According to him the best way to combat theproliferation of reeds is with fire, and therehas indeed been an application for a burningpermit in the area.Brenner says the City of Cape Town is be-

set with these reeds (Typha Capensis).“Yes, it is a city-wide problem. There are

acres and acres of it in the city,” she says,

before reiterating that reeds play a valuablerole in extracting nutrients from water sy-stem.This benefit doesnot stop the city from try-

ing to figure out how best to deal with the“reed-problem”.“One cannot just hack it away, because it

will grow again. It is also dangerous for wor-

kers to dig it out. Burning it is an option. Af-ter the burnwemight explore the possibilityof using non-toxic herbicidemade of naturalproducts, to prevent them growing back tooquickly.”Community Police Forum chairperson

Andrew Brace believes the proliferation ofreeds also pose a fire risk during summer.

Elkanha House were part of the program-me, which was introduced to businesseson Wednesday last week Wednesday atMitsubishi Motors in Paarden Eiland. The BBN “Future Smart” event was

considered a huge success by CEO JoeCook.“It was a huge breakthrough, with a

number businesses coming forward tojoin BBN,” he says.During the event guest speaker and “fu-

turist” Michael Lee delivered a rivetingtalk on South Africa’s possible future, andgavehisvociferous support forBBN’sleadership programme.

“I have never seen a plan as good asBBN’s for building a new generation ofentrepreneurs and innovators,” said Lee.It is recognised globally that there will

be little economic growth these days wit-hout massive development of entrepre-neurs. But you go one step further andbring in social entrepreneurship whichbuilds communities at the same time. Lo-ve it!”Cook said the event “fully justified the

years of work and focused effort to finallyproduce this all South African plan”.“I see it as a mandate to continue pus-

hing hard to establish a solid Business,Public and Youth SA Legacy Vision Part-nership.”BBN’s programme consists of a 4-tier

“There is a proverb that goes: don’t do tootherswhat youdon’twant done to yourself. It seems that unfortunately some people eit-her don’t understand that or they just don’tcare,” says a Table View resident who pre-fers to stay anonymous.Thewoman is referring to the “music that

gets so loud that it literally feels like yourheart wants to jump out of your chest”.Noise disturbance from clubs or parties,

especially those held in residential areas, seem to be a recurring bone of contentionamong Table View residents.TygerBurger recently reported on a club

in Parklands which got a R60 000 fine forcontravening various by-laws, and now the-re is appears to be one in Killarney Gardensthat is also overstepping the line.Last week Saturday an event akin to a

trance party was held in Killarney Gardensand, according to the Table View resident, only ended shortly before dawn on Sundaymorning.“I live near Koeberg Road, which is a bit

further away fromKillarney than DuNoon, but I can only imagine the noise that theyhad to endure. I even had my pillow overmy head, trying to sleep, yet the vibrationsof this non-stop boom-boom, nonsense-mu-sic went straight through our walls and pil-lows.At 03:30 I’dhad enoughandphoned thepolice and neighbourhood watch. They ex-plained to me that they had received nume-rous complaints from other citizens as wellabout this party, and that they were doingwhat they could to quiet them. Unfortunate-ly, neither the police nor neighbourhoodwatch had the power to stop them,” said theupset resident. The noise was apparently coming from a

club in Killarney Gardens.

Ward councillor of Table View, HeatherBrenner, said thebestway for the communi-ty to act against a club that keeps them upat night is to lodge complaints with the Li-quor Board.“Round aboutDecember night clubsmust

renew their licenses, which happens auto-matically if no objections have been madebefore hand,” said Brenner.“Themore complaints, the less likely that

a club’s licence will be renewed,” she says. The anonymous complainant hopes the

rumour about the “trance party” being heldonce a month isn’t true.“There are elderly people, sick people, pe-

ople with small children and babies whodon’t know what is going on, or why theycannot sleep. These party-goers and organi-zers are welcome to hop around like apesand intoxicate themselves as long as they doit where it doesn’t disturb others,” said theTable View resident.

‘Trance party’ keeps residents up all night

Futurist Michael Lee, left, from Durbanvilleused the opportunity at last week’s BBNFuture Smart event to promote his newbook. Here he is with BBN’s CEO, Joe Cook.

