The 2012 IEEE Panel of Editors meeting took place in San
Francisco, California and I was pleased to be one of the
attendees at this meeting. It was a fruitful meeting where
various matters were discussed and updated; such as moving
towards open access journal, interactive content update, author
network and mobile products development etc. I believe these ini-
tiatives will benefit our publications greatly and provide greater
values to the members of CIS.
In this issue, we feature the applications of Type-2 fuzzy logic systems. Fuzzy
logic surrounds us even if we have not been consciously aware of its presence. My
bowl of rice for dinner is cooked with a fuzzy logic embedded rice cooker that
possesses the intelligence to sense the amount of rice and water necessary to cook
up a perfect pot of rice. The fragrance of the fuzzy cooked rice never fails to make
me hungry!
And while I’m satisfying my hunger pangs, my laundry is in a fuzzy logic
embedded washing machine that senses the amount of clothes in the washing drum
so as to fill up with the appropriate amount of water to ensure the clothes are
thoroughly washed, while reducing water wastage. How convenient! It has certainly
come a long way since Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh introduced the concept of fuzzy
logic in 1973.
We have entered now into the realm of real world applications for Type-2 fuzzy
logic; where the prevalence of human uncertainties is taken into account and Type-2

To bring this new website to you,
many of our society members have
worked very hard to make this happen.
The conversations of developing a new
website for better service for our soci-
ety started about two years ago under
the leadership of Gary Yen and the pre-
vious Webmaster team Jeen-Shing
Wang and Wan-Yu Jhuang. Since then,
many discussions and meetings have
been organized and a collaborative
team was formed to ensure this moves
forward smoothly and efficiently. In this
process, CIS has provided tremendous
support and help for the entire devel-
opment and launching procedure. This
new website could have not been
accomplished without the great leader-
ship and visionary guidance of Marios
Polycarpou (CIS President), Gary Yen
(CIS Past President), and Pablo Estevez
(VP Members Activities). Many of the
detailed development work have been
accomplished with a great collaborative
team including Tom Monaco, Jo-Ellen
Snyder, and John Wettlaufer. Further-
more, during the internal review pro-
cess, the EXCOM and ADCOM have
also provided detailed comments, sug-
gestions, and feedback for us to further
improve the appearance and functions
of the website. Without all the great
coordination and dedicated work from
everyone in the team, this new website
could have not been possible to the
current stage!
Whether you are an existing mem-
ber of CIS, or just a new visitor to our
society, I invite you to explore our
new web home so you can see all the
exciting research and education infor-
mation and activities in our society.
Should you have any suggestions or
comments for our website, please feel
free to contact us at Haibo He (he@

Pablo Estevez ([email protected],
VP Members Activities) and IEEE CIS
staff at [email protected].
We hope you will enjoy our new

Editor’s Remarks (continued from page 2)
fuzzy logic is applied in different
aspects of our everyday life. Besides
household appliances, Type-2 fuzzy
logic has found its way into comput-
ing-dependent industr ies including
banking, finance and energy genera-
tion, as highlighted in this issue’s fea-
ture article “Towards the Wide Spread
Use of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Systems in
Real World Applications.”
As advancements are made in imag-
ing, Type-2 fuzzy logic has made similar
advances and has been employed to
reduce noise while enhancing image
quality. This is explored and analyzed in
another article featured in this issue
“Application of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Fil-
tering to Reduce Noise in Color Imag-
es.” In our pursuit for perfect, logical,
non-emotional decision-making process-
es, especially in a commercial context, we
rely on computers to assist us. Our next
feature article addresses the “Challenges
for Perceptual Computer Applications
and How They Were Overcome,” bring-
ing us another step closer to perfection.
But perhaps before we go further,
we need to consider the confusion
present in Type-2 fuzzy logic for as
much as it handles uncertainties, there
are some “fuzziness” present within the
logic itself, which are addressed in the
Discussion Forum article “Type-2
Fuzzy Logic: Challenges and Miscon-
ceptions.” In addition to the application
notes and book review in this issue, we
are pleased to have the IEEE CIS Stu-
dent Member Activities Subcommittee
giving us an update on what has been
happening on their end, a report on
the salient features of the new IEEE
CIS web site, and an update by the
IEEE CIS Philippines Chapter which
was newly established in 2011.
We have passed more than the half
year mark for 2012 in the blink of an
eye. We hope you have enjoyed the
magazine as much as we have enjoyed
putting it together for you. The success
of this publication depends greatly on
your active participation, submission of
new research findings, sharing of ideas
and valuable feedback. On behalf of the
Editorial Board, I encourage you to
contact me at [email protected] with
any comments and suggestions.
Till our next issue, we wish you a
fruitful last quarter for 2012!
