Part of safety and security is also making sure the centre is lit up when there is a power cut. It will only get worse during winter when it’s also darker earlier,” Smith says. Centre management expressed their re- gret. “We regret that this happened to a cus- tomer and we are investigating the alleged incident,” said Morné van Staden, who is in charge of maintenance at The Paddocks. When asked if there is any prospect of erecting booms at the open parking area, he said: “We are busy with our investigation in- to the incident and unfortunately are not at liberty to disclose any information, until it has been concluded.” He did not comment on allegations that this incident could have been avoided should the centre have had better security measures in place. “The works are in process for lighting du- ring load shedding, which should be operati- onal by the end of this week.”

New hospice house hit by burglary

Sue van der Linde from Iris House. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

Thieves ransacked a hospice for termi-nally ill children less than two weeksafter it opened its doors in Stikland.

Iris House, a mobile care and support or-ganisation for children with a limited lifes-pan and their families, officially opened itsnew permanent hospice premises on 14April on the Stikland Hospital grounds. The newly revamped building – a project

founded with love and serious tenacity bySue van der Linde – became a crime statisticlast Wednesday.TygerBurgerhad just thatmorningvisited

the new premises to interview Sue on IrisHouse’s plans for the structure she and herteam had brought to reality.“We had a break in last night,” Sue in-

formed TygerBurger on Thursday morning. She said the security company was very

quick to react, but they suffered some losses.“We only lost the Mac (computer), petty

cash tin and our brand new hard drive withall our video footage on – we are praying thecompany has a backup,” she said.“Who steals from a Children’s Hospice?”On TygerBurger’s visit, Sue provided a

tour of the premises, showing off the newlyfunctional spaces created during phase 1 oftheir huge clean-up operation. The centre opened to wide media interest

on 14 April, with the Premier of theWestern

Cape, Helen Zille, unveiling the plaque.During our visit, Sue mentioned they

needed to build a wall – but for a differentreason at the time than security. It appeared that some of the neighbours

who work with fork-lift trucks, had taken tousing the centre’s newly laid driveway fortheir own purposes.“The driveway isn’t made for that kind of

heavy-duty wear and tear. It’s meant as a

quick and easily accessible way for parentsto roll up our children who are in wheel-chairs,” she said.“But now one of the neighbours is using

the driveway to turnhis big trucks around.”The house, as it stands on the tranquil

grounds of thehospital as a former employeeresidence, was in a state of utter neglectwhen Sue first laid eyes on it.“We got lost on the hospital grounds and

ended up at (this) property. I knew we hadto have it, and we did. Eventually.”The end of phase 1 of the repairs to the

house was a very long road filled with redtape, broken roof tiles, fingerdeepgrimeandfilth and the accompanying cockroaches, astolen geyser and piping, with the brasswin-dow latches also having been stolen..But with the help of care staff and some

of the parents and familymembers of the 155children serviced by Iris House across theWestern Cape, the home was rebuilt withlove, care and lots of fresh paint and cement.Every paving brick was sourced by par-

ents, as were the roof tiles. “The parentswent from dumpsite to dumpsite in searchof the rooftiles. And they found them.”Then, not two weeks after the fanfare of

the opening, the burglary happened.“Perhaps you could mention in the article

wearedesperatelyneeding toputup thewalland access gate for the property,” Sue said. The Rainbow and Forest rooms were spe-

cially adapted to be able to accommodateovernight stays for the children and theirfamily, but Sue is taking no chances.“After this (burglary) I am not going to al-

low overnight care at the hospice until thisis done. I have to ensure the safety of ourchildren and carers,” she said.Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson of the

Bellville police, said a case of housebreakingis being investigated and police “stronglycondemn” the incident.

ASTRID FEBRUARIE@febastrid

Since the beginning of the year, the po-lice in the Western Cape have hadtheir own ombudsman and according

to Advocate Vusi Pikoli, his office has al-ready received more than 90 complaintsagainst the police.

Pikoli was invited to a meeting organisedby the Claremont police cluster where heshed some light on this position, which isa first for South Africa.

His duties are to adjudicate public com-plaints about police inefficiency or prob-lems that arise from a breakdown in rela-tions between the police and the communi-ty.

Pikoli explained that as the ombudsmanhe is legallymandated to receive complaintsand deal with them accordingly.

“The type of complaints we will addressin the office include inefficiency within thepolice service and breakdown of relationsbetween community and police,” he says.

