Onsgebruik dikwels die term depressie inons alledaagse gesprekke, byvoorbeeld:“My rugbyspan maak my so depressief

wanneer hulle so swak speel.”

Wanneer jy egter depressief is, raak jy

TheBellville South community is angry thata man accused of a hit and run incident isshowing no remorse for his actions.

Last Wednesday they braved the heavyrains as they took to the streets in front ofthe Bellville Magistrate’s Court to call forstronger action in this case which left four-year-old Zach Isaacs dead earlier this year.

According to Dhakier Christians, a com-munity worker, the picket was sparked byrecent reports from people in the area thatSteven Stuurman Jooste, the man facingcharges for the hit and run incident thatkilled Zach was seen driving irresponsiblyand under the influence of alcohol in Bel-lville South recently.

“He has shown no remorse for his ac-tions,” said Christians.

“For the past few weeks we have been get-ting reports from people who have seen himdriving wildly around here.

“We cannot allow him an opportunity toinjure somebody else with his actions. If hedid not learn his lesson then he must staybehind bars.”

The case was postponed until Friday 3 Oc-tober in order for Jooste to get legal repre-sentation.

“We, as members of the Bellville Southcommunity demonstrated in order to getJooste’s bail revoked, and we want justiceto be done to set an example to show thatdrunkendriving is a serious crime, especial-ly when an innocent young life is taken.

“The community demands that Jooste re-ceives maximum imprisonment for the factthat he has shown no remorse and has noregret for his actions,” Christians vehe-mently stated.

New tongue for staffHealth service personnel at Delft andKraai-fontein Community Health Centres haveagain proven there is no substitute for hardwork and dedication. They did this by completing a second

round of isiXhosa and Afrikaans communi-cation skills in order to provide for theneeds of patients in their mother tongue.Health centre staff, for example doctors,

dentists, administrators and nursing staffworking in HIV/AIDS and tuberculosisclinics, are among those who graduated onWednesday 6August from the course collab-oratively presented by the University ofCape Town (UCT) Faculties of Health Sci-ences and Humanities, the Provincial Gov-ernment of theWesternCapeHealthDepart-ment, and the European Union (EU).The Languages to Clinic staff-courseswas

to redress the imbalance in the patient needfor access to health care, in the WesternCape where isiXhosa, Afrikaans and Eng-lish are the three “official” languages. Thelanguages courses were initiated at UCT in2003, to address this language imbalance byteaching medical students isiXhosa and Af-rikaans during their undergraduate train-

ing. The Division of Family Medicine wasrepresented by Prof Derek Hellenberg, DrNayna Manga and Ms Delena Fredericks. The isiXhosa Section was represented by

Zukile Jama and the Afrikaans section byDr Joel Claassen and Dr Minnie Lewis. The second roundof classeswas rolled out

at the two clinics in March 2014 and one-hour classes were offered on aweekly basis. The staff at both clinics who completed

the courses were enthusiastic about thecourse, saying that their new abilitieswould help them to communicate betterwith patients at their respective posts. Par-ticipating staff stressed that the course alsooffered insight and understanding of differ-ent patients’ cultures. The Delft Health Committee representati-

ve, Amelia Jones, who was present at theevent, felt that the community memberswould benefit greatly from staff being ableto understand the patients’ language, albeitat a very basic level. The facility managersand staff at the two CHCs and their staff de-serve special praise for participating in thisproject and seeing it through to a successfulcompletion.

The City of Cape Town’s social developmentand early childhood development directora-te urges community organisations workingwith vulnerable groups to apply for rates re-bates as soon as possible.

Shelters working with homeless peopleand homes catering for the health of phys-ically or mentally challenged individualsand vulnerable groups need to register withthe City’s Homeless Agency Committee toapply for rebates related to rates, solid was-te, water and sanitation, and sewage by 31August.

In the past financial year, the City has helda number of information sessions to ensurethat interested organisations are informedof this opportunity as well as the relevantdocumentation needed and the process to befollowed to qualify for relief for the 2014/2015financial year.

