Die verkeerde vertolking van ’n briefvan die Stad Kaapstad het verledeweek gelei tot groot konsternasie by ’n

sekerheidsmaatskappy wat ’n kontrak metdie Stad het.

Sowat 150 ongelukkige sekerheidsbeamp-tes wat vir Inferno-Sekerheidsdienste werk,het by dié maatskappy se kantoor in Good-wood opgedaag en hul geld geëis. Dit kom nádie maatskappy hulle in kennis gestel hetdat hulle nie meer op die persele van die Stadkan werk nie omdat hulle buitelanders is.

In ’n brief getiteld “Removal of Foreignersfrom All City of Cape Town Sites”, wat op10 Junie deur die afdeling vir korporatiewedienste aan sekerheidsdiensverskaffers ge-stuur is, sê die Stad dit het onder hul aandag

gekom dat daar steeds buitelanders is wat bypersele van die Stad werk. “As ’n diensver-skaffer van die Stad en die feit dat daar reedsoor die wetgewing rakende PSIRA (die regu-leerder van die sekerheidsindustrie in Suid-Afrika) gekommunikeer is, is ons verpligom op te tree en die verwydering van daar-die lede af te dwing,” lui die brief.

KontrakbreukDan word die maatskappye gewaarsku dat

indien hulle nie aan die versoek gehoor geenie, hulle kontrakbreuk pleeg en hul kon-trakte kan verloor.

Jermaine Telemachus, departementshoofby Inferno-Sekerheidsdienste in Goodwood,sê die maatskappy was geskok toe hulle diebrief ontvang. “Ons eerste reaksie was omaandag aan die instruksie te gee sodat onsnie kontrakbreuk pleeg nie. Die situasie het

ons onkant gevang en ons voel baie sleg oordie werkers,” sê Telemachus. Hy sê ná ’n ver-gadering met die Stad is alle onduidelikhedeopgeklaar. “Dit blyk dat sommige maatskap-pye tot 30 onwettige mense aangestel het.Ons papierwerk was gelukkig in orde, maardie onsekerheid het gemaak dat 40 % vanons personeel besluit het om te waai.”

Die Stad se Xanthea Limberg, burgemees-terskomiteelid vir korporatiewe dienste, sêdie Stad het nie ’n probleem daarmee dat se-kerheidsmaatskappye buitelanders aanstelnie. “Die Stad se sekerheidstenders bepaaldat alle sekerheidsbeamptes wat op perselevan die Stad werk in terme van PSIRA-regu-lasies, geregistreer is. Wanneer dit onder dieaandag van stadsamptenare kom dat ’ndiensverskaffer nie by die reëls hou nie, isons wetlik verplig op tree,” sê Limberg.

Die Stad is onlangs daarvan verwittig dat

sommige sekerheidsbeamptes nie geregi-streer is nie.

Registrasie“Ons het versoek dat diensverskaffers be-

wyse van registrasie bring en ’n redeliketydsraamwerk is gegee waarin maatskap-pye inligting moes verskaf. Sommige maat-skappye het self besluit om sekerheidsbe-amptes te verwyder omdat hul inligting nieonmiddellik beskikbaar was nie. “Die Stadhet nie ’n instruksie gegee dat ’n sekere wagof groep verwyder word nie, ons het slegs ge-vra vir bewys van registrasie. Toe die doku-mentasie beskikbaar gestel is, is sekerheids-beamptes heraangestel by die persele waar-by hulle was,” verduidelik Limberg.

Sy sê ’n ondersoek is tans aan die gang omelke gekontrakteerde sekerheidswag se PSI-RA-registrasie na te gaan.

