“Thenyou startedlookingaroundyou, watching theTVand lis-tening to the radio and all you were fed wasthe gang culture. We were not given any oth-er alternatives.

“Even I was at one time attracted to it withthe image of success that I thought was thelife of a gangster. Luckily I realised that thereality of this type of existence brought toomuch harm to families when three of myfriends were killed in gang related incidents.

“Unfortunately our children are still beinginfluenced by these negative role-modelsand its time that people realise that to startfighting the influence of gangs you must pullout the roots of the problem.”

In Belhar, Roderick van Sitters (46) agreedthat the youth who have become gangsterswere influenced by the culture of popularis-ing the gang culture.

“All these authorities, the police, and thecouncil, want toworkwith the gangs tobringabout peace. That is total nonsense, gangshave no place in our areas,” he said.

“I have got no degrees or anything but Ican tell you the rot started setting in whenthey started telling us that our heroes shouldbe people like Snoop Dogg and all those otherso-called rappers that could just talk aboutkilling each other and disrespecting women.

“That trend is still continuing and nobodyrecognises the damage that it is doing in ourcommunities.

“In recent years I have discovered thatthere are so many young musical talentsthat could become positive role models forour children but they are not getting thesame recognition as these gangsters that in-fluence our children.

“As a community we must take note ofwhat is destroying our children and speakout against it wherever we can. Our childrendeserve a chance to achieve their potentialin life, but it won’t be through gangsterism.”

GARY VAN DYK

Communities are calling for stronger ac-tion against gangs.

This call has come after an increase ingang related violence in various communi-ties on the Cape Flats in recent weeks.

In Elsies River and Delft there have beenincidents of shootings, but in Valhalla Park,Somali shop owners came under fire whentheir shops were torched last week.

At first these incidents were thought to bean emergence of xenophobia in the area, butresidents in the affected areas have revealedthat it is a new move by gangs to try and in-volve them in peddling drugs from these spa-za shops.

A community worker in Angela Street, who did not want to be named, confirmedthat residents did not have a problem withthe Somalis trading in the area.

“In the past few months many of thesetraders have been telling us about gangmembers trying to force them to sell drugsor paying protection money.

“These burnings must be proof that theyare not wanting to take part in illegal activi-ties. They just want to make an honest livingproviding a much-needed service in the com-munity.”

While these incidents of gang related vio-lence continue many local organisations arecoming together to initiate strategies to stopgangsterism flourishing like it has in thepast few years. Many feel that more mustbe done to discourage the youth from joininggangs.

Arnold Jacobs (36) from Bishop Lavis, feels that pop culture has played a big partin popularising the gang culture.

“I have lived here all my life and as ayoungster I remember a community wherewe looked at positive role models in our

A spectacular fundraiser in aid of theRamot Treatment Centre for Addictionin Parow will take place tomorrow.

Ramot has been in existence for 50 yearsand is one of very few facilities that offer anin-patient programme and detox to peoplesuffering with drug addic-tion.

The fundraiser will beheld at the WelgemoedChurch in Dias Street, Bel-lville.

The motivational speak-er on the night will beaward-winning actor, en-trepreneur and winner ofSurvivor Maledives 2011 –Hykie Berg – who has alsoovercome drug addiction.

Speaking to TygerBurg-er Berg says he is hon-oured to be able to speak topeople who could be goingthrough the same experi-ence he did.

“Addiction is a disease, adisease that has no knowncure, it can however be ar-rested at some point and recovery is thenpossible. We are always in recovery. We arenever recovered.”

Berg has struggled with drugs for manyyears. “I became a lying, selfish, deceitfulthug, shoving needles in my arms blamingthe world and everybody else for my misera-ble life.

“My ignorance and unwillingness to lis-ten, as well as an inherent force of a recklessrebellion, lead me down a never-ending spi-

ral of drugs, gangs and almost anything de-pressing that you can possibly think of.”