The Western Cape provincial police om-budsman is a South African first, made pos-sible through theWesternCapeCommunitySafety Act, which is aimed at improved po-licing service delivery.

IndependentPikoli explained that the ombudsman and

the ombudsman staff members must serveindependently and impartially and mustperform their functions in good faith andwithout fear, favour, bias or prejudice, sub-ject to the Constitution and the law.

The functions of the ombudsmanare to re-ceive and investigate complaints submittedin terms of Section 16 of the CommunitySafety Act. The complaints include ineffi-ciency of the police or a breakdown in rela-tions between the police and any communi-ty and to perform the other functions as-signed to him or her under this Act.

“The ombudsman and staff members ofthe ombudsman must preserve confiden-tiality in respect of any information ac-quired in terms of this Act, he says.

Pikoli explains that any person may sub-mit a complaint in the prescribed mannerand form to the ombudsman regarding al-leged police inefficiency or a breakdown inrelations between the police and any com-munity.

“Any member of the provincial parlia-ment may, on becoming aware of a com-plaint regarding alleged police inefficiencyor a breakdown in relations between the po-lice and any community, submit it to theombudsman for investigation,” he ex-plained.

The ombudsman must issue guidelines

that are publicly accessible in respect of theprocedures to submit to the ombudsman.

Pikoli further explained that for the pur-poses of an investigation, the ombudsmanmaydirect anyperson to submit anaffidavitor affirmed declaration.

He may also ask the person to appear be-fore the ombudsman’s office to give evi-dence or to produce any document in thatperson’s possession or under his or her con-trolwhichhas a bearing on thematter beinginvestigated, and may question that personthereon.

Certificate of appointment“I may request an explanation from any

personwhomhe or she reasonably suspectsof having information which has a bearingon the matter being investigated or to be in-vestigated,” he said.

The ombudsman may designate staffmembers of the ombudsman or other suita-ble persons as investigating officers to per-form the functions referred to in subsec-tions (1) and (2) of the Act.

Pikoli says an investigating officerwho isnot in the full-time service of the state mustbe appointed on the prescribed conditionsand at the prescribed remuneration.

An investigating officermust be providedwith a certificate of appointment signed byor on behalf of the ombudsman in which itis stated that he or she is an investigatingofficer appointed in terms of this Act. “Aninvestigating officermust have a certificateof appointment on his or her person whenperforming a function in terms of this Act,”he says.

Pikoli says since his appointment mid-January his office has received over 90 com-plaints.

“We are pleased that the public are com-ing forward and reporting to us about theirconcerns which mean that we can work to-gether and establish solutions to policing is-sues in the province,” he says.

Complaints flood ombudsman

Newly appointed head of the Western CapeProvincial Police ombudsman, Vusi Pikoli, speaks about his position in Claremont.

Sanparks moots‘people mover’for Signal Hill

Sanparks has released its tenyearplan for Table Mountain NationalPark. PHOTO: ARCHIVE

A funicular, tram or cableway couldsoon link the city centre to the Noonday gun and Signal Hill if Sanparks

has their way.Such a “mechanical people mover” has

been mooted in a management plan it hasdrafted to boost tourism.

Table Mountain National Park (TMNP),managedbySanparks, has released its draftmanagement plan for the next ten years. The public is invited to comment on it.A large portion of the plan is dedicated toboosting tourism, which in turn will fundconservation, heritage and constituencybuilding.

This entails upgrading a range of existingtourist attractions.

First on the list for an upgrade is Boul-ders Beach, which sees 650 000 annual visi-tors. Visits are growing by over 5% a year. The visitor facility will be redesigned to en-hance visitor experience and visitor flow, the plan states. Other upgrades include theboardwalks, parking area and interpretiveinformation.

People moverA proposed upgrade of Cape Point may

see infrastructure improvements to theroads, water pipeline and sewerage system,as well as the visitor centre.

The Rhodes memorial site may also seeinfrastructure upgrades. An investigationis underway to explore uses for the old zoosite there, which could serve as a “gateway”to the Groote Schuur estate and the park.

The Tokai Manor area is also in line forupgrades. Theplanproposes developing thearea into a “vibrantmulti-purpose gatewayto the park where the environmental, cul-tural and social significance of the area iscelebrated through the restoration of [theTokai Manor and surrounds]”.

