Goodwood Police are concernedabout a trend developing of munici-pal dirt bins being stolen in the area.As a result, the police are now urg-

ing the community to help themcurbthis crime by marking their bins,asking their neighbours to returnbins to a safe place after being emp-tied, report anybody pushing a binaround in the street and to not throwheavyobjects likebricksand sand in-side the bins.The final request is made because

the bin can fall into the refuse remov-al truck when being emptied.Bins can often be used for trans-

porting stolen goods.

The NSRI Rescue Station in Melkbosstrandwill once again hold its “Water Weights NSRIAdventure Day” in the Koeberg Nature Re-serve on Saturday 29 September.Gates will open at 10:00 for the public who

want to come and enjoy a day in this amazingreserve.This is an unique event as it is the only time

that members of the public will be able to tourthe reserve in their 4x4 vehicle or on theirquad bike.The 4x4 tour takes drivers on a four-hour

drive that takes in some of themost breathtak-ing views of the coast and Table Mountain.Quad bikers will experience a very excitingthree-hour tour through some of themost pris-tine areas of the reserve.This is a popular event so booking is abso-

lutely essential. The cost is R350 per vehicleand R200 per quad bike.At least five SA Bands which includes the

ever popular “Rocking Horse” will entertainthe crowd throughout the afternoon so fami-lies are encourage to come along and enjoy therelaxed atmosphere.There will be a potjie competition in the af-

ternoon with judging taking place at around16:00. Potjie meals will then be on sale.During the day there are plenty of activities

for thewhole family suchas bubble balls, adultand children’s jumping castles, rodeo bull andmany more. Some events will be charged for.Entry to the arena is free and visitors will

be able to hike or cycle the reserve or simplyenjoy something to eat while listening to somegoodmusic. There will also be plenty of exhib-its with goods for sale.All proceeds of the day go toward meeting

the operational cost of the NSRI Rescue Sta-tion in Melkbosstrand. in a bid to walk awaywith the best hat titleon Saturday.Some seniors used flowers, others used

grass, glitter and even teddy bears demon-strating their unique personalities.A jovial feeling was in the air, as the sen-

iors danced and sang along to the musicthat was provided by Graham Jarman, oneof the seniors’ sons.The day was initiated by Marie Preto-

rius, who also gives craft classes at thehome. She then got others involved whomade the day a success.“Every day the seniors just sit here and

follow the same routine and I wanted to dosomething different for them,” she says.“That’s when we decided this would be

the perfect idea to get all the seniors in-volved. They were so excited when theyheardabout it andwanted to create thebesthat they could. These seniors put in theirtime to create the best hats they could.”Rose Jarman, one of the seniors, says she

thoroughly enjoyed the day.“This is really something great they did

Law Enforcement officers have been con-ducting “zero tolerance” operations in Mil-nerton, Table View, Bothasig and Melk-bosstrand recently.Officers from the Bylaw Enforcement

Unit, the Metals Theft Unit, the InformalTrading Unit, the Vice Squad, the DisplacedPeoples’ Unit, the Anti-Land Invasion Unitand the Rapid Response Unit and an officerfrom the Animal Pound all took part.TheweeklyZeroTolerance Initiative is an

effective and successful strategy.In Milnerton eight fines of a R1 000 each

were issued to vehicles with no business li-cences, two fines of R500 each to driverswhopicked up passengers in non-designatedplaces, three of R500 each for vehicles withfaulty hooters and three of R800 each for un-licensed vehicles.In Bothasig nine fines of R800 were issued

for unlicensed vehicles and one of R500 fordriving without a number plate.In Table View, 10 fines of R800 each were

issued for unlicensed vehicles, five of R500each for driving without a licence and 15trollies were confiscated.In Melkbosstrand two fines of R300 were

The park adjacent to the Edge-mead Neighbourhood Watch(ENW) sector office in West-hoven Street was the focus of anArbour Day tree planting cere-mony on Saturday.

According to the chairperson ofthe De Grendel Subcouncil, Alder-man James Vos, the objective oftree planting ceremonies is to cre-ate awareness of the importance oftrees and the environment.“It is the responsibility of every

person to protect existing trees andencourage the planting of new onesto stem the negative consequencesof carbon emissions,” says Vos.The City of Cape Town has a Tree

Protection Policy, which protectsmature trees from being removed

fact that trees are essential in theproductionof oxygenand the reduc-tion of hot house gases.“The City of Cape Town therefore

son, adds: “Judgingby the availablefacts on global warming, we as hu-man beings have a poor trackrecord in caring and managing ourenvironment.”TheENWisanoperational organ-

