Speaking during the quarterly Public Safety Information Forum (PSIF) meeting held at Koeberg, Waleed Adams, an official from the City of Cape Town’s human settle- ments department, provided an overview of the project . But his presentation got off to a bumpy start when Adams admitted to not reading the Koeberg evacuation model. He believed that as the occu- pants of the new development were already living within the 16km zone, the development would not increase the population within the zone. Evaluation “Just like any other formal devel- opment, this site went through an environmental authorisation and during evaluation the site was as- sessed and the impact on the evacu- ation zone assessed.” Forum members raised several questions about the number of peo- ple and how the City would ensure more people did not move into the area. Adams said due to the existence of two informal settlements near the Vissershok dump site, the project was necessary to create a place for the occupants to live. “If we don’t move the people, the City would lose its licence and the dump site will have to close. There are approximately 300 families liv- ing on the dump site.” Population In addition, he said next to the de- velopment, there is an informal set- tlement situated near Wolwerivier and the City plans to place these families in the development. This, Adams, explained, meant the City could close the informal settlement and bring the total amount of fami- lies who will occupy Wolwerivier to just over 400. Adams said the planning rights only allowed for 500 units and the City planned to leave land for pub- lic open spaces and other facilities. Questions were also raised about increased population in Dunoon and a member raised concerns about information found on the City’s website indicating Wolwe- rivier could be the solution. According to Adams, Dunoon is over-populated and the City is struggles to control the influx of people. “The only way to deal with Dunoon is to have alternative ac- commodation which we do not have and therefore there is a mas- sive planning operation looking at various possibilities to solve the problem. “At the moment, there is no immediate planto move any more people to Wolwerivier aswe do not have the infrastructure capacity,”said Adams.

Another resident questioned how occu-pants will be evacuated in the case of anemergency at Koeberg. In response, officialsfrom the City’s Disaster Risk Managementdepartment explained the evacuation planwas a model which had been changed to in-clude Wolwerivier.

Responding to questions about the possi-

bility of backyard dwellers, Adams said theplots were too small to accommodate addi-tional structures.

Ward councillor Nora Grose also ad-dressed the meeting and explained that fol-lowing several questions and meetings, theplanning took a “different turn” threemonths ago.

She said because this was an IncrementalDevelopment Area (IDA), the housing of in-formal settlement residents was deemed anemergency.

“It’s not like an informal settlement. It’sjust a structure to move them from a sitewhere they are not allowed to stay becauseof health risks. We have engaged in trainingand participation with the four groups. Theoriginal Wolwerivier estate includes a verysmall group. Then there is Rooidakkies,Takkegat, Spoorkamp and Skandaalkamp,”said Grose.

She said the City has met with communityleaders andall occupantshadbeen recorded. She said there would only be 465 houses,

with a maximum of four occupants.“Only those who were documented will be

moving over, we have had meetings and ses-sions to help them with the integration. They are also being assisted with how tolook after their land and houses. There willnot be a clinic on the site, instead there willbe a mobile clinic.”

Grose also said a piece of landhas been leftvacant and has been earmarked for two Ear-ly Childhood Development (ECD) centres, asports field and other facilities.

The utilisation of traffic department ve-hicles in ward 4 has come under scrutinyfollowing a motion by the ward commit-tee.

The motion tabled at the monthly Blaa-uwberg subcouncil meeting, raises vari-ous concerns about how City of CapeTown officers use traffic vehicles.

Written by Cedric Segal, the motioncalls on the City to find different ways tooptimise the utilisation of resources afterhours.

In the introduction, Segal explains thepublic is often told the department doesnot have enough resources.

He claims theCity doeshave enough re-sources but they are not “gainfully util-ised”.

Segal raises three main issues. Firstly,he says, he has noted that after 17:00 themajority of these vehicles are parked inprivate driveways across the city, “leav-ing skeleton staff to patrol our roads dur-ing the evening peak and at night”.

Other issues raised includevehicles be-ing stationary at the homes of officerswho are off sick or attending court.

In addition, Segal highlightsmany carsare stationarywhenofficers are doing ad-ministration work.