“We’ve discovered in the past that someorganisations are unaware of the policy, while others have failed to qualify for reliefmerely because they did not have the neces-sary documentation, or were unsure of howto fill in the forms,” said the City’s maycomember for social development and earlychildhood development, Suzette Little.

“So, last year we started the informationsessions to assist organisations who do ster-ling work in our communities but who oftenstruggle to cover costs such as municipalbills because of funding constraints. In thisway, the City and NGOs can work togetherto make progress possible.”

For more information on how to apply forthe rebates, NGOs can contact the City’s CallCentre on 0860 103 089 or visit their nearestmunicipal office.

The directorate is also planning to amendthe City’s current Rates Rebate Policy to al-low registered Early Childhood Develop-ment (ECD) centres to apply for rebates aswell. They are currently excluded.

Parents, more particularly fathers, who default on their maintenancepayments, will be caught by a new

wave of legislation initiatied by a move-ment aiming to put a stop to this socialcrime.

Initiated by the Democratic Alliance’sWomen’s network (DAWN) and supportedby other political parties in cabinet, themovement symbolised by the wearing ofa blue sash around the shoulder has madeplenty of headway in only six weeks.

MP and leader of DAWN, Denise Robin-son of Durbanville last week spoke to Ty-gerBurger about the objectives of the cam-paign.

FatherlessRobinson says up to 48% of children in

South Africa grow up either without amother or a father and that in tens of thou-sands of these cases, the absent parentdoes not honour their responsibility to paychild maintenance.

“This adds to the downward cycle of pov-erty as many of these children are then de-nied a proper education,” she said, addingthat this is the single biggest obstacleagainst these children successfully access-ing opportunities for creating a better lifefor themselves.

“A little more than a month fromlaunching the campaign, DAWN, alongwith the Justice department, NationalCredit Regulator, credit bureaus and theDepartment of Trade and Industry, havemanaged to tighten up on credit regula-tions that will see to it that maintenancedefaulters are brought to book,” she toldTygerBurger in an interview.

In consultation with the above entities,

new draft regulations for the credit indus-try will now provide for maintenance de-faults to stay on a person’s credit recordfor five years, or until a court rescinds adefault judgement.

Furthermore, maintenance paymentswill have to be included in all affordabilityassessments completed when applying fornew loans and clients will be required todeclare if they have any maintenance de-fault judgements against them.

Twopronged approachRobinson says, these draft amendments

were published in the Government Ga-

zette three weeks ago for public input, af-ter which it will be promulgated.

In addition to this, the Department ofJustice has also drafted a Bill to amend theMaintenance Act, that will enable creditbureaus to track down maintenance de-faulters who can’t be found by the courts.

This Bill will empower credit bureaus tofortify maintenance judgements to affectdefaulters’ credit records.

But the fight does not stop here and isbased on a two-pronged approach, the oth-er addressing the issue of the efficiency ofthe maintenance courts.

“Women often have to take off work, spend a lot of time and money travellingand sitting in line at the maintenancecourts, while the perpetrators make amockery of justice. This has to stop and wehave launched an investigation into all as-pects to address the situation,” she says.

PressureSeveral maintenance courts in Cape

Town have already been visited by Robin-son and DAWN has started to apply pres-sure for the Justice department to obtainmore funding.

“There simply are not enough courts, in-vestigators, prosecutors or social workersto deal with the unnaturally high case loadof maintenance cases. More money willhave to be made available by govern-ment,” she said.

With the investigation, Robinson is alsoworking toward setting up a “courtwatch” to monitor the workings of mainte-nance courts.

“We have to hold the courts accountableand take up the fight for all single parentswhere the system might have left themdown.”V Denise Robinson can be reached at denis[email protected] for any input or enquiries.

Elsies River residents receivedinsight into the fight againstcrime when the CPF hostedtheir general meeting on Thurs-day 14 August at the AdriaanseCivic Centre.

