“ Frame is a resting place along a trail of the Grand Bend at the lambton Shores in southern ontario. the pavilion acts as a buffer
from weather, a transition across a lake and a gallery space. The apertures are designed in such a way that frame the surrounding
environment, turning these particular views into works of art in and of themselves, allowing the travellers to reflect upon the amazing
wilderness that surrounds them. the building is a somewhat monolithic mass, hollowed out by light. A slight slope in the floor plate directs
occupants to a vantage point above the water, where a bridge projects to the opposite side. ”

explored in isolation and eventually converged into one cohesive proposal. certain explorations became
flexible options, where others became resolved elements, yet all attempts contributed to the development of

“ A third year studio design project that focused on condominium developments in Toronto, Ontario. The project demanded
explorations from the macro level of urban analysis to the micro level of tectonic expression and everything in between. ”

“ Artery resembles a highway for social
interaction and community development.
The concept embraces the growing faith
that cities influence diversity, tolerance,
entertainment, and innovation through face
to face networking. The building itself is a
place of local interaction between persons
of different income levels and familial
structures. Artery attempts to influence
social activity by taking advantage of
potential communal / cultural spaces and
exploiting them through views and efficient
means of access. in a win-win result, The
exploited proximity to near-by community
centres will generate social activity and
increase the comfort levels of families;
allowing for a smoother transition into an
urban setting. Overall, the internal social
network of Artery is then exploited to a
surrounding, larger system; the occupants
of Artery become super connected. ”

Suggested expansion of public space allows for an increase in local market activity
While maintaining an accessible terrain, the market activity is brought up to a level above
the social gathering space
Each of the five market typologies arise along the path and additional market possibilities are proposed within
the courtyard and along the street
News stand, information kiosk & garbage collection
Built up vegetated wall wraps permanent program at grade creating a unique social

The structure becomes platform for regional aesthetic expression
A structural frame spans along the elevated pathway to support a dense bamboo cladding. Amongst the structural framework, market owners have the possibility of hanging all sorts of fabric to create their own unique aesthetic

“ The design proposal
celebrates the importance of the market
square in Moroccan culture as a catalyst for
building healthy, sustainable communities.
Sloping below grade is
an open space that acts as the social
gathering space for the residents of the
neighborhood during regular hours. Tucked
against the existing wall are the permanent
programs stipulated in the competition
guidelines—a café, the information area,
and the newspaper kiosks— all of which are
wrapped within a trellis of vegetation that
is anticipated to grow into an inviting green
vegetation wall.
The same space transforms
into a bustling market place with a terraced
ramp that loops around and above the social
gathering space to accommodate 28 nesting
grounds for vendors to install their temporary
market stalls, and provide the local
community with a rich variety of produce
and other commercial goods. The design
proposal also aims at taking advantage of
the opportunity to close off the street during
market hours to maximize the market space
for five different market zones.
Blessed with a very mild
climate, we chose to envelope the market
place with a light touch of bamboo sticks
to provide shading from the sun and some
protection from the wind. ”49Ad-dAR AL-BAYdA SOUq / 2012

HELSINKI LIBRARY BOTH FRAMES URBAN SPACE AND ACTIVITY WHILE BEING AN OBJECT IN ITS OWN RIGHT, PARTICIPATING IN THE COLLECTION OF MOST PROMINENT PUBLIC BUILDINGS SURROUNDING THE NEW KANSALAISTORI PLAZA. IT NEEDS TO BE BOTH FOREGROUND AND BACKGROUND AS ICONIC ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN FABRIC. FINDING ITSELF BETWEEN THE HELSINKI ’S CULTURAL CITY CENTRE, AND THE NATURAL EDGE OF THE TOOLONLAHTI PARK AND BAY, THE BUILDING FORM IS INSPIRED BY THE LOCAL RUGGED LANDSCAPE OF WATER, AND IGNEOUS ROCK OF THE FENNOSCANDIAN SHIELD.
LIKE THE ERRATIC GRANITE BOULDERS LEFT BEHIND BY THE GLACIERS, THE BUILDING TEETERS ON THE SMOOTH GRANITE BEACH OF THE ADJACENT PLAZA, ITS BASE IS ERODED TO ALLOW ENTRY FROM ALL FOUR SIDES. A LARGE ATRIUM IS CARVED FROM ITS CENTRE, MARKING THE PRIMARY CENTRAL ENTRANCE, ADDRESSING THE PARLIAMENT BUILDING TO THE WEST. THE ATRIUM OPENS UP THE CENTRE OF THE OBLONG PLAN TO ALLOW FOR NATURAL VENTILATION THROUGH CONVECTION, FREE NIGHT COOLING, AND SUNLIGHT TO ENTER.
BOOK STACKS ON ALL FLOORS ARE GATHERED AROUND THIS ATRIUM, FLANKED BY TWO VERTICAL CIRCULATION AND MECHANICAL CORES SURROUNDED WITH THE SMALLER PROGRAMME ROOMS. THIS PLAN ORGANIZATION FREES UP THE NORTH AND SOUTH ENDS OF THE PLAN—WHERE NATURAL LIGHT IS BEST AND MOST EASILY CONTROLLED, FOR OPEN LOUNGE AND READING SPACES, RESTAURANTS AND CAFES.
THE BUILDING ENVELOPE IS DESIGNED TO CAPTURE NATURAL LIGHT, DIFFUSE IT AND OR DEFLECT INTO THE INTERIOR, AND GENERATE ENERGY. THE BUILDING SKIN IS CONCEIVED OF AS PIXELATED SHEATH WRAPPING ROOF AND WALLS, WITHIN ITS UNDULATING FRAME. THE HIGH PERFORMANCE CURTAIN- WALL SYSTEM UNIFIES A MIXTURE OF THREE TYPES OF PANELS FROM TRANSPARENT IGU’S, TO TRANSLUCENT INSULATED GLASS PANELS, TO SOLID SPANDREL WITH BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS. THE SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR A UNIFIED APPEARANCE WITH SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF LIGHT, TRANSLUCENCY AND ENCLOSURE TO SUIT SPECIFICS OF SOLAR ORIENTATION, LOCAL INTERIOR USE, AND VIEW.