Die brandweer in Goodwood het Donderdagafskeid geneem van ’n lid wat reeds 30 jaarin dié diens was.Darren Upton Jones is Donderdag tydens

’n formele seremonie van die brandweer be-grawe.Jones het op 4 Junie 1984 by die brandweer

aangesluit en was ’n lid totdat hy op 4 Juliein die Panorama-hospitaal aan kanker ge-sterf het.Theo Layne, stasiebevelvoerder, sê Jones

was ’n nederige mens met ’n positiewe ge-sindheid. “Hy het altyd ’n glimlag en ’n ge-willige hand gehad vir almal. As vriend en

mentor gaan ons hom geweldigmis,” sê Lay-ne.In sy jare by die brandweer het Jones ver-

skeie vaardighede en verantwoordelikhedegekry. Hy was onder meer vuur-en lewens-veiligheidsopvoeder, noodreddingsmotor-bestuurder, gevorderde nood-assistent ennoodontrekkingsbeampte.Ná die afstigting van die Brooklyn-brand-

En toe was daar een.Twee weke ná daar begin is met die ver-

Pearl Scheepers het besluit om haarman – dit was sy tweede huwelik– ’n kans te gee, al was hy reeds

Dié 45-jarige man, van Kempenville inBellville, het toe op die vlug geslaan,maar is Sondag in Goodwood in hegtenisgeneem deur die Bellville-polisie sespeurtak. Sy naam is aan TygerBurgerbekend, maar hy mag nie genoem wordalvorens hy nie in die moordverhoor ge-pleit het nie.

Die oorledene, Pearl Scheepers (45), se22-jarige seun Charl, het Donderdag-aand op sy ma se liggaam afgekom, hetkapt. Fienie Nimb, woorvoerder van dieBellville-polisie, gesê.

Pearl se vriendin Natacha Wads-worth, ’n fotograaf wat onder meer Pearlse huwelik met die verdagte, asook haarseun se matriekafskeid, gefotografeerhet, is steeds baie hartseer oor Pearl.

“Ek het verskeie kere foto’s geneemvan Pearl. Ons was vriendinne. Pearlwas die tipe mens wat altyd die mooi in’n mens raakgesien het. Sy sou haar laas-te broodjie gee vir iemand wat nie hetnie,” het Natacha gesê.

“(Sy was) ’n hardegat-mens wat ’nbaie sagte klein hart gehad het. Maaknie saak wat aangegaan het in haar lewenie, wát gebeur het nie, sy het opgestaanen aangegaan – met ’n glimlag op haargesig en altyd ’n mooi woord.”

Nimb sê daar was geen argument tus-sen die paar ten tyde van die voorval nie,en dat haar seun omstreeks 22:30 Don-derdagaand haar liggaam in die huis ge-vind het. Pearl het die Vrydagoggend om03:00 in die Tygerberg-hospitaal beswykaan kopbeserings, het Nimb bevestig.

Nimb sê ao. Shaun Jansen van dieBellville-polisie se speurtak het sedertdie Donderdagaand na die wit bakkie ge-soek waarin die verdagte op die vlug ge-slaan het.

Die polisie vermoed dat die moorddwelmverwant was en het van meet afvermoed dat die verdagte iewers inGoodwood skuil, sê Nimb.

Ten tye van die voorval het die verdag-te die huis verlaat met sy vrou se hand-sak, met al haar kredietkaarte daarin,asook ’n selfoon en ’n stel sleutels.

Cops bust crimein GoodwoodT heGoodwood police have had some

significant success in catching crimi-nals red-handed.

Along with some help from beady-eyedresidents, a total of 11 suspects were arre-sted this month.OnMonday 7 July at 15:20, constables Si-

yabonga Sobuza and Purdon Combrink at-tended to a housebreaking-in-progress atVan Riebeeck Street in Goodwood. A resi-dent living at a house nearby spotted twosuspects tampering with the lock at theback door. They eventually broke the lock,but the police arrived on the scene just intime and the suspects fled on foot, with theneighbour and police in hot pursuit. Bothsuspects were arrested immediately.In another housebreaking incident,

members of the community assisted in thearrest of two housebreakers. Around 10:00on Tuesday 8 July, a builder was workingin De Villiers Street when he saw two sus-pects leaving a neighbouring house carry-ing bulky bags. The builder knew that the-rewasnobody at homeandquickly alertedthe police.When the suspects started running