An upgrade to Signal Hill and Tafelberg

roads, which see 1.2 million visitors, isneededaccording to theplan.Thiswould tieinto new developments in the Strand Streetquarry. To improve access to Table Mountain, San-parks is currently investigating imple-menting a “mechanical people mover”which will link the Strand Street quarry tothe Lion Battery and Signal Hill. This couldlead to a range of visitor facilities at thenoon day gun and Signal Hill.

The management plan also proposes tomake use of other quarries in the City Bowlfor a variety of “low-volume multi-useevents”.

Ocean gatewaySilvermine is also set for development

with the establishment of a picnic area onthe southern side of SilvermineDamaswellas re-use of the Groot Silvermine Home-stead as a visitor site linked to Peers Caveand the Sunbird Education Centre.

TheSilvermineSource-to-Seaprojectwillbe implemented to rehabilitate the riversystems and promote recreational links be-tween the urban environment and the park.

The plan also looks at waterways, withthe idea of linking the diversity of the ter-restrial environment with that of the oceanthrough the establishment of a “marinegateway to the Southern oceans”.

“The purpose of this gateway would be topromote the wonders of the ocean througha variety of marine-based research andma-rine enforcement,” the plan states.

A site for this gateway is still being identi-fied.

The plan serves as a reference to theman-agement and development of the Park in itscurrent and envisaged future form.V The full plan can be viewed on the Sanparks website. Public comment can be submitted until Saturday 9 May.

An affordable management plan has beendrawnup for the dunes along theTableViewbeachfront located on theAtlantic coastline.Thebeachfront is anextensiveand sensiti-

ve stretch of the City’s coastline that offerssignificant amenity value to the broaderme-tropolitan area. This area experiences ongoing issues rela-

ted to dune and coastal management, whichhas a negative effect on the public environ-ment and prevents the full utilisation of thecoastline.According to Nora Grose, councillor for

the area, the City is addressing the issue, and after months of planning and discussi-ons by departments, an effective, affordablemanagement plan has been drawn up.“Addressing the beachfront challenge is

one of my key priorities as I believe this co-astline is highly dependent on the hospitali-ty and tourism industry for capital invest-ment.“We therefore need to make sure our co-

astline is attractive and that we protect ournatural environment. I recently met offici-als fromthedepartments of sport andrecrea-tion, roads and environmental resource ma-nagement to receive an update on their pro-gress in this regard,” stated Grose.“These departments have submitted a

maintenance management plan (MMP) forthe repairs and maintenance work thatneeds to be done along theTableViewbeach-front parking area. This MMP is now beingassessed by the relevant environmental aut-horities in order to obtain authorisation towork in this environmentally sensitivestretch of coastline,” she said.Once approval is obtained, these depart-

ments will release the full MMP and Rehabi-litation of the Table View Beachfront DuneSystem.Currently, beach benches and boardwalks

are being repaired and ablution as well asother signs put up. All the work will be com-pleted by the end of 2015.

“Immunisation is safe and effecti-ve.” This is the message of the fa-culty of medicine and health sci-

ences of the Univerity of Stellenbosch,Tygerberg, during World ImmunisationWeek that started on 24 April.

This faculty believes immunisation isone of the most effective ways of redu-cing illness and death in children, yetmany children in South Africa and Afri-cadonot benefit fromthis life-savingme-asure.

Preventative measureIt is estimated that 1.5million children

across the globe died from vaccine-pre-ventable diseases in 2013.

“Vaccines are different from medici-nes. Normally people only takemedicinewhen they are sick, but you take vacci-nes to prevent disease in future,” ex-plains Professor Charles Wiysonge, de-puty director of the centre for evidence-based health care at StellenboschUniversity.

Robust programmeHe says South Africa has one of the

most robust immunisation programmeson the continent, offering vaccinationsagainst some of the common diseasesresponsible for childhood deaths anddisability, including polio, measles, TB,tetanus (an infection characterised bymuscle spasm), rotavirus (which causesdiarrhoea in children) and pneumococ-cal disease (responsible for pneumonia, ear infections, meningitis and other di-seases).

But despite the range of vaccines avai-lable, only about two-thirds of South Af-rican children are estimated to receivethe full series of immunisations. Alt-hough the national health departmentprovides vaccination coverage figures of

close to 100 percent, frequent outbreaksof vaccine-preventable disease (especial-ly measles) prove full coverage is not yetachieved.