This meeting was to share theactivities of the Elsies RiverCPF and listen to residents’ con-cerns.

Cluster CPF chairpersonFaisal Abrams people raisedquestions about police intelli-gence, remarking that drugdealing activities continuedopenly without action from thepolice.

“The colonel in reply has-tened to say that the best intelli-gence is within the communityand that information must beforwarded to the SAPS,” saidAbrams.

“Some residents then arguedthat this puts them at risk be-cause information that is givenbackfires on them because thevery same people against whothe complaint is made is some-how informed who the com-plainant is.”

Concerns were also raised re-lating to police service deliveryand the behaviour of police of-ficers.

“Some speakers raised ques-tions with regard to the unsafeenvironment at schools wheregangsters walk in and threatenlearners, even forcing them tosell drugs at schools,” he said.

“The question was also raisedabout bringing in the army andit is clear that the feeling is that‘enough is enough’.”

V For more information regarding CPFactivities contact Abrams on 084 7204238 or email [email protected].

The Haynes family in Connaught Estatehave dedicated their efforts to making a dif-ference in their neighbourhood and sur-rounding areas. There’s the sound of laughter coming

from inside their modest home as a groupof youngsters enjoy an afternoon of movies, but this is only the tip of the iceberg of activ-ities organised by the New Hope JeremiahProject.MirnaRinquest explains that their efforts

were started by her parents Margie andConnie Haynes to empower youth in theircommunity and to care for the less fortu-nate in their neighbourhood.“What they started has empowered all of

us in the family, our friends andmanymorewho are part of this network who want tomake a difference through caring,” saysRinquest.“One of our major aims is to see that the

children in our area are leading fulfillingand happy lives. Theymust be given the op-portunity to develop outstanding personali-ties for a future that sees them fulfillingtheir positive potential.“We want to achieve that by protecting

them from all the dangers around us, pro-vide service to people in need, and to advo-cate for justice in social structures.“Our hope is that we not only inspire the

children but also motivate others in ourcommunity to join us in improving theirlives.”Workingwith the children, she explained

that throughout the year they have activi-ties to keep the children off the streets.

“As you can see when it rains we have amovie for them, but if the weather is goodwe are outside doing sporting activities.”she continues.“During the holidays we will have pro-

grammes for them and the focus is alwayson creating a drug and abuse free environ-ment.”Mirna also pointed out that the project al-

so looked beyond the children, aiming toprovide help wherever it was needed.“We are currently running the NPO from

home, fromwherewealso goout to informalsettlements and people living on the streetsto feed and clothe them.“EveryFriday there is a soupkitchen that

we run fromhere fromwhichwe sometimesserve up to 300 people.“There is sometimes also the need for us

to see to some very basic needs for familiesin dire conditions. We try to provide themwith food and clothing on a daily basis.“Where there is nothing, we have to give

people hope.”While they have been doing their best to

keep up with the demand for their services, they are still in need of assistance fromsponsors.“There is still so much we want to do but

cannot get help or sponsorship to reachmore of our goals,” she said.“Much of it comes from our own pockets

Then shetestified how she was saved by God and thatGod has a reason for each and every one forwhere they are today, it’s part of his biggerplan.”Another exciting part of the day was that

bikers from different clubs, from as far asWorcester, entertained the kids with bikerides in the parking lot.The children also enjoyed meeting Ser-

I read the article “Parents needto quell kids’ drinking” withgreat interest (TygerBurger, 20August). While I would certain-ly throw my weight behindsuch a campaign, I cannot helpbut wonder how successful itwould really be.Youth, especially the kindwho grace this earth today, have a mind of their own. They say what they want, actthe way they want and they dowhat they want. Parents canindeed teach their childrenthat alcohol is bad for them, but they cannot stop themfrom trying it, especially whenthey are not around. But thefinal decision still lies with theone lifting the glass.

Waar is jul morele verpligting?

JACO ZAAYMANKraaifontein

Waar is TygerBurgerse morele pligte?

