ANDRÉ BAKKES @andrebakkes F rom now on Maggie Ward (67) will be keeping an eye on her beloved dogs from heaven. In a tragic conclusion to a remarkable life, Maggie passed away last week Thursday on the couch of a friend. She was evicted from her Parklands home at the beginning of October this year and has, since then, mostly lived in her car. Her heartfelt story was published in Ty- gerBurger and it was clear her dogs meant the world to her. Maggie’s “friends” were taken away from her when it was discovered that she no long- er had a place to stay. Maggie crept into readers’ hearts when it was revealed that she was dismayed about the possibility of never again reading the Bi- ble to her dogs. After her eviction, her favourite dog Cheeky was a constant companion. He protected her while she looked after him, but could not protect her from death. Table View police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daphne O’Reilly, said they have opened an inquest docket, and at the time of going to print they’re still waiting on the re- sults of the autopsy. No foul-play is suspected by the police. Maggie’s death has left her friends and family distraught. One of Maggie’s friends, and fellow dog- lover Cheryl-lyn Potgieter, remembers how Maggie once came to her house and burst in- to tears when she saw the dogs Cheryl-lyn was looking after at that stage. One was blind and another only had three legs. “It was apparently too traumatic for her to see all these happy dogs,” says Cheryl- lyn. V To page 2. The general entertain-ment of the day included a ballet, sports acti-vities, activity tables such as decorate-a-cupcake, play dough fun, loom bands andface painting.

The day would not have been possible wit-hout the joint collaboration of the dedicatedstaff of Elundini, all sponsors, Santa’s hel-pers in the kitchen and the Milnerton FireDepartment all lending a hand to bringChristmas cheer to the children of Elundini.

Founded in 2008 by principal Indy Kawa-na who saw the growing need for a specialcare centre, the Elundini Centre was esta-blished to meet the physical and emotionalneeds of mentally and physically challengedchildren in the areas of Dunoon, Table Viewand Joe Slovo Park.

“Her financial situation was dire, but a lotof us helped where we could. She slept in hercar at Merlot Centre.”

According to her, Maggie always knew shewould “take care of her dogs” if somethinghad to happen.

Cheryl-lyn did just this, and she reportsthat besides a new home for Cheeky, theother dogs are doing well thanks to FallenAngels.

They are now happily running around ona vast piece of land.

Her son and radio personality, Ian Ward, could not be reached for comment.

News of Maggie’s passing received tou-ching responses on the Table ViewNeighbours Facebook page.

She was known for her beautiful voice, sonone of the dedications were so apt as theone in which a resident of Table View wrote:“You can sing with the angels now.”

Maggie’s funeral will be held on Friday 19December at the Church on the Rise Blou-berg.

The church is in Porterfield Road.

Eight people were injured last Wednesdaymorning when three vehicles collided on theR27, close to the Koeberg Power Station turnoff.

ER24 spokesperson Pieter Rossouw said abus, a light delivery truck and light motorvehicle collided.

“The scene was covered in shattered glassand the light delivery truck was pushed offof the road,” said Rossouw.

“When our paramedics arrived on scenethey found five people with minor injuriesand three people with moderate injuries.Fortunately no one sustained any serious in-juries. ER24 paramedics assisted in treatingthe patients and transported three patientsto the New Somerset Hospital in Cape Townfor further treatment. The remainder of thepatients were transported to local hospitalsin the area.”

The cause of the accident is still unknown.

Eight injured in collision near Koeberg

Eight people were injured on the West Coast Road last week Wednesday.

A total of 47 teams from 20 depots are res-ponsible for repairing potholes and in at le-ast 80% of the cases the teams meet the Ci-ty’s own benchmark of fixing a pothole wit-hin 72 hours of it being reported.

“This is a very high standard to maintain, given the fact that the city’s road networkcomprises 10 629 kilometres and every inchof it has to be managed by TCT,” says citymayco member for transport for Cape Town(TCT), Brett Herron.

“One must admit that it is quite an achie-vement that over 80% of potholes are fixedwithin three days when each of the 47 teamshas to repair at least 260 potholes a month.”