Need for education“There is an urgent need for education

on immunisation among parents andhealth care workers. Ignorance aroundthe importance and safety of vaccinescause many people to forgo the opportu-nity to be vaccinated.

“Vaccines undergo strenuous testingand there is a strong emphasis on safe-ty,” says Wiysonge. “One can comforta-bly say all the vaccines in our immunisa-tion programme have a very good safetyprofile.”

Safety testsHe says before any vaccine is made

available it undergoes several safety andefficacy tests. The results are combinedin a systematic reviewand is scrutinisedby a World Health Organisation (WHO)task group.

Wiysonge, who serves on the WHO’sstrategic advisory group of experts onimmunisationaswell as theAfrican taskforce on immunisation, says the low up-take of vaccines is mostly due to healthcare staff and parents’ lack of knowledgeabout immunisation, human resourcesand financial constraints, and systema-tic challenges such poor refrigeration fa-cilities and availability.

“In line with the millennium develop-ment goals, we have to ensure our chil-dren’s right to health, development andsurvival is respected, protected and pro-moted,” says Wiysonge.

Research by Wiysonge and colleagueshas found promising strategies to impro-ve the country’s immunisationprogram-me.

The simple act of breathing is difficult or im-possible for some children.

But with the Breatheasy programme atRed Cross Children’s Hospital, parents withchildren whose health is dependent on tech-nology will be able to look after them athome.

The multi-disciplinary programme, co-or-dinated by Sister Jane Booth, trains parentsto take over the care of their technology-de-pendent children from the hospital’s medi-cal team.

“We strive to recognise and support thefamilies who provide extraordinary specialcare to their technology-dependent childrenat home,” Booth says.

Booth says the programme also improvesthe child’s quality of life, meets their devel-opmental needs and prevents the psycho-so-cial complications of long-term hospitalisa-tion.

“They feel safe and secure growing upwithin their families, are integrated intotheir own communities and eventually willbe able to contribute to society at large,” shesays.

What makes this programme unique is

that the parents (families) have to take com-plete responsibility for the care of their chil-dren at home, because as yet there are nopaediatric home-based carers in the commu-nity.

Booth and her Breatheasy programmewere recently included in a health innova-tors booklet from the Bertha Centre for So-cial Innovation in recognition of her inte-gral role in founding and facilitating the pro-gramme.

As a result, the programme was one of on-ly two health innovations from SouthAfricafeatured as part of a BBC series showcasinghealth innovations across Africa.

The series focused on how these health in-novations are making a difference to thelives of patients, their families and commu-nities.

To watch the inset, visit bbc.in/1IFIUvF.“I am so passionate about this pro-

gramme, because it takes children out ofhospital back home where they belong. Itbuilds the capacity of the parents to be ableto care for their childrenandallowschildrento continue leading their normal, dailylives,” Booth says.

What do you get when you cross thepaths of a Brazilian, several majorraces, South African charm and a

Bellville-based anti-abuse organisation?A young Samaritan by the name of Iago

Sampaio Marçal.This 22-year-old fromRioDe Janeiro beca-

me entranced by running two years ago andeventually ended up in Cape Town for theTwo Oceans marathon. Shortly thereafter,he met up with Monique Strydom, founderof anti-child abuse organisationMatla A Ba-na.Inspired by the legacy of Madiba during

a visit to Robben Island, the youngBraziliandecided to follow in this great leader’s foot-steps: with Monique’s guidance, he wouldbecome a voice against abuse.“Iago also decided to try to make a diffe-

rence by raising funds for people in need inSouth Africa,” said Monique.

A way to helpGuided by Old Mutual’s Run for More

Than Yourself project, and his love for chil-dren, Iago contacted Monique to do somet-hing practical toward achieving this dream.“I was bowled over when I got his messa-

ge,” saidMonique. “It is not often that an in-dividual offers to help – and it has never hap-pened from halfway across the world!”Monique gladly accepted his offer to raise

funds forMatla A Bana and encouraged himto reach out to other such organisations thatspeak out against abuse.Research has shown that children do not

report abuse because society does not talkabout it as it is still a very taboo subject, Mo-nique said.Iago took up her challenge by setting up

awebsite and spreading themessage on soci-al media. His story soon attracted the atten-tion of his country’smedia and his storyma-de threemajor papers – hewas also intervie-

wed on a regional TV station in Brazil, saysMonique.“It helps to help others,” Iago said in bro-

ken English with a smile.Iago soon got a call from a professional

long distance running trainer, who offeredto train Iago free of charge for the Two Oce-ans race.“When you have so many people helping

you and you think of your commitment tohelp the children, you cannot stop and sit onthe pavement and cry when you are tired!”he said.He pushed through and completed the ra-

ce.Iagowashonoured lastThursdaybyMatla

ABana for his dedicationwhen they handedover a special “Hero Certificate” for his ef-fort. He had managed to raise more thanR10 000 by obtaining race sponsorship forthe organisation.