Their latest venture was to erecta “De Grendel Lions Club” sign-board at the clinic on Saturday.The ceremony was also attended

by ward councillor and Lion JamesVos.The City of Cape Town has vari-

ous successful partnerships atmany clinics throughout themetropole. Vos says that healthpartnerships can involve not onlythe donations of equipment, but anoften even more valuable contribu-tion – the time, expertise and com-

passion of those who voluntarilyserve on health forums and otherservices to assist the elderly, thefrail and the sick people who attendthe clinics.To put this into action Vos with

the support of community organisa-tions have organised several cam-paigns at theBothasigClinic andhewas recently joined by the local Li-ons Club.Club president Martin Kallis de-

scribes their work at the clinic asvery rewarding and worthwhilebased on their track record in thecommunity of giving their time andresources to those in need.Vos elaborates that he hopes this

latest partnership will encouragemore organisations and residentsto become part of the primary

healthcare system. He further ex-plains that these partnerships areto strengthen the hands of thehealthcare workers by working to-gether with the Health Departmentand Community Health Forum todevelop a plan of action to promotehealth awareness and programmeswithin the community.Services being offered at the

Bothasig Clinic are neonatal, in-cluding immunisation, mother andbaby care, geriatric, providing com-passionate and caring treatment,medication for chronically ill elder-ly citizens, etc.In terms of a recent service level

agreement between Vos and thehealth authorities, additional sys-tems are being considered and im-plemented.

Local guitarist, Philip Malan,calls his captivating music“acoustic, finger-style guitar”.

His brand of instrumentalmusichas seen him win some big compe-titions. The most recent of these isthe Bushmills Band Search compe-tition. His prize is a recording tothe value of R10 000 at Studio Sev-en.Last year he won the “Home of

the acoustic guitar” competition,sponsored by Marshall Music,which sawhimearninganopening

slot for the first Folk and AcousticFestival that was held at the CapeTown International ConventionCentre.After having “bashed around on

the piano and recorder”, Philippicked up the guitar at the age ofnine.“My whole family plays music,”

he says, adding that his mother isa music teacher.Philip says he played electric at

school, buthe trained classically atStellenbosch University for fouryears.While he has played in bands be-

fore, he has been busywithhis cur-

rent solo project for about twoyears now.Philip explains his sound: “It’s

an instrumental style of acousticmusic. It’s a technique that encom-passes a range of styles. It definite-ly has a local edge to it.”Philip says he is fascinated by lo-

calmusic history, from the Kaapseklopse to ghoema, and that he triesto incorporate these elements inhis compositions.One of Philip’s songs will also be

used as part of Stellenbosch 360, atourism advertising campaign.Philip points out that, having livedin Stellenbosch for 24 years, he is

also a Stellenbosch local.His first album, Faithful, a col-

Project Proposal (alternatives are being considered):The processing facility and associated infrastructure for the proposed anaerobic biogasdigester plant would consist of:1. A cogeneration plant which would consist of one co-generator of 635 kW capacityelectrical power

2. Digesters: 1 primary circular digester of 26 m diameter, 6 m in height, 1 secondarycircular digester 26 m diameter, 6 m in height, each would have a volume of 5.519 m

3. Technology employed; the digesters would be mixed by special rotatory blade mixer,complete mix digester operated under mesophilic conditions.

4. Loading tanks “GHIOTTONE” with hopper for biomass loading including metering screws(capacity 50 m³ each).

5. As a second phase, a third digester could be added to increase the plant capacity to1.27 mW. The total area to be covered by the proposed infrastructure (first and secondphase included) would be approximately 1.7 ha

South Africans did themselves proud inthe 14th International Braille Chess Ol-ympiad recently held in Chennai, Indiaby achieving their best finish ever at theevent.

There were 25 teams from 24 countriesand 115 players battling it out for top hon-ours.“South Africa had two wins and two

draws which gave us six match points. Wehad 12,5 board points, the same as in 2000and in 2008. These six match points wasSouth Africa’s best ever. We finished in22ndplace out of 25 teams.At the beginningof the Olympiad we were rated 25th out of25.“The Olympiad was won by Russia, but

with a much narrower margin than last

time. Ukraine again came second, Spainthird, Germany fourth and India fifth. Theupset of the tournament was when Russialost to Spain in the third round.“Russia/Soviet Union has won every Ol-

ympiad since 1968, except 2004 when Po-land won and Russia placed second,” saidBrenda Leonard, treasurer of South Afri-can Braille Chess.It was also announced at the tournament

that Clyde Leonard (Bellville) SABCAchairperson was re-elected on the IBCACommittee.The next Olympiad will be held in 2017

in the former Yugoslavian republic ofMac-edonia. The tournament has been post-poned by a year due to teams not receivingfinancial assistance in the same year as theOlympic Games.

years coming from all communities. The children are placed by the Children’s Court for

an initial period of 2 years. Some of them, however, stays much longer. The Home

receives less than 50% of their required funds from the government. Therefore they