Ward councillor Joy McCarthy saidshe believed Segal “had a point” and themotion would be sent to the City’s execu-tive director for Safety and Security,

Richard Bosman, for a response.According to Bosman, officers are as-

signed a vehicle for which they take re-sponsibility and use it to get to and fromwork.

This, he says, is because officers workshifts and are placed on stand-by duty.

“Where an officer is on leave, the vehi-cles are taken in and used by other staff. If the officer is on sick leave for any peri-od longer than two days, the vehicle is re-turned for other officers to use,” Bosmansaid.

In his motion, Segal suggests all offi-cers be required to travel to work in theirownvehicles andnovehicles be takenoutof service.

For court appearances, he suggests offi-cers be dropped off and collected and ad-min be done at or around shift changetimes.

In addition, he notes that officers con-ducting driver or vehicle testing do notrequire state vehicles.

Asked whether the City was able to im-plement these, Bosman says: “The firstthree are not practical and cannot be im-plemented. The testing officers do not getvehicles except where we use staff to doenforcement and testing as part of theirduties. Over the last few years we havebeen employing testing officers as astand-alone post which does not requirethat they get vehicles”.V Do you think traffic services vehicles are utilisedoptimally? N7 footbridge proposedA group of boys play soccer on an open space situated between two lanes along the N7 behind Dunoon. Concerns over pedestrian safety havebeen raised as pedestrians run across the highway. PHOTO: MONIQUE DUVAL

MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval

Afootbridge between Dunoon and Rich-wood could curb pedestrian fatalitiesalong the N7.

This is one of many proposals the provin-cial transport department is considering, following a public meeting on the issue.According to a recent statement by the de-

partment, the portion of the N7 behind Du-noon has been declared a hot spot for pedes-trian fatalities. Low visibility due to mist, coupled with bad lighting, wet roads andspeedingmotorists are a recipe for disaster. However, along this stretch of the N7

there is an added risk as pedestrians runacross the busy highway as theymake theirway to work in the morning. Each morningbakkies and trucks can be seen parked inthe emergency lane as men run across theroad to get to the vehicles.

Soccer crossingIn the afternoon, youngboys are seen run-

ning across the N7 as they make their wayto an open field situated between the twolanes to play soccer. In a letter to TygerBurger, motorist Fran-

cois Geldenhuys, who travels along the N7regularly, raised his concerns about pedes-trian safety after seeing a body covered ina silver blanket on Tuesday 23 June.“The body was lying in the left lane of the

N7 right opposite Dunoon, travelling to-wards Cape Town. Paramedics and policewere already on the scene and had blockedoff the left lane. The body was completelycovered with a silver blanket, blood wasstreaming from under the blanket. Notsomething anyone should ever have to see,”he writes.Geldenhuys said in October last year he

nearly became a statistic when a pedestrian

ran across the road into the back of his mo-torbike causing it to swerve violently fromside to side. After two nearmisses along theN7, Geld-

enhuys has questioned when a pedestrianfootbridgewill be constructed to reduce pe-destrian fatalities.“How much blood must be spilt before

our government will erect a pedestrianbridge over the N7?” he asks.

High death rateAccording to the transport department,

between June and August last year 164 pe-destrians died after being hit by vehicleson Western Cape roads.Department spokesperson Siphesihle

Dube said of the 164 fatalities, three oc-curred along the N7 near Dunoon. This in-cluded an incident involving a nine-year-old boy in July. In August, two men aged32 and 64 also died along this stretch ofroad.Dube explains the road has been identi-

fied as a hot spot for accidents involving pe-destrians due to the high volume of pedes-trians crossing it daily.“Pedestrians cross the road to go towork.

They see it as the shortest route to their re-spectivedestinations. There is also apreva-lence of people being picked up on the sideof theN7 bymotorists, whether they be em-ployers or otherwise.“Additionally, most of these pedestrians

are not wearing reflective clothing for mo-torist to be able to see them. This is an evenbigger issue over the winter months whendays are shorter and night time longer,” hesays.