I am so saddened by Sue’sremarks (“Weighty concernover beauty photo, TygerBurg-er, 13 August). Overweightpeople have such a verydifficult life as it is. The lastthing on earth they everwanted was to be overweight.Where is Sue’s compassion? You should be ashamed ofyourself, Sue. Do you think youare a better human being?By the way, I am not anoverweight 76-year-old woman.

Verbeel jou!

The Reach Out and Teach HIV and TB groupare a group of volunteers who are playinga major role in the treatment of patients atthe Elsies River Clinic in Halt Road.

For the past few months they have steppedin at the facility when the feeding schemeat the clinic stopped operating.

Ronelle van Wyngaardt, one of the volun-teers, pointed out that many of the patientscome to the clinic to take their medicationbut they cannot take it if they have not hadsomething to eat.

“At the moment we are seeing that pa-tients at the facility get something to eat byproviding fruit and sandwiches on a dailybasis,” she says.

“We are very happy to be doing this forthem and the patients are very happy to getsomething to eat when they are here.

“Too many of them really do not have any-thing to go to at their homes, so this helpswhen they get their medication and is alsovital for their treatment.”

While the patients are benefiting from thisservice, this labour of love comes at a costbecause they are not getting any regularsponsorship.

“There are a few donations but when itruns out we have to dig into our own pock-ets,” says van Wyngaardt.

“We really need some extra help to keepthis service going and we are calling on indi-viduals and businesses in the area to helpwith this project.

“There are many patients here gettingtheir medication for TB and HIV, and havingsomething to eat helps with their medica-tion when they take it here.”

Gay man word wreed aangerand

Twee weke ná die aanval is dié jong man

Ek is

verkleineer enverneder indie straat envooralmal uitgejou oor ek ’n ‘moffie’ is.

vrou.

Bellville’s ‘The Kid’ earns respect

Shaun de Lange is undefeated in the EFC Africa welterweight division.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

To have your fellow professional MMAfighters come shake your hand after aepic battle shows you have earned re-

spect. This iswhat happened to Shaun “TheKid”

de Lange after he beat Gordon Roodman atEFC Africa 32 two weeks ago.Shaun, aptly named “The Kid” at the age

of 21, is showing a lot ofmaturity in thehexa-gon and is currently unbeaten after threeprofessional fights in the welterweight divi-sion.Some EFC critics reckon this is one of the

best fights they have ever seen.“I feel honoured that people think that.

Myself and Gordon fought hard that night,it was a bloody mess. We stood and tradedstrikes all fight. Gordon, likeme is awarriorand I respect the hard work he puts in.

Great team“My coaches Dean Johnson and Earl Ab-

rahams are great, always pushing me andkeeping me focused. To be a top fighter youneed a great coaching teamand that is exact-ly what I have,” said a satisfied Shaun.

Shaun learned the art of fighting underthe guidance of GrahamTurner. But, for thelast year Shaun decided to join Lethal EdgeMMA and Fitness Centre managed and

coached by Dean Johnson.“Shaun is really growing in leaps and

bounds, he is much more refined and youcan’t help feel excited for what the future

holds for him,” says Dean.“I see him as an accomplished fighter at

21, there aren’tmany that youngwith his ex-perience.”For now, it’s back in the gym training

hard.

In his own backyardShaun trains five days a week for about

four hours a day. Covering all the basics, with no two sessions are the same.“I will love to fight in my own back yard

at GrandWest on 6 November when it’s EFCAfrica 35. I don’t have any specific fighterin mind, that is up to the EFC, so I will waitand see what they offer. My target now is tojust keep fighting in the organisation,” saidShaun.According to Dean, they would love to

have one or twomore fights before consider-ing a title bout.“I think it will be wise to give Shaun one

of two more fights before we start focusingon a potential title fight. Seeing that he onlyhas three professional fights, it only makessense to give him one or two more fights.”Shaun beat Booto Guylain and Saxon De-

lafield in his previous outings.