Comfort packsThismoneywill be used to supply comfort

packs to abused children, Monique said. The comfort pack project is only one of the

many projects of Matla A Bana, who helpmore than 20 000 children each year. These packs are handed to the police’s Fa-

mily Violence, Child Protection and SexualOffences units, and they give it to childrenwho are victims of crime.

Most of these young victims are girls bet-ween the ages of nine and 12 who have beenraped, said Monique.Matla A Bana needs at least 100 of these

packs everymonth – and this does not inclu-de packs for other ages, which are also ingreat demand.Iago now plans to use his remaining two

months in South Africa to dive with the se-als, see some lions and meet as many SouthAfricans as possible.“His only disappointment so far is that he

did not get tomeet Bruce Fordyce at the TwoOceans race expo,” said Monique. “But heis planning to come back to run the Comra-des – and hopefully to meet Bruce then!”

Re. “Flood of questions overwater usage”, TygerBurger, 15April. Last November my watermeter jumped. I was told ontwo occasions that old metersdo jump. Since then I have beenbattling with the water depart-ment. My meter reading jumpedby 3000 KL. As I live by myselfthere was no way I could haveused that amount extra. I wastold that I left a tap running. Imight be a pensioner but I amnot that stupid. It has beenresolved to their satisfaction, asmy pension is small, that I paya sum extra every month. Thiswas because I was in arrearshaving been told at the begin-ning all would be sorted out. Ofcourse I have to pay thisamount or my water will be cutoff.

LEWENSKIEKIE

In daardie opsig is Suid-Afrika dus

The City of Cape Town has remindedresidents to consider logging faultsand requesting City services on its

mobile (mobi) site.“We constantly strive to find innovative

ways of improving service levels that willsave our residents valuable time and mo-ney. We live in a digital era where smartphones and other mobile devices are moreeasily accessible to a larger sector of ourpopulation,” says mayco member for cor-porate services, Xanthea Limberg.

“The mobi site, a web page designed forthese mobile devices, is one more optionavailable for our residents to access Cityservices,” said Limberg.

The uptake of the mobi site has beenslow, but the City hopes more residentswill make use of it.

Common requestsOf the more than 20 000 service requests

created via the eServices portal from 1April 2014 to 31 March this year, just over400 were via the mobi site. The top threeservices requested related to streets lightsnot working (30 requests), illegal structu-res erected (27 requests) and blocked oroverflowing sewer systems (24 requests).

Residents can use the mobi site to reportfaults such as potholes, water leaks, elec-tricity failures and illegal dumping, among other service requests.

The mobi site can be accessed at: http://www.capetown.gov.za/mobi. Usersshould select the “Service Requests” taband go to “Create new service request”.

Once a request has been chosen under the“Group” tab, a few related options will popup under the “Service” tab. Users maythen choose the most relevant servicefrom the drop-down list.

The address details of where the fault isand a description need to be completed onthe request. Once the contact details secti-on has been filled in, the request can besubmitted. Residents also have the optionof uploading photographs.

Home pageOn some mobile devices, residents log-

ging onto the mobi site may automaticallybe directed to the homepage of the City’swebsite. Residents can still log their servi-ce requests either by choosing the “eServi-ces” tab under the Quick Links (on theright) or selecting “Service Request” onthe menu bar (on the left).

“We provide the innovative mecha-nisms (such as the mobi site) for residentsto provide feedback to the City and we relyon residents to use these to help us impro-ve service delivery. The City’s call centrereceives an average 4 000 calls per day andat times the waiting period can be longerthan normal due to the volume of calls. Our alternative e-platforms help save resi-dents time and are available on the go.

“The City cannot be aware of all faultsunless residents bring them to our attenti-on immediately. We are committed to en-suring that as many residents as possibleare able to report these faults which willenable us to make progress possible.”