ClampdownDube says the department will be clamp-

ing down on vehicles parked in the emer-gency lanes. He said during a recent public

meetingwithRichwood residents, anumberof interventions were proposed.“This includes the construction of a foot

bridge along the N7 as a possible long termintervention. There is an underpass at apoint along that road. Other short term in-terventions have included education andawareness activities, particularly at theschools, warning children about issues sur-rounding pedestrian safety.”

V Are you concerned about pedestrian safety alongthe N7? What do you think the solution is? Sendus a letter with your thoughts to briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

MyCiTi commuters will now getmorevalue for their money following aplan by the City of Cape Town to re-

duce the peak-hour period.According to a statement, the morning

and afternoon peak-hour period for theMy-CiTi bus service will be shortened by 45minutes each as from today (Wednesday 1July).

With this change, more commuters standto benefit from the lower off-peak or saverfares if they avoid travelling in the newshortened peak-hour period.

Over the past few months, Transport forCape Town (TCT), the City’s transport au-thority, has developed products such as thenew R530 monthly package and a R30 Mov-er package to make the MyCiTi servicemore affordable to commuters.

“Pivotal to these developments is the de-cision to shorten the morning and after-noon peak-hour period. Commuters whotravel outside the new peak-hour periodswill see significant savings, in particular ifthey loadMover points on their myconnectcards,” says mayoral committee memberfor transport Brett Herron.

SavingsAccording to the statement, depending

on the distance travelled, commuters whomake use ofMover points can save between20% and 33% on their fare when they travelearlier or later.

“We hope that this incentive will encour-age commuters to avoid the busiest timesof the day and to start their journeys beforeor after the peak periods where possible, sothat they can benefit from the change. Im-portantly, if you tap in just before the peak-hour period begins, you will pay the saverfare even if you finish your journey withinthe peak period,” Herron says.

Peak-hour periods onweekdayswill be asfollows:

. In the morning from 06:45 to 08:00 asopposed to 06:30 to 08:30; and

. In the afternoon from 16:15 to 17:30 asopposed to 16:00 to 18:00;

There are also new products, these in-clude:

. A new R30 Mover package (currentlythe cheapest Mover package is R50);

. A R530 monthly system-wide package(excluding Cape Town International Air-port) – this new package will benefit thosewho are travelling longer distances onweekdays, such as from Mitchell’s Plain,Khayelitsha and Atlantis to the Civic Cen-tre or Hout Bay. This package covers thecommuter’s first two journeys for the day,inclusive of the transfers. It is valid for 30days from the day that it is loaded on themyconnect card;

. A R780 monthly system-wide packagethat includes journeys to the Cape Town In-ternational Airport, with the same condi-tions as the cheaper monthly package men-tioned above;

. Amyconnect card will cost R30 insteadof R35.

Penalty reducedTo help users to get used to the MyCiTi

service, a lower penalty fare of R10 will bededucted for the first three instances onnew cards. Thereafter, the penalty farecharged will be the usual R22 (or R83 at theairport).

Commuters should please note that ifthey are usingMover points to travel on theMyCiTi buses, they can load only one addi-tional package (for example: one of eitherthe monthly premium or non-monthly pre-mium packages) on their myconnect cards. The Mover points are valid for three yearsand the three year expiry date is being re-calculated each time that a Mover packageis loaded. A commuter therefore can onlyload a second additional package on theirmyconnect card once the existing packageon their myconnect card has expired (usu-ally within 31 days, depending on the pack-age).

The Blaauwberg subcouncil is to startgathering information on community-based organisations for their proposal

for a community court in Table View.Theproposal dates back to 2013when sub-

council chairperson Heather Brenner sub-mitted a motion expressing the need for acommunity court within the subcouncil. At the time, she expressed the frustration

of residents, ratepayers, Community PoliceForums (CPFs), police, Law Enforcementand others over the number of offences leftunpunished due to a lack of easily accessi-ble court processes. This, she said, had resulted in an appeal

for a community court in the southern partof the Blaauwberg Subcouncil, which in-cludes wards 23, 4 and 107.

