CWA focuses mainly on the empowerment of women and assists abused women and children. Speaking to TygerBurger during their lunch, varsity dean Sandra Edmonds Crewe, head of the university’s School of Social Work, said students came to South Africa to learn more about the country, but in so doing they have also learned more about themselves and how they can become better social workers one day. Six principles “We have something called the black per- spective and it has six principles of social work,” Crewe explained. One of these principles, she said, is inter- nationalisation. “They are now able to understand what it means to be a social worker, to understand the global context. “When they go back home and they are fa- cing substance abuse they are able to think; this is not just this client, it’s a global condi- tion. “They are able to think of social work practice not in isolation, but in context of the globe,” Crewe added. SOCIAL WORK: STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT LOCAL CONCERNS

    USA visits Eerste River

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

    A

    group of American university stu-

dents visited a local Eerste River NGO

recently where they were taught more

about the work done in the crime ridden

    community.

The annual visit by Howard University

    students to theNGOCommunityWomenAc-

tion (CWA) in Van Riebeeck Road, Devon

Park over the past six years has become a

    highlight on the organisations calendar.

During their visit on Friday, students were

entertained by amarimba band and dancers

while being treated to a three-course meal.

    CWA focusesmainly on the empowerment

of women and assists abused women and

    children.

    Speaking to TygerBurger during their

    lunch, varsity deanSandraEdmondsCrewe,

head of the universitys School of Social

Work, said students came to South Africa to

learn more about the country, but in so

doing they have also learned more about

themselves and how they can become better

    social workers one day.

    Six principles

We have something called the black per-

spective and it has six principles of social

    work, Crewe explained.

One of these principles, she said, is inter-

    nationalisation.

They are now able to understand what it

means to be a social worker, to understand

    the global context.

When they go back home and they are fa-

    cing substance abuse they are able to think;

this is not just this client, its a global condi-

    tion.

They are able to think of social work

practicenot in isolation, but in context of the

    globe, Crewe added.

She said their six areas of practice include

working with older people, child welfare,

    mental health, displaced populations, crimi-

    nal justice and health.

Our students are able to see all of the ele-

ments of social practice come together in

    this country.

They see it in our country too, but to un-

    derstand theglobal dimension,wecannot re-

    place that, Crewe said.

On their return to the US the students are

tasked with collecting money for program-

mes back in South Africa which they think

    make a difference.

They bring thatmoney back.We call that

    paying it forward.

    Paying it forward

We are not only here to receive, but we

also give back to the community.

Crewe explained that students visit the sa-

me institutions eachyear, but also addanew

one to their itinerary on each visit to South

    Africa.

This year we have added Sweat which is

an organisation focused on meeting the

needs of sex workers. Students are able to

think about human sexuality and human

rights in the context of sex workers, Crewe

    said.

The group also visit organisations that de-

al with poverty. Their visits include trips to

the CWA, Teen Challenge in Melton Rose,

the Ark of the Refuge along Old Faure Road

and the Western Cape department of social

    development.

    nisations.

The group also went back to some of the

organisations to take part in a day of service.

A banquetwas held at the Ritz Hotel in Ca-

pe Town hosted by the university to thank

    the different organisations and role-players

    involved.

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

    The Independent Police Investigative Di-

rectorate (IPID) this week confirmed it is

investigating a shooting incident that oc-

curred at the house of a police official in

    Vredelust, Kuils River.

The incident which rocked the quiet

    community occurred in Aloe Street.

It is alleged that on Monday 16 March

at about 15:17 a police sergeant was at

homewhen he heard a noise coming from

    the lounge.

He went out of the bedroom to investi-

gate and saw that an unknown male had

broken into his house and was in the

lounge. He also noticed four othermen in-

    side the yard, IPIDnational spokesperson

    Moses Dlamini said.

    Warning shot

The sergeant, a member of the tactical

response unit, allegedly fired a warning

shot at the man inside the house after

which all of the intruders ran out of the

    yard.

The sergeant ran after them and he

fired four shots at the fleeing suspects,

    Dlamini said.

One was fatally wounded and died in

the next street. An ambulance was called

out but he was declared dead on the

    scene, Dlamini explained.

He said five cartridges were recovered.

It is alleged the fleeing suspects left the

vehicle they were driving in, a Chrysler

    Voyager, in the policemans driveway.

The deceased has not yet been identi-

    fied.

An inquest docket has been opened.

No arrest has been made. The investi-

    gation continues, Dlamini said.

    Residents TygerBurger spoke to said

the area was completely cordoned off.

Some of the people who were nearby

said they heard several shots go off, one

    resident said.

One of them jumped over a wall onto a

vacant plot and collapsed in the next

street where he died, the person said,

speaking on the basis of anonymity.