Residents report at least 250 potholes tothe city’s call centre every week and theother potholes are identified by the supervi-sory staff at TCT’s depots. “A C3 (fault re-

porting notification) is generated for everypothole that a resident reports via the city’sfault reporting system. This report is sentto the relevant area depot, which passes iton to the responsible crew to undertake therepairs. This administrative process can ta-ke up to a day, but in most cases it is sortedout within a matter of hours. The team willinspect the site and make the road safe forroad users, either by repairing the potholethere and then or by demarcating the areaif an immediate repair is not possible.

“Sometimes delays are caused by incle-ment weather, the unavailability of asphaltto fix the potholes, or the breakdown ofequipment. However, one of our biggestchallenges is that the wrong information inrelation to the location and address of thepothole is often reflected on the C3 notifica-

tion system. In this instance residents cangreatly assist TCT by providing the correctaddresses.’’

The city does proactive maintenancework as well, such as the resealing and re-surfacing of roads to prevent potholes. “Themajority of potholes form when water pene-trates the asphalt due to the cracking of theroad’s asphalt surfacing; when roads haveto carry higher volumes of traffic than theywere originally designed to carry; or whenroutine maintenance has not taken placedue to funding availability. Grey water di-scharge onto roads and other sources of wa-ter such as natural underground springsare also contributing factors.

“In the current financial year (2014/15),TCT will spend nearly R464 million on roadmaintenance,” said Herron.

Potholes repaired in 72 hours

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

There was nothing odd about the way Kru-ben Moodliar celebrated his 71st birthday.

He woke up at 03:00 to the sound of sherpassinging happy birthday in Nepalese, accept-ed a “blessed scarf” and then walked 14 anda half hours though freezing rain and sleet.

OK, perhaps it was slightly odd.Kruben and his 68-year-old wife, Sham, re-

cently became one of the oldest couples everto climb up to Mount Everest’s Base Camp.

At 5 364 metres above sea level it is rough-ly five times higher than Table Mountain.

“Averaging 12 to 14 hours of climbing dai-ly, it was 200% more difficult than we everimagined it would be,” says Sham.

The trip lasted 16 exhausting days.“But we had set our minds set on it and

there was no way either of us was going togive up,” continues the ever-determinedSham.

“When times got really tough we eggedeach other on. On the mountain there is justyou, your partner and your creator. Nothingelse matters. It makes one very contempla-tive and it crystallises the essence of life. Itwas very emotional, a hugely spiritual expe-rience.”

Sham and Kruben, residents of Oasis Re-

tirement Resort in Century City, underwentan intense 29 week training programme be-fore their adventure, which was designed byOasis’ bio-kinetic trainer.

“It changed every four weeks. We started inthe gym at 06:00, working on the treadmill, and later walked 50 laps in the pool draggingbuckets behind us. We also walked up 10flights of stairs ten times a day wearingweighted vests,” remembers Sham “fondly”.

“Later we walked round and round the Cen-tral Park field with tractor tyres filled withstones tied around our waists! We’re verygrateful to Chris Blackshaw of the CenturyCity Property Owners’ Association for afford-ing us this opportunity. We hope we didn’t ru-in the grass!”

Weeks of training finally paid off when theycompleted their journey.

“We were first captivated by the majesty ofEverest when we saw it at sunset from aneight-seater Cessna some years ago. It’s themost impressive thing to see. It has an incred-ible magnetism to it – it literally gave usgoosebumps. And somewhere it lodged at theback of the mind that we needed to spendmore time in the Himalayas,” she continues.

One of the two experienced sherpas told thecouple that he had never taken anyone theirage to Base Camp before.

There are so many memories that will stay

with Sham and Kruben forever.“Due to the numerous landslides and so

forth there is no path as such. You have tostep over huge boulders testing each onewith your sticks to ensure it is safe to stepon. Walking on the mountain in daylightis scary enough, but by night was anotherexperience.

“These sherpas are unreal, how theyknow theirwayover boulders, through riv-ers and ice is unbelievable!”

The sound of creaking glaciers and theroaring of distant avalanches were also ap-parently something to experience.

On Kruben’s birthday, and the day of the

final trek to Base Camp, they got up at 03:00to start the climb from Gorakshep.

The sherpas sang toKrubenandpresentedhimwithablessed scarf theygot fromamon-astery, as well as a bouquet of mountainanemone flowers picked the night before.

For the first few hours the silver glow ofthe moon was their companion and thenthey were battered by rain and sleet.