Bylaw contraventionsSpeaking during the monthly subcouncil

meeting, manager Peter Deacon gave feed-back on his meeting with senior publicprosecutor Fiona Cloete and other officialsheld in June.In his report, Deacon stated that several

questions about community courts were ta-bled and he was informed contraventionsof municipal by-laws and petty offencessuch as shop lifting, malicious damage toproperty, sex workers and unruly behav-iour, among others, could be heard at thiscourt. He further explained the punishment is

dependent on the seriousness of the offence.“In most cases it would be upliftment,

counselling, skills training or communityservices. Service providers need to be iden-tified to establishwhether they have the re-sources or capacity to ensure that the pun-ishment is attended to or executed.“The service provider will have to moni-

Just over 68 000 units of drugs with astreet value totalling nearly R2.4 milli-on have been confiscated by the Metro

PoliceGangandDrugTaskTeamsinceJuly2013During the same period, 3 846 suspects

were arrested for drug-related offences, thebulk being in Manenberg, Hanover Park,Kraaifontein, Elsies River and Steenberg.Making the announcement last week, Ci-

ty mayco member for safety and security,JP Smith, said these statistics do not inclu-de the successes by the City’s other enforce-ment agencies, but theMetroPoliceDepart-ment accounts for the bulk of its enforce-ment.

Familiar faces“The figures for the current financial ye-

ar are slightly lower than the previous yearbecause we have been side-tracked by landinvasions and protests. However, this isstill nothing to sneeze at when one consi-ders that we have but a fraction of the re-sources compared with to our South Afri-can Police Service counterparts,” saidSmith.“We have also started employing a more

intelligence-driven approach with the helpof community members and it is paying di-vidends. Ultimately, however, we need tosee an improvement in the criminal justicebecause far too often we find we’re arres-ting familiar faces.”TheCity ofCapeTowncontinues to incre-

ase its focus on drug abuse with a strategythat cuts across a number of directorates inorder to clamp down on the drug trade, butis also increasing access to treatment andrunning a number of preventative cam-paigns.The United Nations established Interna-

tional Day against Drug Abuse and IllicitTrafficking to remind member states of

their commitment to creating an internati-onal society free from drug abuse.TheCityofCapeTownhasestablished six

substance abuse treatment sites since 2008.Between July 2011 and June 2014, 4 311 pe-

ople sought help at the City Health substan-ce abuse treatment sites in Tafelsig, Khaye-litsha, Delft South, Milnerton and Park-wood.The gender breakdown mirrored that of

theMedicalResearchCouncil, witha 76ma-le / 24 female split. The most common sub-stances clients had been usingwere crystalmethamphetamine (tik), dagga, alcohol andheroin.“Our treatment sites accommodated the

highest number of clients of any serviceprovider in the province between July andDecember last year and this proves a num-ber of things,” said City mayco member forhealth, Siyabulela Mamkeli.“Firstly, it underscores the great need for

treatment, but also speaks to the quality ofservices that clients have access to whenthey enrol in our programme,” said Mam-keli.

Early interventionAdditionally, the City’s Social Develop-

ment and Early Childhood Directorate hasbeen driving preventative initiativesthrough its Substance Abuse Programme, including the Strengthening Families Pro-ject, Soft Skills prevention programme inschools and the “Be Smart, Don’t Start” the-atre campaign. This financial year, the projects reached

an audience of more than 23 000, most ofthem young school children.“Childrenare exposed to substanceabuse

so we have had to develop and implementprogrammes that speak directly to them. This is why the bulk of our interventionsare done at primary school level,” he said.

Massive drug haulthanks to task team

Last week the United Nations called for 26June to be International Day against DrugAbuse and Illicit Trafficking to express itscommitment toward a world society free ofsubstance dependency. In South Africa the National Develop-

ment Plan is the blueprint for preventingand reducing alcohol and substance de-pendency.Research indicates the social costs of sub-

stance related trauma and accidents inSouthAfrica far exceed those of other coun-tries and intoxication is a major factor inroad accidents.According to SACENDU, South Africa

has the highest percentage of FAS (or Foe-tal Alcohol Syndrome) worldwide and alco-hol dependency has increased.Social services organisation Badisa pro-

vides services to individuals who are sub-stance dependent.