He says with overcoming addiction he hashad a second chance.

“I have been to many rehabs, mental insti-tutions, government institutions, hospitals, churches, doctors and jail, the list goes onand on. I’ve been arrested, been beaten up,and left for the rats in the gutters, but it was

through the grace of Godthat I was able to overcomemy addiction.”

Today Berg says he haspurpose in helping otherpeople find a new way oflife.

“I love helping people ontheir road to recovery, help them believe in them-selves, God and their pur-pose. I get my greatestthrill of accomplishmentfrom the knowledge that Ihave played a part in thecreation of a new happi-ness and hope achieved bycountless others. The factthat I work and earn myliving as an actor or busi-nessman is important, butsecondary.”

Esme Brink from the Ramot TreatmentCentre for Addiction’s marketing depart-ment says the day is about creating aware-ness among the younger people about thedangers of drug abuse and the fact that thereis a way out.

The fundraiser will start at 18:00 and thecost is R60. For further details from the eventcontact Brink on 021 939 2033.

Regular visitors to the Tygerberg Hospi-tal in Parow are thrilled that the plannedupgrade to the emergency unit has final-ly began.

The project with a cost of R10 million isset for completion in April next year.

Besides this upgrade a complete make-over of the hospital is also planned for 2016.

This mega-project will entail a completeredesign of the hospital. Plans to incorporatea private partner who will finance, design, build and operate the hospital on behalf ofthe department of health for a concession pe-riod of 20 to 30 years is underway.

“At the emergency centre there are cur-rently nursing staff who run a separatetriage area at the hospital for walk-in pa-tients and the emergency facilities are frag-mented with trauma, surgical, medical, ob-stetric and gynaecological and paediatricemergencies being managed separately,”says Western Cape minister of health, The-uns Botha.

“The new emergency centre will providefor trauma, surgical and medical emergen-cies, but obstetric and gynaecological emer-gencies will remain as separate entities.

“At present no renovations are done at Ty-gerberg Hospital itself, but in the meantime, the R10 million renovation work of the emer-gency centre continues.”

The construction work for the emergencyunit includes:

. A new reception area;

. Psychiatric observation rooms;

. A new trauma wing with a new nurse’sstation and paediatrics, and

. Floors and ceilings will be replaced andtoilets upgraded.

Botha says: “Tygerberg Hospital was builtwith an apartheid design and the conditionof the facility is poor resulting in a severely

compromised service environment.”In view of the mega-project, Western Cape

government health is not investing capitalin the current hospital.

“We realise that the current hospital is de-teriorating, but ask that patients bear withthe situation. It makes no sense to spend ourhealth rands on a building that will not func-tion as a hospital four years from now.”

Sherice Dreyer, who is often at the hospi-

tal, says the initiative is welcomed.“An upgrade is needed and the mainte-

nance of the upgrade should also be taken in-to consideration. The upgrade is good newsand will uplift the spirits of the patientswhich goes a long way when healing.”

Charles Fredericks agrees: “Work to thehospital is long overdue. It’s even more de-pressing to be admitted to a hospital whenthe conditions are bad.”

“Funnily enough, I didn’t know what an on-cologist was. I only ever related cancerwith adults, never actually contemplatedthe fact that children can get cancer.”

About a year ago four-year-old Ashley keptcomplaining about an upset tummy. His stom-ach felt extremely hard, he lost his appetite andoccasionally had a fever, recalls his parents Bi-anca and Johnny Hayes. Their doctor referredthem to a paediatrician who took some X-rays.

He noticed something, but could not confirma diagnosis, so it was off to Louis Leipoldt hos-pital for sonar and a CT scan. “They just cameand said ‘there’s a growth, we’re going to sendthe oncologist to come and speak to you’.” Onlyafter Johnny googled it, it became all too real:oncology equals cancer.