away, the builder, bolstered by a smallgroupof local residents, gave chase andap-prehended both suspects.Stolen goods to the value of R22 500 were

recovered and both 19-year-old suspectsappeared in the Goodwood Magistrate’sCourt on a charge of housebreaking.In another incident, four men found

themselves behind bars mere minutes af-ter attempting to rob someone.On Thursday 10 July at 04:00, a man was

waiting for a train at Goodwood railwaystation when he was approached by fourmen. After asking him for money, theyproceeded to search his pockets. The four

suspects thenwalked awaywith the victim’strain ticket, bag and some cash.The complainant immediately called the

police, who reacted within minutes. Consta-bles Purdon Combrink and Siyabonga Sobu-zo found two suspects hiding under aNissanbakkie opposite the station. They searchedthem and found the tell-tale train ticket intheir possession.After obtaining a descripti-on, the constables patrolled the area andfound the other two suspects in TownsendStreet, the victim’s bag in their possession.The suspects, aged between 18 and 44, ap-

peared in court on robbery charges. The po-lice hope that the spate of smash-and-grabrobberies in Vanguard Drive will cease asa result of these arrests.OnWednesday 9 July at about 19:30, three

suspects smashed thewindows of awoman’scar, stealingherhandbag and fleeing into so-me nearby bushes.Members of the Goodwood police and

Goodwood armed patrol managed to arresttwo of the suspects. The 19 and 27-year-oldmen appeared in court on a charge of theftout of motor vehicle.Then, on Thursday 3 July, a suspect was

caught red-handed for housebreaking. Atabout 03:50, the owner of a business in Soco-ny Road noticed that his cellphone, which islinked to the business’ silent alarm, was rin-ging.Upon arriving at the scene, he heard foot-

steps on the roof. On closer inspection, hefound a big hole in the roof where a 24-year-old female suspect was trapped on the roof.After apprehending her, he handed her overto theGoodwood officers. TheGoodwood Po-lice wish to to thank the business-owner forhis quick response, as well as extend a voteof thanks to all members of the communityfor their involvement in combating crime.

woners van Wessel Lourenssingel se onte-vredenheid oor die vervalle toestand van diestraat. Fernando Smit, ’n inwoner van diéstraat, sê dit is nou reggemaak,maar die her-stelwerk was “pateties”. “Ek kan net sowelsement ingegooi het. Die herstelwerk sal se-ker darem vir die volgende week of twee houtotdat dit weer uitgery is op ander plekke,”sê Smit. Hy het sy ongelukkigheid aan dieraadslid vir die gebied, Sakkie Pretorius,deurgegee.

Pretorius het op sy beurt belowe om aan-dag daaraan te gee. Dit blyk dat Pretorius sybelofte gestand gedoen het, want Deon Bothavan die Stad se vervoer-afdeling het bevestigdat hulle aandag gee aan die probleem. “Daargaan gedurende die nuwe finansiële jaar her-seëlwerk gedoen word op gedeeltes van Janvan Riebeeck en Wessel Lourens. Die depothou net die gate toe sodat die pad gangbaarbly,” sê Botha.Hierdie antwoord stel egter nie vir Smit te-

vrede nie. “Meneer Botha, ek is bly om dienuus te hoor, maar kan nie glo dat u praatvan ‘in die finansiële jaar’ nie. Dit is nie aan-vaarbaar nie en ek sien jou boodskap as ’nblote troos. My belasting is op datum en ekdring aan op dienste. Ek beskou jou troos-antwoord as onsin,” skryf Smit in ’n strie-mende e-pos aan Botha.

rested.Last week Thursday, police sent word

that a burglary had just taken place inMonte Vista. Because Monte Vista isright next door to the Bothasig policingarea, Sergeant Phambili Gcwabe andConstable Clifford Jaftha, were also onthe lookout for any suspects.Along Montague Drive, they came

across three suspicious-lookingmen sit-ting inside a silver Renault Clio. Boththe vehicle and suspects were searchedand a screwdriver was found hidden inthe dashboard. In the boot, a crowbarwas discovered hidden underneath so-me clothes.All three suspects were arrested for

the possession of housebreaking imple-ments and were detained at Goodwoodpolice station.The followingmorning, one of the sus-

pects was also linked to other burglarycases in the Bothasig and Pinelands are-as. It is believed that the suspects aremembers of a syndicate which usescrowbars to gain entry to residences.