Petition battle for speed bumpsANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The likelihood that Koeberg Road willever get speed humps is slim to none, but that didn’t stop Bridget Edwards

trying to convince authorities that it wouldbe for the greater good.Edwards got 226 signatures from people

who support her petition to have the trafficcalming measure implemented on the busyroad.“After my boyfriend’s son was knocked

over in a hit and run (accident) on this roadthismorning, I decided enoughwas enough.Toomany innocent childrenare losing theirlives on this stretch of road and nobody isdoing anything about it,” said Edwards.“Taxis are running red lights, driving

along the shoulder of the road and mowingdown children left, right and centre. Thisneeds to end!”She specifically wants speed bumps built

in Koeberg Road, Milnerton, but there arepeople in Table View who also believe thiscould be a solution to some of the recklessdriving occuring there.Ward councillor Heather Brenner says,

however, that speed bumps are traditional-ly reserved for residential areas, and are of-ten used in conjuctionwith pedestrian cros-sings.

Despite Edwards’ plea directed at buil-ding speed bumps near pedestrian cros-sings, the head of Transport Network Deve-lopment Garth Elliot, said this would not beconsidered at this stage.Elliot says inhis correspondencewithEd-

wards on the www.gopetition.com website:“In terms of the City of Cape Town’s TrafficCalming Policy, the installation of trafficcalming measures on a route of this nature(a higher order numbered metropolitanroute) is not supported. From a transportengineering perspective, a signalised pedes-trian crossing is deemed to be amore appro-priate measure on a route of this nature, soas to accommodate safe crossing by pedes-trians whilemaintaining a reasonable levelof mobility.”The fact that Koeberg Road is a public

transport route means building speedbumps is very unlikely, since it will cause“discomfort to passengers when traversingraised traffic calming measures”.He adds that the city has recently instal-

leda signalisedpedestriancrossingnearYs-terplaat Primary School, as reported by Ty-gerBurger in October last year.TheCity is also in the process of installing

another signalised crossing at the libraryand clinic further north along Koeberg Ro-ad.In the formal correspondence, Edwards

insisted that signalised crossings are inef-fective.“You could install 100 of them along this

stretch and it will not help. All it will do isslow down the traffic,” she argues.Elliot admits that the success of any traf-

fic signal is largely dependent on voluntarylegal compliance by the motoring public, which Edwards believes most motorists ig-nore.Elliot maintains that there is still hope,

since he has approached the City TrafficServices Department for possible law enfor-cement interventions which could assist inthis regard. This department responded to the query

and told Elliot that “relevant actions interms of education and enforcementwill fol-low shortly”.Edwards now feels as if she is up against

“a great force”, and whether anything willever be done depends on getting more peo-ple to support her cause.“Next time I will need at least a thousand

signatures,” she says, but adds that the bat-tle for speed bumps might be over.Instead, she hopes that footbridges could

be built along Koeberg Road.

V If anyone wants to support Edwards in her callfor footbridges they can contact her on bridgetly[email protected].

Fashion gets tied to charity

Young model Hannah Eichler models the dressshe designed with help from her mom SimoneEichler.

It is said one can tell a lot about a man byhis choice of tie.But like any item of clothing, fashions

change and ties have been moved to theback of the closet. So where do old ties go?Well, Mrs Cape Town 2013, Chantal Wit-

thuhn, found a way to tie all those ties toge-ther and create something new from some-thing old, helping charity while she’s at it.Several years ago Chantal had an idea to

collect and use old ties to create new outfits.Using her platform as Mrs Cape Town,Chantal set out to identify three designersto implement this task. She cleverly hand-

picked three very diverse fashion designerswho were willing to volunteer their timeand skills to take on the task of creatingmasterpieces from old ties.Chantal launched the Save the Tie, Save

a Child project and so the project began.Over 4000 ties were donated and desig-

ners Hein Smit, Marshal Enyioma and Sa-skia Wicomb got to work.Models were sought and measurements

and fittingsmade. In total 42 garmentswerecreated from the old ties.OnFriday andSaturday evening a glamo-

rous fashion showcasewas hosted at theAllStar Theatre in Brackenfell, in aid of the

RoleModels charity organisation.Marshal Enyioma, from Nigeria, worked

his magic with designs that had a rich eth-nic element while SaskiaWicomb’s psyche-delic designs intrigued guests.Hein Smit’s feminine vintage collection

wowed the audience, ranging from a ‘Ladyin red’ dress fit for a queen, to a weddingdress for the prettiest bride. One of his creations fetched R5 000.Junior RoleModels SA titleholders also

designed tie-garments (with Mom’s assis-tance) and strutted down the catwalk.Plans are already underway for next ye-

ars event, featuring old buttons.