Ashley had a cancerous growth on his rightkidney known as nephroblastoma or Wilms’tumour. Their world came shattering down.Even though the five year survival rate forWilms’ is about 90 percent, “you just wishedit wasn’t you”, says Bianca. “It felt like theytook my heart out, stamped on it and didn’t putit back again.”

They had to accept it and be strong for Ashleyand for his twin sister Kelly and older brotherAlex’s sake too.Twoweeks after diagnosisAsh-ley started with chemotherapy as the tumourwas too big to be removed via a nephrectomy(removal of the kidney). It took four weekly ses-sions of chemo to shrink it down from 14 to sev-en centimetres before they could operate.

Unfortunately the biopsy done after removalshowed that there were more high risk cells inhis body.

Because it could grow back on other organsor spread via the lymph nodes, Ashley had togo through six more months of chemo.

Help for mom especially, but also for the restof the family, came in the form of Mandie Eras-mus from Little Fighters Cancer Trust (LFCT).

LFCT, which is one of the beneficiaries forthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! con-cert, was started to support and assist children

diagnosed with cancer and their families, asmany cannot cope with the day to day pres-sures, financially or emotionally.TygerBurgeris the media sponsor of the concert.

“The support has been great. Mandie gave ushope, she phoned three or four times a week, still does. She’s just so upbeat; she just lifts upyour spirit.”

Ashley had his last chemo on 16 March andis due to have his first check-up soon.

ANDRÉ BAKKES

It took the iconic Nelson Mandela 67years to change South Africa.

When a grossly unfair regime eclipsedany glimmer of hope, Madiba persevered.

Then, when he finally achieved his pur-pose by ushering in a new beginning, he didsomething truly historic – he embraced theenemy.

The embodiment of a nation’s strugglewas transformed from one of revenge to un-expected conciliation.

This sacrifice was eventually recognisedby the United Nations in 2009 when it de-clared 18 July as Mandela Day.

On this day, people from all over theworld dedicate 67 minutes to fight povertyand promote peace.TygerBurger asked a few readers what

this day means to them and whether theyare willing to sacrifice 67 minutes of theiryear to alleviate the pain of others.

As always, the responses were varied. Insome instances it engendered hope and inothers it brought out strong feelings of con-tempt.

A disturbing and recurring theme, how-ever, was that few people actually knewwhat the day was all about.

Dalingyebo Magwa says he knows aboutMandela Day, but not why one should dedi-cate specifically 67 minutes of one’s time.Christopher October doesn’t have a clue, but after it is explained to him he admitsthat it is a great idea and that the worldwould indeed be a better place if everyonehelps each other for a change.

An anonymous woman says she has no ideawhy it’s Mandela Day. She also doesn’t caretoo much, because “Mandela is just anotherperson like you and me – we all live the sameand die the same”.

Mlamle Swartbooi is planning to spendtime with his family, but he has no idea whythe number 67 is significant. “People mustcare for others,” he continues with convic-tion.

Another anonymous woman brushes offthe special day when she says: “No! I’m notinterested in Mandela Day! I’m not interestedin this idea at all.”

Another says: “I’ve got two sons who Man-dela saidwill havea future and they can’t findjobs. I think Mandela did great for himself, but we are now experiencing just the re-verse.”

Pastor Enrico Fisher wrongly muses thatthe number 67 represents the number ofyears Mandela spent in prison.

However, the idea of the day doesn’t escapehim.

He quotes from the Bible when he says thatthe wicked shall be turned into hell.

“Here in South Africa, what we are seeingracism, the corruption, the evil that is hap-pening now is because we turned our back on-to God,” he concludes ominously.

Another person who unsurprisingly wantsto stay anonymous says: “I don’t know andI don’t f@$&ing care.”

Everyone has an opinion, but it is sad thata noble idea such as helping one anotherhasn’t taken hold on the masses.

His name and the meaning of Mandela Dayis sadly not yet embedded in the minds ofmost South Africans.