What was supposed to be an eight hourjourney to Base Camp and back became atreacherous 14 hour trek.

As for their next adventure, Sham jokesby saying that the family hopes and praysthey won’t be scaling a volcano.

Birthday celebrated on Mt Everest

Sham (68) and Kruben Moodliar (71) of Century City decided the best way to celebrate hisrecent birthday was to climb to Mount Everest’s South Base Camp.

According to ER24 spokesperson, RusselMeiring, the man had sustained severe inju-

ries to both his legs and injuries to his chest.“Paramedics began their assessment, pro-

viding the patient with advanced life supportto stabilize his weakening vital signs. Unfor-tunately, after a 20 minute resuscitation, thepatient was declared dead,” says Meiring.

The cause of the incident is not yet known.

Man dies after being hit by train at Ysterplaat

There was never any other career path tochoose says Linda Barnard.

The City of Cape Town’s Table View Li-brary this month bids farewell to its princi-pal librarian. Barnard has been a librarianfor over four decades, of which 23 yearswere spent at the City’s Library and infor-mation Services.

“I love reading and anything to do withbooks. Being a librarian gives me so muchjoy and I get to work with people, I have op-portunities to be creative, I have access tothe latest titles, and I get to network withother professionals in the same field,” shesaid.

Before joining the City’s Library and In-formation Services, Barnard was with theCape Provincial Library Service for about20 years.

“The nature of the work has become a lotmore professional, more reliant on compu-ter based information, but sadly a lot moreadministrative.”

Barnard said she would miss the diversi-

ty of patrons that visit the library. TableView has a monthly circulation of 26 074and 7 409 active members.

Barnard plans to travel locally and hope-fully get “to know the small towns in SouthAfrica with all those weird names. I wouldlike to spend more time enjoying my home, relaxing next to the pool or just in the gar-den in the early morning. I would also liketo spend more time with my two grandchil-dren who are still young and haven’treached the cheeky teenage stage yet.”

Mayco member for community servicesand special projects, Belinda Walker, com-mended Barnard for her years of service.

“Librarians have become more than justthe people who check out books. They areintegral part of communities and havehelped to turn our libraries into safe, educa-tional spaces and recreational hubs whichoffer programmes that empower. While weare sad to see her go we commend Barnardfor her dedication and wish her well on thisnew journey,” said Walker.

Chapter ends for librarianTable View principal librarian Linda Barnard is retiring.

Will clearing vegetation have an impact onvagrants occupying land illegally?According to Sector 1 community police

forum chairperson and exco member of Ta-ble View Ratepayers Association, BarrieJarrett, clearing vegetation is bound tohave a positive outcome.Approximately 10 groups of people, who

Jarrett describes as extremely aggressive, live next to Short Street in Link Road nearSt Chads Anglican Church. They have apparently verbally abused

Jarrett and passers-by on numerous occa-sions, abuse drugs and have contributed tothe degradation of the area.To make matters worse, the tiny stretch

of land that they occupy is next to a school, and according to Jarrett the children must“watch the vagrants defecate” next to theovergrown bushes. He has approached the City of Cape Town

to clear the vegetation, but his solution wasmet with doubt.Pat Titmuss, the regional manager of En-

vironmental Resource Management De-partment, says “the obliteration of vegeta-tion will not solve the social problem of va-grants in the area”.One of her colleagues, Morton Arries,

adds: “The emphasis must be on the root ofthese problems which is social in nature. From past experience in cases where the

vegetation was indeed removed the drugproblems and vagrants issues actually esca-lated.”Jarrett replies by insisting that the re-

moval of bushes and erecting fencing doesindeed prevent vagrants and drug addictsfrom occupying land.“We had a problem near the West Coast

Family Church where a few displaced peo-ple occupied the land,” he tells TygerBurg-er.“We had the fence extended, all the vege-

tationwas cut back andwe erected a no ille-gal dumping sign. If you go there now youwill see the massive transformation.”He adds that he has heard many stories

of people being harassed by those livingnear St Chad’s.The crime rate has apparently gone up

during the six or sevenmonths the vagrantshave been living there. One anonymous member of the public

says that each week the situation appearsto be spiralling further out of control.“The area is filthy! There is even a rat in-

festation in the area,” he says.Jarrett is doing his best to get authorities

to erect a fence and, in particular, removethe vegetation, which acts as shelter and amake shift “washing line”.“If this is indigenous or endangered vege-

tation then someone needs to urgently getthese vagrants off the land. If not, then thenext best thing is to remove the vegetation,”he concludes.