Designers Hein Smit (Tableview), Mrs Cape Town 2013 Chantal Witthuhn, Marshal Enyioma(Tableview) and Saskia Wicomb (Stellenbosch).

Tammy’s wedding cake comes out on topANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

What do you get when you add two ta-blespoons ofTammyJubber to threecups of The South African Wedding

Show, bake in a preheated oven at 160° andthen dust lightly with flour?

A Sunningdale resident with a GreatestBaker Award (lightly dusted with flour) ofcourse!

In 2009 Tammy’s first cake flopped awful-ly, but a liberal dose of tenacity and a lavishhelping of talent lifted her to the top of thecake-baking industry.

And there she is to be foundwith icing andcherries, frills and fancies. She recentlycompeted against esteemed bakers and, loand behold, her two wedding cake samplestook the cake. The public at CTICC cast theirvotes and it is now official – Tammy’s first

sample (a chocolate mud cake with a choco-late mousse filling and a belgian chocolateganache) and her second sample (lemonsponge with a lemon curd buttercream) arethe desserts of champions!

“I got an invitation by mail from the Wed-ding Show organisers to compete and decli-ned almost immediately, due to the price toenter,” says Tammy.

“I’m a mom who works from home. Theentry fee, printing business cards and pos-ters, and baking two samples would costabout R10 000! I posted my intentions of ra-ther entering next year on my Facebook pa-ge. Four hours later my friends raised themoney,” she laughs.

Raising the money was a piece of cakewhen compared to the “big bake”, whereTammy had to prepare about 3 000 samples.

She used 188 eggs in the process!Tammy also had to devise a cake design

in order to enter. One of the days of the CTICC event was so

busy that people queued for up to 45minutesto taste competitors’ samples.

“My onlywishwas that I didn’t embarrassmyself. I was competing against bakeries af-ter all,” she quips.

A few days later Tammy received the callthat she had actually won.

“I was shocked! ‘Excuse me? Did you pho-ne the right person?’,” Tammy recalls as-king.

No-one was home at that stage, and sinceshe had to tell someone, she went over to theneighbours. Later, when she told her mom,she apparently had to repeat herself three ti-mes before her mother grasped what hadhappened. The winner of the event will begetting a half-page free advertisement inDieBurger to the value of R50 000 and The SAWedding Show will also be advertising for

Tammy on their social media platforms. If one had to combine this with the 800 bu-

siness cards she distributed during theshow, then it’s fair to say that Tammymighthave to hire an assistant to answer the pho-ne. She has come a long way since she firsttried her hand at baking a cake in 2009. Hercake was doomed from the start.

One year later she did a brief cupcakeworkshop and then she taught herself howto create that “perfect” cake.

Even today that cake is still to be baked.“Everytimeyoubake you learn something

new. Sometimes a cake might not seemright, but then I just go and do somethingelse, come back later you might find a newapproach. It’s always a learning curve. The-re’s not a cake-baker out there who can saythey know it all,” she concludes.

The city council has approved the awar-ding of a long-term contract for the designand construction monitoring of the propo-sed Contermanskloof reservoir. The contract includes the supplementa-

ry infrastructure to ensure water securityto the greater Blaauwberg area.Mayco member for utility services, Er-

nest Sonnenberg, saud theBlaauwbergDe-velopment Area (BDA) is one of the fastestgrowing development corridors in thecountry. However, he said, “the limited bulk wa-

ter infrastructure in this area has beenidentified as a significant obstacle to futu-re developments and as such the construc-tion of the Contermanskloof reservoir