What ‘67 minutes’means to you

Dalingyebo Magwa says he will be workingon Mandela Day, but he will be doing something for the poorest of the poor. “I think it’sa good day. If everyone could do somethingthen the world will be a better place. If youcan’t give money or time, then you should give love to those who need love.”

Photos: André Bakkes

When Brian Knipe is asked why Mandela Dayis celebrated today, he said: “It’s somethingto do with the children’s fund I think. I knowyou’re supposed to do something special forsomebody else, but I’m not sure why it’s 67minutes... We’re not going to do somethingspecific for Mandela Day, because every dayis Mandela Day.” He added that if every daywas like a Mandela Day then the world wouldbe a wonderful place to live in.

Ravensmead Athletics Club isgetting children to sprint ahead.

Their Kids Development teamperformed very well when they re-cently took part in the WesternProvince Athletics Mini-Olympicshosted at Vygieskraal Stadium inAthlone.

The team obtained the overall sil-ver medal for their performances atthe games that served as the pinna-cle of a week-long holiday camp for150 children.

While school holidays can seemto be never-ending to many parentsand boring for the children, the hol-iday camp provided an excitingweek of activities, including a visitto the aquarium.

The Mini-Olympics provided afun-filled competitive day of racing, jumping and throwing events, which inspired and excited.

Chairman of the club, AbramMadiehe, was excited about theachievements of these youngstersfrom the club.

“We are very proud of their hardwork and dedication to the sport,”he said.

“There are also big thanks totheir trainer and facilitatorFundiswa Sandi as well as the par-ents who volunteer to assist withthe children’s training.

“I am confident that we are goingto get some champions from thisgroup especially because this groupwasonly started sixmonths ago.Wewould like to invite and encourageother youngsters who are interest-ed in athletics to join up with us.”

For further information aboutthe activities Madiehe can be con-tacted on 082 323 5828, and Sandi on073 526 1120. Adults are also wel-come to join.

Kwaai stryd in Bafdeling

Riverside Rangers still leadthe Northern Football Associ-ation Super League table with11 points ahead of other titlehopefuls with 12 games to go.

Captain Moses Ficks insiststhat the team of Avonwood haveto make use of their chances ifthey hope to win the league thisseason.

The defending champions faceBellville United in a leaguematch at Bellville South on Sun-day.

With one match played in thesecond round Riverside Rangerslost to Eastern Rovers on Satur-day. However, Ficks says theblame should not only be shoul-dered by the strikers.

“As a team we have to makeuse of our chances and not onlyblame the strikers when thereare no goals,” he said. “With thesystem we play every player hasthe opportunity to score goals forthe team.

“We have also noticed thatteams have resorted to parkingthe defensive bus at the backwhenever they come up againstus, but we have to be innovativeand findothermeansof penetrat-ing them and finding the goals.”

The Coke Cup is still in the mixthis season, which makes theschedule a bit tighter but Ficksrefuses to use that as an excuse.

“Our team has a huge squad oftalented players, who are equal-ly capable of delivering thegoodsand the way the coach has been

rotating players between theleague and cup should alleviateany possibilities of fatigue.

“Apart from keeping the play-ers fresh, the rotation of playersbetween the league and cupmatches keeps everyone on theirtoes and helps the coach see oth-er players in his squad. We havea lot of talent in the team, everyposition has an equally capablereplacement should anythinghappen to any player.”

On the possibility of addingtwo trophies to their collectionby winning both the league andKnock-Out competition, Fickssays things are looking positivebut adds that they will not counttheir chickens before they havehatched.

“We’ll take each game as itcomes,” he says.

As a player he said that he ishappy with his contribution tothe team in the new role affordedto him by coach Mondo, but addsthat he can never be too comfort-able because there is still a lot ofroom for improvement.

Eastern Rovers have put theirvictory at the weekend over Riv-erside Rangers behind them andnow focus on another crunch fix-ture, this time against a serious-ly wounded Kalksteenfontein atSalberau Park.