Baie het vir my gesê dierondtrek sal die kinders seopvoeding benadeel. Ek ver-staan nie waarom nie, wantalle skole het dieselfde leer-planne. Al wat ons as ouersmoet doen, is om tyd af teknyp om ons kinders te helpmet skoolwerk.

Ons kan nie verwag onskinders moet konsentreer indie skool terwyl hulle hulbekommer oor ouers se proble-me tuis nie.

Soms weet ek nie waar dievolgende brood of vanaand sebord kos vandaan sal kom nie,maar dit is my probleem ennie my kinders s’n nie.

Al bekommernis wat ’n kindmoet hê, is om goed te presteerop skool om ’n beter toekomsvir homself te bou.

Ouers, daar is nog tyd. Neemjou posisie in as ouer.

Leer jou kind dat daar ’nverskil tussen ’n ouer en kindis.

Keen to show off their newly discovered ta-lents, employees of the Shoprite Group ha-ve the opportunity to shine in the Topstarscompetition.

Every year for the last eight years, theTopstars singers get the chance for their vo-ices to be heard. But this year, the competi-tion’s top contestants took it a big step fur-ther: having their songs recorded on theAllstars CD.

Twelve top singers from the competiti-on’s history have been a part of creatingthis album, and six of them are from CapeTown.

“Every single voice on this album is aShoprite worker’s voice,” says Topstarsproducer, Mynie Grové proudly.

The album is made up of 12 tracks, sevenof which are original and all chosen fortheir meaningful and motivational messa-ges. Abigail Andrews, who works at Chec-kers Cobble Walk, says the recording expe-rience has been amazing. “You’re in this si-tuation where you never thought youwould be, and it’s like something that hap-pened overnight,” she says. Because she lo-ves what she’s doing, even when she’s tired,she can “go on” as if she had just startedher day, which is just as well, as the teamare busy preparing for a roadshow that willsee them performing all over the country.

The experience has made the group soclose that they all feel like a family. “We fitlike a glove we can’t go without each other,”says Abigail.

The album was recorded in bits and pie-ces and Abigail says she often couldn’t be-lieve it was her singing when she heard thefinished product.

Jo-Ann Daniels from Delft started out cle-aning chicken at a Hungry Lion outlet in2010. She says because of all the opportuni-ties Shoprite has given her, she now worksas a payroll clerk at Shoprite’s Western Ca-pe head office.

The Topstars contestants are assigned amentor and receive coaching as part of thecompetition. Jo-Ann says she has learnt agreat deal that she can apply to her perso-nal life, her work environment and hercommunity. In short, the competition hasmade her a better person and taught hermore about herself. “I have learnt thatwhen I believe in something, I can actuallydo it,” she says.

Vocal coach, Heinrich Frans, who was al-so involved in arranging the album, says:“These singers were just the most amazingsouls and spirits to work with.”

Mitchell’s Plain’s Zaheer Otto, whoworks at DC Dry Goods Bolt Avenue, haswalked a five year road with Topstars. “Ittakes your mind away from everything,” hesays. The other local singers on the albumare Bernard Jackson (Checkers Hyper, Pa-row), Mario Speelman (Checkers Oakdale)and Zola Ngwenze (Shoprite Khayalitsha).

The group will be back in Cape Town onTuesday 22 July, when the Topstars Roads-how will perform at Ratanga Junction.

The Allstars CD will be available at allShoprite Group stores from the middle ofJuly.