City urges residentsto use mobile app Following the recent helicopter crash in the

Bainskloof Pass in which two firefightingvolunteers lost their lives, the importantrole these rescue workers play in dousingfires and saving lives came under the spot-light.

The two volunteers who lost their liveswhile battling a fire are Darrell Rea (39) andJastun Visagie (23), both crew members ofWorking on Fire (WOF).

They were fighting fires in the mountainsnear Wellington when their helicoptercrash landed.

Several fires have hit the Cape Peninsulaover the last two months. One fire whichlasted for more than four days ravaged thesouth Peninsula. Another which also lasteddays broke out in the Jonkershoek Moun-tain outside Stellenbosch in the Boland.

Firefighters from City of Cape Town’s Fi-re and Rescue Services as well as WOF – agovernment funded firefighting relief andsupport organisation – incurred injuriesduring some of these call-outs.

Another group of brave in-dividuals who frequently puttheir lives in danger are themembers of the VolunteerWildfire Services.

Peter Wynne, crew leaderat the Volunteer Wildfire Ser-vices, said their firefightersare dedicated volunteers whogive their time to safeguardthe sensitive biodiversity ofthe Western Cape.

There is no standard an-swer to the question whythey’ve joined the VolunteerWildfire Services, he said.

“It’s about passion, disci-pline, training, being with li-ke-minded people, evenabout the adrenaline rush.”

Broadly speaking, uncon-trolled fires are structural fi-res and fires in nature, he ex-

plained. Whereas municipal fire servicesmostly attend to structural fires in buil-dings, Volunteer Wildfire Services’ role isthat of wildfire suppression.

They operate from their Newlands, Jon-kershoek and South Peninsula stations.

“Only with training, discipline and team-work can we take on the challenges thatwildfires bring,” says Peter.

“Our training includes, amongst others, wildfire suppression, firefighting equip-ment, map work, radios, 4x4 driving skills, rope work and first aid.”

“There are no heroes on the fire line. We’re only doing what we believe in. Andwe do it as a team.”

Volunteer Wildfire Services is currentlyrecruiting for active firefighters and mem-bers who provide support services.

Cape Town musician Nevil-le D has teamed up withtwo other South African

artists to sing out against xeno-phobia.Gospel singers Judith Sephu-

ma and Patrick Duncanwere inCape Town last week to recordPray, which was released onWednesday 22 April.Neville originally wrote the

song for Judith, who recorded itfor her gospel albumThe experi-ence, but now the song featuresthree voices.Neville says the song was ve-

ry appropriate to the current si-tuation in South Africa with re-gards xenophobic attacks.“It’s just really a prayer,” he

says. He adds that of course the-re’s more to fixing the situationthan praying, but the three be-lieve it’s a good place to start.

The reason Neville asked Pa-trick and Judith to record thissingle is because the three ofthem, have travelled extensive-ly to perform all over Africa.“As soon as it started,we real-

ly felt it,” he says, again refer-ring to the xenophobic attacksthat have been making headli-nes recently. With many friends from

other African countries, xeno-phobia is an issue that hits closeto home, for all three singers, but it would be something theyfelt strongly about even if theydidn’t have friends from northof the border.“Just based on the fact that

they are humanbeings, our bro-thers, we should be doing so-mething.”Patrick, Judith and Neville

recorded the single and the mu-sic video with the help of An-drew and Jeremy Viljoen fromDigital Forest Studios, TimLengfeld from TL Mastering,WOW TV, who did the video re-

cordings and sponsors EuclidJacobs and Mark Jackson.“Everybody came on board,

free of charge, just saying: ‘Wewant to be a part of this’.”Pray was released as a music

video on socialmedia platformsand is currently being sampledon local radio stations. Nevillesays there has been a lot of inte-rest from television stations tobroadcast the music video andwhile he can’t confirmwho willpick it up, DStv’s Faith Broad-cast Network already aired thesong on Sunday 26 April.Neville says they decided to

record the single because they“just wanted to do something”.They want to encourage otherartists from all over the worldto add their voice to something.“There’s a lot of negativity all

over the world as far as SouthAfrica is concerned and we feltlikewewanted to see another si-de of South Africa.”He says he doesn’t want the

world to look at our country andsay: “Theykilled ourpeople andnobody said anything.”Pray is available for downlo-

ad from digital stores like iTu-nes and Amazon.V Visit Neville’s Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/MR.NEVILLE.D orTwitter profile at @NevilleDMusic tohear the song.