must be timeously planned and implemen-ted”. Once constructed, this new reservoirwill have a storage capacity of 100 mega li-tres (one mega litre is equal to one millionlitres). It will be supported by the necessa-ry infrastructure suchas reticulationpipe-lines that have already been commissio-ned to meet the future potable water de-mand of the greater Blaauwberg area. The cost of the project, which reflects the

city’s focus on infrastructure-led growthand development, is approximately R100million (R10million for the design and R90million for the construction).“Importantly, bulk water infrastructure

suchas reservoirs andpipelines, cannot beconstructed overnight. Due to the nature

and magnitude of this project the council,as required by the Municipal Finance Ma-nagement Act (MFMA), has approved thewater and sanitation department’s intentto award a long-term contract that will ex-tend beyond three financial years, thus ex-ceeding the relevant budget cycle,” saidSonnenberg. He said the city will benefit by appoin-

ting professional services without havingto re-tender after the three-year budget cy-cle because the rates of the professionalservices are fixed for the duration of thelong term contract.Funding is available in the approved

budget, aswell as thewater and sanitationdepartment’s ten-year budget plans.

Thanks to the unskilledmanagement of Eskom, we allhave to suffer with electricityshortages and load shedding.

The public, mainly house-holds and small businesses, will be punished for themistakes Eskom managementmade for many years. Now weare short on power duringpeak hours.

I have a better way of savingelectricity countrywide andwouldn’t really hurt anybody.

All advertising lights fromall businesses which are closedduring peak hours should beswitched off – includingadvertising boards and signson buildings, as well as thelights which light the front ofcommercial and governmentbuildings.

In addition, only everysecond street light on nationalroads should be switched on –all vehicles have their ownheadlights. To make it safer, reduce the speed limit from120km/h to 75km/h on nationalroads.

This should only happenduring peak hours. If this planwas implemented, the plannedcountry-wide load sheddingwould be not necessary.

I took a taxi to Parow Hyper-market last Tuesday morning,as I always do, and ended uplosing my wallet with all mycards and some money in thetaxi. Both the driver and theguard were Rastafarians.

I only realised my wallet wasmissing once I arrived at workan hour later.

The next morning I asked therank master at Roosendalwhether he had heard of awallet found in a taxi. I wastold the wallet was, indeed, found and handed-in at theirhead office.

Of course I had to identify

the items in the wallet, buteverything was still intact and Igot it back two days later.

To my surprise the moneyand all my cards were still inthe wallet.

I really did not expect to getmy wallet back and I’m soimpressed there are still peoplein society who do the rightthing, despite not knowing me.

I am very grateful to thedriver and guard, so I will begiving them a reward.

HOOFARTIKEL

SMSV I agree with Koert Meyer about thedeath penalty being a violent act (TB Letters, 18 June), but also want to remindhim that we live in a democratic country. We should be allowed our choice of whatwe want. If majority votes for the deathpenalty, so it be. Some are so violent, thedeath penalty should be appropriate tothose found guilty. - John Williams

V Ek wonder hoe laat begin die SekondêreSkool Scottsville? Leerders loop elke oggend na 08:00 rustig skool toe. Die onderwysdepartement moet iemand een oggend stuur om by die skoolhek te komstaan. - Anoniem

V Why are most street lights on during theday, when they keep threatening us withload shedding? Is that not wasting electricity? It does not rain everyday.

V Aan Koert Meyer wat so uitgesproke isteen doodstraf: My skoonsuster se 5jarige dogter is op haar skoot gedurende ’nrooftog doodgeskiet. As dit jou kind ofkleinkind was, en jy moet twee jaar lankdie trauma in die hof herleef, sou jy nogteen doodstraf wees? - A. Esterhuizen

V I am never going to commit murder, butfully support the death penalty as a deterrent. My brotherinlaw was murdered28 years ago and my sister still battles financially. The killer received 20 years injail. That is not justice. - Pat, Milnerton

V You need to purchase the MyCiTi myconnect card before Tuesday 1 July. It is agood investment. I paid R22 and boughtone for R35 after 1 July. MyCiTi rules! -Matt, Milnerton

V I’m in favour of the death penalty because it’s scriptural. Why must murdererslive at our expense, while their victims willnever have the right to live? Rapistsshould also be denied the right to live. -Anon, Durbanville

Cara Gorlei fromMilnerton played a bigrole in SouthAfrica’s successful defen-ce of theirAll-AfricaChallengeTrophy

title at Muthaiga Golf Club in Kenya recent-ly.