Carruthers performed beautifully, as hisJuno SS3 swiftly dealt with a Porsche thathad been strengthened by top Gautenger An-

drew Culbert and Durban’s Sun Moodley,who is also the Big Foot Express category’ssponsor. Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis andMoodley finished second and third in thefirst race, with Jarvis (again), and Culbertfilling the second positions.

Despite not setting the quickest qualifyingtime, Drotshie was also in a destructivemood in the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Carevents. His bulky Chev Commodore GS fi-nished well ahead of Eric van der Merwe

(Porsche 944 turbo) and Jaco Lambert (VWFox) in the first race, with a Porsche powe-red Lourens Bester and Van der Merwe fil-ling these positions in the second.

The Mutlu Battery Classic Car categoryprovided a platform for another double vic-tory, this time for veteran Richard Quixley.But the Datsun 240Z driver was overshado-wed by Trevor Momberg’s V6 Ford Capri inboth races, with Vance Kearney (Ford CapriPerana) taking third in the first race.

The second Classic shootout was red flag-ged when Johan Swart’s VW Scirocco cras-hed into the barrier wall at the exit of theEngen corner. Luckily, with the results jud-ged from their positions on the final comple-ted lap, Swart was awarded third place.Overall class victories went to Dave Alha-deff (B: Alfa), Herman de Kock (C: Ford Es-cort), and Jan-Willem de la Port (D: Chev Ca-nAm).

The quality of Masters V8 events easilycompensated for their lack of quantity asCraig Jarvis and Franco Donadio fought itout in the last two events. After sharing firstand second places, they were followed acrossthe line by Richard Schreuder in the firstand Paolo Cavalieri in the second.

The Makita Supercar events were possi-bly even closer, as Steve McCarthy was nomore than a hair’s breadth ahead of Nick Ad-cock when the flag came out at the end oftheir first race. They switched positions inthe final, with Adcock having just enough ofan advantage to clinch the overall verdict.

The third places were claimed by Brad Wa-deley and Gareth Easom, who was also ad-judged the overall winner of the Silver class,despite starting from the back of the grid af-ter missing the qualifying sessions. TheBronze class went to Carl Nel.

Sean le Riche’s 1.7 litre Formula Renaultwas unchallenged in the single seater For-mula Libre events. He was followed by theB and C class winners, Rassie Erasmus (For-mula Ford Ray) and Stephen Schemel (For-mula Vee Rhema), in both races.

“We are all very excited with the win, butI have to say it has been a stressful twodays,” said WP manager, Frikkie Coetzer.“Our game against the Golden Lions wasperhaps the hardest game of the tournamentas they are physically strong and came at uswith no mercy. But we managed to beatthem. Today’s game was perhaps not asphysically challenging, but the Blue Bulls

play a good tactical game. We had to changeour game plan to introduce a combinationof both strength and tactics, which workedin our favour in the end.”

This win means that WP has completed aCoca-Cola Youth Rugby Week treble follo-wing the WP u-13’s successfully defendingtheir u-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week title lastweek. The u-18 Coca-Cola Academy Week isdrawing to a close in Worcester this week.

It looked like the Blue Bulls were comingback into the game when WP conceded a pen-alty which Ruan De Swardt slotted to bringProvince’s lead down to 8 points.

But WP was tight on defense and counte-red well off the Blue Bulls’ kicks. Lombardand the Western Province backline wereslick and fluid in their play and they con-

stantly kept the ball in their possession,making it difficult for the Bulls to attack.The Western Province 8th man delivered

a try for his team in the 37th minute, therebyextending his team’s lead to 15 points, follo-wed by Lombard’s conversion.

Western Province continued to press onrelentlessly and were awarded with a try asJade Fortune dotted down.

Then, the match heated up as the Bulls’Gerald Lowe was sin-binned, and DamianWillemse of WP followed hot on his heels.The Bulls were finally awarded a try as LukeFortuin scored, with only one minute left onthe clock.