    Died on the scene

The police were on the scene until after

    19:00 that day.

News of the incident was also widely

    discussedon socialmediapages.One resi-

    dent commented on Facebook, saying

therewere a lot of police and people in the

street. This cannot just be a housebreak-

    ing, she said.

Another person wrote: One of our

homeowners was in his house while the

crowbar gang tried to break in on Aloe

Street. Needless to say he walked into a

firearm and died on the scene. The others

left in a hurry, leaving their vehicle and

    the deceased behind.

Colonel Pieter Galant, Kuils River po-

lice station commander, confirmed the in-

    cident.

Galants version of the attack corre-

sponds with that of Dlamini. He did, how-

ever, add that the vehicle which was left

    behind was reported stolen.

Kuils River police are investigating the

murder of a 18-year-old teenager who was

allegedly stabbed twice by a minor.

The suspect, a 17-year-old high school le-

arner, allegedly ran out of the schools pre-

mises in order to catch his victim and stab

    him.

The deceased, Lorenzo vanWyk from Lu-

pin Street, Sarepta, was outside Sarepta

High school waiting for his nephew on Tu-

esday last weekwhen he was stabbed in the

upper shoulder on the left side of his body

    and in the back.

    Police spokespersonWarrant Officer An-

nacletta Mothoalo said the attack occurred

around 14:45 near the entrance to the school

    the suspect is attending.

The victim came to pick up his nephew

at the school. However, when the suspect

    sawhimheran towards thevictimandstab-

bed him twice, Mothoalo, who was at the

    scene of the crime, said.

An ambulance servicewas called out. Ho-

wever, Lorenzo died soon after the attack.

We confiscated a butcher knife, Motho-

    alo said.

She said the juvenile suspect has an exis-

ting pending case of assault with intent to

do grievous bodily harm against him.

It is unclear what the motive for the kil-

    ling was.

Mothoalo said the victim was not part of

a gang but TygerBurger learnt from a relia-

ble source the attack could have been out

    of retaliation.

    A murder case was opened.

Mothoalo said the suspect will be evalua-

    ted by a social worker.

He appeared in court last week.

The cluster comprises three police sta-

tions; Kuils River, Mfuleni and Klein-

Speaking on behalf of the cluster,War-

    rant Officer Annacletta Mothoalo, said

several houses were searched for drugs

and selling alcohol without a license last

    week.

Different types of drugs including tik,

dagga and mandrax tablets were confis-

cated from drug outlets and some direc-

tly from the suspects who were arre-

    sted, Mothoalo said.

She said the street value of the confis-

cated drugs amounted to R2 million.

Mothoalo said 256 suspects were arre-

sted for different crimes ranging from

    murder, assault, kidnapping anddealing

    Peak hour

    road rage

    relief for

    Kuils River

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

It took a petition with more than 2 500 sig-

natures to get the Citys attention, but it

worked and the endless frustrating hours

on the congested roads of Kuils River will

be a thing of the past in a couple ofmonths

    time.

In a statement issued on Friday last

week, the City of Cape Town said the R20

million much needed upgrade of Aman-

del Road between Bottelary River and Bot-

telary Road which runs past Amandelrug,

Brandwag and Soneike will start this

    week.

TheCity said the project seeks to address

the current congestion levels in the area.

A petition entitled, Stop the Kuils River

    Gridlocked,was drawnup earlier this year

in an attempt to get the municipality to

step in and do something about traffic con-

gestion in Kuils River. To date more than

2 750 people have signed the petition.

Kobus Vivier who initiated the petition,

this week welcomed the planned upgrade

to Amandel Road but still have concerns.

We have seen the plans, however there

are still complaints. There are not enough

exit points in Kuils River, Vivier said.

Several roads are problematic when ei-

ther exiting or enteringKuils River during

peak hour. They are Van Riebeeck Road,

    Nooiensfontein, Langverwacht, Link and

    Amandel roads.

We are glad they are going to start with

the upgrade but the question is how long

are they going to be busy? On the plans we

have seen there is no indication as to how

long the project will last, Vivier told Tyg-

    erBurger.

Brett Herron, mayco member for trans-

port, said it is anticipated that work will

be completed by the end of November,

    weather permitting.

Herron explained the first phase of the

project along Amandel Road will see the

upgrade of the road to a dual carriageway,

which will increase capacity and improve

    traffic flow.

The project will also include the signali-

sation of the intersection of Amandel and

Annandale roads, and an upgrade of exist-

ing signals at the Soneike Mall and Aman-

    del Road intersection.

This project forms part of the Citys key

interventions to address congestion in the

greater Kuils River area. Recent studies

have shown that the suburb is one of the

areas that needs to be prioritised in terms

    of transport infrastructure investment,

    Herron said.