Vagrants ‘terrorise’Table View residents

Vagrants living near St Chads Anglican Church have apparently been “terrorising” passerbys.

One can almost imagine a group of eventplanners brainstorming what Canal Walkshopping centre will bring to shoppers thisfestive season.“I’ve got an idea,” exclaims one.“Weget an IceWorldwith a giant ice slide!”Another says that Canal Walk does that

every year. The first responds: “I know! But this year

we have a truly giant slide! Forty meters?Bah! This year we build one that’s 80 meterslong! The longest in Africa!”“Yes! Now the children can wait for their

parents to finish and not the other wayaround! Let’s add a few smaller ones for them– say a 15 and a 10 meter slide. Everyone ishappy,” says another. The event planners pat each other on the

back. All in a days work!Lastweek the IceSlideWonderlandopened

to an eager public.Up until 11 January from 10:00 to 22:00 an

enchanting Centre Court will resemble theNorth Pole (minus freezing temperatures, polar bears and glacial drift).

With the way Canal Walk ups the ante eve-ry year it would not be wholly surprising ifthese make an appearance next Christmas.”This year Canal Walk will be an icy play-

ground for everyone from tiny tots to daringthrill-seekers,” says marketing manager Va-nessa Herbst.“Wewanted to provide a reallymemorable

experience for the adults and older teens aswell. We’re not talking about a tame slide. This 80 meter long slide will take the ridersup, down and around the circumference ofthe Centre Court, and through some fun tun-nels.”If sliding is not for you then you can go into

the special “snow play area”.So postpone your plans to travel to Scandi-

navia and pretend Scandinavia has come toCanal Walk for a long holiday.Costs per session that lasts 45 minutes are

Some people use lego to build dinosaursthat look like spaceships, other use it tobuild houses that look like spaceships.Children will relate to the fact that no

matter what they build, it eventually lookslike a spaceship (usually really bad space-ships, mind you).Nathan Sawaya builds dinosaurs that

look like dinosaurs and houses that looklike houses. His remarkable art is now on show at

V&A Waterfront and is most definitely go-ing to stun onlookers.TygerBurger was invited to the exhibi-

tion during a media launch and it is sureto go down as one of the most jaw-droppinglaunches of all time.It features up to 70 sculptures created

from more than a million Lego bricks bythis American artist.Tickets to the exhibition, which ends on

28 February, are available from Com-puticket at R140 for adults and R95 for kids.Entry for children under two-years-old isfree.

As an avid animal lover, thephotograph of the starvingpuppy sickened me for severalreasons (Lewenskiekie, 3December).

The caption reads “Ek soeknet kos” and further on“babahondjie kyk net ander-pad”.

This was all happening whilepolice were looking for perpe-trators “in ’n misdaad opera-sie”.

Whoever owns this dog – ifanyone – is a criminal.

I cannot, for the life of me,think why you would publishsomething like this. To whatend?

If your photographer was sotouched by this puppy’s plight– take it to the SPCA and thenrather publish a before andafter picture when it has beentaken care of, rehabilitated andput in a home where peoplewill give it the love it soobviously needs.

Take R50 out of your walletif have to.

The only reason this puppyis standing so still and “pos-ing” for the photographer isbecause the poor thing hasnowhere to run.

As an animal lover, I am ofthe conviction that animalsand humans all have rights.Human babies depend on theirparents, young puppies dependon the people who own them.

And this picture had thesame effect on me as if youhad published a picture of anewborn baby dumped in arubbish bin. No regard.

I would like to respond to therecent letters about guns by P.van Wyk and Charl van Wyk.Both claim more guns in thehands of “good” people willlimit crime, which is of course

a myth.I follow their tirade in most

newspapers. Both are alsopro-death penalty activists. Itseems their whole outlook onlife is one of anger, hatred andvengeance.

Charl was the guy who hadhis gun in the St James Churchmassacre in 1993 claiming thelives of 11 people. He claims hislittle gun prevented a biggerdisaster, but most of us believeit was only the hand of God.Those evil folks had biggerguns and even hand grenades.