Their approach is governed by their com-mitment to serve and theymanage two pro-grammes.The Ramot Treatment Centre forsubstance dependency inParowEast catersfor about 400 patients a year.Only 100 of their 400-bed capacity are

funded by the department of social develop-ment, meaning the balance of patients haveto be privately funded. Social worker Enyavan Zyl said fresh food remains one of theirbiggest challenges, since the patients showan increased appetite once they have com-pleted their physical detoxification. Peoplewho are substance dependent do not existin isolation and their families, children, friends and colleagues are all impacted.V To make a difference and become involved visitwww.badisa.org.za or contact Annemarie Bezuidenhout at [email protected]. Badisa is anonprofit public benefit organisation and all donations will receive a tax rebate certificate.

. T03 Atlantis, Table View, Omuramba

. Route 237 (Robinvale) with nine stopsalong the route to the MyCiTi station inReygersdal Drive“With the roll-out of the abovementioned

routes, the total number of feeders inAtlan-tis amounts to seven, connecting evenmoreresidents to schools, clinics, the centralbusiness district (CBD) and industrial are-as; while the trunk routes provide safe, af-fordable, reliable and decent public trans-port to work and other opportunities out-side Atlantis,” Herron says.According to the statement with this fi-

nal roll-out, the Sibanye buses which oper-ate from Atlantis to Cape Town (along theR27 in particular) will stop operating asfrom Saturday 4 July.Passengers using this service will have

“Anger over squatters”,TygerBurger, 24 June refers. Iwas at the public meeting lastweek Monday and it wasawesome to see the communitystand together. However, I left the meeting

feeling very frustrated and I donot believe that we as acommunity should feel at easeafter witnessing that paneldodging question left right andcentre. My first concern was this:

Why hold a public meeting ifyou are not going to allow thecommunity to really take partand to ask questions? Only ahandful of questions wereallowed to be asked and mostof the questions were notanswered. Don’t get me wrong, the panel did respond to eachquestion, but with a politicalspeech tactic where they say alot while not actually addres-sing the question asked. As far as I was informed, the

meeting was scheduled for7-9pm. Why did the panel cutthe meeting short by at least ahour when there were so manypeople, myself included, withtheir hands up trying to askimportant questions. The panel made triumphant

opening speeches where theywere reassuring the communi-ty that the Western Capegovernment/City of Cape Townwere not planning to build lowcost housing on erf 1117. Sosome people felt assured andleft, BUT! What the WesternCape government/City of CapeTown plans to do with the landis completely irrelevant in thiscase as they do not own theland and therefore are not incontrol of the land. The important question is

this: Is the Department ofPublic Works planning to buildlow cost housing on erf 1117?The panel did not need toanswer that question, becauseit was never asked in that way.The panel used diversiontactics to steer away from the

Greatestdanger lurksin the homeOne in every two women killed aremurdered by their partner.Research by the Medical Research

Council, mapping trends over a decade, shows murder by a relative or loved one, often referred to as intimate femalehomicide, has become the leading causeof women being killed. Researchers foundlittle had been recorded in police docketson prior abuse history. This is alarming,as murder is seldom the first act ofviolence against an intimate partner.Perhaps if a history of abuse had beenrecorded, the murder could have beenprevented.Children don’t fare much better. More

than two children are murdered in SouthAfrica every day, according to the 2011/12crime statistics. Our rate of child homici-de is more than double the global avera-ge, according to the World Health Organi-sation. Over a third of these murderstake place in the child’s home and morethan a third of children are killed bysomeone they know. There was also ahigh rate of sexual assault in these cases. In fact, over 50 children are raped daily

in our country, according to the 2013/14crime statistics. And these are just thereported cases. These statistics should scare you. They

should leave you feeling disturbed. Theyshould spur you to action, either to leavea dangerous situation or help those whofind themselves in one.Hiding behind your curtains is no

longer an option. Preventing theseatrocities is everyone’s concern.