For the 11th time since theAll-AfricaChal-lenge Trophy (AACT) launched in 1992, aSouth African women’s amateur team clai-med success in the continent’smost prestigi-ous biennial championship.

Cara Gorlei, Magda Kruger and MichaelaFletcher showed the same tenacity, commit-ment and determination as their predeces-sors to ensure the country’s successful titledefence at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairo-bi.

Fletcher, from KwaZulu-Natal, birdiedthree par-fives and the par-four on her wayto a closing three-under-par 68 to safeguard

the team’s six stroke overnight lead.

11Stroke victoryWestern Province’s Gorlei added an 80,

whileKruger fromGautengNorth signed fora non-counting 81.

Rounds of 146, 148 and 148 secured an 11stroke victory for SouthAfrica on awinningscore of 442.

Meanwhile Kenya held up under hugepressure from Tanzania to combine for a fi-nal round 151 to clinch the runner-up spoton 453.

Tanzania took third on 456 after postinga final round 150, while Zambia claimedfourth on 472, finishing six strokes ahead ofneighbouring Zimbabwe.

Maritzburg’s Fletcher also claimed the In-dividual Competition on seven-over-par 220after carding rounds of 79, 73 and 68, whichwasalso the lowest roundof the tournament.

Gorlei took second, finishing five strokesbehind her compatriot, while Kruger finis-hed seventh overall on 233.

Tough opponents“We are very proud of this team, who did

an exceptionally good job against some verytough opponents,” said Womens Golf SouthAfrica president Karen Olivant.

“The course was quite challenging, butthey showed a lot of grit and determinationand didn’t let the course deter them fromtheir goal to defend the title.

“Michaela and Cara both contributed twogreat rounds to boost our chances, andMag-da was the only player in the field over 54holes to birdie the tough par-three second.“I am very proud of their performance andthey were fantastic ambassadors for SouthAfrica and Womens Golf South Africa.”

With a history spanning over 100 yearsand a reputation for being the best andmost challenging course, Royal CapeGolfClub will provide a fine test for the West-ern Cape regional elimination of the 20thWorld Golfers’ Championship on Friday1 August.

This year’s World Golfers’ Champion-ship celebrates 20 years of bringing golf-ers together to experience the pride ofrepresenting their country, while forgingnew friendships and business networksthrough their passion for the game at thesame time.

The tournament is a build-up to theWorld Final, which sees more than 40countries searching for their top amateurgolfers to battle players from across theworld at four ofKwaZulu-Natal’s champi-onship golf courses in October and No-vember.

Amateur golfers who believe they havethe drive to win must first enter the re-gional elimination to secure their spot onthe tee-off.

The top three winners in each flighting

(0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-15) win an all-expense paid entry to the South AfricanFinal, where the top two flighting win-ners will be selected for Team South Afri-ca One and Two.

SAREL BURGER

United FC edged out Invincible Cravenbywith a 60th minute goal by Ryan Jacobs toclaim a crucial three points in a NorthernSuburbs FA super league match at BishopLavis on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Winston Faulman said sometimesUnited FC have to play ugly in order to win

rather than play pretty and lose, referringto the scrappy 1-0 win.

“We created but could not convert ourchances, these things happen but you needto keep on playing, then the chances cameand we scored just after the break.

“They battled with the crosses into thepenalty area and we should have capitalizedon that aspect of the game. With Warren Van

Neel lurking in the box we always stood achance.”

Invincible Cravenby were the strongerteam on the day, and Faulman admits theyfought a tough, unflattering battle.

“Credit to the boys, they fought hard, theybattled and they won every second ball outthere. It was all heart and passion at the endof theday that gotus thewin,” saidFaulman.

Keegan Maart came close to equalizing inthe second half when he rose above the Uni-ted defence to meet Yaseen Vallie’s cornerkick on its apex, but he could not direct hisheader on target.

The visitors from Cravenby continued topress forward but the final pass could notfind the back of the net.

Bishop Lavis also beat Kuils River 3-1.