I once read that Charlpropagates the fallacy thatbecause Simon Peter carried asword, the weapon of Biblicaltimes, we must all also carryguns to protect us.

But most of us believe ourMaster taught us to put oursword away because “those wholive by the sword will die bythe sword”.

If we look at the misery anddevastation guns are causing allover the globe, no sane personwill instigate more fear intosocieties by telling us all tocarry guns. It is wholly unreal-istic and dangerous.

If God cannot protect us,what can? Guns? Anyone thatsupports the death penalty andviolence is himself a potentialmurderer.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Hot Water frontman Donovan Copleywafts into the WP Media office like afresh of breath air.

His calming presence is violently juxta-posed to his vibrant outfit or “colourgemors” as he calls it, but then, the CapeTown singer says he loves colours, andmorespecifically, loves mixing them.“I like tomixmusical genres and colours,”

says Donovan. He is also passionate about South African

rhythms and loves finding crossover points.Think Ghoema meets Sakkie and you’re onthe right track. The rest of his band reflects this perfectly.

While members change, they always comefrom very different music genres.Readers may be familiar with HotWater’s

single, “Wamkelekile”, which was used intheAmericanFilmBlended, and is currentlyenjoying high rotation on local radio sta-tions, but a quick listen to one of his albumswill show that there’s much more to Dono-van’s music.

Township feel“I think at the heart of it, I’m really a folk

musician, but I happen to come from SouthAfrica.”When askedwhere his ideas aboutmixing

cultural references come from, Donovansimply points to heart.“When I started to play guitar, sometimes

the things I played just sounded sort of town-ship-style and that’s what I felt.” He says hismusic and his band came from an explora-tion on what it felt like “to be me”.His new album is a continuation of that

exploration. Donovan will be releasing Son-goma (sic) at Kirstenbosch on Sunday 28 De-cember.“I think it’s a real stamp of the sound that

I’vedevelopedor exploredwith the last threealbums.”The album name comes from a conversa-

tion Donovan had with a stranger one day.He was looking for a word that would de-scribe who he is, what he does and his life’spurpose. He was giving an African womana lift and she pointed out that the beads onhis wrist are oftenworn by sangomas or nat-ural healers. He felt like he could relate.“Songs sort of come from an invisible

place, so where is it that you go to collect asong?” For Donovan, there’s a transforma-tive aspect to writing music so he said: “Iguess you can call me a songoma.”

He describes his “hybrid”word as fun andcheeky, which perfectly encapsulates hismusic. From a production side, he says he’s also

taken a step forward, working with two pro-ducers, including Aron Turest-Swartz, afounding member of Freshlyground.“Aron really got, and gets what it is I’m

doing.”He recorded at Monte Bello Studio and

says working with producers gave him thespace to focus on the delivering the music.“I think it’s distilled HotWater,” Donovan

says of the new album. He says the concertat Kirstenbosch will also reflect that.

Founding venueFanswill beable tohearold favourites like

“Bush Fire” alongside songs from the newalbum, including an Afrikaans song, “Voor-trekker”.“We’re going to have fun, that’s all I can

guarantee,” he says.Donovan says he loves Kirstenbosch. He

launched his first album,Home, at the venuein 2006 and he’s played three shows theresince.“Kirstenbosch is very close to my heart

and was really part of almost founding whatI do.”Hot Water will be playing at Kirstenbosch

as part of the Summer Sunset concert series.V Tickets cost between R75 and R100 and are available at www.webtickets.co.za. For more informationabout Hot Water, visit www.hotwater.co.za.V Donovan visited the Orange Couch to give readersa taste of his new album. Amagician, stilt walker, ventriloquist, un-der-water escape artist and sound engineerhas developed a persona to combat crime inthe Goodwood area which has earned himthe title of most accomplished neighbour-hood watch member.Rory MacKay, aka Inspector Gadget, has

state-of-the-art tools on him and in his Gad-get Mobile - an eight-year-old Chana Star1.3l van - but says he uses most of them forone of his day job as entertainer. In his spa-re time, they help be the eyes and ears forthe police and to serve his community.“It all started with a motorcycle accident

a couple of years ago. Iwas onmywayhomefrom Camps Bay, where I was entertainingas a robot, so I was dressed in full combatgear.“A vehicle with a trailer cut in front of