- Anoniem

V What are they building on both sides ofOkavango Road at the Brighton and Lan-geberg intersection? - Anonymous

V Erf 1117 (TB Table View): Ek kom vanKemptonpark.

-Martiens Bek

V The group walking their dogs on the Bo-thasig field have been doing so for years, and all of these dogs (and their owners)are well adjusted and socialised. You arewelcome to join us. If your dogs are notsocialised, please wave your arms in theair and we’ll know to steer clear. - Willow

questions asked. When thespeaker was confronted aboutthe claims of fraudulent docu-ments spreading rumours, hewould not look into the docu-ments that a communitymember brought, proving thatthe document was actually fromthe City’s own website. Heseemed to be in a corner, butthen very quickly, and nervous-ly I might add, diverted themeeting and did not address thequestion. The Department of Public

Works can’t build anything onerf 1117 without the City ofCape Town’s approval, but thatis not the point. We as the community wanted

to know if low cost housing wasbeing planed for erf 1117 fromwhatever department or govern-ment.We don’t know what will

happen with the negotiations tobuy the land and there is notrust in national government, seeing how they disregard thePublic Protectors findings andeven court rulings on occasionsanyway. So until the Western Cape

government/City of Cape Townowns erf 1117, what the Depart-ment of Public Works plans tobuild on erf 1117 remains themost important issue at hand.

Anonline auctionof old socks sawresi-dents from Milnerton to Melkboss-trand pledge their support for a wor-

thy cause. A tongue-in-cheek post on TableView Auctions by resident Michael deKock tickled the funny bones of many andgarnered so much support he was able todonate just overR2 700 to the SouthAfricanGuide Dog association. The page, which has just over 2600 mem-

bers, has been operating for just over threemonths and sees scores of residents auc-tion unwanted items each week. Page ad-min Shevaughn Mulder says each Sundayfrom 17:00 until Monday 21:00, membersare allowed to post clothing, jewellery, shoes and other items for bids. But last week DeKock, in amove against

clothing auctions, which he says he“hates”, decided to auction off a pair of“holey socks”.In his post, De Kock said his socks were

imported fromChina and bought in Runduand bidding would be at increments of tencents. “Once the bid has gone over R50, Iwill donate R500 to the Blind Dog Associa-tion. Once over R250 I will add a bottle ofJack to the socks,” he wrote.Mulder says bidders quickly started

making offers and theauction spiralledoutof control, with bidders opting to donatethe amount they bid.On Monday 22 June De Kock used a

planned public meeting about Happy Val-ley informal settlement as an opportunityto gather the donations .The winning bidder was Lisa Whiteley

Meiring. She received the socks while DeKock transferred R2 742.88 to the associa-tion.“I think this Facebook page is the best,”

he said.

This pair of sock caused a stir on socialmedia last week and saw residents fromMilnerton to Melkbosstrand make donationsto the South African Guide Dog Association.

Double comedy on the billThe Milnerton Players will host theirsecond social evening at the MilnertonPlayhouse on Friday 3 July. Two comedy items are on the menu. The first is the one act play Fourteen

The piece will bedirected by Sheila McCormick and thecast is made up of Veronica Suckling,Warren Frost and Taylor Storm,.The second course is the short sketch,

The Kill, which is not nearly as dastard-ly as its title suggests. It features DavidWolfaardt and David Jordaan withBrigitte Scherz making her début in thedirector’s chair.

V The evening starts at 19:30 for 20:00 andtickets cost R10 or R5 for members. Nobooking is required. Call 082 267 1061 for moreinformation.

The bumper 4th of July IndependenceDay meeting at Killarney on Saturdayis a unique American themed package.