Local musicians are converging on theBarnyard Theatre Willowbridge onMonday night in aid of the Hanno Fou-

rie Trust.Hugo Nieuwoudt, Lukas de Beer, Julanie

J and Lindi Grobler and Jandre Spangen-berg will be sharing the stage with a fullband and MC Dowwe Dolla to help raisefunds for little Hanno Fourie.Hanno, from Durbanville, was just six

months old when he was diagnosed withspinal muscular atrophy, a genetic conditi-on that affects the control of muscle move-ment.The disease isn’t covered by his parents’

medical aid, which is why they started thetrust to help pay for his medical costs.Lindi, who has been supporting the Han-

no Fourie Trust’s benefit concerts for threeyears now, usually performs as the con-cert’s opening act, but because she’ll belaunching her new single at the varietyshow, she decided to take things up a notchand will be on stage with the backing of aneight-piece band.

Easy listeningThe single is part of an EP, or series of

five singles, she’s currently working onwithMelkbosstrand producer Jandre Span-genberg of Small Room Studios.Jandré describes Let it in as “pop/ rock

with a heavy country influence”.“It’s easy listening,” he says, adding: “It’s

not meant to be the most gimmicky musicout there. It’s drums, guitars, bass, andkeys... a real Nashville style production.”The song has beenmixed by JustinMaree

and mastered by Rogan Kelsey.Themusic that Lindi has previously rele-

ased has all been “very Afrikaans”, but shesays she wanted to start singing countrymusic, which she loves. Although she isplanning on recording two Afrikaanstracks, she says: “You can’t sing Afrikaanscountry”.HerAfrikaans songswill have thesame flavour, but she believes English ly-rics are simply better suited to the genre.Lindi saysLet it in is a great song to dance

to but she wanted to move away from crea-ting a song that’s “just for dancing”. Shewanted to release something that peoplewill listen to for longer than the general“six-month lifespan” of most dance songs.

Although the song will be debuted onMonday, it will only be officially releasedin about two or three weeks time when itwill be available on www.smallroom.co.za.The twowill be performing the single, Let

it in and other songs together, but they willalso be taking turns to perform on theirown. “We’ll be giving the crowd a lot morediversity that way,” Jandre explains. The band behind them will include Adri-

an Mellema on drums and backing vocals,JustinMaree onbass, TonyDrake onkeybo-ards and Hammond, Nicolette Maree onkeyboards and backing vocals, Luke Clay-ton and JP le Roux on guitars and JacquesJ Brits and Yolandé Strauss on backing vo-cals.Besides singing, Jandré will also be play-

ing keyboards, piano, harmonica and gui-tars.

Joyous occasionLindi believes the Hanno Fourie Trust’s

benefit concerts are among themost succes-sful, partly because there isn’t any kind ofsombre atmosphere around the show.“We’re raising funds for an emotional andsensitive cause, but we’re doing it in a joy-ous way,” she explains.TheHanno FourieVariety Showwill take

place at Barnyard,Willowbridge at 18:30 for19:00 on Monday 4 May. Tickets cost R150and can be booked by calling Leon Grobleron 084 610 1739.V Visit www.lindigrobler.co.za for more on Lindi andher music. Visit www.hannofourie.org for more onHanno and his illness.

After crushing the University of Limpopo 40-27in the semi-final, UWC strolled to a big win overTuks in the final.

Tuks rallied to stay in contention, but UWC’s ex-perience soon became apparent as they cruised toa 23-14 lead at half-time. After the break, the hoststook full control and raced to a commandingpositi-on of 35-20 with just five minutes remaining.

– (Sarel Burger)

– (Sarel Burger)

RACING: LOCALS RETAIN THEIR WINNING STREAK

Cape karters ruleGrey and misty autumn weather

greeted the cream of South Africa’skarting community for the second

round of the SA National Karting Cham-pionship on Saturday. But as conditionsimproved through the day, so did the heaton the track with brilliant racing acrossthe board.

It was a historic day for karting as itwas the first kart race ever to be live stre-amed on the Internet.

The event once again proved Cape kar-ters are enjoying a purple patch, with lo-cal drivers taking 16 wins from 24 racesand overall honours in four of the eightclasses.