me and I collided with the trailer.“People who were staying in the bushes

nearby were on the scene first. They sawthat my hand was basically off and usedcardboard from the bushes to put aroundmy arm and hand. Then a doctor stoppedat the scene in a private vehicle. A lady alsoappeared from nowhere and wrapped herscarf around my wrist,” Rory recalls. He remembers waking up in the hospital,

with his hand “wired back on” and beingable to move his fingers. He says there are many things around

this incident that has yet to deal with, buta desire to help other people was born.“That is also why I do the gadgeting stuff,

because it makes me a little bit stronger, emotionally as well. I do have clinical de-pression, but when I am in my character asGadget, I am fine.”Today he has a reconstructed wrist and

regained 80% use of his arm and hand.“Formy day job I always need things like

my leatherman and my torch. Those twoare my favourite gadgets. Once I take my

torch out it lasts for up to 18 hours, it is aproper R4 000 fireman’s torch.”His van is jampacked. “There’s a first aid

kit, night vision equipment, a chain saw, paintballmarker, a dash-mounted video ca-mera, fire and road breakdown gear, a spa-de, an axe, fire extinguishers, jumper ca-bles, cones, a 4-meter collapsible ladder andbits and bobs and gadgets I carry with me.“If I get to a scene, where an officermight

be standing with his blue lights flashingand a flat torch, I will stop there, put myhazards on and ask if they need assistance.I will put my cones out and my torch willbeworking. Theywill say: ‘Ohyouare quiteprepared, you are like the gadgetman!’ Yes,I am the gadgetman. You knowJimCarrey, inspector Gadget? Well that’s me.”When patrolling, Rory also wears special

fire and stab retardant gloves, so thathe canhelp in a situationwithout hurting himself. But he stays away from conflict situati-

ons. “We are there to observe and I believethat visibility is a deterrent.”To better his surveillance when patrol-

ling, he has a CCTV camera on top of hisvan with a screen that pops down on the in-side. He also uses a GoPro camera.“If I approach a situation that seems sus-

picious, it can be recorded.“The neighbourhood watch is not suppo-

sed to become involved in skirmishes. Butin order to get a closer look, to be able toinform the police what is going on, we needto make an approach in a tactical manner. That is why I wear camouflage, and not thehigh-viz vest, because I can’t hide away ina high-viz vest” he says.He shared the Gadget Mobile’s self-star-

ter withTygerBurger. It is a central lockingremote “with a little extra”. After the vanis unlocked with the remote, Rory says:“Start!”, and the engine switches on. Onceordered to “Switch off!”, the engine cutsout. The secret, he says, is a little Asiantechnology and a little Inspector Gadgetmagic.

In 1998 verskyn Ferreira se eerste roman,

Hoekom honde nie kan sing nie. In 2012 ver-skyn Ferreira se bekroonde jeugverhaal, Totsiens, koningArthur.

The Danny Abrahams Ex FootballersFund is the birth of a project aiming toassist old players who are in dire need

of financial assistance.Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Ka-

relse (Kraaifontein) are themasterminds be-hind the fund and are trying to relieve somepressure off their former teammates.Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to

1992 and Douglas played professional soccerfor Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988.“We applied to register the fund as a NPC

(non-profit company) some four months agoandwegot thegreenlight lastweek.Thiswillreally help us in our cause to approach com-panies and individuals to sponsor us in anyway they see fit,” said Jack.Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny

Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund.Abrahams, who struggles financially andhas Alzheimers, has benefited greatly fromhis friends.“It’s difficult to see howyour former team-

mate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’tjust sit back and watch him and other play-ers struggle theway they do.We felt the urgeto jump in and help,” Jack says.“It’s a great feeling, helping them in wha-

tever way we can. Every now and then wewill host a dance and raise a bit of moneyfor these chaps. We are hoping to get somesponsors in thenewyear to assist us in bette-ring their lives.“Having said that, we are very positive we

can get some sponsors on board, there is so-me interest from companies and individualswanting to get involved but we had to waitto get registered as aNPC. Now that we havethe papers, it is all systems go. We will also

approach Safa and see if they can help us inany way possible,” he said. The fund committee will also have a

monthly meeting and see who they can as-sist in that given month.“Sometimeswewill just go and have a cup

of tea and chat about the good old days. Itis truly heart warming to help these guysand see how thankful they are. This is whywe dowhatwe do. To be there for our friendsand help make life just a little bit better onegood deed at a time,” said Karelse.Phone Ivor Jack on 083 241 5847 of Douglas

Karelse on 084 286 1292 to get involved withthe fund or make any contributions.