It combines the razzmatazz of Yankeetanks, FordMustangs, chromedHarleys, theStar Spangled Banner and Billy Joel’s,“she’s like a rocket on the fourth of July”,all combined in the fifth round of the PowerSeries sponsored by Wingfield Motors. As far as racing goes, the All American

one-make V8 Masters category, with carsunashamedly based on the Ford Mustang ofold being redesigned for the track and builtby Owen Ashley in his factory/workshop atKillarney, will take pride ofplace.Powered by modified V8 en-

gines producing 325kW of po-wer through the rear wheelsand driven by superstars likemultiple former South AfricanSuperkart champion MarcelAngel, sometime Supercar tit-leholder Richard Schreuder,Craig Jarvis, Fabio Tafani andFranco Donadio, the racing isalmost always close and dange-rous.With reigning Formula Su-

percar champion Nick Adcockpossibly absent, the door inthis category could open for yo-ung Dayne Angel, who hasbeen in fine form. Others towatch include Brad Wadeley,Andrew Moffitt and GarethEasom. But the biggest entry and so-

me of the best racing can be ex-pected in the Midas Clubman

events from front runners like spectacularDanie vanNiekerk in hisWingfield Beemer,NieyaazModack (BMW), Jesse Huggett (VWJetta) and Andre Johnson (Audi Quattro). The rookie to watch is going to be 15-year-

old Joshua Dolinschek in the Formula Libresingle seater class. Still too young to (legally)drive on public roads, Joshua was impressi-ve as he dominated the first two rounds inwhich he competed earlier this season. Ho-wever, he was well beaten by Julian van derWatt in a more powerful car at the most re-cent meeting. It will be interesting to seehow he fares during the meeting on Satur-day.At the other end of the scale, the popular

54-year-old Danie (van Killarney) Maritz isa veteran motorcyclist astride the sameGSX-R750 Suzuki that carried him to victoryin the 1987Western Province championship.Incredibly though, this super-fit rider is lap-ping even faster now than he did more than28 years ago.Aimed at the whole family, the day is also

going to include a Breakfast Run for streetlegal motorcycles, a kiddies playgroundmanned by minders and an American stylehot-dog eating contest in the clubhouse. There are 18 races for cars and motorcy-

cles on the programme, the first of which isdue off after final practice and qualifyingsessions at 10:00.

SAREL BURGER

Unie-Mil is aanvanklik goed in toom

Cathy pedals her way into hall of legendsCathy pedals her way into hall of legendsSTEHAN SCHOEMAN

Being the only female cyclist to be inductedin the Legends of the Pedal hall of fame isnothing short of remarkable. But Cathy Car-stens has had a superb career that beganback in 1984 andat the age of 52 thisBracken-

fell resident is still on her bike, with no in-tention of quitting anytime soon.“Before I started cycling I was aWestern

Province 800m athlete, but a serious kneeinjury forced me to quit and that is how Istarted cycling,” said Cathy. Her list of achievements reads like the

perfect script. In 1985 she set the3000m South African track recordand won over 300 fun rides between1985 and 1990.In 1985 shewon themixed tandem

section of theArgusCycle Tour. Thefollowing year she broke the Argusrecord for women by about 30 min-utes. “I still remember that day, ev-erything was just going very welland I can’t remember the precisetime, but I beat the record by abouthalf an hour. After that dream race,I won it for the next four years.”After winning the national cham-

pionships in 1990, Cathy took a 12-year break in which she raised hertwo children and started her ownphysiotherapy practice in Bracken-fell where she is still working withtop sportsmen and women includ-ing Mariska Strauss, the 2014 Afri-can XCO MTB champion, Peter-John Waterboer (SA schools hur-dler), Alicia Visser (WP tug of war),ZeekeNorris (K1 kickboxer) and Jo-nathan Forlee (national under-20basketball player), to name a few. After her 12-year absence she

made a comeback at the age of 41.Two years later, competing with

the best in the country, she showed her classby being ranked second in South Africa.Further accolades include gold medals at

the South African veteran championshipsfrom 2007 to 2010. She took silver at theWorldCup in Austria in 2005 and 2006 and gold in2009. At the World Veteran UCI Road Champsin Austria she claimed silver in 2005 and 2006

and won gold in 2008.One of her proudestmoments remains her

overallWestern Province Cyclist of the Yearaward back in 2008. “What made this awardso special was the fact the award was formen and women. Being acknowledged thevery best cyclist irrespective of gender wasfantastic.”

Cathy Carstens is the only female cyclist to beincluded in the Legends of the Pedal hall of fame.
