurger during a visit to thehospital last week.

Kangaroo careBut, it is especially the premature babies

who need these beanies and booties themost.

Fourie explains: “We currently have 20premature babies in a special ward wheretheir mothers care for them using KangarooMothering Care. This method, known asKMC,wasdeveloped in the 1980s and iswide-spread today as it gives the premature babythe best possible chance at life,” she says.

This method is employed by nestling thelittle baby skin-on-skin on the mother’sbody, between her breasts day and night, in-stead of using an incubator.

“Skin contact is needed and therefore thebaby is completely naked except for a beanieand booties, which is critical as they losebody heat through their heads and feet,” shesays.

“Awomanhas anatural heat regulator sit-uated in her body between her breasts,which will keep the baby warm or cool asneeded. The baby is so situated that themother touches its head with her chin andthe moment the baby’s body temperaturefalls, the mother’s body will start heating upto keep the baby warm, or start shivering tocool the baby down if he gets to warm. Thisis Mother Nature at work, no incubator inthe world can do this,” she explains.

The challenge, however, is keeping thebeanie and booty stock intake up.

“We have 20 babies in the ward at any giv-en time and most of these mothers do nothave their own beanies and booties. Theystay here for a month or more during whichtime the beanies stretch as they grow, sothere is always a need for them,” she says.

Over the moonAlthough Allyson started this project on

her own she was joined by about 54 otherkeen knitters after TygerBurger publishedan article about her endeavour a month ago.

“Women from Kraaifontein, Brackenfell,Goodwood and even as far as Elsies Riverstarted knitting and together we alreadycompleted 146 sets in only four weeks. Even

a woman living in George heard of theproject and is now starting a knitting clubover there.

“A sock company in Brackenfell donateda huge box full of baby socks! I am over themoon but could do with more wool though.

“Iwant to thank each and every single per-son who became involved in this project andwant to now extend it to the southern sub-urbs. Winter is near and every pair of handswill make a difference,” she says.V To get involved contact Allyson on 082 979 5590or to donate anything to the ward contact sister Fourie at [email protected].

Saturday saw senior athletes undergoingtheir final preparations for this comingweekend’s Western Province Track andField Championships.

With Bellville Stadium finally off thecompetition list, the athletes prepared atParow Track, where the championshipwill be hosted.

The WPA League three was severelyhampered by a faulty starter’s pistol,which tested the patience of even the star-ter himself. In the 110m hurdles for men,

Antonio Alkana was unfazed by the neardozen recalls, clocking a win in a solid14.15s. He will definitely be the one to beat.

Roscoe Engel, WP champion in the 100mfor the past couple of years, will be runningwith a huge target on his back, with Alkanaedging ever closer to him in each race. The100m for men showed just how close it willbe with Engel taking it in 10.43s to Alkana’s10.44.

With the likes of Brent Stevens, Yusuf Is-mail, Rodwell Ndlovu and the young Kyle

Appel all talented enough to make the final,it should be a showdown of note. They alltake the battle to the men’s 200m, just incase you missed the first run.

The men’s 800m is regaining the excite-ment of the 1990’s with numerous men ed-ging closer to the 1min50s mark. The win-ner at the championships will definitelyhave his work cut out. Local lad Duran Fa-ro, who can often be seen running thestreets of Parow, will have his eye on the800m and 1500m double. He will have to

contend with the likes of Sibusisu Magwa-za and Anthony Timotius though.

Sonja van der Merwe, as always, appearsunstoppable and will be the favourite in the200m and 400m, but can she take the 100mtitle too? She has done it before.

The championships start tomorrow(Thursday) at 17:00 with the multi eventsand 10 000m, and culminates on Saturday,when most of the finals will take place.

Contact the WPA Office at 021 699 0615 forfurther details.

Dieafskoptyd is 16:00.