SAREL BURGER

tjie-sege Montrose (112) druipstert huistoe gestuurnáveral stewige bydraes deurGiovanni Hulley (4/20), Dillon Verreyne

(44) enChristiaanMocke (34*).

meer as 600 km beslis.

Die tradisio-nele aandresies vind vanjaar by Struisbaaiplaas. Die finale skof oor 161 km begin by Gans-

TASMIN CUPIDO@tazzcup

Sports facilities across the Cape are fall-ing prey to the acts of brazen vandalsand thieves.

A total of 55 sports complexeswere vandal-ised and burgled between April and Novem-ber. A staggering 217 incidents were report-ed during this period, the city confirms.Sports clubs and facility management

committees are calling on the city to step upsecurity, as they fear the continuous crimi-nal activities may stifle or end operations atthe organisations and facilities.Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the Rygate

Local Football Association (LFA) whichcalls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Ry-lands its home, says vandals stripped the fa-cility in the first week of October – only acouple of weeks after the end of the footballseason. He claims the damage amounts toR200 000, a cost they cannot cover.“The interior of the clubhouse was

stripped bare. All the cabling and wiringwas removed. The wiring of the floodlightswas also removed and the electricity box re-moved and damaged,” Bailey says.Similarly, chairperson of the Metropoli-

tan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropoli-tan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit

at the end of October. The facility wasstripped to resemble a shell and the organi-sation had to replace the trophies and med-als for its annual prizegivingdays before the event.“Everything was fine dur-

ing the season, except for theodd burglary, but when theseason ended and there wasless activity at the facility, the criminals pounced.“The MFMC is constantly

reminded that it is not theowner of the facility, but on-ly the custodians. Yet theowner, the city, doesn’t takeresponsibility for its assets.”In local sporting circles,

Weitz adds, there has beentalk of several facilities being vandalisedover the last couple of months. “There wasa time when security guards were placed atthe facility, but they informed us their con-tract had come to an end and that was theend of security,” he explains.“The city spends millions upgrading and

maintaining facilities, so I believe theyshouldprotect it or theworkwill beuseless.”TygerBurger has reported on incidents at

the Wesbank Sports Complex, DurbanvilleSports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports

Complex, while its sister publicationCityVi-sion reported on incidents at the Gugulethuand Philippi swimming pools.

Furthermore, it’s othersister publication, People’sPost has reported on burgla-ry and vandalism at severalsports facilities across thepeninsula over the last cou-ple of months. These includethe Stephan Reagan, Rock-lands and Strandfonteinsports complexes, andSwartklip Indoor SportsCentre in Mitchell’s Plain, the Hoosain Parker SportsComplex in Parkwood andthe Johnson Road SportsComplex. Burglary and van-

dalism were also reported at clubhouses atKraaifontein Sports Complex.Despite the number of incidents, the city

says it cannot provide continuous securitypresence.Mayco member for community services

and special projects, Belinda Walker, says a“limited budget” of R36m was allocated forsecurity in the department budget.“The department has had to rationalise

the use of security personnel at some of itsfacilities to remain within the allocated

budget in the current financial year,” shesays.“The departmentmanages a large number

of public facilities across the city and hasidentified hotspots where facilities are par-ticularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism– security personnel will be present at thesefacilities. It is closelymonitoring these facil-ities to find the most effective and financial-ly sustainable options for securing them.”But security guards aren’t the only option,

Walker adds, as the city has invested consid-erably in fences and alarms. It is also work-ing to create partnerships with communityorganisations such as neighbourhoodwatches to help deter theft and vandalism. The city has spent R4,8m on repairs and

replacements at facilities which have fallenvictim to theft and vandalism, Walker says.“This is money that could have been put

to better use to either upgrade these facili-ties or provide additional facilities in areaswhere there are limited or no sport and rec-reation facilities,” she says.“Now, more than ever, we need our com-

munities to work with us and take owner-ship of their recreational spaces. We urgeresidents to report any suspicious behav-iour immediately.”V Report incidents anonymously on the tollfreenumber 0800 225 669.