Ward councillor Jacobs Jacobs was all

    smiles after hearing the news.

He said the part of the road that will be

upgraded is the section most congested

    during peak hour each morning.

All of the cars coming from Rouxville

    and Haasendal eventually drive through

    Amandel Road.

However, at the Bottelary River traffic

    comes to a halt.

He said he is thankful for the upgrade.

This will take a lot of pressure from our

    shoulders, Jacobs added.

He said hopefully traffic will flow easier

    after completion of the project.

Although the upgrade offers some relief,

work also needs to be done to Van Rie-

beeck, Pioneer Street and Digtebij Road,

    Jacobs said.

Motorists using these roads take long

before they reach the R300, Jacobs said.

Herron said although the project teams

will strive to minimise the impact on the

    public during the various construction

phases, deviations of the traffic at certain

    stages will be unavoidable.

TheCitywould like to apologise for this

inconvenience in advance, and assure resi-

dents that the siteswill bemanaged in such

a way as to keep delays and disruptions to

    the minimum.

Ultimately, it is hoped that the tempo-

rary inconvenience will be worth the long-

term relief that this project will bring to

    the area, Herron said.

eople paying tribute and bidding their

last farewell to fallen African giant,

the late Melvyn Caroline, packed the

hall at the Western Cape Sport School.

Caroline was director of the Metropole

East Education District (MEED) up until his

    death a week ago.

The father of three was admitted to Pano-

rama Hospital on Saturday 7 March where

it was established that he had suffered a

heart attack and had pneumonia. He died a

week later, on Saturday 14 March.

    Moving memorial

At a moving memorial service held for

him on Thursday at the Sport School in

Kuils River, many remembered him as a

kind, gentle and skilful father, friend and

colleague. During the service photos of the

fallen educator were displayed on a big

screen showing him in happier times with

those whom he loved, worked with and had

a profound influence on. Principals were al-

so given the opportunity to light symbolic

candles of hope on the stage.

Speaking on behalf of the MEED Princi-

pals Forum, Ayanda Mbava described him

    asagreat soulwhodepartedbutwhosemem-

    ory will never face.

The loss is huge and we can only share

in your (the familys) pain.May his soul rest

    in peace, Mbava said.

Caroline was described a loyal and dedi-

cated worker, someone who always showed

perseverance and who was committed to do

    what needed to be done.

He was a leader in his own right.

We as educators are trusted to deliver

quality education and good results. That is

    what he did, Mbava added.

Mbava said the district still celebrates the

recent pass rate success obtained bymatrics

during 2014 a success story in which Caro-

line with his leadership skills and his man-

agement team played a vital role.

He supported schools in their time of

need, that is because he understood the im-

    portance of education, Mbava said.

    MarkWilliams,who spoke onbehalf of the

    South African Principals Association (Sa-

pa) described Caroline as a great African

    tree that has fallen.

    A giant among giants

We stillmourn the death of our director,

he said, describing Caroline as a strong and

    good leader.

Representatives of Sadtu, Naptosa and the

    SAOU also paid tribute.

Leon Beech, a representative from North-

link College, described Caroline as a leader,

mentor and visionary. And yes, a giant

    amongst giants, he added.

We are bitter and angry. Why should it

    be him? he said.

Benjamin Schereka, on behalf of MEED

said Caroline was the pilot of a mighty ship,

    that ship is MEED.

He thanked Carolines family for allowing

him the freedom to help and support many

who depended on him, the district officials,

    school principals, teachers and learners.

A sermon was delivered by Father Staf-

    ford Moses.

    Carolines funeral tookplace onSaturday.

ersterivier hip-hop artist, P. Dyno will

be battling it out against Rn B singer

Adee Jay at Mia Casa in Kuils River

    on Friday.

The two want to settle a debate over who

has the biggest following in Cape Town and

which genre will get a better response.

    P. Dyno is passionate about hip-hop. He

started hismusical career in high school al-

ready and says he never really chose the

genre; it was always just a part of him.

    It was a chancemeetingwith anothermu-

    sicianswhile hewas chilling in detention

in grade nine that ignited the flame.

I was writing down some lyrics and then

this guy came up to me and asked me what

    I was doing.

    Catchy club bangers

He told him that hewanted to be a hip-hop

artist. His fellow learner at Paul Roos Gym-

nasium wanted to be a producer, so the two

started working together in his home stu-

    dio.

They took the tracks theyd worked on to

school and their friends loved it andquickly

shared it among themselves. Thats how I

    started.

    P. Dyno describes hismusic as commerci-

al and a little self assured with moments

that will touch you. He likes producing

catchy club bangers for anyone hip-hop

    fans of all ages.

After five years in the music industry, he

founded the hip- hop group YSON (Young

Stunnaz over Everything), has a clothing

    sponsorship from Music Generation and

    performs all over Cape Town.