Cape drivers all but dominated the Ro-tax Max Challenge classes, with local ladDino Stermin (Designer Trims RKT Kos-mic) overcoming hometown rival DelanoFowler (Suprocom Tony Kart) two racesto one in 125cc high school age JuniorMax. Stermin passed Fowler twice in dra-matic on-track moves to take his maidennational victory.

Cape rulesJoshua Dias (Top Glass/Selepe Birel),

Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic and Giorda-no Lupini (AutoWeek CRG) shared thethird places, with Dias, Coetzee. DelonThompson (A&I Birel) and SebastianBoyd (Boyd Freight Kosmic) rounding offthe overall top six.

Another Cape driver, Jonathan Aberd-ein (TonyKart), took two open Max Chal-lenge 125cc wins to one over Durban ladRichard Upton (CRG), with Dale Fourie

(CRG) third from Ivana Ce-tinich (REB Alpha Birel),Robert Whiting (Rho TechTony) and Chadley Swartz(SAKRA Kosmic). Aberd-ein, Upton and Whiting sha-red the second and thirdplaces in the races with Tyl-an Swartbooi (CRG) snea-king a second head thirdplace.

Jozi’s Bradley Lieben-berg (Smart Call Birel) bro-ke the Cape Max dominati-on by beating local lad Jo-nathan Aberdein (TonyKart) two races to one in thequickest Rotax Max DD2 ge-arbox class with MitchellLicen (Cupboard Value In-trepid), Luca Canderle (In-trepid), Mitchell Licen(Cupboard Value Intrepid)and Kashen Naicker (RKTKosmic) splitting third places betweenthem as Licen, Brittz and Canderle filledout the top six. Durban’s four-time worldkarting champion Cristiano Morgado(Tony Kart) took over-30s DD2 Mastersfrom CRG men Nicholas Verheul and Ro-naldo Baptista.

The driver with the most wins on theday was Capetonian Aidan Strydom whotook five primary school wins out of sixaboard his two TurboTech TopKarts, in-cluding a clean sweep in the Maxterino60 war. Jo’burg laaitie Cameron O’Con-ner (TopKart) Charl Visser (Battery

Energy RKT Zanardi), JP Hamman (Gat-skop RKT Kosmic) and Kwanda Mokoena(Spin Drift TopKart) shared third placesto come home third, fourth and fifth over-all ahead of Troy Dolinschek (MakitaTopKart)

Trio of thirdsThe other primary school class saw

Blaine Rademeyer (Specialised SecurityTopKart) take overall honours with threesecond places after race two and threewinner Aidan Strydom (Turbo Tech Top-Kart) was taken out on the first lap of the

opening heat, and race 1 winner and ano-ther Cape driver, JP Hamman (GatskopRKT Kosmic), ended off the podium in thefollowing races. That left Hamman se-cond overall from. Altan Bouw who tooka trio of thirds aboard his BAT SuppliesRKT Kosmic, Strydom, Jarrod Waberski(DAW TopKart) and Jayden Els (ForceFuel TopKart).

Yet another Cape Town driver, JasonCoetzee defeated his Bloemfontein RKTKosmic teammate two races to one in atrio of hard fought high school Vortex Ju-nior Rok 125cc heats.

South African Richard Murray (Durbanville)put his heart into getting a podium finish at Sun-day’s Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town.

But Murray finished fourth in the end after be-ing passed by Vincent Luis in the final kilometerof the 10km run. Olympic champion AlistairBrownlee won in his first race after returningfrom injury and Spain’s Javier Gomez, the cur-rent world champion, finished second. It wasFrenchman Vincent Luis who passed Murray inthe final stretch. It was a bittersweet finish forMurray as fourth place was one place betterthan last year, but the athlete from Durbanvilledesperately wanted to finish on the podium infront of a 1 000-strong home crowd at the GreenPoint Athletics Stadium.

“It was a spectacular race. I’m a bit upset thatI couldn’t manage a place on the podium, but itis one place better than last year and I gave itmy all. I was on the rivet during the running legand I just couldn’t follow when Javier and Ali-stair went for it near the end. I tried to keep mythird place. I still want to finish on the podiumin front of my home crowd so badly,” said Mur-ray.

“I am grateful for everybody who came out tosupport us today. I had kids running alongsideme on the route screaming my name and thatwas very special. Big up to Javier, Alistair andVincent for getting the podium places today. I‘mvery happy to see all the people coming out tosupport us. The sport is growing and that is im-portant.”