Although hes unsigned, P. Dyno has the

backing of a full support teamwho help him

    with everything frommanagement and pro-

    duction to marketing.

My team and I make a nice hype around

    Cape Town.

    New video

With the help of his team, P. Dyno relea-

sed a newmusic video for the trackEverthy-

ing new last month. The video was filmed

and produced by his manager, Nick Jagger

and racked up more than 1000 views in just

two days. Hes previous music video for

Stand up and wait was launched on Cape

    Town TV.

    Lastweekhe performed tomore than 1000

people at UWCduring one of their rugby ga-

    mes.

Hes hoping to play to another big crowd

at Mia Casa on Friday. The evening will in-

clude a competition for fans with a cash pri-

ze up for grabs. When you come to the

show, you are allowed to take a selfie with

    Adee Jay or myself.

Fans are encouraged to share these selfies

on the respective artists Facebook fan pa-

ges and the best selfie will win a cash pri-

    Wesbank residents calls to ha-

ve an elevator installed at the lo-

    cal SakhIngomso Multi-Purpo-

se Centre has fallen on deaf

    ears.

    Residents requested an eleva-

tor be installed at the two-storey

    building in order for disabled

people to get access to the top

    floor.

    However, a decision was ta-

ken not to install the elevator

    due to potential contractors in-

flating the cost of the project

    during tender application.

    Speaking at a subcouncilmee-

    ting on Wednesday last week,

the department of sport and re-

    creation project manager Avela

    Mgcotyelwa explained that con-

    sultants as well as mechanical

    engineers have been appointed

to establish the possibility of in-

    stalling an elevator shaft and

    subsequent cost. This process

    alone cost R35 775.

    We called for tenders. Two

    possible contractors attended

    andmade anoffer,Mgcotyelwa

    said.

    Offers were received from

    both contractors which were

    evaluated by the consultant.Ho-

    wever, the offer, according to

    Mgcotyelwa, were way over the

R250 000 budget set aside for the

    construction process.

    A cancellation report has sub-

    sequently been finalised.

    Ward 17 councillor Wilma

    Brady expressed her dismay

    and requested the official res-

ponsible for the original plan to

    install the shaft, Theo Booysen,

    be called to answer.

    She said the allocated amount

    for the project was insufficient

and an additional R100 000 had

    to be made available.

    Majidie Abrahams, PR coun-

cillor, said the price had been

    inflated by potential contrac-

tors and the community is now

    kept hostage by the situation.

    Municipal manager Pieter

Grobler, on his part tried to ex-

    plain: According to the consul-

tant the money for the project

was enough but due to the ten-

    der submissions that came in,

the project could not go ahead,

    he said.

    Grobler added that the re-

    mainder of the allocated budget

will now be re-allocated to the

City of Cape Towns parks de-

    partment.

    Plans for elevator

    fail to get lift off

Plans to erect an elevator at this

    multipurpose centre were

    cancelled recently.

RACING: SEASON SET TO COME TO A SPECTACULAR END

    Ladies lead

    in Minis

    ADRIAN PHEIFFER

With the summer oval track seasonmoving

towards a spectacular finish, the stock car

jocks are going to be celebrating their 20 ye-

ars on the Engen Oval at Killarney in style

during their sunset meeting on Saturday.

This includes a display of drifting by the

dynamic Team Red in their hugely power-

ful, speciallymodified drift specials that de-

velop up to 700 horsepower and ride (side-

ways), on 17 and 18 inch tyres.

As far as the racing is concerned, one of

the most intriguing features of the champi-

onship so far has been the way the young

women have dominated the Access Auto

Mini category. The attractive Kayla Jones

continues to stretch her overall lead, while

Michaela van Tonder is not far behind in

third place. Then theres 12-year-old rookie

Ciara van Niekerk who understandably be-

gan slowly. She showed a touch of class last

month when she fought her way through to

finish second, two points behind Jones.

    TheMayfair Gearbox / ProtechAuto Ser-

vices Clubman battle is a close one with on-

ly four points separating Renier Louw and

    Quintin Saayman. However, if Saayman

can continue in the form he displayed du-

ring the Februarymeeting the lead is going

    to change hands on Saturday.

There is a similar four point gap in the

Rite Auto Electric 2.1 Modified class where

Russell Ormerod is back in the lead for the

first time since last year. It is now up to

Francois Muller to keep his foot down and

    regain the initiative this weekend.

    While Steven Heydenrych has emerged

as the driver to beat in the big Tygerberg

    Engine Rebuilders/Andre Groenewald Mo-

    torsV8 class, veteranMartinNeethling and

Ryan Steyn are not too far behind

Admission isR60 for adults, R20 for schol-

ars under 16. Children under 10 are free.
